  • RJ Corman Railroad is reactivating an historic Myrtle Beach, South Carolina abandoned railway branch line! South Carolina trains will return to the hurricane damaged Myrtle Beach! Railfan Magazine had an article about passenger trains returning for the tourists to ride from Conway, South Carolina to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Trains have not run in years and as this video shows the tracks are weedy bad track with rotten ties and a huge lift bridge that will need major repairs. I filmed all the interesting spots on this branch line on August 9, 2018. I just found out that the tank car in this video on the siding in Red Hill, SC at 14:15 was abandoned there by Carolina Coastal when they shut down. My excellent source says that several other railcars were written off and abandoned also. Lets hope this actually happens. Thanks for watching! And since they OWN the Line, it is also Not abandoned. Railroad tracks are never abandoned. They can go unused for a long period of time but are still owned by Their Railroad Company and can Reopen and Use the Lines When ever They want to.

A lot of them have been sold. You are correct though that if they still own the property no issues with permits and it really should be inspected.

I grew up here in Mass and about 1/4 mile away is train tracks and I remember as a kid the crossing towers where the the watchmen would have to step outside and crank the gates down and up and they used flares every time a train came, one day while in my yard I heard the whistle blowing and looked, I seen the black smoke and knew it was not a normal train, it was a locomotive the was wood powered..I am 60yrs and I would love to see the old tracks around the country come back into use, the tracks near me are still in use and in fact you can go to the next town over and catch a train to Boston, in the summer you can take one to Cape Cod...i miss the old days and someday we are going to be free again and hopefully we can bring back the old rail trains, I live in Taunton, this city use to make trains and had a round house but of course every time they elect someone that is not from that era they say out with the old and in with the new, honestly" they could care less about how old something is, they all make money on back room deals...thanks fro the video...subbed...

Frank you need to be a mover and shaker. Get elected in some sort of elected official and start moving and shaking things up. Make things happen. I know you can do it. I live north of you in the Braintree area. I'm so glad that years ago they restored the old colony line. Love seeing the trains pass by. Randolph used to have 2 separate rail lines passing thru. One has been restored as the Old colony Middleboro line and the other line the tracks were ripped up and now it's a bike path. Glad we still have something.

As someone who spent family vacations at DeBordieu growing up and who still has family living at Pawleys Island, I have fond memories of day trips to Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island. One of my favorite sights going into Myrtle Beach is the old drawbridge, and I’ve followed the train tracks from the train station on out just for fun (yes, I’m that weird of a rail fan that I’ll follow old/abandoned tracks on Google Earth!). Nice to hear that they’re going to restore the bridge and tracks going to Conway so there will be passenger rail service to the beach again! WOOHOO!
HeavenOcopter?? First time I ever heard of “helicopter” being considered a cuss word, but to each their own.
Anyway, thanks for the trip back to my childhood and for giving me hope for the future!

Awesome Jaw Tooth you came to my neck of the woods. I live in tabor city I remember when the old Carolina Southern Railroad operated that line they serviced a coal burning power plant in Conway own by Santee Cooper where the tracks stop. when the plant closed I think it hurt the old rail company and they shut down after that I believe. RJ Corman has a regular rock train that comes through. The rail line starts in Mullins SC the Andrews subdivision CSX line then to Nicholls SC, Fairbluff NC, Chadbourn NC, Tabor City NC, Loris SC, Conway SC, and ending in Myrtle Beach. I’m a big rail fan keep up the awesome videos. But wait there’s more

Welcome ladies! The truly depressing thought is industries these rail lines once served have disappeared. Smaller towns like Myrtle Beach and Conway always had some sort of factory supplying jobs for locals and high school grads to make stuff to send across the USA and abroad. The jobs that are left remaining are light industry or service and knowledge skill based jobs.

I was stationed in Myrtle Beach during the 80's from 84 till 90. Even at that time....trains hardly ran that line at all. The only thing generating revenue on a steady bases were the coal cars brought in for the Santee Cooper powerplant in Conway. I've heard the rumors about RJ Corman wanting to upgrade the line and bring it back into service. If they do....they'll probably only do it for freight and the improvements won't cross the Waterway. The capital investment that would be required to fix that line for passenger service would be huge, and they'd never get regulatory approval from the DOT if they didn't.

The bike trails preserve bridges, which if not for the bike trail development would be pulled out and cut up for scrap, and embankments. Tunnels and cuts are kept clear of falls. Many of these routes were not self-supporting. Some had been bought by counties and states, so weren't burdened with property taxes. They couldn't generate enough revenue to pay for operating, maintenance and repair costs. Obsolete, inefficient, high-maintenance hand-me-down locomotives purchased for scrap value still couldn't keep the RRs going.

It was the Carolina Southern Railroad and they ceased operations back in 2012.
The bridge you were photographing crossed the intercoastal waterway. It was developed during WW2 so that ships could sail the inland waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States. It runs from Massachusetts southward along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the southern tip of Florida, then following the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, Texas. This was to protect them from German submarines!
PS. Is there any news from RJ Corman Inc on the progress regarding this line? Thanks!!

It wouldn't be a traditional passenger travel service, it would be a tourist scenic railway... Departs Conway, couple hour layover in Tabor City, returns to Conway. Probably four or five hours round-trip. Why Conway? Unfortunately the intracoastal bridge is in serious disrepair and RJ has no plans to fix it (as of just a couple months ago), so the scenic railway will have to be based out of Conway and not Myrtle Beach... This could be a big blow, because now you're asking tourists to drive from the beach to Conway to catch the train. It would definitely make more sense to base a scenic railway out of Myrtle Beach than Conway, that way the route could be Myrtle Beach to Conway, not Conway to Tabor City; there's literally nothing in Tabor City that people want to see. Of course if by some miracle they ever did get the bridge fixed and line open to Myrtle Beach, you'd possibly have Amtrak wanting in.

shine up those rails... Wooooo !! Like the RJ Corman engine !!

The whistle marker actually got it's start on the waters of England. When the Queens boat entered an inlet, two long blasts then a short blast followed by another long blast is Morse code for Q, which told people to make way, the Queen is coming threw!

Hopefully they will repair the rails before running any trains. A restored steam train would be perfect for this line!

Great video, I worked for a aluminum window and door manufacturer in Baltimore 1997 to 2010 and made many trips to Myrtle Beach. Never saw the train station but I have seen that bascule bridge.
It would be great if they get trains running again.
    Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍

There are a few more sidings still in place under the weeds there in Myrtle Beach. They are for businesses on the old "Y". The tracks are covered so badly that you really cant film them because nobody would be able to see them. The crossings just completely paved over the tracks but at least they are still in place. If you look on Google Maps you can make out where the "Y" is and you can trace the sidings in Myrtle Beach to the loading areas. I like looking at that old stuff but most of it is on private property. Thanks for watching!

Loved it. I'm looking foward to updates on this line and to see it's restoration.
I got a reccomendation too, if you can find out when it runs you should totally go back and try to get some footage of that RJ Corman Geep switching that industrial park.
    Great video as always!

    • @kevinmercer8913

Probably 20 -30 years back someone (probably the Highway Dept) repainted it and removed the old 2-lane highway surface that previously was on there and replaced it with that narrow bike path or hiking trail-width paved surface that is there now. It has been in use a couple times recently but not often. It looked pretty bad before they repainted it. When our parents used to take us kids to MB when we were little and we drove past it my older brother used to call it "the ol' worn-out bridge".

2:15 That is almost certainly a decommissioned Southern Railway caboose. The only two major rail lines in the region that used the bay-window design were SR and L&N, and L&N didn't have a line into that part of SC.

I worked at a Chrysler Assembly Plant before taking a buy-out in early 2000’s. They had trains bringing parts in at one point many years before I started working there but ripped them out.
Here the problem: We never “stored” parts before assembly; it was “Just in time” delivery .... by truck. It would be impossible to use trains there because we had over 10,000 suppliers just for that one assembly plant.

Hey buddy I love your commentary especially the womb especially the Wu laugh out loud keep them coming keep them coming all that old train tracks the dormant tracks hope or wish some of these old trainline would come back to life there's a couple of them over here where I live in Los Angeles that I followed and they were abandoned for many many years and that just to think that at one time they were trains that used to pass over those tracks but now they're dormant they're buried in the sand with weeds trash and all kinds of things they will never come back to life some tracks art doomed forever
