- When Lucy wants to be in Ricky's show Ricky finally gives in and lets Lucy audition for him but there is a catch Lucy must fit in a size 12 costume at the audition Lucy rips the costume trying to make it fit
then Ricky says if Lucy fits in it she can be in the show not giving up Lucy works out and eats right and ends up being in the show.
With all her other talents, it was easy to forget that Lucille Ball was one hell of a dancer. Her and Desi together are absolute perfection
UA-cam 🎥 rocks
I agree
When I was younger I saw a couple of old movies where she sang and she was amazing.
She had a good teacher.
I believe she got her start as a chorus girl.
2021: Here we are, 70 years later, in awe of this performance.
Absolutely - Desilu Productions lives on -
Exactly…it just put a smile on my face. It came into my head and I knew that I could find it here.
Back than when people got in on talent! Not just getting by on their looks
Yes indeed

I love how Lucy keeps perfect rhythm with her gum chewing while she shakes her "rumba beat" and the swinging purse and the deadpan expression the whole time.
That was wonderful -- and then you see 👀 Ricky's reaction and things take off from there❗
Lucy was a perfectionist. This number was rehearsed numerous times before filming. Plus Lucy was an excellent dancer, having broken into Hollywood as a 'Goldwyn Girl.' I've watched this number too many times to count and I always notice things. If you look REALLY careful at Lucy, especially her eyes, it looks like pure concentration. Like she wants to get every single gesture and move correct. And she never STOPS the serious concentration. Desi, on the other hand, looks like he's just plain out having a blast with the whole thing! He looks SO happy!
I noticed that too…. And I thought I had good rhythm! Lol
@@dianetheisen8664 yeah I loved when he said ,” oh no!” Cause he just knew Lucy was gonna screw this up. Hahahah she fooled him.
@@Heavenzvoice Yep. She nailed it.
One of her rare "showbiz scheme" victories!
A lot of people remember Lucy for her comedy, but she was a very talented dancer as well, as she shows in this scene.
I love watching them do this! Another good one is when she dances with Van Johnson.
@@teresaogle I just recorded that episode of Lucy with Van Johnson singing the song "How About You." It was one of my favorite episode and what a great song! Lucy was so multi-talented....
Look at her early films. She was a knockout, and she could handle drama as well as comedy.
Indeed. If you recall, she started out as a dancer before moving to comedy?
Lucy was a Zigfeld Girl, which was very prestigious. She was extremely beautiful and multi-talented.
Those two had mad chemistry! Whether acting or singing together they made a great pair!! True legends!!
Hello Cindy, How are you doing?
Unfortunately not. Sure, they had chemistry, but they weren't good for each other.
@@englishatheart I meant on screen and their musical performances!
I love at the end when Ethel opens the utility closet door and that poor lady is in there tied up so Lucy could do the number with Ricky.

She had to. Ricky never wanted her to perform, let alone with him.

As a Cuban immigrant in the mid 60s, a kid in a strange place, Desi was always a source of pride for my family. I had the pleasure of actually seeing him perform with his daughter in the 80s. I will never forget that.

And 25 years later on Saturday Night Live tv, he did a great, maturer Maurice Chevalier boulevardier understated cover of this with his son Desi on bongos, Laraine Newman and other SNL repertory chicks in salsa costumes, topped off with a pan-studio Conga line. Such a talented man. A true television pioneer. People today have no idea the impact he had on both the technical as well as the business aspects of the TV they watch today.
Agreed!! I love Lucy so so much and she deserves all the glory she gets but I do wish Desi had a little more recognition for what he did. But if desi were here I’m sure he’d say “all eyes on Lucy, don’t worry about me” !

I enjoy how this dance number is performed legitimately (but comedically, of course) without any pratfalls or slapstick activities. Lucy doesn't screw up embarrassingly; she stays in character and dances very skillfully.
There will NEVER be another Desi & Lucy, their love shined through in their talent. They may have divorced and married others, but you can feel they still loved one another, always & forever!

When I was a kid, this would be when I’d go make a pop tart. Now decades later, I really appreciate how great a performer Desi Arnaz was.

Well, MAYBE Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers! LOL
I think Lucille Ball was the greatest performer in the history of American television. One NEVER tires of watching Lucy and Ricky Ricardo.
Interestingly, Paul Harvey did a "Rest of the Story" talk about a girl who was told by experts that she would never make it in show business. This is that girl.
That was absolutely beautiful. I love how Lucy, completely took away Ricky's thunder, as soon as Lucy entered the room, I knew that it was game over for Ricky. It's so sad that they passed, but at least I can still watch the reruns of the show. Lucille Ball, was 💯% comedy gold. 🌹🌈 🌹

One thing I never got. I am astounded at the complexity of the I Love Lucy theme song. The rhythm section, alone, (cow-bells, drums, etc.) is surprisingly complex. Once the harp and horns kick in, it's magic...

I just love this scene. Not only because Lucy and Desi were fabulous, plus they brought Latino culture to American homes through tv, but also the music they are dancing to after Cuban Pete and Sally Sweet songs is the instrumental version of a real rumba called Óyeme, Cachita, composed by Rafael Hernández, Puerto Rican, like me.
This just had to be one of the best dance routines that I ever saw Lucy and Desi too this just showed me how much they really loved each other it was unfortunate that things had to happened in their lives but that's what happens when you go Hollywood but I really don't think they ever stopped loving each other ever till the day they both died. Lucy Ricardo couldn't sing. Lucille Ball is quite a different story.
Lucille sang "Hey Look Me Over"from Wildcat a phenomenal song - also sang it with Dinah Shore and others - great song and great to hear her sing it. Lucie Arnaz once commented that Wildcat was such a bad choice for her mother to do since her mother could neither sing or dance. I would rather watch and listen to Lucille Ball any day of the week over her daughter. She's ok but I feel that if it were not for her parents' celebrity status she would not have become a known entity. While the play did not get great reviews, Lucille was a smash and box office sell out. Critics were negative re. the writing not about Lucille's performance.

I love Lucy and Desi. 💕❣️
Lucy was once a showgirl, and she could still do that strutting walk years later, when she was in her 70s. Never missed a step in all those years, either.
Such smart actors!
It's amazing that this couple wrapped up so much talent. I Love Lucy reruns never stop making us laugh! Thanks to Lucy and Desi for so much everlasting fun. I can watch these shows over and over forever!
Yes, I have a prayer in my heart for both of them to this day. Appreciate the fun and laughter they have bestowed upon the world. My #1 show to laugh with and enjoy many times over. I don't even watch tv anymore (for years now), but I did buy all the episodes of ILL on UA-cam.
It was so rare that they ever! let Lucy do an dance number without getting silly and messing it up, 😐 I was So Happy that they allowd her to dance this whole dance performance , and show how talented she really was, Dancer, Singer, and Actress. 😍😍😍😍 Love You Lucy, Thanks for being who you are.💖💕❤ You made the World a Happier place to live.
What do you mean "they allowed her?" Who is "they?" Lucy (and Desi) was the boss. It was THEIR studio. They owned it. And they owned the show. They were president and vice president of Desilu Productions!
@@retroguy9494 The agreed schtick for the show was Lucy wanted to be in show biz and Ricky did not want her to be - (the cover was she could not sing or dance) It was all apart of the agreed upon script. And of course she concurred. However the two times they broke the theme was Cuban Pete and Lucy Dances with Van Johnson. To a lesser extent they did easy dance numbers like the Anniversary Waltz etc. If she danced in ILL as well as she could dance - Ricky would have looked like a tyrant, not allowing her to flourish with her potentials - I am glad those two times they all decided it was ok to do. I could watch Cuban Pete and the Van Johnson skit over and over (in fact I have done such!)
@@LJ-ht4zs Yes, I realize all that and what you said is 100% true. But it STILL does not answer my question about the OP's statement "they ALLOWED her to do this." Lucy had full script approval of everything the writers wrote. No one overruled her and Desi.
Incidentally, I LOVE the anniversary waltz segment. Its just so beautiful.
She makes it look easy. I’ve been in awe of her ever since I was a kid watching reruns of her show over and over. She’s absolute perfection. I Love Lucy was the perfect name for the show. It speaks volumes.
Damn, I knew Lucy was hilarious, but I NEVER knew she could also cut a rug! I'm not kidding when I say that I'm impressed.
They really were perfect together. They may not have stayed married forever but they were really made for each other.
That Ricky and Lucy made quite a pair!! A handsome Cuban man and delightful Red-Head full of spunk!! I grew up watching I Love Lucy one of my favorite TV shows of all times!!❣🙏🏽❣
It breaks my brain that Lucy was beautiful AND a dancer AND a comedy genius AND a mom. Wow.
And the Head of Desilu TV Sudio! She’s brought Star Trek and Mission Impossible on the air during the 1860’s!
Why thank you 😂
They did so many great performances together! Lucy’s Cuban movement is awesome! That woman could really dance!
I grew up watching this show and I still love every single episode! This one was extra special--many of us agree.
So the “gringos” can dance Latin music! ....awesome, more than 40 yrs later I am still in love with Lucy! The First Lady of TV ever!!!!😍😍😍😍
I must have seen every single I Love Lucy episode about 100 times, long before it was available on DVD, CD or on the internet. When I was only about 4 years old, the show went into its first daytime syndication, and my mom always had the TV on at that time. It remained in syndication and was still being broadcasted nationally well into the 1980s on Nick at Nite. But every time I watch an episode today, either in its entirety or in part, and even though I pretty much have every episode memorized, I still feel the same joy that I felt when I first saw them over 60 years ago. I could never get tired of Lucy! In California in the 70s, it was said that the only thing you could turn and not get Lucy was the dishwasher. Once, Bob Hope told Lucy that I Love Lucy was shown in every country on earth, and he even heard that they had I Love Lucy in heaven. Lucy responded by saying, "If they do, they're not paying for it!" - a comment in reference to the royalty issues.
The correct lyrics, so far:
They call me Cuban Pete, I'm the king of the rhumba beat
When I play the maracas I go
Chick chicky boom, chick chicky boom
Yes sir I'm Cuban Pete, I'm the craze of my native street
When I start to dance everything goes
Chick chicky boom, chick chicky boom
The señoritas, they sing and how they swing with this rumbero
It's very nice, so full of spice
And when they dancin' they bring a happy ring the maraquero
Singin' a song, all the day long
So If you like the beat, take a lesson from Cuban Pete
And I'll teach you to chick chicky boom, chick chicky boom!!
Sí, señorita, I know that you will like the chicky boom chick
'Cause it's the dance of latin romance
And Cuban Pete doesn't teach you in a hurry like Arthur Murray
I come from Havana
And there's always mañana
So Señorita...
(Sally Sweet enters)
Pete: Oh no...!
Sally Sweet:
They call me Sally Sweet, I'm the queen of Delancey Street
When I start to dance everything goes
Chick chicky boom, chick chicky boom
Excuse me Mr. Pete, (yes maam)
Have the cubans a different beat?
If they have will you teach me to
Chick chick chicky boom, chick chicky boom
Cuban Pete:
Sí, senorita, I know that you will like the chicky boom chick (Sally: yeah, man!)
It's very nice, so full of spice
I'll place my hand on your hip and if you will just give me your hand
Then we shall try, just you and I.
Here in 2021 watching I Love Lucy reruns every night to stay sane. This episode is gold 😍
Desi absolutely kills it. If this doesn't make you want to get up and do the Rhumba, nothing will.
The world is going to hell but this incredible show brings me joy and comfort. They were incredible.
