    After flowing the silicone. I would apply a slight vacuum to the interior while it cured.. That will draw the sealant into the leak area. I have done this with fuel tank leaks around the electrical connectors using just the engine vacuum.

    A module for a headlight. Nuts!

      Those TMS modules are a common failure from water intrusion.
      They drive the servo motors for levelling (and beam steering on adaptive models)
      They're about £400+vat UK, but aftermarket units about a tenth of that.

    • @Peter_Riis_DK
      @Peter_Riis_DK 7 годин тому +1

      Nope. It actually was a good idea when it was first suggested. The idea was, that you could control anything on the car with a ring of three wires; power, two signal wires and a ground connection. The prerequisite of course was standardization making these modules inexpensive.
      However every car manufacturer makes their own "shit" which makes it bloody pricy - and there's your problem.

      @@Peter_Riis_DK Nope... it was never a good idea.
      For lights, you should only have the battery, fuse, switch, wires, and the light...
      If a wire or connector gets damaged or fails, you could easily rewire it... with a module, you might be out of commission for a while and may not be able to repair it and reprogram the module yourself.

      And how many thick wires would you have to route from the driver's door to control four windows, right and left mirror, mirror heat, mirror indicator, locks, and rear gate?
      An with modern headlights you'd have to have electronics there anyway.
      And most people today don't know how to even replace a light bulb. So... 😉

      Looks to me like not enough smoke output. It would be hard to spot, especially if troubleshooting outside. As a DIY, I'm also not fond of built-in batteries. Too much trouble to maintain the charge so I don't kill the batteries from neglect. I do like that it's portable and doesn't need shop air.

    I had the same issue with a tail light. I figured out where the water was getting in. After drying it out and cleaning it, I pulled a small vacuum in the tail light assembly and then let the vacuum pull some super glue in to the leak. Worked like a charm.

    Moisture and BMW headlights go together like 2.0L VW/AUDI TFSI engines and camshaft correlation codes. F10 5 series are THE WORST about this.

    Sometimes the headlights are inside dusty. Without dismantling it, you can't get to it from the outside. In such a case, I remove the bulbs and xenon bulbs and then fill in a glass of isopropanol and shake the headlight. Then pour out isopropanol.
    This removes about 90% of the dust. And the remaining isopropanol evaporates quickly.

    Condensation in headlights in BMWs with active headlights is a known issue. Typically, you can resolve it by replacing the O-rings on the access ports, which should last for another 5 to 10 years. To dry out the housing, use a hairdryer for about an hour sending dry air thru the the access ports. O-rings are available from vendors such as ECS or FCPro. The O-Rings can be replaced with out removing the product. Likely the customer will return.

      Nothing wrong with the old ones but they don't perform as well as he newer ones, I drive 2 cars back to back with old and new headlight and the difference is huge . Newer headlamps offer some neat perks, better lighting and visibility, less power consumption, they follow the directions of steering, they adjust heights based on road surface and lower when they detect an oncoming car so you don't blind oncoming traffic, some of them you can even keep your high beam following other cars and it won't blind them since it detects the car in front of you and will turn down the section if the light where the car is in front of you...but the down side is it will cost an arm and leg if you need to replace the whole housing...

    Repaired alot of leaking devices some under steam pressure on commercial steam cabinets and ovens . We find sikaflex is superior to just about anything else on the market it's difficult to run it on smoothly and takes longer to cure using moisture rather than air for curing but seals and lasts with non corrosive results on metal . Silicone is relegated to sealing surfaces what are visible externally and not under any kind of pressure but need a high quality finish like tiles .

    We just use another battery in a cabinet the Leak Tamer sets on with wheels to roll around the shop with all the adapters under it in the same small cabinet. When looking for hard to find small leaks on EVAP systems you need all the smoke you can get.

      Vacuum has to be pulled pretty low to boil off water. But those lens might be able to handle 14 pounds per square inch.

    Very interesting, if unusual, video, Ivan! That little smoke machine is impressive! I only have a doubt about the quantity of smoke, if you need an EVAP test - is it enough?
    Water is very annoying in any headlight, but on one crammed with electronics, it's a big problem. I've solved a couple with a vacuum cleaner sucking air from inside, with a flexible tube, through the lamp holder - your solution is less noisy 🙂

    From the video, I have to call into question if that tiny box could produce enough smoke or air volume to find a leak in a vehicle’s emissions systems or intake system.

  • @satamanschmidt3428
    @satamanschmidt3428 3 години тому

    Hi Ivan, That little machine seems really loud to me when in smoke mode. Why was it quiet in air delivery mode but made so much noise in smoke mode. I also didn't like that the unit used internal/proprietary batteries. Which will eventually not take a charge. Hopefully Milwaukee or DeWalt will make one for their M12 or M18 units.

    I read a lot of reviews on Amazon smoke machines and too many of them worked once and never worked again so I too chicken to buy one and I need one or else hire someone to find my leak on my Jeep. I looked at so many of them I don't know if I read up about this one. I suppose a laser pointer would fine the smoke faster ???

    • @blindabinda1234

      Depending where you are looking for the leak you can use starting fluid or gas and gently spray around vacuum lines and such to find a leak. If you hear the idle change then you know you're close. You can make smoke machines pretty cheaply also.

    I can tell you from experience right now, if someone were to buy that complete headlight assembly from the dealer, including programing, you could purchase a fairly decent used car for that same money. Those headlights are insanely expensive!
