Tamang རྟ་དམག་ technically means Cavalry regiment dispatched by Tibetan emperor Trisong Detsen in 8AD. Tibetan empire was at its heights during his time. Even the current Dalai Lamas family trace their root to Phenpo in central Tibet. Trisiong Detsen stationed soldier at varoous frontier he occupied and ruled.
