      Hi Darren! Though the price difference does seem quite drastic depending on the quality of EL wire (not including battery pack or electronics), we believe what the cost is on the front end, is saved in time on the backend. Early on at Ellumiglow, we've seen and experienced first hand the shortcomings of EL Wire - Laser Wire was released to more or less offer an alterative solution to inherent issues with EL Wire. We've spent too many hours repairing and diagnosing problems with EL Wire and understand it's limitations over our 15 years of combined expereience. These issues especially make themselves apparent when used in applications where there is bending and flexibility (costuming, textiles). Laser Wire is a brighter, more reliable, and durable alternative to EL Wire, and so for the value of time and frustration saved, objectively comes with a higher but still reasonable cost.

  • @CritGage
    @CritGage 6 років тому +32

    That converter is overkill for that length of wire. Trying to make it seem to expensive to convince people to buy your more costly system? Also EL wire isn't that expensive, not even on YOUR store. 15 meters (45 feet) of your EL wire is only $45 and the converter (the one in the video) is only $40. Totaling at $80 compared to the price of the Laser Wire in the video, $335, which is the cost of your most expensive laser wire system.

    • @EllumiglowPage
      @EllumiglowPage  6 років тому +2

      Your math is incorrect... As of today, 50ft of EL Wire x $1.35 = $67.50 | Jumbo Inverter + AC Adapter = $47.98 = $115.48 - To say that it is overkill is also an incorrect statement, as the jumbo inverter can power up to 50ft. We could have used as a different example our MEGA100+ EL Wire Inverter which powers up to 100ft of EL Wire, and would be brighter and have the product last a little longer, however the cost would be $222.48 for that kit. The products we used in the video were the most appropriate comparison for a cost analysis of two competing technologies. However if you believe that Laser Wire is too expensive for your application, then that's cool too. Thanks for watching!

      Hi joblessalex! Thanks for your feedback. At around 0:43 , we mention the components needed for a 50 foot EL Wire system - at 50 feet the cost is going to be a bit above $50 for the wire alone. This is more or less just some side glowing fiber optic cable with a laser on the end. Now that I think about it, I could go get a super cheap roll of side glowing fiber optic cable, and then a small low power laser to shine through it. I could even just get away with using LEDs to shine through it, though the brightness might suffer a bit.

      We would encourage you to buy both products and post a video that showcase the differences between Laser Wire® and ANY plastic optical fiber on the market and let us know if you still feel that way. Laser Wire® is a specialized glass fiber that is extremely thin, flexible, consistent and even brightness among many other qualities. Sure, there are less expensive alternative lighting sources available, but Laser Wire® plays a key role in the market due to its properties that enable it to integrate easily to many objects from aerospace to retail and trade show displays.

    Laserwire seems cool if only there was a cheaper RGB kit. One where you could easily change through colors like RGB LEDs. The other question I have is how easy is it to change the length? EL wire I can cut to any length. Can I do that with laser wire?

    • @EllumiglowPage
      @EllumiglowPage  2 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately, there’s not a less expensive RGB module at the moment. As technology is rapidly changing, that possibility might be there in another year or two.
      For cutting, the wire can be cut with household scissors, and it will glow to the point where it’s cut. But there is a max length, which for our Pop profile is 5m, or for the accent profile, up to 10m.

  • @Oswee

    I don't get it... so... i want to make wearable. In order to do that i need to cut EL wire in several pieces which will be connected back to single inverter via wearable wires. It could be even different colors. What would be cost of several color Laser Wire setup. Lets say i need 3 separate pieces for single "hoodie/whatever". I think the argument about broken EL replacement cost is absurd. With the same success laser wire could be damaged.

    • @EllumiglowPage
      @EllumiglowPage  6 років тому +1

      Live Free and DIY you are correct, the Laser Wire is a 0.9mm DIA and only comes in that diameter. However, we've had a number of customers buy off-the-shelf PE tubing and slide over the wire. This works great for having a larger diffusion area. We are also working on a TiO2 tubing that will diffuse multiple strands of wire inside the tubing. Which is great for color mixing. Feel free to send us an email to info@ellumiglow.com if you need specific help on a project. Thanks!

    How well does the laser wire hold up to outdoor usage?

    • @EllumiglowPage
      @EllumiglowPage  3 роки тому +4

      It holds up quite well actually. We typically recommend using our Commercial Grade tubing when using outdoors. The jacketing is more robust and won’t degrade in UV or heat. The laser modules should be kept dry, but the wire itself will work nearly indefinitely.

    Adafruit's EL wire lasts over 20k hours

    • @EllumiglowPage
      @EllumiglowPage  4 роки тому

      Noorquacker First of all, no it doesn't. Second, if it did, how does it look at 20k hours? Did you use their inverters? If so, they operate at close to 2000Hz which degrades the phosphor by about 2-3x faster. The phosphor they use has a half life of about 3k hours under normal operation. Which means that the brightness after 3k hours will be half the brightness. So let's call that half-life to 1.5k hours generously. The wire will continue to dim in brightness throughout it's usable lifespan so if it started at 150cd/m, after 1.5k hours it will be 75cd/m, and continue to drop out. If it does happen to reach 20k hours by chance, you might be in the ballpark of 1-2cd/m, which you might be able to tell it's lit by turning it on in a pitch black cave. Laser Wire on the other hand will be roughly 200x-1000x brighter at those same time intervals. Then with EL Wire, you have to replace the whole wire once it goes out or dims to the point that you can't see it. Depending on the application it is used and the installation time required to replace the whole line, it is likely going to be more expensive just replacing the EL Wire due to the additional labor costs and headaches.

      If you run a quick search on Amazon, you will find a number of 12V to 5V step down converters, for about $7-10. This would allow you to plug the OpalDrive install cable directly to the battery (through the step down converter). This way, you could hook up to a switch or tie to the lights.

      Ellumiglow would the lights last as long as the battery then?

    • @EllumiglowPage
      @EllumiglowPage  7 років тому

      Yes. The power draw on the OpalDrive Laser module is very small, under 1A. So as long as the car battery is charged, it should have no problem providing power to the light. It should also have relatively no effect on the actual performance of the car battery due to the low power draw.

    ngl laserwire is boring. its literally just light diffused through a fiber optic cable. the way el wire works is way more interesting. plus, laserwire fades the longer the cable is. the darker the further away from the light source. no matter how well made the wire is, this problem still persists. el wire has a constant brightness along the wire, no matter how long it is as long as you have a powerful enough inverter.

      You can PWM the input of the laser module to increase or decrease the brightness of the laser module placed on either end. @@WaschyNumber1 sure, a charger can last 25k hours no problem. But you still need an inverter and EL Wire. The EL Wire will be replaced 5x+ before then.

      @@WaschyNumber1 if you show the data with the driving conditions (voltage/frequency), along with testing data of brightness and time, then we could determine whether a scam or not. However, to our knowledge, there are currently no EL Phosphors on the market with that kind of lifespan.

      Hi there! Yes - off the shelf, Laser Wire is more expensive than EL Wire. The point of this video is to educate that over a period of time, EL Wire ends up becoming more expensive due to brightness and reliability issues with cheap EL Wire and EL inverters, and the short lifespan of 6000 hours before replacement.
