I've mentioned before that I'm not a model railway enthusiast but your attention to detail, your excellent commentary and just you passion for this layout keeps me watching every video. Happy Christmas and I'm looking forward to the next instalment.
It was a great shock when we saw you have to tear down your previous layout; but the anticipation of what is to come is far greater. Thank you for what you are showing us in your videos, I for one am looking forward to those to come. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year Richard.
When I was wiring a fiddle yard some years ago I stuck drawing pins into the underside of the boards wherever I had dropper wires, especially for the points. The dropper wires were then soldered to these, and then the main wiring was subsequently soldered onto them - this reduces the need for long dropper wires and saves cable. Also, when used under points and section gaps, it creates an image of the track above which also makes wiring and trouble shooting easier. Presumably, you will be using connectors of some sort at the baseboard joints in order to preserve the ability to separate the boards. As an aside, I rather liked the scrapyard in the old layout - it reminded me of Barry Island and Woodhams' Yard.
Again as in the past..creating a jig to automate a procedure and replicate your work over and over has made your yard very impressive both in straightness and track spacing. Your attention to detail is very inspiring. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to following your progress in 2018. Tom

Solid work! I hope that you are rewarded for the care and patience you display with years of trouble free running! Starting to feel the bug growing, and all being well 2018 will finally see me start a new layout (only 30 years since the last one).
I was dreading soldering droppers to tracks, but this way looks far easier than soldering the droppers to the outsides of the rails and they’ll be hidden as well. Up until now, I was thinking of getting ready soldered fish plates but I am definitely sold on this idea!
By far the most interesting video about model railway construction I've ever seen. Thanks for that, and I'll certainly have a look at your other (and future) videos.
Dear Everard Junction, thanks for your many instructional videos over the years - most informative. May I add some tips for soldering. Always apply a small amount of solder to the soldering iron tip before soldering any joint or tinning. The liquid solder will transfer the heat much more efficiently than a dry tip and can reduce the damaging effect of heat on plastics. Another tip is to have a damp soldering iron sponge or folded damp kitchen towel to clean the soldering iron tip before each joint is made. This will help in reducing unwanted dry crystaline joints that might fail over time. The soldering process should be: clean the tip, apply solder to the tip then make the joint as you have instructed. I hope this helps.
Fantastic amount of storage really good idea, this was one of the mistakes I made with my layout that I will address once I can start again next year. Looking forward to the next update.
Hi Richard, with such a densely spaced fiddle yard you may find it worth nailing a 3mm thick strip of hardboard to the edge nearest to you as a safety barrier. With such close tracks a slight fumble may cause a domino effect such that part or all of a rake of coaches decide to roll sideways onto the floor. I applied a strip so it was about 20 to 25mm high relative to the rail top, enough to stop a roll overboard but not enough to be a nuisance. Tension lock type couplings are very tenacious when they want to be. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year, I eagerly look forward to viewing your forthcoming videos. Jim.

Lovely work Richard. I too am a joiner and constructed the OO Live Steam Roadshow layout that you may have seen at a show. I was working with Birch ply ! It is such a good feeling when it all comes together well, due to accurate and thorough preparation. Your on my fave list!

Hope your going to have another Canal scene, I copied yours in a small way and very pleased the way it came together, did take some time with the layers of water. Couple of Canal boats gravel footpath with a grass embankment.Mines a small steam layout, no diesels, just an age thing!Happy new year to you, now studding your video on ballast to points , very daunting!

Fantastic to finally see track going down. You must be so happy to reach this stage. Regarding the crossover I too have prototypicalish spacing using 25mm aluminium box between the rails when laying. I found after a couple of attempts that the best way to join 2 points is to cut the stock rails only and lead the rails on the frog alone. Trim the chairs on the sleepers to accommodate an isolating fishplate and you're good to go. Merry Christmas and Happy New year

Nicely done and very neat. Looks great though I might suggest s hinged dust cover for the fiddle yard area which could clip up and out of the way when running. This was pretty well needed on the large fiddle yard we had on the display layout I worked on in the past. Kept the yard from needing constant maintenance. Looking forward to your next installment and especially, the beginning of scenic work. Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and productive New Year.

when you glue a road base using PVA glue with cork underlay it in fact increases noise transmission. If you want to decrease noise use a soft set glue on the ballast with a cellulose underlay and use a silicon type flex adhesive like selleys 3-1 to glue down the underlay.

Hi Richard. Nice to see some track being laid and that you're not wasting track that you've already bought. Good move with the soldering done beneath the track. It's something that I've done for years, and looks particularly good when on scenic sections. Regarding having shorter trains on a single fiddleyard track... one thing that you could do, is to fit DCC block detectors. You can set things up where you can have 5 blocks on a single siding, with a DMU in each of them. As block #1 becomes vacant, the DMU in block #2 will move into block one, and as block #2 becomes vacant, the unit in that block will move into block #2... and so on. So your units will all shuffle forward by one block leaving a gap at the back for the unit you're operating to go into, without having to manually shuffle. You an also use something like JMRI with a laptop (or even better a touch control monitor) to create a virtual panel making it easy to route trains. With a push of a single button on the screen, you can set macros so the points will change in sequence and create a route all the way around the layout.
I will be doing something similar to that if not the same when I get around to sorting the control out. Automatic braking and slow approach is also something i'm looking into.
Regarding JMRI for route control, I did something for a club layout a few years back. I had it set up so that by pressing two buttons on the screen, you could set a 360 degree loop from a fiddle-yard siding, through at station on the scenic side, and back to the fiddle-yard. It was set up so when you press a button, it goes through the list of point motors, selecting which will be activated and in which direction they need to be set, and then each point is flicked over in turn. Would you be interested in having a Google hangout with me so we can discuss it? You'll only need a microphone. I can show you how to set it up and how to set up the macros to make it work properly. Let me know if you're interested.
Great job. I costed my own and it works out quite a bit cheaper using extruded foam that ply and cork. Each to their own I say, but I forgot to mention that living in Australia, buying cork is very expensive. Your buy price is the same as we pay but the freight charges of some $65 puts the cost out the window. Well for me anyways.

1979 SL Merc, eh? S'funny how often an enthusiasm for classic cars goes with one for trains. My pals and I are as likely to be at a classic car show or historic motorsport event such as Pendon or a heritage railway. Sadly sold my own SL last year for family reasons, a wonderful motor, best I ever had. Another informative video for which I doff my hat to you.

Thanks Dave. Scenic side will be code 75 with re-spaced concrete sleepers. If I have room I'll be trying out some of the new peco bullhead track on a branch line. Should look quite a bit more professional than the previous layout.
Fine work Richard! Maybe you can paint the backscenes for your fiddleyard skyblue to make it look even more nice. Further suggestion is to add a small border in front of the edge.
Tip: If you use Evo stik PVA non-waterproof glue (in the green bottle) to stick Peco track down. When you want to lift or move the track you only need to apply a little warm water. Wait a few minutes and the old glue will have returned to a liquid state. You can then even wash the track carefully in a shower to remove most of the balllast and other scenic bits.

Hi Richard A sizeable fiddle yard for sure, can't wait to see some trains on there. Good choice using code 75 as all points and cross overs are electrofrogs and it looks better, something I wish I'd realised before buying all the code 100 that I did. Fleischman joiners are spring loaded and make an excellent connection, Jim on Hoover motion uses these to great effect and didn't require quite so many droppers which you make look easy but are a pain to do for so many tracks. Great vid I aspire to such perfection, one thing though I would add a board along the front about 3 inches high just so trains on the front road can’t topple off the front, I had it happen to me reaching over to the back of my yard

Great videos! Super resource for learning and interesting to watch. I don't know what your plan is for the layout but how about having a Dmu service area on the main layout with a small one or two lane shed and wash with a loop line or two to leave units at on the station approach or on the approach to the fiddle yard at the city scene end. Run one of the loop lines to the station and you have a layout feature which doubles as a dmu fiddle yard where you could store your units on the layout and they won't trip over the longer kit in the fidde yard. Think the south end of Sheffield Station or Bristol Barton Hill for inspiration. I don't want to turn your comments section into a "why don't you do this" forum but it could be a practical way to free up lanes in the main fiddle yard.

Great and inspirational work here but I would suggest soldering the wires at right angles (to the way you have done them) and then you will only need one hole to feed the wires.
All looks great and very neat... and by bringing the track closer together it gives a much more prototypical look, even though it's not in the scenic area! We get told off in the rail industry for calling all running lines 'fast and 'slow lines' - the Western were and still are, very particular in that they have 'Mains' and 'Reliefs' instead, which are laid out in pairs (i.e. Up and Down main as a pair then up and down relief) with a 10 foot spacing rather than a 6' spacing between pairs. This might help you get the GW mainline 'look' when laying the track as model railway set track has otherwise non prototypical geometry.
Interesting that you have used the Peco curved set track. Having installed one to gain more space in my fiddle. I now find that quite few locos do not like the sharp curvature and fall off !!. Back to the drawing board.

Great job. I costed my own and it works out quite a bit cheaper using extruded foam that ply and cork. Each to their own I say, but I forgot to mention that living in Australia, buying cork is very expensive. Your buy price is the same as we pay but the freight charges of some $65 puts the cost out the window. Well for me anyways.

1979 SL Merc, eh? S'funny how often an enthusiasm for classic cars goes with one for trains. My pals and I are as likely to be at a classic car show or historic motorsport event such as Pendon or a heritage railway. Sadly sold my own SL last year for family reasons, a wonderful motor, best I ever had.

Thanks Dave. Scenic side will be code 75 with re-spaced concrete sleepers. If I have room I'll be trying out some of the new peco bullhead track on a branch line. Should look quite a bit more professional than the previous layout.
Fine work Richard! Maybe you can paint the backscenes for your fiddleyard skyblue to make it look even more nice. Further suggestion is to add a small border in front of the edge.
Tip: If you use Evo stik PVA non-waterproof glue (in the green bottle) to stick Peco track down. When you want to lift or move the track you only need to apply a little warm water. Wait a few minutes and the old glue will have returned to a liquid state. You can then even wash the track carefully in a shower to remove most of the balllast and other scenic bits.
Copydex is also good as it is a water based contact glue. Holds tracks pretty quick and will allow for easy pull-up if needed.

A sizeable fiddle yard for sure, can't wait to see some trains on there. Good choice using code 75 as all points and cross overs are electrofrogs and it looks better, something I wish I'd realised before buying all the code 100 that I did. Fleischman joiners are spring loaded and make an excellent connection, Jim on Hoover motion uses these to great effect and didn't require quite so many droppers which you make look easy but are a pain to do for so many tracks.

Great vid I aspire to such perfection, one thing though I would add a board along the front about 3 inches high just so trains on the front road can’t topple off the front, I had it happen to me reaching over to the back of my yard

Fantastic to see track down on layout mk2. Your efforts make my slow progress on a much less ambitious layout pale into insignificance!...

Great videos! Super resource for learning and interesting to watch. I don't know what your plan is for the layout but how about having a Dmu service area on the main layout with a small one or two lane shed and wash with a loop line or two to leave units at on the station approach or on the approach to the fiddle yard at the city scene end. Run one of the loop lines to the station and you have a layout feature which doubles as a dmu fiddle yard where you could store your units on the layout and they won't trip over the longer kit in the fidde yard. Think the south end of Sheffield Station or Bristol Barton Hill for inspiration. I don't want to turn your comments section into a "why don't you do this" forum but it could be a practical way to free up lanes in the main fiddle yard.

Great and inspirational work here but I would suggest soldering the wires at right angles (to the way you have done them) and then you will only need one hole to feed the wires.
Quality as usual, layout envy and you’ve only done the fiddle yard.
All looks great and very neat... and by bringing the track closer together it gives a much more prototypical look, even though it's not in the scenic area! We get told off in the rail industry for calling all running lines 'fast and 'slow lines' - the Western were and still are, very particular in that they have 'Mains' and 'Reliefs' instead, which are laid out in pairs (i.e. Up and Down main as a pair then up and down relief) with a 10 foot spacing rather than a 6' spacing between pairs. This might help you get the GW mainline 'look' when laying the track as model railway set track has otherwise non prototypical geometry.

Interesting that you have used the Peco curved set track. Having installed one to gain more space in my fiddle. I now find that quite few locos do not like the sharp curvature and fall off !!. Back to the drawing board.
