Thanks a bunch for this one, Mel. I've been watching videos from dozens of eBay sellers, some of them pretty big in the eBay space, and yet no one else has ever explained Yahoo/Google SEO before. You rock! Recently my wife who is just learning (like me) told me about a UA-cam eBay-er who was looking up comps on eBay with his phone at a yard sale by means of their UPC bar code. Didn't sound right to me, then I back-tracked and saw what was really happening. An app on his phone was reading the bard code and looking up the item on Google, which then showed the item listed on eBay. I making a wild guess that many eBay-er's arent even aware of how important Google is to their sales.
Dave, thank you for the feedback! I really appreciate it. Ranking on other search engines is so important. People have said in these comments 40% of their clicks are external! Thats huge numbers and something we don't want to be missing out on. I hope this information can help people and also remind seasoned sellers to not get lazy and miss the opportunity of ranking higher in searches outside of eBay. I suspect some categories are even more searched in google than others.
I run the barcodes through the eBay and Amazon apps on my phone. Don't really care what it is if it's not selling...if it is, that's when I do a little more research on the item in Google.

eBay is happy for you to have the black background, so your stuff will still sell but Google and external sites do prefer a clean white one. It will depend on what you sell and how much external links play a part in your sales. :)
@@backfromburnout It certainty cant hurt to try, 90% of my sales are video games and I'm doing around 120 Sales a month. Be interesting to see if a white Corflute background makes a difference

Keep it up Javi, with 10 item's your store is still only small and you will need more items listed to bring in those regular sales. But listing your items with great SEO right from the start is the perfect way to build a great eBay store! Thanks for asking a great question and good luck!
I'm so glad it was helpful. eBay won't mind the coloured drop, a lot of eBay sellers are using grey drops at the moment but it is Google that will prefer the white drop.
I've recently been looking into Google Analytics and how to implement it, but I realized that it's already integrated with eBay, so there's no need for me to do anything further. Your videos on eBay sales seem very useful. I'm now interested in checking out your other videos as well. Since eBay originated in the United States, I'm particularly interested in videos by people who are active there. Thank you very much.
It will go up and down with the eBay roller coaster and some items will be more searched then others but definitely keep an eye on the current graph and current listings you’re doing. Some people will have a higher % as the items they sell are searched more often. As long as your aware of how much external traffic comes from page views so you can optimize listings to get those listings into the search engine is the main thing.

Thanks for the tips Mel! Recently, I've been looking at my titles as some are short and I think I need to put some more words. I also noticed that the items I put on as featured items in my store also help especially if I want to dispose old stock. Out of the 5, I sold 4 within the month.
Thats a great tip! I don't use the categories or featured stock in my store and I need to try harder with that. It's been on my mind a while to get all that sorted and updated. If you have space in your titles I encourage you to fill it with keywords. Not fluff words but strong keywords people will search. Thank you for sharing your tips and for watching!

Thanks for the video. I had no idea that my stuff ever showed up on Google etc!...so I looked and I am just under 10% of my 1500 views came from external sites. But I have allot of ads that I need to change because I never used a white background and some BOLD lettering in the ad title too. Lol. .... I will let you know how it works.
I hope it gave you some tips and you can get those external clicks up a little higher. Work on it a couple of months and then see if you see an improvement :)

I haven’t used promoted listings as I’m unsure as to how to set these up and how much to spend and the percentage to use. It’s all a bit confusing. Wow what a truly informative video! So much I didn’t know. Did not even know about external clicks or order of title etc so I am going to check mine now. One question, where is the EBay tool for whitening photos?
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the feedback and letting me know. When you upload the photos underneath each photo will be some little tools to help brighten them etc. Have a little toggle and try them out. I don't think they are nearly as good as the editing app like Bazzart but they still might give your photos that bit of a boost. Bazzart will completely remove your background and make it white so it looks very professional.
Hi Mel, I am at 41.7% for September. I think this number would vary depending on the type of product that you sell as well. If for instance you are selling into a very competitive niche such as books or DVD's the amount of clicks you get from eBay is lower because most people would sort from lowest price to highest. So consequently, if you are not one of the lowest prices then your listing is below the fold and probably not getting clicks through eBay.
Agree. I definitely think some categories will get more external views depending on the items in your store. Collectables I’m sure get great views on other search engines. Some people in the comments and my messages have got really high external click rates which shows just how important it is to optimise listings for the search engines.
@@backfromburnout How do you know what your external click rates are, or ebay click rates, for that matter? I didn't know there was a way to determine this.
Excellent information, my store is at about 10-12% of views from external sources, based on how often I convert a page view into a sale, I would be crazy to ignore your awesome advice. I will be updating titles and photos!
Interesting, I had never looked at where my views were coming from, and they are around 50/50. I do use capitals for some words in my title, undecided whether to change that. Also not sure if you mentioned but it's also important to use every character space in your title, also to use all 12 photos ... This is your real estate.
50% is great and it means whatever your selling is highly searchable in other search engines. It’s good to fill up the entire title line with extra keywords as long as they are not “fluff” words. I’m in the process of removing all the words “free shipping” in mine and fixing errors my Virtual Assistant made. I’ll be interested to look again in another month to see if page views increase with changes I’m making.
The samples Mel suggested we screensave all have capitals. I think capitalizing words is fine. I think what they don’t like is when people use ALL CAPS in their listing.
But that’s great you know now and you can work on fixing that! We don’t want to miss out on sales when there are simple steps to getting those extra page views. :)
Hope that gave you some tips, getting those external views is so important to increase eBay page views and it’s such a waste if your missing out on the opportunity to be ranked on search engines like Google.
Binge watching your vids for my “fresh start” in 2022… Quick question: You mention that Google doesn’t like capitalisation in the titles (that’s great of them hey) however the example template (WHICH IS EXCELLENT BTW THANK YOU) is full of capitalisation. The majority of listings I browse through on EBay have capitalisation - it looks great too, breaks it up a bit, emphasises Important Keywords without wasting space with commas or full stops etc. Its just easier to read basically. I’m wondering which is more important to Capital or Not to Capital? Your take on this these days Mel? Thank you xx
I don’t use any capitalisation in any of my listings. Except the first letter of each word. I don’t think eBay minds full capitalisation but it’s google that doesn’t like it. I want to do anything I can to get my listings shown in front of an external audience. I suspect the chart was just using it for bold to made it easy to read. X
So, kinda gray is ok? Some of those are kind of Gray in the Google list that was shown in the video. If my existing listing pictures are not square, is there a way to make them square without retaking pictures?
very interesting, I usually wipe the word men's or women's from my titles because I always thought that the if item (if gender specific) is in the proper category like men's dress shirts or women's shorts there was no need to add it to the title. Ive never listed thinking about outside search engines. Thank you!!! your video is very enlightening.
Thanks Rocky! You're right, for the actual eBay listing men's or women's wont matter as much but when it's required on outside search engines we need to change tactics. Some people in the comments have noted they have 40% external views which is a lot of clicks coming from outside search engines so we can't dismiss them. Thanks for watching and the feedback!
Absolutely brilliant video Mel! I often get newbie eBay buyers and a few have told me that they just found my item and store via a Google search so they quickly joined up as a member or I think they can purchase as a guest too..my external site percentage is sitting on 44.8%.

Bazaart is a really simple and great app for removing backgrounds and making them white and it’s available on iPhone and Android. These simple tools can make photos look really quite professional as well. Thanks for watching!

Yes, it's a shame you can only see it with a store. I didn't realise it was only for store holders. Oh yes, eBay will still want all listings going into external searches as that brings traffic to the eBay website.

Thank you for the feedback. I only have it on a 1% level and it's because I have a little echo in the shed so am trying to minimise that tinny sound if you know what I mean. But I will note the feedback and see how the next few videos sound. It would save me a lot of time not having to always find the right music ha ha
You mentioned that google doesn't like capitalization of words in their title search, yet, I just did a quick look-see of dozens of book titles on ebay and only two didn't capitalize any words in the title, and they just don't look right. LOL There were far more who capitalized EVERY letter in the titles, which I find obnoxious. Everyone I've watched who talked about creating titles say you should capitalize every word in the title. If google doesn't like capitalization, you think ebay would have said something about it somewhere along the line.

My camera picks up a white background as blue for some reason plus it won't give a good image of a white item on a white background. And for an added bonus my phone is WAY too old to use for a phone much less anything much. lol So I switched to doing everything on black background instead. I do crop off as much of it as I can though. Doesn't seem to have hurt my click through rate.
Sometimes we have to just use what we have and any listings is better then none :) The Bazaart app though is great for completely replacing backgrounds to white. If you can focus on your title and item specifics it will really help though.
Yes, absolutely. Promoting even 1% will help. I am not sure about the new feature though which is a pay by click promotion. I don't Think I will be trying that as I think it could get very costly.

Wow what a truly informative video! So much I didn’t know. Did not even know about external clicks or order of title etc so I am going to check mine now. One question, where is the EBay tool for whitening photos?
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the feedback and letting me know. When you upload the photos underneath each photo will be some little tools to help brighten them etc. Have a little toggle and try them out. I don't think they are nearly as good as the editing app like Bazzart but they still might give your photos that bit of a boost. Bazzart will completely remove your background and make it white so it looks very professional.
Hi Mel, I am at 41.7% for September. I think this number would vary depending on the type of product that you sell as well. If for instance you are selling into a very competitive niche such as books or DVD's the amount of clicks you get from eBay is lower because most people would sort from lowest price to highest. So consequently, if you are not one of the lowest prices then your listing is below the fold and probably not getting clicks through eBay.
Agree. I definitely think some categories will get more external views depending on the items in your store. Collectables I’m sure get great views on other search engines. Some people in the comments and my messages have got really high external click rates which shows just how important it is to optimise listings for the search engines.
@@backfromburnout How do you know what your external click rates are, or ebay click rates, for that matter? I didn't know there was a way to determine this.
Excellent information, my store is at about 10-12% of views from external sources, based on how often I convert a page view into a sale, I would be crazy to ignore your awesome advice. I will be updating titles and photos!

Interesting, I had never looked at where my views were coming from, and they are around 50/50. I do use capitals for some words in my title, undecided whether to change that.
Also not sure if you mentioned but it's also important to use every character space in your title, also to use all 12 photos ... This is your real estate.
50% is great and it means whatever your selling is highly searchable in other search engines. It’s good to fill up the entire title line with extra keywords as long as they are not “fluff” words. I’m in the process of removing all the words “free shipping” in mine and fixing errors my Virtual Assistant made. I’ll be interested to look again in another month to see if page views increase with changes I’m making.
The samples Mel suggested we screensave all have capitals. I think capitalizing words is fine. I think what they don’t like is when people use ALL CAPS in their listing.
Haha, my percentage for Ebay is much lower than external traffic! I wonder why, I only have a few promotions.

Hope that gave you some tips, getting those external views is so important to increase eBay page views and it’s such a waste if your missing out on the opportunity to be ranked on search engines like Google.
Binge watching your vids for my “fresh start” in 2022… Quick question: You mention that Google doesn’t like capitalisation in the titles (that’s great of them hey) however the example template (WHICH IS EXCELLENT BTW THANK YOU) is full of capitalisation. The majority of listings I browse through on EBay have capitalisation - it looks great too, breaks it up a bit, emphasises Important Keywords without wasting space with commas or full stops etc. Its just easier to read basically. I’m wondering which is more important to Capital or Not to Capital? Your take on this these days Mel? Thank you xx
I don’t use any capitalisation in any of my listings. Except the first letter of each word. I don’t think eBay minds full capitalisation but it’s google that doesn’t like it. I want to do anything I can to get my listings shown in front of an external audience. I suspect the chart was just using it for bold to made it easy to read. X
So, kinda gray is ok? Some of those are kind of Gray in the Google list that was shown in the video.
If my existing listing pictures are not square, is there a way to make them square without retaking pictures?
very interesting, I usually wipe the word men's or women's from my titles because I always thought that the if item (if gender specific) is in the proper category like men's dress shirts or women's shorts there was no need to add it to the title. Ive never listed thinking about outside search engines. Thank you!!! your video is very enlightening.
Thanks Rocky! You're right, for the actual eBay listing men's or women's wont matter as much but when it's required on outside search engines we need to change tactics. Some people in the comments have noted they have 40% external views which is a lot of clicks coming from outside search engines so we can't dismiss them. Thanks for watching and the feedback!
Absolutely brilliant video Mel! I often get newbie eBay buyers and a few have told me that they just found my item and store via a Google search so they quickly joined up as a member or I think they can purchase as a guest too..my external site percentage is sitting on 44.8%.

Yes, it's a shame you can only see it with a store. I didn't realise it was only for store holders. Oh yes, eBay will still want all listings going into external searches as that brings traffic to the eBay website.
Performance -> Traffic should be available to non-store accounts. I can see it and I don't have a store.

Thank you for the feedback. I only have it on a 1% level and it's because I have a little echo in the shed so am trying to minimise that tinny sound if you know what I mean. But I will note the feedback and see how the next few videos sound. It would save me a lot of time not having to always find the right music ha ha
You mentioned that google doesn't like capitalization of words in their title search, yet, I just did a quick look-see of dozens of book titles on ebay and only two didn't capitalize any words in the title, and they just don't look right. LOL There were far more who capitalized EVERY letter in the titles, which I find obnoxious. Everyone I've watched who talked about creating titles say you should capitalize every word in the title. If google doesn't like capitalization, you think ebay would have said something about it somewhere along the line.

I calculated my per page views for external views is 20% also. Given a month's period of time.
So do you start your titles with the word. BOOK or with the Title of the book.

My camera picks up a white background as blue for some reason plus it won't give a good image of a white item on a white background. And for an added bonus my phone is WAY too old to use for a phone much less anything much. lol So I switched to doing everything on black background instead. I do crop off as much of it as I can though. Doesn't seem to have hurt my click through rate.
Sometimes we have to just use what we have and any listings is better then none :) The Bazaart app though is great for completely replacing backgrounds to white. If you can focus on your title and item specifics it will really help though.
I'm getting notifications on items that are not bundled that is asking me for the bundle description. So frustrating!

Yes, absolutely. Promoting even 1% will help. I am not sure about the new feature though which is a pay by click promotion. I don't Think I will be trying that as I think it could get very costly.
