My dad has the extended 12" single of this song. Around 20 years ago he started moving his vinyls to CD's, I pretty much heard his entire singles collection over an entire month blasting at full volume in our house as he transferred them across. I knew half of the songs, but the one that I'll never forget hearing for the 1st time is 'Nightshift'. My dad loves his hi-fi and invested in having the best possible sound he could afford and the production of this song really comes across when you have a high end sound system. The percussion and harmonies are so superior and so organic, If you have a music streaming service, listen to this song with the highest quality bitrate, close your eyes and enjoy a masterpiece. Whats even better is the meaning of the song, the lyrics are a perfect homage to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, they refer to their songs so many times...and even better...'Nightshift' means 'heaven' and when you listen to the song with that in mind, its a whole new song. ***** Yeah, they were pretty miserly and greedy, though they did break some amazing artists. Over the years, I directed a half ozen videos for Motown, and they were okay to work with. The artists though, were always great to work with. Chip

I sooo love this song, Chip, thank you for creating this with them. The first time I heard it, my first husband, also a musician, had just passed. It lifted me up and took away the pain, for the time being. It does so each time I hear it. God bless.
Nightshift is a tribute song from The Commodores to RB soul singers Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, both died in 1984. The single was released in January 1985 in the United States.
I’m an 85 year old great-grandmother from PEI, Canada - one of all-time favourite pieces of music - along with all the rest of their music + MOTOWN - never been anything like The Motown Music
The comment section is full of remembering, dedicating to working nightshifts, loved ones, deceased ones. This song carries the emotions of people. Truly SOUL music. masterpiece!!
What a wonderful tribute to Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, couldn't get better than this. Love the line "Gonna miss your sweet voice, that soulful noise" at the end....mind blowing.
My dad would play this song repeatedly .Me and my sister would laugh because the moment we get in the car with him,HE WOULD PLAY IT!😂Dad had such a Beautiful voice. He passed 7 days ago and this grief is so unbearable.Rest In Peace Dad on your " Nightshift"❤
"Nightshift" by the Commodores is a soulful tribute to two legendary artists, Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, who both passed away in 1984, shortly before the song's release. The song honors their contributions to music, particularly their role in shaping R&B and soul. It is filled with emotion and nostalgia, serving as a reminder of their influence and how their music continues to resonate, even after their deaths. The title "Nightshift" metaphorically refers to how their voices and legacies continue to work their magic, even in the afterlife. The nightshift can be seen as a time when their spirits "work" by comforting and inspiring people through their music, despite no longer being physically present. The song praises them for their roles in bringing joy and healing to people during difficult times, as referenced in the lines, "You found another home, I know you're not alone, on the nightshift." The Commodores use the song to bridge a sense of loss with a sense of hope. The melancholic tone is balanced with a message of continuity and legacy, portraying the idea that the essence of Gaye and Wilson lives on through the music they created. Musically, "Nightshift" is reflective, with smooth, gentle rhythms and soulful harmonies that evoke the emotional depth of the subject matter. It became a crossover hit, resonating with audiences for its heartfelt delivery and timeless theme of honoring those who paved the way in music history. The song is not only a tribute but a reminder that great art and the spirit of its creators can transcend time and death.
Such a heartfelt tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. I never get tired of listening to this. It's a shame that Lionel Ritchie and the Commodores couldn't put their differences aside and do a tour together. It's Easy, Easy like Sunday Morning
Lionel Richie became a pompous ass guy. he thought he was more important than his old band just ; because he sold millions of albums if it wasn't for the commodores he wouldn't be successful
There was friction between the Commodores and Lionel Richie as his role in the band drew increasing levels of attention. The other band members felt hurt to read newspaper music critics writing to the effect of “what is a talent like Lionel Richie still doing playing with the funk band Commodores”. Ouch. Once Lionel started with his first solo album, the band agreed to wait as he recorded it on the understanding he’d come back to the band, which he did. However, when that solo album took off, he was approached to record a follow up solo album. He asked the band members to go on hold again, but as they had bills to pay and mouths to feed, they couldn’t afford to stand on the sidelines for Lionel, thus leading to their separation.
Listening in a town in the UK. Europe not in a good place currently, Ukraine has been invaded, we are war torn again. So needed to relax and this so helped. This world has so much Soul in it, just needed to remember that and find something great.
I don't even listen to the radio anymore. There's nothing on it for me. Take me back to the 70s and 80s music. Thank God for UA-cam and the other outlets that let's us listen to what we want anytime.
I am SO grateful for the ability to compose my own play lists! Would really love it if we could throw out the damned commercials but hey...we still get the music of our choice, eh?
Come on, Mark. There are so many beautiful song today on the radio. And so many young musicans, who build a bridge between our youth and their youth. (Sorry for my bad english). For example this duo: ua-cam.com/video/ZPAmDULCVrU/v-deo.html
I'm really missing the '60s '70s and '80s at this moment. It was a time when people had to have real talent to make it but in cafes, you could get stage time. Not like today where the music industry is run by corporate marketers and $$ motivated product designers. Back then music was mostly created, not manufactured. Every generation has its high points. Back then music was honest and real, and if you chose the right groups it promoted fun & hippie love. It was an amazing time for growing up. It was an amazing time for music. I still play this noise in my home all day long. :)
listening to this song and other oldies makes me realize there was a time when life was not depressing and people genuinely enjoyed being alive. thanks to whoever recorded this i get to go back in time and have a taste of good music.
I totally agree, I know this is a bit later than the 60's but that is when I grew up. I've posted this before but I'm in ovetime in this game of "life" so if only I could find a time machine to take me back and leave me there with the music.
I agree in a way. I think - and this may sound stupid at first - it is because of the digitalism / internet that this feelings are a thing of the past. We just did not know didn't we? We knew so so little about everything. We read it in the paper, we heard it on the radio or saw it on MTV and such. The world just was a lot slower. News traveled so slow. Today we know everything. We've seen it all ... it is just an endless repetitive datastream bringing us nothing new. We long to see something real; something really new. But bits and bytes cover everything in a millisecond. Books, movies, shows, music, news, shopping, sharing pictures ... an endless ocean of 0 and 1 that makes just no difference. It like at the end of The Truman-Show: The last episodes has ended ... what's next? And I work in software development and grew up in the 80s ...
A song showing 'absolute respect'. Utterly timeless. Unfortunately you'll never hear another song written or sung quite like this. Just enjoy it. They really were the good days.
As it is not about a single person, it is ment to be bigger from the start: 'Nightsift' doesn't mean work at all. You are on 'nightsift' when you have dead, but to others you are only on the regular nightsift, not dead.
My precious dad received his Angel Wings back in October 2018 due to cancer he is now pain free and dancing on the Night Shift but he is missed dearly here on earth. 🙏😢❤️
Amen to that.. I lost my oldest sister that dreaded disease last may... And I too pray she got her Angel Wings and is enjoying life on the night shift.....
this has to be the most emotionally charged and soulful song I've ever heard. I've been coming back to it for over 20 years, and I can never just listen once. It touches me so deeply and I can only thank the Commodores for giving us this timeless classic! I hope I can see them perform live someday!
This song was my dad favorite. I dedicate this song to him. He was taken from us 4 years ago. And for the ones we've lost in 2020. Peace to all! 🙏🏽Love you dad. 😢
Sorry about your loss:( I lost my father 23 years ago and my mother almost 4. Your father had great taste in music, because this song is one of the best ever.
My Dad loved this song, and he passed 2 weeks after the video dropped. So every time my mom's hear this, she cries. This is one of the most beautiful tribute songs ever, along with Diana Ross song "I'm Missing You".
ua-cam.com/video/FrkEDe6Ljqs/v-deo.htmlsi=u0zbkjxyM7NX3DE8 ❤🙏 this song makes me sad. I’m not even sure if it is related to the movie “Night Shift” but it came out at the exact same time. So I always assume it was written for that movie kind of like “Romancing the Stone” by Billy Ocean which wasn’t actually in the movie by the same name. Anyway, I have long since lost most of my family and I miss them terribly. This song reminds me of the only time I ever went to a movie alone with my dad. My dad owned a chain of movie theaters in the DC metropolitan area. When dad would do surprise inspections at his movie theaters on weekend nights I would beg to tag along. On really bust nights dad would get behind the concession stand and scoop popcorn or help out in any way he could. And I would do the same when permitted. On the night dad and I saw the movie “Night Shift” we were visiting one of his theaters that I only visited that one time. It was called Cinema 7 in Crystal City (where the Pentagon is located right across from the Potomac River from the Lincoln Memorial on the Virginia side). I remember that night like it was yesterday. My dad was a very good man but very serious and didn’t speak much. I never doubted that he loved me with all of his heart but being the child of an immigrant family that had seen horror dad was reared in such a way as to not show emotion. It was a defense mechanism that my ancestors had been forced to develop that enabled them to survive atrocities the likes of which those of us in the west will never have to endure (unless we re-elect Trump). On the night that dad and I ended up seeing this movie I had assumed that we were just going to drive around from movie theater to movie theater checking on things. But this night was like no other. It’s possible that dad wanted to see the movie in order to predict how well it was going to do in order to strategize how many copies he wanted to lease or how to negotiate his terms with the production company. OR, maybe dad had another idea in mind. Cinema 7 was notoriously dad’s least crowded movie theater and presumably only existed because dad happened to also own the building it was in. I can’t be positive but I want to believe that dad chose for us to visit Cinema 7 on that one special evening so that we could enjoy our company together without distraction. Dad knew practically everyone in Washington DC. Had we gone to a theater in the District or in the crowded Maryland suburbs dad would have been besieged by people he knew wanting to shake hands and/or making small talk. I’d like to think that dad purposely took me to Cinema 7, a city that no native Washingtonians would ever visit as it was essentially known only for being a bottleneck for traffic exiting DC over the Key Street bridge. At the time that we saw this movie Crystal City was the site of a few apartment buildings and maybe a few restaurants. It was a stretch to even call it a “city.” The ONLY people who would purposely go to a theater in Crystal City would be workers from the Pentagon or government employees living in one of the several apartment buildings as there was absolutely nowhere to park and no subway access at the time. I remember loving the movie and my dad holding my hand the entire time. And I remembered dad seeming “less worried” that night. Dad was a tortured soul. Something that only he knew tormented him throughout his entire life. Dad was incredibly moral so i can only assume that he felt tremendous guilt for being alive. I know this sounds odd if stated in a vacuum, but “survivor guilt” is real and can be as paralyzing to some connected to a tragedy as the very victims of that sane tragedy. Dad and I watched the movie and then we went and had pizza together - just us. And on that one night dad didn’t rush. We even talked. I don’t remember what we talked about but it was light hearted and probably observational. In other words, we were moving our lips but not listening to the substance of what the other was saying. We were simply communicating our love for one another via random waveforms. The substance of this moment was not in the dialogue but in the physical waveforms we were creating with our larynx. The love was encrypted into the core of the tone of the seemingly meaningless sounds separate and distinguishable from any meaning derived from them through the lens of a human dialect. I miss my dad. Dad suffered to ensure that I never did. All I see around me are horrible parents. These parents shower their children with insincere platitudes. But the kids are nothing more than accessories in the lives of yuppies who must have everything. I chose early in life to never bring a child into this cruel world because I don’t have anywhere near the strength or emotional intelligence to raise a child as perfectly and as lovingly as my father and mother did theirs.
Listen im telling.. you.. if you catch your mom listening to this song and she smiles then you know the mourning is over.. and then the good memories will be in her head!! God bless 😊
As powerful a tribute in September of 2023 as it was back in the day. Still brings a lump to the throat, a tear to the eye and MAD respect to the heart.

This makes me miss my childhood in the 80s. My Dad would blast this in his Camero. I wish my parents were still here listening to this with me ❤ (R.I.P). Cheers to the past ❤
@@vingiurleo4548bless your heart. The song itself is a double entendre for them having ‘worked’ (lived) with the rest of us during the ‘dayshift’ (alive) and have passed and now working’ the ‘nightshift’ (after-life).
My sister passed away also. I am 14 yrs younger than her. 43 yrs old she passed. I'm now 44.......we listened to this song together. Now I remember her by listening to it. Glad to know someone else shares a similar memory. May they both Rest In Peace.
My Dad passed 2 weeks ago. My younger brother told me to play this song once he had passed but I didn't know the title. I know most of his old school favourites. I was woken up at 3.20am this morning with this song in my head not knowing the lyrics or the song title. I got up and had to find the song so I could play it. Here I am, I've found your song dad. The only song I didn't know. Thank you for coming to me & for showing me this. You woke me up to play your song since I missed it! I love you ❤
Hi Karina, I'm so sorry about your Dad passing. Last night this song came into my mind and I didn't know the title or artist too! I texted an audio of my voice humming the tune to my brother and he knew it. I bought the song today! After reading your comment, I'm thinking of it as a message from my estranged biological father in Heaven. May your Heart continue to hold onto the bond of Love....that never breaks..Amen! Blessings upon your heart & mind....Love lighting the way through music. Huggy♡
It’s one of those songs that once you realise what the lyrics are about, it resonates deep within the heart and can be applied to any of our lost loved ones. So yes, I bawl like a baby every time I hear it.
"Nightshift" is a 1985 song by the Commodores and the title track from their eleventh album of the same name. The song was written by lead singer Walter Orange in collaboration with Dennis Lambert and Franne Golde, as a tribute to soul/R&B singers Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, both of whom died in 1984. The first verse mentions Gaye's song "What's Going On", while the second verse mentions Jackie Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops", ("Say you will")
It also mentions 2 other Jackie Wilson tunes. 1) “It seems like yesterday when we were WORKING OUT” (refers to Baby, Work Out -1963 ) and 29 “Jackie, you set the world on fire. You came and gifted us, your love it lifted us HIGHER AND HIGHER” (from Higher and Higher - 1967)
Kudos to the Commodores for a wonderful, refreshing and beautiful song. This is a work of art, performed by a class group of real professionals. And respected by an 80 year old who's still lost in the 60's. Good job guys.
We have the lyrics, they have been with us for a long time, and thanks to these fantastic guys. Jerome they will always be with us, maybe we will meet on the nightshift, hopefully...All to all ...
Nah, your old crusty ass just refuses to listen to music. instead you are complicit with calling whats played on the radio as the only music of "today" if you want better music, look for it. its out there.
I'm here in Boston and I concur . I miss the days when music made sense . it mattered so much.. I was pretty young when the song came out but loved it back then still love it today it's such a smooth flowing awesome hit
Somewhere up above Marvin & Jackie are still smiling 30 years later at this fantastic tribute song in their honor. Like the way Walter hands over the mic to J.D. Nicholas. Sort of like a vocal relay. He just kills it on that 2nd verse intro too. "Jackie hmmm, hey what you doin' now." Sweet sounds indeed
A huge thank you to both my parents for making me fall in love with Lionel Richie and/or the Commodores. Music like this will never be made again which is why it's so important to keep passing it on to the next generation!
I am 68 and I was young when this came out. This is one of my favorite songs for many years. I bet she is up there dancing and singing with Marvin and Jackie etc. and having a great time. I truly believe this son. God bless.
Reminds me if my dad (R.I.P) playing this in his Camero Traveling over the San Pedro bridge at night over looking the whole Long Beach docks and Naval Base in the 80s. R.I P to our parents we had an awesome memorable childhood.
I still listen to the same music I did back in the last 45 years. Today is my 73rd birthday. I am now listening to Night Shift. And singing.
Its Heavy and holy!!! Cheers to you Susan
and keep singing! forever more
A belated happy birthday!!

The song praises them for their roles in bringing joy and healing to people during difficult times, as referenced in the lines, "You found another home, I know you're not alone, on the nightshift."
The Commodores use the song to bridge a sense of loss with a sense of hope.

There's definitely no substitute for quality ❤❤❤❤
Lionel Richie became a pompous ass guy. he thought he was more important than his old band just ; because he sold millions of albums if it wasn't for the commodores he wouldn't be successful
@danielholden7720Which shows you how much they needed him
There was friction between the Commodores and Lionel Richie as his role in the band drew increasing levels of attention.

The sound of the 80’s was predominantly positive vibes underpinned by some talented pop crafting ❤it

listening to this song and other oldies makes me realize there was a time when life was not depressing and people genuinely enjoyed being alive. thanks to whoever recorded this i get to go back in time and have a taste of good music.
I totally agree, I know this is a bit later than the 60's but that is when I grew up. I've posted this before but I'm in ovetime in this game of "life" so if only I could find a time machine to take me back and leave me there with the music.
Thelma, kkkkkkiaaa....please....people enjoyed being alive...a bit strong but true...now we are more like robotic...beens. Thanks...
Yes Thelma, you nailed it.
If you think the 80s weren't depressing in their own unique way, I have some bad news for you . . .

❤🙏 this song makes me sad.
As the Commodores would say your father is on the Nightshift. And it's gonna be alright.
Listen im telling.. you.. if you catch your mom listening to this song and she smiles then you know the mourning is over.. and then the good memories will be in her head!! God bless 😊

The first verse mentions Gaye's song "What's Going On", while the second verse mentions Jackie Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops", ("Say you will")
and “Higher and Higher”
Nice cover from Bruce Springsteen
@@utube4661 I just listened to it and thought it blowed chunks.

+Shane Anthony agree with you 100%
so true
+Shane Anthony It's pure genius. Gives me chills when he does that and the sweet harmonies at the end too. Such talent!
inspirational people, good song,a song with meaning...
+Shane Anthony Great song, but that 2. verse intro....oh my....its so freaking good...
A huge thank you to both my parents for making me fall in love with Lionel Richie and/or the Commodores. Music like this will never be made again which is why it's so important to keep passing it on to the next generation!
This song reminds me of my mom, who is no longer here. This was one of her favorite songs. She absolutely loved this song
I feel you bro..... May her soul rest with the angels
I am sorry for your loss. My mom passed just 9 days ago. God rest their souls
So Sorry For Your Loss Michael :(
