And the tuning stability is a little freaky. I had to stretch third string once. ONCE. A week later it was about a 1/16th turn flat. Insane.

I've been using NYXL's for my Les Paul and SG for a few years now. For the tone and playability the NYXL's (IMO) are the best strings for my Gibson's. Interestingly though, for tone and playability, I use Super Slinky's for my Strat and Tele. For me the Slinky's sound and feel better on the Fender's and the NYXL's sound and feel better on the Gibson's. Just my experience.

I have 9 guitars. Started using D's color coded system works for me. Number 10 . To they last awhile but according to what songs and type of music you play weareabilty and sustainable sound differs. Skin cells build up and after long playing sessions humidity affects the lower tones. That is if you don't change them often.if you play Lot you need to change them more often. At least once a year for those who don't practice often. The string is affected by several factors, And
You must decide what or which factor can stay or go. I use now on my les paul are ghs boomers love em 10.5>50 my STRATS I use D's chang's them each 8 times A year. I switched once in a while just to have a change to erni ball also. I don't let one thing affect the end process.

Ernie ball paradigm strings are pretty expensive but worth it because they are the best strings on the market. They have a warranty on em where if you break em before 3 months they send you another pack free. Basically, these strings never snap they are super durable.

@@Lamz.. depends what we are talking here, steel strings will make the biggest difference in sound and are usually used for metal. If you can't hear the distinct difference between sounds then your not really playing music. No offense but took musical history and orchestra, there's a difference. If there were no difference in size of a string cello and bass would sound the same and a piano would sound like both.

Great to do a comparison. Sorry to have one small negative. To check first though......
The string packets shown before each trial. Is that what you used or an illustration? For example. The XL Nickel vs XL chrome. Bottom E 46 vs 48. 20 Wound vs 17 plain G? Using different gauges and constructions will obviously also colour the sound. What we wanted was a pure material comparison.
Anyway. Still a great piece of info. Thank you.

I think that, much like tone wood, string type makes a much bigger difference for acoustic guitars than electric guitars. Definitely some strings sound “brighter” or more mellow with acoustics. But with electric guitars I find it’s mostly about gauge. And even when it comes to gauge, it’s mostly about playability and not tone.

I bought my first electric guitar a few months ago. It’s just a cheap Squier Stratocaster that came in a package deal. I want to modify it to have better, and more personal sounds to suit my taste. Can I have better pickups installed on this guitar? If so, what brand and kind should I put on it? Should I replace all three pickups or just certain ones? I’m looking for a rock & roll tone. Most music I play is Floyd/Gilmour songs, and Rolling Stones, classic rock music. I watched some videos about changing pickups on cheap guitars, and a few videos mentioned Seymour Duncan Jr pickups. Are these any good? Should I go for those?
Also, I want to put better strings on it. I need light strings for my fingers, but also strings (and pickups) that hold notes for a long time. The strings that came on this cheap guitar are too twangy and “pingy” for the music I like to play. I want strings with more softer tones, won’t hurt my fingers, and hold (Gilmour) notes for a long time.
What combo of pickups and strings do you suggest? Im a beginner so I’m totally clueless about this. I need some place to start and then go from there. Thanks!
