My wild guess is a shortage of funds available due to Covid and lack of visitors to all the Trusts’ properties. Now they’re getting their financial feet back.

I appreciate the the Trust isn't a bottomless financial well, but my heart hurts for all the beautiful properties that the Trust couldn't save. Thankfully, those that have been saved are a wonderful collection of our richest family histories.

The home of Vita Sackville-West where she grew up and had numerous affairs with women in the early 1900 to mid 1950 - Violet Keppel (neeTrefusis) and later Virginia Woolf with many in-between. As a woman, she was not permitted to inherit Knowle which broke her heart and she never really got over it due to the unfairness of it all. She married Harold Nicolson (at Knowle) and had two sons who have both passed on. Harold also, like his wife, had liaisons with various gentleman, as she had affairs with women - and yet they loved each dearly. One of the sons, Nigel, wrote a rather beautiful and moving tribute to his parents in a "Portrait of a Marriage." Vita was a well respected novelist in her own right, as was Harold, having been a British politician, diplomat, historian, biographer, diarist, novelist, lecturer, journalist, broadcaster, and gardener.

Comment by a true socialist that believes that anyone has more money than them is an oppressor (unless they are the mega rich Socialist or Communist Politicians like Tony Blair, Tony Ben, Putin, Gorbavhov, Stalin etc ......whether you agree with the people that collected these articles is irrelevant but their preservation of the history is important for future generation. Even Stalin did not destroy the Tsar's Winter and Summer palaces or sell off the majority treasures and artworks because he was very aware that a nation with no history has no future.

It can be seen as an odd way of preserving the original building(s) behind the one that's being restored. Ironically the renovations of the past preserved the original houses that were there and continued to preserve them. At some point the more modern shells could be reconstructed with a modern under structure and the original house behind the walls be restored to their original glory. Or possibly simply be carefully fully peeled back to reveal the original structure and a copy built somewhere else

Knole House was 'gifted' to Henry 8th and because of the amount of land attached and the Weald in Kent, which was accessable from barges from Greenwich and Eltham Palaces as close to the Medway River, and open land with lots of deer and boar was great for hunting, so became a prime hunting venue for Henry and his large retinue of sycophants.
