How can you help to prevent the spread of invasive species?
Choose native plants for your landscapes, yards, and gardens!
Planting non-native is inherently a gamble. It’s difficult to predict, especially in a rapidly changing climate, how a non-native species will behave over time. Many plants we didn’t consider invasive for many decades, eventually begin spreading into natural areas.
Plants don’t come alone. Every plant you introduce to your yard brings a host of other organisms along with it; fungi, bacteria, pests, and diseases can also become invasive and harmful. Non-native plants can also introduce invasive pests and diseases.
Native plants are functioning members of our ecosystems and will help to restore your yard to provide the ecosystem services we all rely on. Native plants are also beautiful and birds, butterflies, bees, and other wildlife depend on them. It’s a joy to watch that life return.
