If someone had told you on your first day that you'd be doing 10 miles by noon in three months...I wonder what you would have said to them. Probably, "you're crazy!" Lol 😊💕 Way to go! You're an inspiration!
So very true. After spending over six months of PCT hiking in 2019 (3 times connecting with 2C btw) my most disappointing days were the higher mile days (I don't recall actual distances and only count for navigation purposes anyway). Those days were disappointing bc I don't know what I missed, but knew I missed something. On slower days there was rarely ever a single mile without something to take notice of, God's creation to marvel at, and/or others to greet and share friendly words with (those good folks not obsessed with their own tourist ego trip). It's not the easy way to carry a heavier kit than most hikers, but the sustainment load I pack gives me more time between resupply, I get real cooked meals, better hydration and what may be ironic to some, I more effectively avoid heat and strain issues which are quite often a direct result of moving too fast (#1) and too many daily miles (close #2). I've encountered few hikers likely to encounter true competition like I have engaged in a times of my life, but that's not what gives a scenic hike its best meaning. My competitiveness is still in me, but it is a detriment, not an asset to my hike, so the extra load tempers it for me every (well almost every) step of the way. Meekness, like that of Master Yoda or Kwai Chang Cain, is the forgotten manskill.
I was having a really bad day trying to get a rounded bolt out of my transmission pan and stopped to take a break have a beer and watch your video. You got me feeling better at the cave monsters! I'm LMAO right now... Thanks! :)
Cory it has been incredible to get to know u even just a little bit and to watch you getting stronger and healthier every day. You have the power!!!! Stay safe and have fun out there.
If 2019 was anything like a typical demographic year, you are likely to encounter quite a few others around your age. It really doesn't matter much, bc a hiker is a hiker is a hiker, but I mention it just to add encouragement. I suspect that the trail sees as many hikers age 65 to 70 as from 55 to 65 because the latter group are less likely to have the freedom, but often think that they still have time to wait (one day), even though such time is guaranteed to no one. The late 60s folks seemed to me to have a sense of now or never, and I saw many of them who were loving it while embracing the pain. Starting to get up there myself, but I hope I don't forget how I emotionally, at least, felt about half my age around the time I walked into Wrightwood, and that wasn't without chronic injuries or any mystical fountain of youth. I don't really know what all went into the formula, but I know that it included lots of sunshine and the letting go of loads of crap that so much makes us old before our time - unnecessarily.
OMG!!!! Santa Clarita/Agua Dulce was my home for 26 years. Moved to Midwest a few years ago. Loved seeing my old stomping grounds, although I bursted out into tears. Lol. Happy trails.
Hey Cory! Hello from Ontario, Canada. My son is doing the trail, he's just reached Hiker Heaven today, so he's still quite a ways behind you. His trail name is Mayor in case you run into him. You've been so inspiring to both of us. Be proud of what you're accomplishing! You're a fantastic role model. Keep on keepin' on!
Hello my hiking friend, you're setting quite a pace. Miracles still happen, Panda's crampon was found and better yet Nirvana gave the cramp to Panda. It's cool that you were able to meet up with Panda before he had to leave for the wedding. Take care and be safe. 🤗
Thinking about you as the turtle that slow and steady that will win the race. others that are the rabbit will find This 2019 PCT is not one you can rush mother nature says power to the turtle!!!!!
Your amazing! It's a joy watching you get faster every week. I don't think I could keep up with you. And a shout out to Panda...Nothing like meeting nice folks, no matter where you are.
Love that you and Panda have come to be great friends on the trail. Love watching both of y’alls hiking videos. Congratulations on the 60 lb weight lose. You’re so awesome to be doing this to better your health and such a cool way to do so. Prayers for safety, health, and to reaching your goals.
So glad you got to connect with Panda again -- seems like a great friend! Made it to Hiker Heaven -- awesome! Thought of you this week as I crossed the Bridge of the Gods in OR/WA -- it'll be a while til you are there, but I loved having my feet on part of the PCT for a moment in time!
When David Attenborough retires I really want Panda to take over for Planet Earth. Him and Mary Mansfield could co-narrate and now wouldn’t that just be utterly delightful!
Wonderful change physically and with your attitude since the beginning of your hike... The trail is good for you, and you are good for the trail! Hike On!
Panda seems like a cool guy. It's interesting how everyone has a different pace, faster, slower, medium speed. Even though Panda is taking 2 weeks off, he may catch up to you again in 3/4 weeks...
You're doing a great job, Cory. Snakes aren't agressive and just want to be left alone. As long as you don't trip over them, step on them or put your hands or feet into an area they could be hiding in without first checking, you'll be fine. Just give them a wide berth.
Hahaha, going through that tunnel I was thinking of the movie Cloverfield. Giant attacking crabs!! Lol lots of critters out there. Tadpoles, crows & lizards oh my!

SC is looking fitter every episode. Good on him. I thru hiked back in 1990 and it seems the PCT has maybe re-routed since then - can't remember the tunnels SC has passed through. Couple of foot bridges over creeks that weren't around too and a load more hikers on the trail. Good to see the outdoors being appreciated. Hope it doesn't get too populated though. Part of the attraction of the PCT for me was the peace and solitude.
Cory, that was a skink. You are so interested in nature you should get the inaturalist ap for your phone. It can help you identify plant and animal species. The bird looked like a Raven which is much bigger than a crow. They are as intelligent as a parrot.
Thank you for your comment, but I think it is not a skink. Here is a link to photos of California skinks. Both the appearance and the habituate (wet/moist) seem to be inappropriate. www.californiaherps.com/identification/lizardsid/eumeces.id.html However, I agree the bird is a raven; the tail shape (a rectangle shilhouetted against the sky) distinguishes it from a crow where the sides are parallel.
Leveling up you are mmhhh...do you remember the first 100? You have changed exponentially as a hiker .... awesome to watch you put in so many miles...just started a diet...thanks for the added inspiration
Glad you got to see Panda one last time before his side trip for the wedding. You guys have an awesome friendship going there. Cool story about him getting his crampon back. I'm thinking maybe you need to hook up with some older person (either male or female) that goes about your pace so that you don't have to push yourself too much to keep up. Don't know where that guy went (Tom ?) but maybe him ? You need someone for support and maybe, to help push you just little to keep going ? You seem happier with a hiking companion. Hope you find one soon. Good Luck.

Backpacking at 5mph is crazy fast for backpack and generally not that helping. 2-3mph is generally pretty good because hiking long hours is generally far more effective then hiking fast. If you can hike for 12 hours at 2.5mph you make 30 miles per day, which would allow someone to finish the whole PCT in less then 90 days.

Tbh, the "hiking" on that hardball (not trail, but pavement) through there actually sucked, and I would put it high on my PCTs modification wish list for an actual dirt trail there instead even if it added a couple miles to the whole thing.

Was the Gorn Star Trek episode filmed there?

Do you know what town you are near here also?
At the end of this day for 2C he set up his tent on one of the only remaining open spots in Hiker Heaven - next to my tent - we met the next day.
My impression of Agua Dulce was not that of passing through a town per se, but rather a community of fairly well-off folks who prefer larger plots of non-prime land (horses, etc.) as opposed to city or in town lifestyles. Tbh, the "hiking" on that hardball (not trail, but pavement) through there actually sucked, and I would put it high on my PCTs modification wish list for an actual dirt trail there instead even if it added a couple miles to the whole thing.
