Literally NOTHING happens for the entire first hour, and then the rest of the movie is basically viewed through a pinhole. This should've been a short film.

Agreed. It's like watching the intro to a James Bond film.

Being a radio engineer, I did find that the sound & audio in the film was some of the best I've ever experienced in the theater. That part was Def 4.5/5 couches ; )

6/10 for me.. I whole heartily agree about the sound design.. some of the best especially for an indie film.. I also agree about the tiny little light.. I had this on my projector and still couldn’t figure out what was going on.. my biggest gripe was this being found footage and showing things in order but there were times when the images on screen were very surreal and not taking place in the are where people were at the time- so that took me out of it a bit.. while I liked this more than Blair witch I still think paranormal activity and clover field had a better payoff for me-

Should have been a short film.
    But still amazing cosmic horror.

Saw this last night! Awesome sound (the opening is really haunting) and some really beautiful shots in this (that one upside-down chase shot in part 3, WOW!). I appreciated most of the practical effects, they were shot cleverly. But the film descends into a whole lot of "wouldn't this look cool?" without any clear intention, and the "third act" takes up most of the movie. Personally, I didn't think the first 2 parts of the movie set up the relationships between the characters. It felt like this was a cast that is close in real life but didn't know how to show these particular characters to the audience. Like something my theatre school friends and I would have made together-which I love, but it took me out of the movie itself. Some really good filmmaking and committed performances, but the storytelling just didn't work for me, and an outside editor could have really improved the experience.

I agree with your review. Alot of the film was too dark to see. It was all over the place. The camera work was nauseating and at times the sound work was misleading. At one point I didn't know if someone was bleeding out or taking a leak in the tent.

Finally caught this tonight. Very unnerving stuff! I really dug the experience but had no idea it was a Skinamarink type experience Horror film than straight up horror. The sound design is immense and I wish I caught it in the theatre! I also wish we had more than a peephole to look through for a camera 😂. I do think it adds to its unnerving nature though. Really got under my skin a few times. Definitely too long for its own good too. Gave it 3.5/5 couches for being unnerving and probably the most original found footage film I’ve ever seen.

The bizarre lighting and sound design combined with the unique practical visuals only served to continue building dread for me. It felt like the audience was intended to be as confused as the MC. He had no clue what kind of monstrous reality he’d been thrown into. He had no more knowledge of what was happening than the audience. I’ve rarely felt as connected to an onscreen character’s experience. I was very impressed and was totally along for the ride.

Nice review Chris! Seems we felt similarly about this one, I really think there were some decent and impressive practical effects somewhere in this movie we just couldn’t see them! Poor lighting and camerawork…

Yup. “Cloverfield” had me running to the lobby to puke from the shaky-cam. And I’m the kind of guy who loves riding roller coasters with no problem. But shaky-cam and me? No thanks.

I got the impression that Robbie went crazy and chopped up his friends, brother and then himself. (He gave himself a few wallops before doing it to others, however) Did he bring the hatchet or was it left behind? I'm going to assume it was left behind and due to the natural environment, he just lost it. I didn't like all the sounds that were produced in this movie. Especially with all the blood, small lens and tunnel vision. It frustrated me during the last half up until the last five or ten minutes. Love the last five minutes. Best part of the film.

First off in the tent when we see the tentacles wrapping around Robbie and wife hands and legs u can see them separating their legs as if to penetrate them but idk also the tunnel of lights is a wornhole gateway in the mother ship at least that's what I think and lastly I think he was being mind controlled because after he sees himself I think his time variant only dealt the blow to head because he was scared seeing himself bloody and bewildered when it comes to the heads in the pole he couldn't of put them there because they looked chewed and regurgitated so it's safe to say the creature ate and regurgitated their heads and mind controlled Robbie to stake on poles as a form of mental torture and a show of power as exemplified when he finally castrated and disemboweled himself.

I'm not bothered by shaky cam/found footage stuff but I am wary of the level of gore in this one. 🤢 I'm seeing it tonight so I'm trying to prepare myself by watching spoiler-free reviews, but of course none of them actually say WHAT the gore consists of so it's not exactly helping, haha.

Is there a specific editing software that you use for films? If so, would it work for editing short films? Before I continue working on this horror film, I would like to figure out how a film camera and the editing software work. Which is why I am going to start with making a few short films.

I use Adobe Premiere, but others use Final Cut Pro (both are awesome). There's also a free software that's pretty robust called DaVinci Resolve. I've used it a little bit and it works well.

Watched this tonight. What a huge let down. Hated it and barely made it to the end. Why on earth was it nearly 2 hours long!? 15-20 minutes of unnecessary fluff could have easily been cut out. Only positive for me was that I paid no money to see it lol. 2/5.

Didn’t like or dislike it really. Where it lacked in visual, it really made up for in sound. Sounds can easily be as powerful as imagery. The cinematography was good and had some very beautiful shots. Confused but it was definitely an experience in the theaters! 7 out of 10 I think

Just now watched this one, did not enjoy it. While I thought Skinamarink was interesting and weird, this was a patience trying chore. I won't watch either again for different reasons. A 3/10 for me, I did laugh at an amputation near the end. R.I.P. Dave Brockie.

This whole movie...it should have been a short(someone else said this too..and I agree) the 1st entire hour..meh. like, ok, they're gonna make a video and I Loved the cinematography and sounds~ it was dreamlike and I loved some of the shots of the ground, and the sounds were awesome...
    Ok, SPOILERS >>>
the axe in the ground made me think of Excalibur for some reason..and the flipped cam when running, I thought that if they just put the camera down
    .but I get it.
The last 25m I think ..they stumbled onto some sort of "test ground/area 51"/possibly some sort of cryptid/or cosmic horror beast...I wondered if they died in the plane/ I wondered if some sort of troglodytes from deep within the earth came out. I wondered if the donkeys were skinwalkers.. overall..I agree 2.5/5 but the ending was well done..just wish there was some context.

      Fwiw
Movies that made me physically queasy>or uncomfortable etc => hard to say. Saw Blair witch in the theatre and they handed out souvenir barf bags. I wasn't affected. I wasn't affected by the shaking in Cloverfield. It is kind of odd because i have seen So.many films, but the one that Got me physcially was the original paranormal activity. I remember it ended and i could Not even get up to turn off the dvd player ..i felt like a freight train ran into my chest..it also scared me so badly THE NEXT DAY- i was thinking about it and called my partner and made him come home for a minute ..I've seen so many films, the only one that really stands out for physical discomfort> the abyss. Because I have thallasophobia. But the cam here- it annoyed me more than made me queasy etc. I wanted to reach in and force the cam to stay still and just let me look around. But I absolutely loved the sound

Glad to hear is good but let me tell you something clever field shaky camera people complaining let me tell you something cloverfield has to be one of the most underrated movies ever anybody who likes found-footage take a second and watch the movie again without the b******* that movie is perfect if you want to criticize probably the ending could be a little bit more tied up or loose losing up but because there's going to be more sequels towards that direction instead of like an anthology of movies but so freaking awesome Cloverfield I wish you get back to like that world that universe and and just start doing it again

    • @izzyjones7108
      @izzyjones7108 Рік тому

I remember I did a random movie survey before Cloverfield came out. I'd Never heard of it. Was shown a Blip and asked whether I'd watch it..I remember saying "probably not"- but..then it popped up and I watched it and Loved it. I have regretted that "prob not" ..I don't understand the whole shake argument. I wasn't affected by Blair witch (still have the souvenir barf bag) or Cloverfield. Imo it fit the theme..out of the trilogy I think I liked 10 Cloverfield lane the best but the last bit of Cloverfield was AWESOME.

Yeah. You have to say something if you are a reviewer but it was absolute nonsense for the first 90% of the movie and then some actual cinematic footage at the end. They are all pale imitations of "The Blair Witch Project" even if they are done better. (yes I know what I just said)
