@BabyDollyRandM damnit "always"
Talking about blizzard
Real
I always, always love the fully intended symbolism during Balderich's last stand. Reinhardt gives him his hammer, his only means of attack, to honor his conviction to Balderich's final request to be the team's shield. Balderich accepts, knowing that defense is pointless, since he is already going to die. Balderich tells Reinhardt to "Live with honor", giving him his blessing going forward in life. Reinhardt replies to "Die with glory", knowing he will never see Balderich again. It's the perfect unspoken implication that makes this scene so powerful.
Also Balderich's shield was destroyed in saving Reinhardt. There was no other way, he was dying, shieldless, and there was no time.
And that is why I always appreciate people who play games not just for the fun and excitement it gives, but rather also for the symbolic meaning and message it conveys behind
It really was perfect
By giving over his weapon, Reinhardt signed over to the old warrior code - protect those who cannot protect themselves. It was an honourable (albeit dangerous) move to stand in harms way to save others knowing that you yourself cannot fight back.
@@ehanboshoff4825 I mean, I'm guessing getting punched by his fist would hurt quite a bit, so he wasn't completely defenseless.

The subtlety of Reinhardt offering Balderich his hammer isn't lost on me; He was told to be the Shield so he hands over his weapon. Sure, it's to give Balderich an edge in his final stand, but the symbology is strong. He hands over his tool to be a gloryhog, and that's why Balderich's face lights up when Reinhardt offers him his hammer, not because it'll give him an edge in a losing battle, but because Reinhardt took his words to heart and actually heeds them.
Nunca había pensado en eso!
Great observation
nahh you watched the same video as everyone else?????
Well also reminds me when he said that they shall fight their way together. In a way, he is fighting with Balderich through his weapon while he acts as the shield for the team.

Same man, watching this again made me almost cry again. REIN MAIN 4 EVER !!!!
This is a really harsh reminder, rewatching this so many years later, that the Blizzard that used to create premium, industry leading content, the one we once knew and loved is dead and buried.
That opening scene where Brig reminds Rein that OW abandoned him hits different now
Reinhardt in game: "HAHA funny old German dude"
Reinhardt in backstory: **A man horribly scarred by Battle, losing his mentor and best friend at a Young age, paid with an eye for his mistakes**
The prices we pay for knowledge and wisdom.
He reminds me a lot of the Heavy from TF2 actually. In lore he's very chill and sedated. It's only until he goes into battle is he the hollering, energetic warrior who lives for the fight that we know!
@@krazyjay9919 yee
he paid with both an eye and a friend for his mistake
The eye meant almost nothing to him. He was still pretty cavalier even after that got taken out. But losing his mentor, hit really hard and gave him a debt that he now feels he can't repay.
When he says "I must answer...always" sends CHILLS seeing that he's basically sworn on his old friend's grave that he would live someone else's life in Overwatch
Not someone else life, hes gonna live the oath he swored to do wich is "live with honor die in glory " just like his comander and the life of a crusader
"live with honor, Die with glory" such a simple line.
Reinhart mad an oath. He glory hogged and while he protected the LAND of Germany. He let it's heart bleed claiming they only slowed him down. To learn the lesson he had to commit the worst dishonor. To lose a battle they could have survived, cost a mentor his life, eat massive casualties, and lose out on true glory for a vain understanding of glory.
He regained his honor when he held the line, when he made sure not another wound was struck on the heart, and lent his weapon to a dying comrade to defend the land. After that he served in that mans place to protect the worlds heart and soul. He wasn't "pushed out" his call was simply ended, and while it may hurt, he had other duties. Yet now, with the heart and mind ailing, with new enemies and new threats, he has been called....and he must answer always. Live with honor, die with glory.
Such power in such a simple line, Overwatch used to have such amazing writing.
Also it’s not hard to imagine that he knows that he has to in hopes of protecting others and serving a cause to help protect the world

i think that's already in the game, or at least it's similar
Reinhardt in this cinematic: protects team against 10 bastions
Reinhardt in the game after facing one bastion for 4 seconds: The shield won't hold forever !
Playing reinhardt I'm comp is like have a duck for a shield against bastion
Well it didn’t last much longer here, he just used his body as a shield when it failed.
@@Stormkrow280 And it was in slow motion, I think his shield just lasted 1 second
5:50 is more accurate if you remove slow mo,
The one you saw was Balderich who was probably stronger than reinhardt
Well if you look at the cinematics, no one is as strong as they actually are in the game. They have to balance it. Like in the short, he one shots a bastion. In D.Va’s short, she shreds some robots in seconds, while in the game her bullets are like nerf darts. It’s for balancing in game
One day, Reinhardt will be buffed back to relevance.
When that day comes... We will no longer just die with glory... But live with honour once more.
One of the coolest things about this cinematic is the moment he hands over his hammer. He isn't just giving Balderich a cooler battle or a better fighting chance, he's giving up his desire to fight. He used it as a way to nonverbally tell Balderich that he would do everything to protect his team while Balderich was gone. He left himself with nothing but his shield to prove it.
Old Reinhardt's voice actor needs a raise. Those 8 words are spoken with more emotional conveyance than I've ever heard before.

I have watched this cinematic like 10 times, and still cry T_T
The thing I love most about this cinematic is how powerful the actual moment is. Sure, robots fighting, massive metal men battling against impossible odds, amazingly cool. But when he sacrificed himself for Reinhardt he didn't just save him. He saved every single person Reinhardt would go on to save for decades after. He MADE Reinhardt who he is. That moment, that lesson, it created a hero who changed the entire world. Now that's a sacrifice.

I think the Bastion series of omnics still had some semblance of emotion, even during the omnic crisis. At 2:17, if you pause at the right moment, you will see the Bastion shield itself using its arms (something none of the other Bastions did, as this one’s movements were far too human compared to the others), and the one next to it looks at its friend, then Reinhardt. Neat.

In game: Goofy characters who talk too much.
In cinematic: Depressed war veterans.
EDIT: When I'm talking about in game, I mean like when they're actually fighting. Brazil gets invaded, and you get quips like "Nice vacation spot!" I understand appearing aloof in certain situations, but they're aloof like 90% of the time. Like they're on some family picnic. Imagine if Reindhardt starts making a number of jokes while protecting his unit from bullets.
Im14andthisisdeep
Wow, im 14 and i gotta say this is deep
That's how it is in real life too
a lot of the automatic voice lines between characters are serious ones alluding to their past
Combat gets you high. This ain't a joke either, adrenaline highs from combat are a thing.
God there's so much to see in this cinematic and it makes me ugly cry every time.
In the very beginning when he's talking with Brig you can see how much she reminds him of himself in his younger days. Her obsession with it not being "His responsibility" and that he was "Pushed Out", and it sends him back. Reminding him of his own thoughts back then. That Balderich was abandoning the true fight. You get to see Reinheardt's hubris and drive for glory throughout all of the first scene, when the attack is announced his reaction is just excitement to kill, and you can see by his squadmates reactions that they know they're gonna be on their own.
"They're just slowing me down." while he blazes a trail through robot forces, culminating in him 'calling' the OR-15. And this is where the tide turns, as he charges you get a "nigh-unstoppable force meets immovable object" moment. For the first time he can't just waltz through his enemies and despites his claims he DOES NOT have that. And so Balderich has to save him, which is the first moment we see a change in young Reinheardt's joking personality if only briefly. Fear, poorly masked as rage. As they retreat back to the castle you can see him stumble, he's not as smooth on his feet or as confident. He's scared deep down even if he doesn't show it. He's facing a foe he can't blaze through, something he's never encountered before. When Balderich makes his decision to fight and states Rein as the one to follow in his suite to join Project: OVERWATCH, his walls come crashing down around him. Despite his levity and brazen attitude, Rein doesn't consider himself comparable to Balderich.
But Balderich is clear, and knows his time has come. And as he restates his position, things began to make themselves clear to Rein. Despite presumably being able to escape, Balderich knows that he needs to buy time, he needs to be their shield. And he passes that message to Rein: "YOU took an Oath to be a Crusader. The team NEEDS you. Be their shield." And then Rein does something that Balderich doesn't expect, he hands him his hammer. Because he knows Balderich is right. He doesn't need it anymore, he understands now, he must be their shield. In that moment and shortly after when he provides cover for his remaining squad members he is willing, for arguably the first time, to lay down his life without the need for glory. And in doing that, finds it. One does not need to kill 100 enemies to be glorious, one needs to do something for a reason that does not benefit you.
This is why I am a Rein main, this is why I love this character. Live with Honour, Die with Glory.

Remember what overwatch had a living, breathing lore?
So as a Reinhardt main, it occurs to me that this video is basically every player picking up Rein. At first, you feel invincible, you charge in and go offensive without too much thought, as reinhardt can do a lot of damage. but then your team keeps dying. funny but not really accurate. since s4 and the popularity of the dive comp rein mains were so frustrated with dps mains running past them they were forced to main dva or Winston instead. rip deathballs
"after so many years of service you gave overwatch everything and then they pushed you out" hes just like me frfr
I like how Reinhardt's character arc in this vid is basically him learning how to play as Reinhardt, becoming less of a glory hound and more of a defensive team player.
Tell that to the idiot on our team that's charging into the enemy group
gunther mizuki he needs his teacher to die for him
As a rein main, charging is acceptable if your team is already scattered and a key enemy char is right in your sights, i.e. healer or bastion (or any enemy that is about to ult)
lol, whenever I play there's always a rein on the enemy team who just charges straight into every one and dies.
1st time watching: So that's Reinhardt's story, very interesting.
2nd time watching: So touching…this scene hits me so hard
3rd time watching: …why am I crying…
^ T H I S
For real tho why?
@@ThePhilosopherLB It's very heart breaking when I see how time passed, and Reinhardt is still blaming himself.
@@jellygb6146 or maybe it is just because we grew older/wiser than the 1st time we watched this
@@ThePhilosopherLB When you play enough of Overwatch you finally realize, in order to be a good Reinhart you need to have alot of restraint.
This actually almost made me cry
Same. It’s hard not to cry.
Now i see why he was so angry when bastion appeard

Rein: Uses shield against a full team of bastions.
1 second later: barrier fails.
It's like the realm game! Where ya shield melts in seconds
@@kurtisdeakin that's the point of my comment lol.
525 damage/s on sentry mode
Jimmy Nguyen jee
I wish the shield in the game could last that long like in the cinematic here lol
Overwatch came to us in 2016. Back when these first came out it was already clear they were something special. I watched these shorts come out in real time. However, it's only now, 8 years later, that I understand just how magic it was. I genuinely grieve this I.P., it was worth so much more than what Blizzard gave it
Honestly putting the energy off the fight aside this really explains reinhard in a nutshell. It doesnt matter his best days are behind him or that the ommnic war has ended. His duty is eternal to be the shield off his team. Not just a oath to an order but also a solom promise to a friend he lost. Its an honour to have been that shield for my team. Duty calls and we shall awnser
Oh I get it, so Reinhardt grew his moustache, so that it would resemble Balderich. A moustache in his memory. That's cool actually.
or i mean he just grew out his hair
That cool and massively depressing
+elijahproto But that wouldn't be that epic :I
In one of the earliest OW shorts, i think i remembered seeing Reinhardt protecting omnic civilians from being assaulted by their human counterparts.
That particular scene hit me pretty hard, the man who fights robots and loses his comrade by robots all his life; still holding his code of honour and justice by protecting the weak and the unwanted even though he is protecting the race that took everything from him
One of the best written character so far
most of if not all of the characters in this game are not written well lets not get too crazy
Well, i dont compare Rein story to another game characters though, i compare him to the rest of OW characters, while most of them is not that interesting, given their shorts lore is not published yet, i find for a mulitplayer game, OW characaters is written well enough to be both game fitted and generally character fit for a story.
Svhons don't mind him they are written pretty well for a multiplayer fps
how are they not well written? they fit into the lore perfectly. sure they fit the common superhero trope; tragedy, loss, a new found source of power...but I feel as if Blizzard has done an amazing job of creating these characters and keeping them uniform with the lore of overwatch.
I also challenge you to create a universe consisting of 26 main characters, complete with ages of history, comics, an accessible line of support and community feedback and still deliver high quality content like this. In 2 years.
I really hope you can elaborate on why you think they are written poorly, and I'd love to see a comparison of a well written character by your standards in a multiplayer fps. won't be able to sleep tonight if you don't. cmon bby
Rein sees a bigger picture. Its awesome.
"live with honor, die with glory"
I've seen this like 6 times but it always finds a way to make me cry
After watching it for the first time in a while, I cried too
so true
"Get back and protect your team!"
"Ah, they're just slowing me down! Besides, they're fine!"
Sounds like every Reinhardt on QP
yes. :D it sound's like ME!
That was definitely me before I saw this short last year.
*W H E R E I S R E I N H A R D T ? !*
*distant shout* "I NEED HEALING
Sounds like a lv 1500 bronze player
As much as this is heartwarming and a great short, I also love the sneaky Reinhardt tip Blizzard put in....... "PROTECT YOUR TEAM DAMNIT"
Emrad16 eh
But it kind of backfires, because his "team" is worthless and he carried.
THEY ARE JUST GOING TO SLOW ME DOWN
Carisma1005 lmaoo
TinyToasterMan DAMNIT REINHARDT
Rewatching this in 2024 to remind myself back when the game had soul. Even before pve was announced the story telling here was 10/10.
Wish Rein actually felt this way to play in game still.
It would be cool to add hammer uppercut to his kit
5 years old, and still tear up after "always" every time.
"The team needs you, be their shield."
And now I'm crying again.
Actual player:No
I'm more crying that he said "I have been called. I must answer." and then at the end, Reinhardt said "I have been called. I must answer. Always."
"The team needs you, be their shield" what every reinhardt has to understand
ruukiru j

Main*
That's literally all I do as Reinhardt.
Then everyone goes Bastion and mows my shield down.
i am not crying you are crying
they threw the game away this just makes me cry knowing the greatest storyline ever just died a few months ago
I love how Blizzard managed to make Overwatch more than just a game.
Avana It was originally a movie, then they just turned it into a game
Actually, it started out as a first-person shooter called "Titan," but they cancelled it in 2014. Then the team that worked on it took some of their ideas and worked it into Overwatch.
exept its just a game
a tf2 rippoff infact
A game with a story? Revolutionary!
