Apparently Paul Waller wound pickups for John’s 55 Strat after he came back to the band for Unlimited Love. any predictions as to when they release the affordable version? they will probably price it at around 2K- 2.5$, at least I hope the don't go above that
Gotta start calling this what it is… a 20k paint job. What is even the point if the pickups aren’t replicated? Just buy an actual player grade 62 Strat at that price point. Not that I could afford this in the first place, but hearing John wasn’t really involved makes it even less exciting. For 20k I’d want completely replicated pickups and have it signed by John at the bare minimum.
There are the 60s Vinteras second hand for 600€, besides the finish they have the same specs. Pickups is not important as the playability, the sound comes from that. The radius and the frets are the same on both Vintera and a 62.
His guitar has a 3-way switch and not a 5-way. Not sure about the 7.25 radius neck. Read from his former guitar tech Dave Lee they changed the radius to 9..
And narrow tall frets (6105) (which are not that narrow) is another thing, since JF was so against jumbo fretwire in the early 90's, maybe he changed his mind
@Evy-1988 This is from an interview he gave in the 90s “... Man you gotta get new frets.” And he put on these huge frets. Jumbos. Which were like shit. So wimpy. When I play, I press down hard on the strings. And when I did that with the jumbos, it didn’t even sound in tune. So I just told him to make it fretless." John Frusciante, Guitar World. November 1991
Abigail retired some time ago, (though coming back to do small runs, fender also have many sets of her NOS pickups under lock and key.) so id say these are definitely just random 60s style custom shop pickups, which like you said, SUCKS for 20k lol. To fit with the rest of the guitar, this should have pickups replicating john's originals/whatever are in there.
You should watch my follow up video because I talk about the pickups and what is actually confirmed to be going on. And idk why you reposted your comment lol.
@@blakebeamer i dont think the reason is known, but id assume warping/cracking as you can see it cracked along the neck pickup typical screw spot in early pics right before its swapped out, sometimes it causes weird resonance issues with the neck pickup, people refer to it as 'stratitus' with old strats lol
@Evy-1988 he changed it again at some point, (you may be right with around 2004-5) I believe the difference is that the screw hole changes to the USA standard spec, before he had a 62 accurate spec guard on it (still a Repro, replacing the original)
For the price you can get a nice custom-shop Stratocaster and a high end amp with boutique pedals. Heck add few thousands and you can get a “real” vintage strat. 😅😅.
I get it buying the original guitar as a piece of history and putting it in a museum. But buying signature models, artificially "relicad" is just ridiculous... People strive to buy that which has no price: talent and hardwork.
John's 62 Strat had Seymour Duncun SSL1's when he got it. He used those pick ups from Californication up until recently rejoined the band... After stadium arcadium he was playing guitars with humbuckers more on his solo stuff, and when he rejoined the band he put some kinda higher output single coils in his strat.
Why tf would anyone buy this? 1) wanting the specific wear and tear that's on John's strat is insane and obsessive. 2) even if I did understand valuing someone else's guitat, this isn't even his guitar! It's a replica.
Unteresting that they're supplying a Callaham Trem. block ...I personally hate the amount of slop in the Trem arm(I have tried utilizing the shitty little spring, and it doesn't fix the problem.) ...I have a Callaham Virtual Drop in bar along with the Callaham Trem block ...problem solved!
I'm pretty sure Mrs. Ybarra retired from Fender years ago. These might just be old leftover stock pickups just to drive the price up? There is nothing that special about Frusciante's strat electronics-wise, it is just your standard '60s strat. Add the SSL-1 and standard Fender pickups mentioned a few times in some Dave Lee interviews and it becomes even more bland. Don't get me wrong, I love Frusciante and his tone and would love to have this guitar in my hands, but it is more about the visuals. Slap the same relic pattern on a road-worn strat and it will still sell out, but not for 20k. These pickups and Frusciante's name are the only things keeping this price alive, remove those and there is no doctor/lawyer crazy enough to pay that much money for a masterbuilt '60s strat.
Didn’t Hohn say he’s not into a signature guitar 🎸? Like felt it wasn’t his thing or am I mistaken. Doesn’t seem to be a guy into all that stuff. The 20k price is outrageous like that can’t be used to a down payment on a home lol😂
Oof. I've already had a problem swallowing the fact that people will pay over $1k for a guitar that gets "professionally" beaten to shit to make it look old... it feels inauthentic and fake to me. Then, the next tier that is even harder for me to swallow is people paying even MORE money to get a guitar beaten to shit to LOOK like someone ELSE'S guitar... And then, this?? Man, I'm a HUGE Frusciante fan. LOVE his work in the Chilis. And while I would never get a replica guitar of his, I'm happy for those who get a chance to mimick his guitar, if that's really what floats their boat. But TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS AND THEY DONT EVENT SPECIFY WHETHER OR NOT THE PICKUPS ARE MADE COMPLETELY AUTHENTICALLY TO JOHN'S SPECS???? The pickups ARE the tone?!? You pay enough money to BUY A NEW CAR and you don't even get a 100% spec'd, down to the finest details recreation?? It makes it even more pathetic - have fun dressing up as a rock star and playing in your room with your toy $20k guitar prop. Just disgusting.
Not suprised that John had little involvement in the development. This is such a money grab from Fender but I get it. The Mike Mcreedy one would be better if you plan to actually pkay it.
Obviously not interested in the masterbuilt version, I would have been in the Mexican version but if it has the 7.25 radius and narrow tall frets combination, like the masterbuilt, this is a recipe for a high action and not to my taste. I can’t fucking stand narrow tall frets. Such a shame…
Even if you had $20,000 laying around, you would be better buying almost anything else. Custom Shop guitars are nice, but the Master Builts, which I have owned, are not worth the extra few thousand dollars. Include Frusciante with Fender for ripping off the public. Frucsciate does not need the extra cash, but that did not stop him.
John being difficult about the project because it's gonna lead attention away from his solo work, ha-ha! He should talk to Yamaha for a new SG2000, THAT would be awesome. Not for 20 grand though!
The "Custom Shop" and its "Master Builders" is the biggest cash-grab in modern guitar history, along with those insanely-priced Gibson limited editions. They use the exact same woods as the regular run guitars, nothing remotely special about them. But businesses will do what businesses do, obviously- it's maximally lucrative for them, so why not. The Custom Shop used to be worthy of its name, but now it just churns out stuff by the tens of thousands, and does "limited editions" like this of standard spec'd instruments with some extra relic work. None of the wood is hand-carved, all the "master builders" do is assemble + setup, they don't even paint them- and I'm not sure who does the relic work. These guitars are not inspired, magical, pieces of art- they are just a byproduct of late-stage capitalism and merely bargaining chips for the rich who will never play them. Sad state of affairs, surprised Frusciante even signed off on this tbh.
I've seen much nicer, less demolished looking vintage 60`s Strat's for going under 30k, so why on earth if i have the coin should i buy this guitar instead of a vintage 1962 Strat? Just because its a Frusciante replica? If you make just one ding more, its not a Frusciante Replica anymore but a new danged up guitar for 20k. And all this masterbuild stuff, come on, its still a Strat, the on purpose most basic bolt on guitar type. There simply isn't that much to 'masterwork' on such a simple instrument and if there is, then why on hell does a custom shop exist anyway? Same goes for 'Kirk's' Greeny Replica.
I hope they don’t sell a single one of them. This is grimy. They’ve made affordable replicas before (look at the EVH replicas for like $2500) This is ludicrous and I hope they sell a total of ZERO.
So you knew...Interesting most people would share w/their audience out of respect. I guess we all know who the NARC in the room is for future reference. Don't placate me like I'm your mother boy.
😂 thinking I, or “most people”, would share everything with you guys is incredibly naive. If I share everything I’m told, then no one would share anything with me because I can’t be trusted.
The lackluster music, that the Red Hot Chili Peppers make today, is such a tragic shame, that I’m embarrassed to wear my Chili Peppers shirts out in public….😖
It's ridiculous. It should have been like Rory Gallagher's signature, cs teambuilt, still pricey but possible to get, not this just for the rich idiotism...
Between the Mother's milk and BSSM era, Frusciante was at his best as a live player. Since then, yawn, and to be honest, the Froosh worship is totally over the top imho. He is a decent player no doubt, but there are many out there who would wipe the floor with him. As for the price of this guitar, frankly, it's obscene. 20,000 for this guitar when you can get a top notch custom shop for around one QUARTER of the price, but without the 'superstar status' mark up of course. For anywhere between 3,000 and 6,000 you can get a very finely crafted instrument, with perfect finishing, made to your exact specifications. This as usual demonstrates the success of marketing campaigns over production costs, the sometimes cynical nature of well respected brands, and is usually aimed at those with more money than sense. Crazy world eh.
Well I wouldn't say you can use him to wipe anything, especially live or improvising wise. I do think that creatively with RHCP after Californication it's not their best. Now on solo or other projects he did interesting stuff. But if you think that good guitar work is only the funk rock, psychedelic harder stuff... i understand but he did good work after that, just not his best eventually or oriented to the stuff you like the most. He is one of the best of his generation, for sure. Now the guitar... absurd price yes. I was never into signature stuff, whether it's Frusciante or Gilmour. I have my own signature strat.

Must be your first day on the internet, people complain about anything and everything. Everyone knows the target audience for these things have more money than sense, and the vast majority of people will not be buying them but that doesn’t mean you can’t point out it’s absurdity.
It costs 20K and yet they didn’t even bother to replicate the actual specs of his guitar. It’s more funny for the lack of effort on Fenders part than anything and it’s also not the first time they’ve done this kind of thing, even on the much more accessible production runs.
I’ve read johns Strat has 2000s standard Strat pickups in it.
it did according to dave lee, until he came back this time, they put the originals back in.
john says seymour duncan ssl-1's
@@johnpickk7526thought I’d find you here LOL
3:00 yeah, almost.
Apparently Paul Waller wound pickups for John’s 55 Strat after he came back to the band for Unlimited Love. So there’s definitely a spec they could have used, but this being the 62 it would have been interesting to solve the mystery of which pickups he’s actually using. Maybe he is using stock Abigail Ybarra 60’s?
Do you have a source for that for the 55?
Nevermind, it was from that Total Guitar interview! Thanks for the reminder, that’s a good connection
@@JustinJeske I tried pasting the link to the Total Guitar Interview, but it wasn't working, but yes, that's where I read it.
"John was nearly impossible to work with." Yep, that's on brand. Someone should've just told him, we can make your Martin acoustic too, we can make a custom fkn midi stack if you want! He was probably like yea you can do it but leave me out of it. I'm not doing any interviews. Guess he fell for the $ in the end, like everyone
That's what makes me mad, I'm so disappointed of John.
@@luciano0593Yeah, for a guy who was uncomfortable (back in the the early 90s) with the band playing stadiums because he thought they were selling out and weren’t playing to “real fans,” this seems like a real “jumping the shark” moment.
I mean, the guy is already insanely rich, so I’m trying to understand his mindset here.
@@LeonRus5660 yes it's really against his values and who he's always been, it surprises me more of his fans aren't bothered by this guitar coming out.
@@luciano0593 that is John
@@LeonRus5660 by most standards insanely rich but not for who he is and the circles he runs in but agree. HOw much money do you need? I imagine someone did all the work and he just kinda signed off on it w/the stipulation being "Im not doing any press, I'll try it for a song or two" But I'll take the checks.
For that price, not way they would put wrong pickups
Good Lord!
Everyone getting upset with the price. Fender has been doing this, with the same prices, on many signature guitars.
Just posted my video in portuguese about it as well, but here in the UK pre-sale is 18.699 BRITISH pounds! 😅😂
Yeah that’s pricey lol
@ let's hope those roadworn version are still yet to come LOL
Love the trem arm though, prolly 350 ?
Check updates man, she will handwound specific pickups for this one ;)
I would rather buy 5 to 10 to 20 new/used guitars. Hey, as a small business owner myself I am realizing there is X amount of our population that has stupid money. So hey no shame in making expensive things for Rich people. I am in landscape construction. It’s wealthier clientele that have me doing my most custom work. Most people can’t afford for you to even put up a new fence for them. I am in that demographic myself. I like buying an old cheap strat Off of reverb and making it my own. That’s the fun part about Fender strats and teles. I would rather spend 1200 bucks to make a super strat out of all the components I want then even dream of spending more than $5000 on a custom shop. But that’s just cause I don’t have the money. More power to you. Obviously the guitar isn’t going to play itself, but I do kind of believe in getting what you want, as far as the way a guitar looks and feels, and how you resonate with it.
any predictions as to when they release the affordable version? they will probably price it at around 2K- 2.5$, at least I hope the don't go above that
Gotta start calling this what it is… a 20k paint job.
I feel like you can buy an actual 62 for the same price, am I wrong?
There are the 60s Vinteras second hand for 600€, besides the finish they have the same specs. Pickups is not important as the playability, the sound comes from that. The radius and the frets are the same on both Vintera and a 62.
His guitar has a 3-way switch and not a 5-way. Not sure about the 7.25 radius neck. Read from his former guitar tech Dave Lee they changed the radius to 9..
Yes I think they did the wrong radius. 7.25 is not easy to play…
And narrow tall frets (6105) (which are not that narrow) is another thing, since JF was so against jumbo fretwire in the early 90's, maybe he changed his mind
where did you read this because I never found that source
@Evy-1988 This is from an interview he gave in the 90s
“... Man you gotta get new frets.” And he put on these huge frets. Jumbos. Which were like shit. So wimpy. When I play, I press down hard on the strings. And when I did that with the jumbos, it didn’t even sound in tune. So I just told him to make it fretless."
John Frusciante, Guitar World. November 1991
@@diimuziku thank you but I was wondering about the radius.
Abigail retired some time ago, (though coming back to do small runs, fender also have many sets of her NOS pickups under lock and key.)
so id say these are definitely just random 60s style custom shop pickups, which like you said, SUCKS for 20k lol.
To fit with the rest of the guitar, this should have pickups replicating john's originals/whatever are in there.
You should watch my follow up video because I talk about the pickups and what is actually confirmed to be going on. And idk why you reposted your comment lol.
@JustinJeske will do! And I reposted because of a troll spamming the replies previously
waiting for the USA standard or Mexico made. i hope they release those. btw, i saw on Andertons web 100 guitars are made. idk.
the obvious thing would be that JF actually uses those pickups in his Stratocaster?
no..seymour duncan antiquities
@@trublu3483 how do you know
When did Frusciante replace the pickguard?
1998-9
@@johnpickk7526 didn't like the color? Or was it warping too bad or something?
@@blakebeamer i dont think the reason is known, but id assume warping/cracking as you can see it cracked along the neck pickup typical screw spot in early pics right before its swapped out, sometimes it causes weird resonance issues with the neck pickup, people refer to it as 'stratitus' with old strats lol
after btw. up until 2004 you see a mint green pickguard, from stadium arcadium on its different
@Evy-1988 he changed it again at some point, (you may be right with around 2004-5) I believe the difference is that the screw hole changes to the USA standard spec, before he had a 62 accurate spec guard on it (still a Repro, replacing the original)
Fender cashing in for bringing back rosewood. 😄
The mexico version is 2.5k which isn't bad
the B is not silent on her last name Ybarra sir
You could get a true vintage one for near that price
unfortunately it will be very expensive, but it's nice to see John involved in a signature project!!!
Thanks for sharing justin, im planning on grabbing one. Could share details on it if/when i get it if you are interested
cool good luck😊
That’s awesome, for sure! Would love to hear from you!
Can't I just go through the Custom Shop Guide, select the Master Built level and then just tell him to create this specific strat for half that price?
I think even John thinks this is ridiculous. but at the end it's about $$
For the price you can get a nice custom-shop Stratocaster and a high end amp with boutique pedals. Heck add few thousands and you can get a “real” vintage strat. 😅😅.
20 K best Price ever made :'D My biggest wish is the Fender Fiesta Red Frusciante Guitar :D
I get it buying the original guitar as a piece of history and putting it in a museum. But buying signature models, artificially "relicad" is just ridiculous... People strive to buy that which has no price: talent and hardwork.
They took the mcgreAAady strat and changed a few things. One if them was the price.. Insired by gibson is just not epiphone anymore
I think he sounded best until SA, and that tall thing with the frets were not present before UL
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
19k in the UK. Could buy a real one for that. Not for me.
Why tf would anyone buy this? 1) wanting the specific wear and tear that's on John's strat is insane and obsessive.
2) even if I did understand valuing someone else's guitat, this isn't even his guitar! It's a replica.
Who the hell will buy 20k 60' strat instead of real 60' strat?!??!
Fender went crazy for that 20k!!
And ONCE AGAIN...
NO KEITH RICHARDS SIGNATURE TELECASTER GUITAR... SIGH
..
Not suprised that John had little involvement in the development. This is such a money grab from Fender but I get it. The Mike Mcreedy one would be better if you plan to actually pkay it.
So how much is a real 1962 strat? 🤣
Simply ridiculous! Respect for John as a great guitarist, but that's it.
It will be out of the price range of 99% of guitarists, and that is a shame? Even the Mexican version will be overpriced!
$33k AUD yikes 😬
For very silly people.
20k 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
I’ll hold out for the River Phoenix signature model. Sorry band and guy are bad.
Again prove Fender is only in it for the money.
What a ridicilous price.😲🤬🤬🤬
Hell a beat up $200 dollar strat...He aint that good. Hes alright...But to sell an old strat as new is a ripski...
I hope they don’t sell a single one of them. This is grimy. They’ve made affordable replicas before (look at the EVH replicas for like $2500)
This is ludicrous and I hope they sell a total of ZERO.
Well... I think I will never buy fender.
20.000 reasons to not buy it
It's ridiculous. It should have been like Rory Gallagher's signature, cs teambuilt, still pricey but possible to get, not this just for the rich idiotism...
this dumb, all the mojo is actually in that vintage guitar, not in some stupid repo.
A 20k guitar doesn't make the person a better player either. It's for people with no sense. Money grab.
