  • Hair care habits/routine that I formed during my 20s that made my hair long, strong, shiny and healthy!)
► Habits I formed in my 20s series playlist! • HABITS I FORMED IN MY ...
► Discussed in the video (how to grow long, healthy, strong, shiny hair!):
-how the world is burning and how lovely it is to talk about something so unimportant for a change hahaha
    -chopping off all damaged hair
-how, when you do this and look after your hair, you DON'T need to constantly
    get trims
-knowing your hair dye and finding a system that works for you! I am super sensitive to most hair dyes and have always dealt with stinging on my scalp with PPD formulas...I now exclusively use Wella Koleston Perfect with Me+ because of the reduced risk of allergy. I did work with them on a campaign about a year or two ago however now I'm a paying customer and I still want to sing about it from the rooftops!
    -having a go-to hairdresser
-wellaplex and olaplaex treatments (if using dye) as they repair and prevent hair damage
-avoid overwashing hair because the natural oils are so beneficial,
    and playing with hairstyles
    -scalp massage
    -regular use of hair masks
-moroccan oil, rich in minerals vitamins antioxidants etc
-I stick with quality products that work with my hair type
    -wide-toothed brushes and combs
    -cut down on heat styling
-I stick to GHD because they don't get TOO hot and have heat sensors etc
-heat protection spray IF you can remember lol
    -good quality hair ties

I rotate leave-in products regularly since my hair seems to adjust to them and they don't always work as well over time (even with clarifying). I also try to use them so I can let my hair dry naturally without heat. Also, silicone-free shampoo is best for my oily hair 💙

My number one hair tip is to whack on a good hair oil to the tips of your hair to prohibit breakage (I prefer coconut oil cheap cheerful and smells amazing 🥰🥰) and a good hair mask once a week I really enjoy herbal essences Kew Gardens range (might only be available in the UK). Mel you are looking so well and I hope wedding planning is causing you too much stress #longtimefollower 💚💚

I use hair oil (morrocan oil) as it just prevents my natural hair from looking too frizzy as I don't like using heat on it just to go to work.

Leaving my conditioner on for about 5 minutes has made such a difference, also in the summer if I'm sunbathing I mix lemon juice with coconut oil which naturally lightens my hair without damaging it. X

I leave a hair mask on at least once a week so it goes smooth and silky. Also prefer to use a sulfate free shampoo as my hair is naturally curly 💚

IVE BEEN DOING HAIR CARE FOREVER BECAUSE MY HAIR IS MY LIFEEEEEE, HERE IS MY TIPS::
    - Take supplements/vitamins. Big ones are (BIOTIN, omega-3's, zinc, silica).
    - Get a blood test to see if you are low in iron (low iron leads to hair fall/loss). If so, ask a doctor for the recommended dosage.
    - EAT HEALTHY!! (fruits, nuts, fish, eggs, dark leafy greens, seeds).
-Invest in a silk nightcap/bonnet/pillowcase to avoid breakage during the night.
    - Stay hydrated!
    - Stick to a consistent hair wash routine. If you don't wash hair for weeks, follicles may get clogged and start to grow thinner hairs. Don’t over-wash your hair either because it will cause brittle, dry hair prone to breakage!
    - Get a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. (Function of Beauty, Calia Shampoo)
    - SCALP MASSAGES!!! (this stimulates blood flow to follicles which promotes hair growth)
    -Reduce stress.
    -Workout.
-Selfcare days (do hair masks, scalp treatments, rinses)!
-I love apple cider vinegar rinses because it makes your hair smooth and luscious!
    - Try to avoid heat.
    - Be as gentle as possible when combing and brushing your hair. (If u think you’re going gentle, go gentler!)
-Take collagen supplements (ask a doctor before). This has helped me a great deal.
-Avoid tight hairstyles or hair extensions that will stress the root of your hair!
This has worked for my journey. I do my best to take care of my hair. I do all these things to maintain my thick hair!!❤️I hope it helps. :)

Hi I don't know if you will read this but since you mentioned follicles get clogged if we are not consistent with washing, I wanna know if there is anything that can unclog it? I don't wash my hair that often and my hair strands are definitely becoming thinner...what can I do to improve this? Is it possible to undo the damage and get thicker hair?

Lilly Mathews hii girl! i have heard that scalp exfoliation helps. before you shower take a tooth brush and part your hair around ur head and scrub where your scalp is exposed. You can also invest in scalp treatments and scalp massages to promote blood flow. Try to stick to a consistent hair wash routine 🥰hope this helped

Hair care tip: mine would honestly be, learn that everyone’s different, and embrace what you have. Just because you may want a certain hairstyle/colour it may not suit your hair type, you face shape etc etc. Learn what works for you and your hair, and love yourself embrace all that is you.

Truth!! For instance Melanie’s hair is so naturally full and thick (colour i dunno), yeah i wish i had her hair obviously, but mine will never be as full and thick as hers, my hair is kinda inbetween thick and thin, and breaks off easily. Imma have to find a way to live with that lol

I've got long & thin Indian black hair, and I generally have a safe than sorry approach to hair care:
    - Always wear scarves while being out in the sun because both skin and hair must be cared for from sun damage.
    - Make homemade egg masks and combine them with different oils (I like coconut and argan the most!) and wear them for 2-3 hours before shampooing my hair (I do it every time I shampoo since I have really dry hair)
    - Wash my hair twice a week to avoid any dirt or dandruff buildup
    - Tie my hair up if I'm exposed to the wind (Though I have cheat days where I listen to music and let my hair fly all around the place to feel like I'm in a movie)
    - Keep the styling to the minimum and blow drier at a safe distance to minimize the heat proximity when I do
    - Use a wooden comb since it NEVER tangles my hair up
    - I try not to touch my hair too much since I believe hair and skin is best left alone once you've done your part in taking care of them.
    - MEDITATION ! Since I take a lot of unnecessary stress, I always notice a directly proportional connection to hair fall, a week or two after my stress day. Which led me to start a routine where I try to calm myself down, if not for the sake of sanity, at least for gorgeous locks!
    - Regular exercise (Even if it's just running behind your dog to pry things out of his mouth!)
    - Plenty of FISH and plenty of those annoying greens (Yes, I count even the subway ones)
    - And like you mentioned in the video @melanie, I try to massage my roots everyday before I go to sleep, even if its for a minute or two
Since I have genetically thin hair, I try to go all out on taking care of the hair I have. Since there's NO POINT complaining about genes, about which you can do absolutely nothing about! Trying to make the best out of the one I'm born with and getting 1% better at it, everyday (I hope!)

My hair tips: let your hair down when you can, don't let it sit tight in a ponytail for too long ; make sure you use good shampoo that won't dry it out; use a mask as a conditioner every time you wash your hair but don't put it too close to your scalp so that your hair stays lightweight and cleaner for longer; put hairspray form very far away so that your hair doesn't get crunchy 💖💚

Love this! I would also like to see a social habits I formed in my 20s, maybe how to make and keep friends as an adult? Also, I have a number of hair care tips I live by, that are especially important for curly hair:
MY VERY BEST TIP: cut out silicones. They coat the hair and prevent any vitamins or moisture from reaching the hair cuticle. However, they do make the hair shiny and give the appearance of health, but cutting them out means your hair will genuinely get much healthier and shinier over time.
Other good things to do are cut out sulfates (they are only really needed to wash out silicones and are incredibly drying), stop using normal bath towels as this causes breakage and frizz and swap for a microfibre towel or cotton tshirt instead, and use a silk pillowcase for the same reason!

yeah sure but with oily hair the more you wash it the oilier it gets. just like skin. humans were not meant to apply surfactants to their skin and hair this many times a week. in the olden days ppl washed their hair maybe once a month and only with water or sea water if they lived near the coastline and ppl grew longer healthier hair.

Hey! ***SILICONES*** just want everyone commenting about them to know: I really don't have any issue with using them, they've never done my hair any harm and there's so much scare-mongering online (it's the same with skincare ingredients tbh!) - they fight frizz, are great for styling, all classes of silicones show no comedogenicity (they don't increase the number of blackheads and acne) so 'they cause acne' is a myth, they're derived from quartz which is ABUNDANT on earth so they're totally sustainable (great post about silicones here by Caroline Hirons: www.carolinehirons.com/2019/08/beauty-myths-no-21-silicones-ad.html for more info)...but yeah, I've tried avoiding them in the past and alternative products present their own issues and usually don't work as well for me

Haircare tip: use less heat, such as a curling iron or a straightener. And when using heat, always use a heat protectant. Don’t leave it in a bun/ponytail too often and let it dry completely after washing before making a bun/ponytail - otherwise your scalp is a perfect place for microbes to live and grow, which can make your scalp itchy, dry and flaky. Use a small amount of hair oil (my favorite is bio silk silk therapy) to make it shinier, softer and less frizzy :D

  • @Elywwx
    @Elywwx 4 роки тому +19

haircare tip: the reason heat styling works isn't because of the heating process, but the cooling down process! To get the most out of the heat you do use on your hair, take advantage of that cool down by holding your curls up, or pinning them as they cool, and don't run your hands through them until the end. This way you won't need to style your hair as often, or use as much heat, since the results will be better and last longer

I’m absolutely living for this series! As someone in my early twenties, you’ve revolutionised how I treat my skin and hair!
Probably my best haircare tip would be, when you’re thinking about a big change (a new colour, style, a fringe etc) just do it! Hair will grow back, you can colour it different and in the long run you’ll be glad you tried! I always wanted a full fringe and everyone told me it wouldn’t suit my face and I’d hate it. Eventually I acted on impulse and had one cut one day and I ended up loving it so much I kept it for a year, grew it out for a change then had it re-cut the following year! There will be times you hate your hair and times you love it, no matter what colour or style it’s in. So just go for it and make the change. You’ll be glad you tried and you won’t spend your days wondering what it would have been like if you had changed your hair up 🥰🥰

After years of experimenting, my number 1 hair tip is cowashing!
I wash my hair with shampoo once a week and midway between washes I’ll wash with just a conditioner. It makes my hair so shiny but not oily, and is the best thing I’ve found that helps tame my frizz into more defined waves/ curls 😊

  • @sunnyDee_

A childhood hair care tip: nEVER let your mam do your hair if she’s mad at you, you’ll have no roots.
I would say don’t take hot showers but I would be a massive hypocrite so I’ll just say be careful after your hell shower. Don’t put your hair into a Marge Simpson wrap, the hair will break and you’ll get onset alopecia (balding basically)
Just be gentle with your hair, it goes through a lot and we should be kind to it ☀️

You're like a bigger sister from the internet. Your videos have a different feel from other youtubers, maybe bc you're not American, I don't know, but everything feels so "homely" and relaxing in your videos, like they're a safe space where you teach us to get our lives together lol.
My tips (from a dark blonde, quite oily scalp, former Rapunzel- had to give it a chop bc of hairloss, now I'm growing it back)
    - use cool water when washing your hair, gives them shine, stimulates circulation, and prevents hairloss
    - experiment with products, no one's hair is the same and different products work on different people. Growing up my holy grail was Ultra Sweet by Garnier but now I switched it to Head & Shoulders. I'm using the Pantene shampoo from the Hair Biology line rn and it's amazing; my current fav conditioner is the Elvive Dream Long Rapid Reviver.
    - USE OILS. Game changer. Jojoba and linen are pretty good, coconut is even better, but neem is the king for me. Coat your hair in oil at least a couple hours before washing and your hair will look like you've been to the salon (especially if you use neem). Put a little bit of oil on the ends or in the roots for moisture during the week (I use linen for ends and neem for roots)
    - wear loose braids while sleeping (I wear a pony or no hairstyle at all but I know it's no good ples don't do like I do, do as I say)
    - as Mel said, don't wash your hair too often. I wash them once a week and I'm fine with that.
    - stay away from heat and dyes (sorry Mel)
    - don't overdo overnight waves/curls if they tug too much on the roots (I deeply regret it).
    XO's from Italy

Best haircare tip: I've been trying to get my hair back to the length I used to have it and I've found not using heat so beneficial. I never blow-dry my hair unless I need to leave the house(having sopping wet hair when you're out and about is not fun) and most of the time I put my hair in a braid before bed so it's all lovely and wavy the next morning. Dear Melanie, I never comment on videos, but I had to write you a wee message to say thank you! For the past couple of months I'd woken up everyday and just hated my hair. I've never really heat-styled and have only really dyed my hair with henna, so couldn't understand why it was just getting progressively more and more dry and damage. On the same day I was contemplating just chopping it all off and starting again, your video popped up in my subscription box. Thanks so much for this video! I just recently found your channel and I'm loving everything you do! :)
One hair care tip I love doing is to NOT use a towel at all! Wrap your clean, wet hair up in a regular tshirt, (wrap just like you would wrap using a towel) leave the tshirt on for 30min to 1 hour. Once you take it off your hair will be WAY more dry than a towel gets it and the tshirt takes away any frizz, leaving you with soft, smooth hair that you can finish air drying or blow dry in literally just a few min!
Since I started doing this my hair almost never has frizz, it's much softer, smoother and shiny, it's straight without needing a flat iron and I now have way less shedding!
Thank so much for all your tips and tricks♡♡

I find shampoo really strips my hair of its oil and causes it to be much dryer, which in turn makes my hair oily at the roots and dry at the ends. Try limiting using shampoo when washing and only use it if you've got product build up in your hair. Hope this helps somebody as much as it's helped me! Much love ❤

I have 2b/2c hair and what really helped me was the following:
    - Keratin spray by Fantasia (it has dimethicone in it so if you're doing the CG method this isn't for you)
    - Washing my hair once or twice a week
    - Only using sulfate free shampoo (I like ORS Curls Unleashed)
    - Only using the medium and low heat settings on the blow dryer
    - Cowashing instead of using shampoo in between washes (I use the L'Oréal Paris Elvive Low Shampoo)
    - A deep conditioning treatment once a week
    - Using a microfiber towel (they're pretty cheap when you buy them at sports supplies stores, swimmers use them too)
    - Scalp massaging once a month (I mix castor oil with argan oil, massage it in for about ten minutes, leave it in overnight and then wash my hair in the morning. Works even better when I use a homemade scalp scrub.)
    - Buying a good pair of scissors to cut off split ends about once a month
    - Knot Today leave in conditioner by Kinky Curly!
    - Scrunchies!!!

It took me soooo many years to find the best hair care routine for my curly hair (and it’s still always changing) but for all my other curlies out there, the CGM (curly girl method) is a great place to start. Knowing your hair porosity is super helpful, as well as maintaining a balance between protein and deep conditioning treatments. Do a product “elimination diet” if you can’t figure out what’s going on with your hair all of a sudden. There’s a lot of good information out there, just takes some time to find it all!

That way, when buying things you can keep an eye out for the products that have the good stuff and the products to avoid. Some hair care tips I have are to use an oil for your ends! The oil you showed in the video is great! I personally use the Big Sexy Hair Love Oil. It helps so much. I will also use a heat protectant product for when I do use hot tools.
Don't wash your hair every day... This one is actually new to me because I naturally have very oily hair.
Use high quality products. I know it's convenient to just get the inexpensive products but you're doing your hair a disservice. If you have or feel like you have build up wash twice then condition.
Don't always use purple or blue shampoo if you have blonde hair... Dries out your hair faster than you can imagine. Use it like 1x per week or as needed.
Eat healthy. It's not just for your health but for your beauty. Healthy is sexy.
That's all I can think of... I know there is some overlap but still good things.

Ok so I've had some high maintenance hair. Full platinum, full copper red, and the tips I would add to your awesome video are; investing in silk pillowcases. This is pricy but a great investment especially if you have highly processed hair. Second, being very careful with towels out of the shower. Specifically, not drying harshly with the towel, and not using a turban style with it, as that pulls on your delicate baby hairs and is unnecessary. I also have a specific hair towel thats microfiber but I think the most important is towel drying very gently and not doing a turban ❤❤❤

I lost a lot of hair when I first had my liver disease and it was so thin and frustrating so I just decided to chop it off and start new. I'm trying not to dye my hair for at least a year, I wash my hair about twice a week to let the natural oil in my hair help me out 😊 Taking biotin is also really helpful for my hair and my nails, but nothing beats eating those healthy fats! I honestly don't know if it is the best tip I could give but, I have been in a quest for the perfect shampoo for my hair type for a little while now, finally found it and it makes such a difference. I feel like it makes a world of a difference when a shampoo lives your hair felling silky and shinny versus one that lives you with a feeling of residue or living your hair dull.
