His Holiness the 13th Dalai Lama, Thupten Gyatso, lived in Darjeeling from 1910-1912. In February of 2024, I visited the site in Darjeeling, India where His Holiness lived during the 2 years. Currently, this site is home to the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Center. I had the opportunity to interview Jampa Tenzin lag, a staff member of the center. The Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center is very blessed to have had HH the great 13th Dalai Lama stay here from 1910
-1912. HH the great 13th Dalai Lama's legacy as the greatest advocate for a free Tibet, also known for redeclaring Tibet's national independence and for his reforms and modernization initiatives. HH The 13th Dalai Lama is regarded as one of most important leaders in Tibetan history. During his stay in India he realised the dangers from China and the importance of RE-ASSERTING TIBET’S INDEPENDENCE. As the Manchu dynasty collapsed in 1911, HH Thubtan Gyatso returned to Tibet in 1912 and EXPELLED ALL THE OFFICIALS OF THE CHINESE CONSULATE IN LHASA KNOWN AS AMBAN AND DECLARED THE END OF PRIEST-PATRON RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TIBET AND CHINA ESTABLISHED DURING THE TIME OF 5th DALAI LAMA NGAWANG LOBSANG GYATSO, This came to be known as DECLARATION OF TIBET’S INDEPENDENCE! Tibet was independent at all times but He annulled the relationship between Tibet and China in the form of Priest and patron that existed from the time of 5th Dalai Lama. This relationship was on EQUAL FOOTING AND TIBET WAS IN NO WAY SUBSERVIENT TO CHINA!!! In fact, the Lama holds a higher status than the patron in Buddhism.
