Thanks for the video Dave! I ordered a set and they work great. I have an old brass Depth Adjustment Knob I use to snug up against the plane's knob and try to only mangle the old knob while removing the stud. This is so much easier with these two nuts and using a wrench rather than vice grips on the old mangled knob. This will make cleaning the threads much easier and will defiantly be in my kit for refurbishing old Stanley planes from now on. Thanks again for making us aware of these.

That makes my day, anytime I find something like this I’ll make a video…glad they worked great for you.

Thanks for the video. May want to get a 9/32-24 left hand tap and die if one restores many planes. Can find the taps and dies on either ebay or Amazon. Could buy two standard taps and grind the end of one to make a bottoming tap. The die could be used to clean up the treads of the stud.

    Nice video 👍🏻.
Did you make the nuts yourself or do you have a link for the manufacturer?

Hey Dave, great video! I was wondering if you have any thoughts on "Auto-Set" planes? I've been checking out the Sargent VBM 700 series planes lately.

I’ve never fooled around with a Sargent Auto-Set, looks like I may have to get one…..,

@@DaveCorinth Don't worry. I, too, use the "I've never used one of those. Therefore, I should definitely buy it" approach, haha. Next on my list is a Stanley No. 7!

Thanks. Your thoughts on choosing brass vrs steel nuts. Maybe a set of each?

I have a set of each, maybe the brass would seat a little better since it’s softer, but I’ve used both and they both work fine.

I am having the opposite problem to the usual stuck post: one that works it way out as the plane is used and adjusted. Anyone have any thoughts? I am loathe to put a drop of blue Loctite on it and turn the problem in the other direction.😊

Have you tried using two adjustment nuts to tighten the stud down? I don’t see the harm in using loctite….

I use that method as well mostly to avoid damage to the threads by tightening it without a tool. I find when the thread is worn the Loctite will keep it from rocking, too.

Makes me wonder how and when they jigged and drilled, tapped, and threaded in the stud. Maybe they did it before painting so they could easily toss it in the recast bin. Great instruction as always. Keep it coming when you can manage. Would enjoy some type-study information.
Is there something special about these nuts specific to jamming? I assume any nuts can be used. I’ll read kgish’s description to see what he says.
Lately I keep scratching my head about an 18 and 19. I had a 18 I loved for its grey patina and wonderful function and feel. I picked up a 19 on eBay last week for cheap. It is just under 7 inches but my 18 is an easy 6.5 inches. Wondering if that is normal for people to say when they can vary dramatically.

I’m pretty sure Stanley japanned the bodies and frogs first, then did the machining. On a lot of frogs you can still see some japanning on the face where it was machined. As for will any nut do the trick? No, these are an odd size and they are left handed threads that you wouldn’t be able to pick up at any hardware store. As for the 18 & 19 block planes, I think the only way to tell them apart is by the length since they don’t have 18 or 19 cast or stamped anywhere on the body. I’ve had several 18’s and 19’s and hadn’t noticed a variation is the sizes.

Do you happen to have a link for the seller on eBay? I had a bit of a struggle using the double brass knob method.
