Marvin, he was a friend of mine And he could sing a song His heart in every line Marvin sang of the joy and pain He opened up our minds And I still can hear him say Aw talk to me so you can see What's going on Say you will sing your songs Forevermore (evermore) Gonna be some sweet sounds Coming down on the nightshift I bet you're singing proud Oh I bet you'll pull a crowd Gonna be a long night It's gonna be all right On the nightshift Oh you found another home I know you're not alone On the nightshift Jackie (Jackie), hey what'you doing now It seems like yesterday When we were working out Jackie (Jackie, oh) you set The world on fire You came and gifted us Your love it lifted us Higher and higher Keep it up and We'll be there At your side Oh say you will sing Your songs forevermore (evermore) Gonna be some sweet sounds Coming down on the nightshift I bet you're singing proud Oh I bet you'll pull a crowd Gonna be a long night It's gonna be all right On the nightshift Oh you found another home I know you're not alone On the nightshift Gonna miss your sweet voice That soulful voice On the nightshift We all remember you Ooh the songs are coming through At the end of a long day It's gonna be okay On the nightshift You found another home I know you're not alone On the nightshift
This is a beautiful, haunting song. I first heard it at age 15. Now, 40 years later, I have a great appreciation for it. I understood the tributes in the song, but it had another special meaning for me. When I was in high school, my dad worked the night shift as a security guard in a North Carolina textile mill. I remember listening to this song as he would hug me and leave for work. He had been wounded in Korea, and lived in pain from 1951 until he passed away in 2004. That man worked his butt off for me. I always had the best clothes, and I never went hungry. He finally received 100% disability from the VA four years before he died. I am now a retired veteran myself, and I was able to retire at age 54 in large part to the effects of my dad getting me off to a good start. RIP PAB.
Excellent song and performance. These artists and that time were from another galaxy. In this live presentation they unfortunately only do a dubbing with playback of the excellent version that they recorded in the studio some time before.
0:05 hello New York City. Hahahahaha 👍 shout-out to MDA telethon for this tribute to to the Commodores. Much love and respect to the Commodores for the night shift song. Yes I am listening to music to get my day started and this is another beautiful song that I love and I also love the commodores I love the old music but it is not old to me but my great grandchildren call it old music but they love it and they jam with me when I have them with me and they tell their parents that they love to spend the weekend with me and I am teaching them about our loss of these songs and I love them for enjoying it with me and I love ❤😂🎉😢😮😅😊you guys
I'm old enough to remember this well when it came out, and back then, tbh, after the fashion of the times, I guess, I thought it only OK, but a bit corny. Now, I think it's a wonderful song.

I was only a teenager when I first listened to this. I liked it then, but now, wow. I had no idea how good it really was.
Bruce Springsteen did a good remake of this song.
There’s not a single artist In the last 20 years that people will still be listening to in 30 years. We’ve had the best of times.

They didn't. Three of these people are still performing as The Commodores.
