English translation included. Because the subs came from a different and shorter version, there are untranslated lines of dialog here and there. Nothing serious. There was heavy static between about the 2 to 4 minute marks. I removed what I could, making the dialog sound a bit hollow in the process. The audio is reasonably good the rest of the way.

Original version of Sen’s Rajesh Khanna
psychodrama Khamoshi (1969) and one of
Suchitra Sen’s best-known performances. She
plays Radha, the hospital nurse employed by
a progressive psychiatrist (Sanyal). She is
expected to develop a personal relationship
with the male patients as part of their therapy.
The doctor diagnoses Tapash’s
(B. Choudhury) problem as an unresolved
Oedipal dilemma - the inevitable
consequence, he says, for men who are
denied a nurturing woman. He orders the
nurse to play that role, even though on an
earlier, similar occasion she fell in love with
the patient. Radha bears up to Tapash’s
violence, wears red-bordered silk saris to
impersonate his mother, sings his poetic
compositions and, in the process, falls in love
yet again. In the end, having brought about
Tapash’s mental cure, Radha has a nervous
breakdown. Suchitra Sen’s hauntingly
beautiful, often partly lit close-ups set the tone
for the film’s visual style. Hemanta
Mukherjee’s music, e.g. Ei raat tomar amar,
used a whistling chorus as a sort of leitmotif
and contributed greatly to the movie’s
success.

মেঘে ঢাকা তারা,সমাজে এমন অনেক মানুষ আছে যারা সারা জীবন শুধু অন্যর জীবনে দ্বীপ জ্বেলে যাই,একসময় দেখা নিজের জীবনের প্রদীপ নিভে গেছে।কি নিদারুণ অভিনয় সত্যিই অসাধরন, ধন্যবাদ সকল কলাকৌশলী দের কে।
মিসেস সেন আজ আপনি নেই,কিন্তু এ জগতে যা রেখে গেলেন তা কোনদিন মুছবার নয়।
আশুতোষ মুখোপাধ্যায়ের দারুন এক উপন্যাস। আর সুচিত্রা সেনের দারুন ও মনকাড়া অভিনয়ে বার বার নিয়ে যায় ছবিটির কাছে।
সেই ছেলে বেলায় ছবিটি দেখেছি আর এখন ইন্টারনেটের বদৌলতে বার বার দেখছি আর মনটা উতলা হয়ে যাচ্ছে।

বার-বার দেখেও মনে হয় আবার দেখি। সত্যি রাধার ভূমিকায় অভিনয় করতে অন্য কোন নায়িকা মোটেও পারতো না, অসাধারণ অপূর্ব অভিনয়। দুই দুই বার প্রেমের অভিনয়ে আঘাত পেল😢। মন ছোয়া ছবিটি।

I didn't know, Ms. Bielefeld, that you knew and liked Bengali films also. Like you, while I was working on and watching it, I found it stunning. Unfortunately, the former copyright holder is fighting me over the film and there's at least a chance they'll send me a fraudulent copyright takedown notice (a strike) in the next few days. If so, the film will disappear from this channel for 3 weeks or so while I try and finally fight them off.
@@tommydan55 Waheeda Rehman's acting in Khamoshi didn't come anywhere near that of Suchitra Sen in this. Waheeda herself had acknowledged saying she could portray only 30 percent of what Sen did. There's an unfathomable depth and enigma in everything Sen does, that certainly sets her leagues apart from any other actors or actresses.
You may watch Uttar Falguni by her in the double role of mother-daughter duo. 🙂

Saw khamoshi recently and the next day saw this original film.
Although Waheeda ji is huge actor (and one of my favourites) but Madam Suchitra ji is at another level altogether.
She has not acted but she has lived the character of Radha.

Most who commented lauded Suchitra Sen forgetting one of the greatest director Bengal has produced Mr Asit Sen. He is almost forgotten by the collective memory of the Bengalis ... so sad.

সেখানে উত্তমকুমার আসতেন ডাক্তার হয়ে যিনি ভালবাসায় বিশ্বাস করেন না। ঠিক সেই সময় ওনাকে রাধার কেসটা দেওয়া হতো। আর রাধা ওনাকে ঘিরে সুস্থ হয়ে উঠতো আর উত্তমকুমারের চোখ দিয়ে ফোঁটা হয়ে ফুটে উঠত ভালবাসা। আহা দারুণ হতো তাই না!!

I’ve always been a Madhubala fan from my childhood. But I must confess that Suchitra’s beauty seems to me to have been absolutely marvelous. She’s probably not as vivacious as Madhu on camera, but her ability to convey a depth of feeling is on a par with Meena Kamari’s.
I agree with you 100%. The two actresses are almost equally beautiful. Madhubala might have been the more vivacious and her greatest strength is light comedy, I think. I never thought much of Madhubala as a dramatic actress, but that's where Suchitra Sen really shines. And I agree with the comparison to Meena Kumari as well. Thank you for leaving your comment.
Madhubala was not beautiful like Suchitra or even classically beautiful for that matter. If you're able to move beyond her glamour and loose charm and look past those, you'll notice that her eyes were small, face heavy and large, and nose bulbous. She was intensely fair, and hence glamorous and had a flashy smile. Madhubala had a loose catchy charm hanging on her face that acted as an instantaneous hook on the viewers. Madhubala's beauty was all lighting and camera angles, because whenever camera took even a slightly low angle, her face seemed to lose its charm ( something that doesn't seem to happen with Suchitra, Madhuri or Aishwarya ). On the other hand, Suchitra had a perfect oval face, with big doe eyes, a narrow and sharp nose and an equally flashy smile where everything was in proportion, making her classically beautiful. Madhuri Dixit has reportedly said that even she hasn't been ever able to reproduce a smile like that of Suchitra Sen.
On the acting front I've always kept Suchitra, Meena Kumari and Nutan at par. These three form the benchmark for the depth and expressivity in acting that lead to their mystique. Madhubala was in no comparison with these three. ❤️

I believe the name Vasant Choudhury is spelled and pronounced as Basanta Choudhury in Bengali. In Hindi and Marathi speaking states it is spelled as Vasant but in Bengali speaking states it is spelled as Basanta.

@@tommydan55 It is not only the spelling, the pronunciation is totally different. Only the meaning is the same. It means Spring …. the season. In Wikipedia his name is correctly spelled as Basanta.

এত সুন্দর অভিনয়..আজ বুঝলাম শুধু মাত্র দুটো চোখ দিয়ে জীবনে কত কি বলে দেওয়া যায়..মহানায়িকার ওই দুটো চোখের expression গুলো দেখলে কেউ কোনোদিন বলবে এটা অভিনয় ?? এটা আসলে একটা সিনেমা?...আজ বুঝছি সিনেমা টা কেনো কোনো অ্যাওয়ার্ড পায়নি😅...
আর ওই গান ,এই রাত তোমার আমার,ওই বাঁশির সুর.কিছুতেই ভুলতে পারছিনা..এখনও মনে হচ্ছে না অভিনয় দেখলাম.. অনেক সিনেমা দেখেছি এরম feeling কোনোদিন হয়নি....শেষটা এরকমও হয়!!..সত্যিই তাহলে তাপসবাবুর উপন্যাস এ মিলন হলো না...
যাক গে যিনি গল্প লিখেছেন তাকে অনেক কোটি প্রণাম..তখন একটা দিন ছিল যখন বাংলা সিনেমার ও রিমেক করা হতো বিভিন্ন ভাষায়,লোকজন তা দেখতো appreciate করত, যেমন এই বাংলা সিনেমা টাকে tamil (1960), hindi (1968) দুটো ভাষাতেই remake করা হয়েছিল...

তখনকার চলচ্চিত্র জগতের সবচেয়ে শিক্ষিত ও মার্জিত নায়ক ছিলেন বসন্ত চৌধুরী । একসময় বাজারে একটা আলোচনা চালু ছিল যে উত্তম কুমার ছাড়া সুচিত্রা সেন কিছু করতে পারবে না। পরিচালক অসিত সেন উত্তম ছাড়া সুচিত্রাকে দিয়ে অভিনয় করিয়ে এটা প্রমান করে দিয়েছিলেন সুচিত্রা সুচিত্রাই । তবে এটা ঠিক বলেছেন যে উত্তম হলে ছবিটি আলাদা মাত্রা পেত ।

এ ধরনের সিনেমা তৈরি করতে হলে মননশীল হতে হবে যা আজকাল দেখা যায়না সচরাচর মানুষের মনে অনুভূতি জাগেনা তখনকার সময়ের মানুষের রুচিবোধ আলাদা ছিলো ষাট বছর পরেও এই সিনেমাগুলর আবেদন একটুও কমেনি৷
This movie is remade or remake in telugu language with the name " Chivaraku migiledi"( means Lastly what remains) suchitra sen lead role is acted by "Savitri" she is top actress in south indian in all languages ( i.e Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayaalam) her life is linked with the movie she died due to over consumption of alcohol at an young age ( even before reaching 50 years or so)

The End/Samapti have allowed an ambit for creation of another stunning movie by Late Suchitra Sen being the Psychiatric Patient and Uttam Kumar being the Psychiatrist. Is there any such film? I have not seen much. But I favour the Duo most.
Well, the Hindi language film, Khamoshi, made in 1959 is a remake of Deep Jweley Jai. But yes, this film is outstanding. Thank you for leaving your comment.
