Wendell Gee (The House Bound Goats)

- A while back, a small business opened in Buffalo, Minnesota that quickly became a beating heart and kind of community living room for craft beer lovers, music lovers and lovers of good old fashioned human connection and conversation. And Wednesday nights at Hayes Public House grew into a safe haven for a cast of musical misfits (sometimes known as THE DITCHWEED GOATS) who've found a home and place to play their exceedingly eclectic mix of acoustic music. But since recent world events have put a hold on HPH Music Wednesdays - and (like most musicians) we're still desperate to make music anyway we can, we thought we'd try something different: playing together, while apart.
This is our "take 1"
We hope you enjoy.
(Thanks Mike Mills and Michael Stipe of R.E.M. for the gorgeous tune.) Players
Barron John Whittet - guitar, vocals, accordion
Melissa Wojochouski - vocals
Bob LaMont - banjo solo
Dallas Bogner - banjo
Pugs Hayes - Bass
Erin Walsh - cello
Winslow - emotional support
This is one of my funeral songs and this is an absolutely beautiful version. With love and thanks from Buffalo, NY
Every time I hear this song, it feels weird. I have been called Wendell Gee since I was in elementary school. I love REM, but I didn't discover this song until I was in my late teens. Trippy.
The amazing thing about this REM song are the layers- The layers in the impressionistic lyrics, the layers in the rustic instrumentation and the layers in the chord progressions, melody and harmonies. They all blend together but at the same time stand apart- showcasing the genius each band member brought to the collective table. Its high art.
If the wind were colors, and if the air could speak...such beautiful words, and so beautifully rendered by your combo, delightful!
Wow, great ear ! Which layer in which verse are these words?. I missed those. I'm still trying to fit in the backing Mike Mills vocals "gonna miss you, boy" . Thanks ! :D

Some of REM's lyrics, especially from the early years, are of course known for their obscurity, some bordering on the inscrutable. But I'm pretty sure these are accurate.
That's when Wendell Gee
Takes a tug upon the string
That held the line of trees
Behind the house he lived in
He was reared to give respect
But somewhere down the line, he chose
To whistle as the wind blows (gonna miss you, boy)
And whistle as the wind blows through the leaves (gonna miss you, boy)
He had a dream one night
That the tree had lost its middle
So he built a trunk of chicken wire
To try to hold it up
But the wire, the wire turned to lizard skin
And when he climbed inside
There wasn't even time to say (gonna miss you, boy)
Goodbye to Wendell Gee (gonna miss you, boy)
So whistle as the wind blows (gonna miss you, boy)
Whistle as the wind blows with me (gonna miss you, boy)
There wasn't even time to say (gonna miss you, boy)
Goodbye to Wendell Gee (gonna miss you, boy)
So whistle as the wind blows (gonna miss you, boy)
And listen as the wind blows through the leaves (gonna miss you, boy)
If the wind were colors (gonna miss you, boy)
And if the air could speak (gonna miss you, boy)
Then whistle as the wind blows (gonna miss you, boy)
And whistle as the wind blows (gonna miss you, boy)
Awesome, thank you ! @@markmontimurro8921
"gonna miss you, boy" Lol and based off a used car dealer in georgia, brilliant! same with "voice of harolf" linear notes from a gospel album, genius!@@markmontimurro8921
Wow, what a perfectly beautiful rendition of one of REM’s most beautiful songs.
Also my favorite r.e.m. song. Beautiful.
Just one of the most beautiful songs ever for me. The lyrics are typically great and the music just complements them so well. Top 5 for mr personally. “ But the wire turned …” love that. This man lives on another level I think. I hope he understands that he’s amazing
It's not one of REM's better known songs but for me it's their best. The lyrics are, to me at least, a mystery, but that melody, AND WHAT A KILLER CHORUS!! Yours is the only cover I've found on UA-cam so far and I absolutely love it.
Well Done!!!
Beautiful 😊
My favourite REM song, thank you for this lovely rendition!
That was beautiful! Possibly my favourite REM song, and sooo underappreciated. Great job!
This is beautiful
Beautiful! 🤩. I’m not crying, you’re crying! 😢
beautiful version of a hugely underappreciated REM song... well done!
Beautifully done. One of my favorite R.E.M. songs.
Love the addition of the banjo. Beautiful touch.
I keep coming back to this. Fantastic. With love from the UK
This is a wonderful version. I sing this song to my 18 mo. old grandson and he loved this also.
Wonderful! Simply wonderful! You all did this great R.E.M. song justice!
So, I have listened to REM for years. Automatic for the people got me through a major period of depression and anxiety in like 1992. I recently rediscovered this song, and you folks did an awesome job. The fact that this was in the dark days of Covid and how you did it is amazing. The cello, the stand up bass and of course the accordion, no shock you are Midwesterners. I live in Iowa. I retire soon and if I pass through Buffalo, MN I will find this bar or a bar. I bet if Stipe saw this he would be very impressed, you folks nailed it. Seriously, an orchestra sound, amazing. So, thank you.
Great stuff. Thanks for putting it into the ether.
I just now ran across this. My favorite REM song. Beautiful rendition. Well done!
Really ace cover; well done!
Beautiful thanks putting this together
Top cover. I have loved this song for many years
Brilliant! I love the song! And I love your cover of it! Thank you for putting this together and sharing it! I feel like you guys did a really great job of capturing the spirit of the original while at the same time making it your own. The line "There wasn't even time to say goodbye to Wendell Gee" has always moved me. 😢
Banjo is a magic instrument.
Wow! This is a beautiful rendition. Loved it.
Gonna miss you boy.
Chills m8. Nailed it.
Well done guys
Wonderful song ..well done
Lovely rendition of a great R.E.M. song. Tennis fan?
Verte good
Awesome!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much for doing that : ) That’s one of my very favorite songs & I’ve been out here in the garage practicing it.
Your performance was so earnest & matched the humility of my rural garage setting very well. Like friends I’ve yet to meet. I’m grateful!
This was so very good. Thank you for posting.
Muy bella version.👏👏👏👏
Pure class mate, well done
Beautiful. Period.

This reminds me of my crazy days in Charleston South Carolina, before that city got waaay over discovered .
Loved this
Lovely rendition of an REM gem.
That's a beautiful rendition of the Americana (aka hillbilly folk music) classic: R.E.M.' s Wendell Gee (from 1985!)
Excellent cover. Well done :))
Excellent!
Great!
Nicely done!
Thank you for showing love to an underappreciated song, that was beautiful!
:)
Awesome, really.
Very good
Muito bom 😃
I cannot tell, is she singing “gonna miss you boy”
Indeed she is - although it’s all a bit gauzy in the mix. Have to admit back in 1985 when I first heard and fell in love with this song I couldn’t tell what Mike Mills was singing. That was part of the mystery of those early R.E.M. records. No printed lyrics. Everyone guessing !
cara de cachaceiro kkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Dang!
Better than REM?
Terrific! I'm running a little Twitter project to tweet a cover of every R.E.M. song, I'd love to include this twitter.com/imitationofrem
Better than the original. For me REM are a bit like Velvet Underground in that the performances don't always match the songwriting.
