Story is obviously key - and how-to vids are have engagement built in to them - but the cinematography really helps keep our interest with this. I’d have to imagine people who like bikes would REALLY like this style of video!
I was a bit doubtful with a SRAM derailleur after reading several comments about compatibility on the web. I took the plunge with the SRAM X1 11speed derailleur and it works perfectly after setting up limits and sizing chain. I made chain parallel on the smallest cog by adjusting the actuation screw, but ensuring the chain tension wasn’t right to end of limit to keep tension. No interference on jockey wheels or on 50t cog. This is perfect. My bike is a 2017 Trek Xcaliber 8. Chain ring is 40t. Chain is KMC EPT 11speed E11 118 link (1 x link removed to suit my set up). My bike is converted with Bafang BBS02B 750w motor. Now awesome with the 11x 50 cassette. Thank you Jan for a great video and suggestions in the comments! :)
I have been thinking of updating my ancient GT RTS to 1x10, and this video pretty much showed me exactly what I needed to know. Thanks for posting a direct, easy to understand video. I have been running Sun Race stuff for years and I think I will continue to do so.
I loved my GT bikes! I had an RTS and my much loved Zaskar.. good luck with the upgrade. One thing I didn’t mention is you’ll need a new chain, too. Have fun!
For 1x10 the best complete is XT m780 shifter with XT m8000 GS rear derailer and SunRace MX3 11-46t cassette. 11 speed capacity in 10 speed durability!
Another high quality video, Jan! So well done - I watched the whole thing and while I would never do more to my own bike than change a flat or put the chain back on, I was completely engaged the entire time. Love the music accompanying your ride!
You may think about updating this video, I've installed (along with many others) a Sunrace 11-50 cassette on my 11 speed using the M8000 gs (medium cage) XT rear mech and had no issue. All that had to be done was adjust the B screw in almost all the way. If you look on Shimanos website the GS medium cage is rated for a 1X setup 46 tooth chain ring where as the SGS long cage is rated for a 2X set up.
@@AdventureMuse... Yes, I installed it on a Pivot Switchblade. I would suggest for anyone doing this to adjust their B screw in all the way so it clears the 50 ring. After the cassette is installed adjust the B screw back out to the proper clearances. In my case there was no other adjustments necessary, works awesome. I went this route because everywhere I researched this, people were having the best luck with the medium cage (M8000 GS), in fact there's a lengthy article online where they tested the cassette on a few bikes with long and short cages as well as different manufacturers derailleurs. The Shimano medium cage worked the best for them. If you'd like I can get on my laptop, dig through the history and link the article for you. Let me know.
I also installed on a Shimano XT M8000 GS medium cage derailleur. Full suspension too. No issues at all. Just a few turns of the B screw and still have screw threads showing which would allow even more adjustment. Shifts like butter.
Bit of a no-brainer for 1x systems. 2x you have to consider that there's a lot more slack in the chain that has to be managed by the rear derailleur when you're riding in the small ring up front & somewhere mid-cassette at the rear. I'm riding 2x11 m8000 XT & I want to go to the biggest recommended cassette at the rear, & increase by 2 teeth both my chainrings. This way I get higher high gears (more top end speed!) & lower low gears (easier climbing). Hopefully it won't stretch out the ratios mid-cassette too much & spoil the cadence when I'm cruising on tarmac.
I've been riding MTBs since the mid 90's, one thing I've learned is to change my chains OFTEN. Chains are relatively cheap compared to cassettes & chainrings. I've gone years without needing to change a cassette..1000s and 1000s of offroad miles..
You can probably get away with a short cage derailleur, with some caveats. I have a medium cage SLX M7000 derailleur and just installed this cassette around a month ago. Sadly my local bike shop didn't warn me or take in consideration the length of the derailleur cage and since I bought it, we had to think in some workarounds to make it work properly. If you're interested on the details keep reading the text wall below as I'm being detailed as hell, you've been warned 😂 At first it was making all the shifts from the smallest to biggest cogs, but shifting was inconsistent: you had to either pull the lever further from the shifting position to help the cassette go to a bigger cog, or adjust it perfectly but live with very high noises coming from the chain rubbing against the next cog from the middle up to the biggest 4 cogs. The derailleur itself was under more tension than average, but it was operational. Then, we added a goat link (those things they put between the derailleur hanger and the derailleur itself to put the derailleur in a lower position) and the whole system changed: the derailleur body angle was more "relaxed" when shifting to the 50T cog, the cable and derailleur were under less lot tension and you could actually feel it from the shifter (previously the pulling was harder and you could feel the actual resistance on the cable) and shifting became quieter and faster both up and down the cassette, but the chain was now so long that even with the clutch on, it was bouncing all over the place when it was on the smallest cog even while pedaling and passing over small bumps, so we had to remove a link form the chain, which makes it a little tight now but surely keeps the chain in place in all of the gears 😆 The only issue I'm having right now is shifting when going from 28T to 32T cog, to make it shift fast and well, you need a higher cadence than all the other gears, all the other gears work fast and quiet both up and down though. You can still shift when you're pedaling slow, but you need to help it moving the lever further from the shift position, or go up two sprockets and going back one. I'll try better indexing, but I think further adjustment will cause either noise on the next bigger cogs from the chain rubbing against the next cog, or slower shifting when going from the biggest to the smallest cogs. To wrap it up, you can indeed use a short cage derailleur if you have one, but you have pros and cons. The good thing is you can get a cassette with better gear spacing than what Shimano offers for 1x in the M7000/8000/9000 generation (that 37T -> 46T jump is crazy lol) better rage (11-46 vs 11-50 for better climbing) higher speeds (you can install a 32T front chainring instead of 30T because of the 50T) and it looks way better 😎. The cons are that first, you're limited with your chain options: my chain right now is 120 links long and I wouldn't make it shorter because it will cause the derailleur to be in a highly stressed position on the 50T cog, so you either buy a SRAM 11 speed chain which has enough links, or you have to buy 2 chains once in a while to keep adding the rest of the links, as most of the 11 speed chains come out of the box with 116 or 118 links, but haven't seen any other than SRAM with 120 links out of the box. You may also have a shifting problem between 28 to 32T cogs and that may be because of the position itself of the derailleur because of the goat link, incompatibility issues between the whole SRAM / SunRace / Shimano combo, or maybe I just have a faulty cassette. There's an upgraded version of this cassette, the CSMX80, which weights less and may fix the shifting issue, but I'm yet to try one out so I don't know for sure. The cassette it is also a bit louder than Shimano when moving multiple gears from the middle to the biggest ones, but that's a minor and it's not loud enough to be annoying.
Thanks, Juan for the explanation. I'm sure that will help others. I probably didn't say it, but we just installed the CSMX80, but as I've mentioned, we used a long cage derailleur to avoid the issues we were running into. Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy trails.
all you need is to lengthen yr chain and use a roadlink extender to bring your derailleur down, unless yr rear derailleur is super short then probably need new one longer.
I have the same setup on one of my bikes, only for rear mech I used Box Two Long Cage. cranks are shimano slx 30t and shifter is box two as well - drive train works awesome, shift crisp no issues at all....
You should try using it with 12T Narrow-Wide Pulleys (metal bearing) + RD Extender (Wolftooth Goatlink 11), or may be with 12 speed chain too and see the difference. * My bike setup is 11-50T cassete with Shimano RD-M7000-11-GS and 34T Chainring.

I got it to shift to every gear high to low, low to high and I ended up putting back on my med derailleur shadow xt the only thing I did was adjust the clutch screw out a bit ...and its seems to be on point! We'll see how it goes when am out on those trails......🥴
Awesome video, thanks. Tip on filming your rides, mount your GoPro upside down on your chest mount and you will get a bit better point of view for your footage. It will give an above the handlebars view of the trail ahead versus below the bars as now. Again great work!
Thanks for watching! Really appreciate it. That’s usually how I have my GP... by the looks of that clip around 6:32 I think I have the GP on super wide...It’s always a guessing game where to point it. 😆
That trail looks amazing! Too bad Texas is too flat haha. I miss mountains. This video reminded me when I was working on motorbikes and had to replace flywheels. It was a similar case that required special tools except there were no gear teeth to hold the flywheel. Such a pain with those old bikes haha.
Thanks Dan! That's one of my favorite trails on my commute to work. Those tools were new to me, too. I learned so much that day with Chuck. He is a wealth of bike knowledge.
What always seems to be missing from these types of videos is the host saying how it affected their ride! I see you have a nice ride video at the end, so what were your thoughts after the upgrade ? Did you like it? Hate it? Improved the ride? Altered your watts? How did it affect your PFT?
I love it. This is my second sunrace and it's still going strong, shifts well. I've done I think 3 videos on this product and my experience. Maybe this is what you're looking for? ua-cam.com/video/u6rwi-SFpoY/v-deo.html
Hi, I have a Sunrace 11-51 with a standard freehub body, got SLX on other components, so I wanted to upgrade the cassette to a shimano slx 10-51, dereilleur is also slx, chaing ring is fsa. since slx shimano is microspline, what do i have to change?
I have the same cog been riding on it for about 2 1/2 years how often do you need to change it out, mine will not shift to the 3rd low gear. Its frustrating me, but when I had a med cage it worked perfectly any advice would be great.
@@AdventureMuse thanks for the quick response! But i asked because i saw the link before but it takes me to an Sram chain (114 or 120 links) and the derailleur is shimano. So, can you use an Sram chain on shimano derailleur? And if so, i believe then you are using the 120 link sram chain? Thanks!
Nice video. How did you adjust the derailleur with out the fancy red plastic piece SRAM provides with their cassettes? I bought a Sunrace cassette and I’m trying to figure it out. Thanks!
Hi, finally got the M8000 and it works with my 10 speed 50 tooth! Just a question, are you a hundred percent sure the GS version doesn't work? I'm on a 26er and the SGS cage is only about 3 inches off the ground sometimes! Thanks
Congratulations!! I have this set up on a 27.5 bike and we needed more travel as you can probably see in the video. Others in the comments said the SG worked with an additional part. I think it just depends on your set up. I have 140mm of travel, which also makes a difference. I'll measure how far mine is off the ground and post back.
I was close to buy that same fram for about 400 pounds. I finally rejected because it was too much scrached on the bottoms. couple days later I got a alu frame all new with steam rear shock and pike fork etc for 450 so super bargain. Anyways, I ll go for the same rear drive train.
Awesome video! The audio is really good in this video. Lav mics? Interestingly, I recently posted a video on changing a cassette on my TT bike in my triathlon channel. This is really fantastic and I hope that it helps get more people working on bikes! 👌
Thanks so much, Matt! I used the Rode wireless go for all audio up to around 1:42, then the mic went rogue and was awful. I had the Boya MM1 on the hand-held camera so I was able to capture audio. Alway glad to have two sources! Your footage is amazing and I just watched your cassette video. Really well done.

@@AdventureMuse Thanks, I’m using the long cage (SGS) as well. The wheel size shouldn’t matter because it’s a radius measured from the axle Center. I’m going to try an extender.
I just bought the same bike as you...well the black frame color way and I want to convert to a 1x. This is my first full suspension mtb and I’m torn as to whether I do 1x11 via shimano m5100 groupset or do 1x12 via sunrace csmz903. Do you think you’ll ever go to 1x12?
@@AdventureMuse That's the dilemma I'm in hehe. I worry that the 1x12 Sunrace 11-51 which fits HG might not perform as well as 1x11 Shimano M5100 since it's all Shimano. I do think I am going to go XT shifter regardless of which cassette I decide because I heard that's the way to go.
Does the shimano 12 speed fit in to The Woolf tooth chainring ? Or what chain do you use? I'm looking to put this casstte in my bike . Any help would be great :) I have the slx m7100 deraulier , slx shifter sm 7100 , 12 speed cassette sunrace but the chain I dont know which one ,sram or shimano.
@@AdventureMuse I got it working. Swapped out the shifter cable, took my time and played around with the B-Screw. I field tested the setup on Maple Springs to Motorway and it worked like a charm. Good advise and good tutorial. I had no idea why the bikeshop could not do it. Go figure.
How did you get the M8000 to accept a 50T cassette? Shimano specs say it can only go to 46T. Did you modify the derailleur, or are the specs just more conservative than reality?
It might work because it's a 1x & she has a small ring up front. Bear in mind that if you run a much larger front ring in a 1x (unlikely) or a 2x where your larger front ring might be 36 or 38t (more likely) that might introduce problems. The chain will necessarily be longer because it is sized to orbit the largest cog front & rear at the same time (even though you'd never ride it like that!) & perhaps the extra slack in the chain would be too much for the derailleur to take up if you were riding small ring up front & somewhere mid-cassette at the back. People put woolftooth links in (extends the mount for the rear mech) to make stuff like this work. Also, Shimano probably is being conservative based on what the forums say. Tl;dr Probably fine if you're 1x. If you're 2x, think about it, test it well in the workstand before you ride it!
I'm not sure since you're putting a 10-speed cassette on with a 9-speed derailleur. It may work as a 9 speed, but it also might skip. Did you actually install it? If so, what's the experience you're having?
@@AdventureMuse really it skips (ring by ring) but i also saw a video from a guy that he make that conversion 9 speed dellaurier with 10 speed cassette but in 11-36
Not completely sure if it will but it doesn’t look that much bigger than the sunrace. My frame is 27.5 medium - you might need the extension if you have a 29
That's awesome. I think it depends on the amount of travel, bike size, etc. We couldn't get it to work on mine and the long cage fixed the problem. It's still going strong. after many miles.
@@AdventureMuse im using it on a hardtail and its tight, i also have it-on a full sus and it had alot more clearance. Long cage would be easiest but medium cage i find is less chain slap. But just my thoughts , ill always try find a way to make things work
I just got 11-50; and it works with medium cage xt m8000. I think it says u need longer b-tension screw but I worked with stock screw. I had to lengthen the chain since I crank b-tension screw fair amount. But in the end it all worked out. FYI I have 30t chain ring 435mm chainstay and boost 148 rear with boost slx crank. Just wanted to share in case someone else needed this info.
Yes! I had already swapped out the chain... I failed to call it out in the video, but I've mentioned it in the comments. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I’m surprised those Sunrace cassettes just seem to last & last.... well I know what cassette I’ll be getting next to replace my current cassette thanks for the upload 🔥✊ 116 link chain? It’s always good to replace cassette & chain at the same time to extend the life of both.
I really should have replaced my chain much sooner before to much wear, but I didn’t. We tried to just replace the chain, but it was skipping like crazy so I did replace the cassette. The Chain was new, but I should have mentioned that in the video. I did make note of that in the comments. It’s a solid cassette. Thanks for the comment! : )
If that cassette only lasted a year ... even if you did 3,000 miles .in a year . I normally do 11,500 .. Nothing worse wasting money on a product that doesn't last a year ,,,, Zero longlivity ..
I already have a long cage shimano Alivio 9 speed and I want to stay within the 9 speed family, but I want this range. Do you think my derailleur with a goat link 11 would fit the capacity of the large cog cassette?
I have 2 sunrace cassettes i treat them bad like real bad, and they have barley any damage on them. Using they has taught me not to be a brand tart :)
Right?! They work well and can take a beating!
Sunrace cassettes are the shit, can't complain, I've used a few now

I love it. This is my second sunrace and it's still going strong, shifts well. I've done I think 3 videos on this product and my experience. Maybe this is what you're looking for? ua-cam.com/video/u6rwi-SFpoY/v-deo.html
Hi, I have a Sunrace 11-51 with a standard freehub body, got SLX on other components, so I wanted to upgrade the cassette to a shimano slx 10-51, dereilleur is also slx, chaing ring is fsa. since slx shimano is microspline, what do i have to change?
this is great! really enjoyed watching, cant wait to see more form you! keep them coming :)
Thanks so much for the kind words and encouragement!
I have the same cog been riding on it for about 2 1/2 years how often do you need to change it out, mine will not shift to the 3rd low gear. Its frustrating me, but when I had a med cage it worked perfectly any advice would be great.
It really depends on how much you ride, and if you change your chain. Have you replaced your chain in 2.5 years?
Thanks for video!, i was wondering, how many chain links you have on your bike 116L?
Hey there I have the 11 speed sram chain, link is in the description
@@AdventureMuse thanks for the quick response! But i asked because i saw the link before but it takes me to an Sram chain (114 or 120 links) and the derailleur is shimano. So, can you use an Sram chain on shimano derailleur? And if so, i believe then you are using the 120 link sram chain? Thanks!
Nice video. How did you adjust the derailleur with out the fancy red plastic piece SRAM provides with their cassettes? I bought a Sunrace cassette and I’m trying to figure it out. Thanks!
Nothing was shown about adjusting the limit screws
I prefer SunRace with Sram Gx, it works perfectly.
You don't need a goatlink to be compatible in 50T plate?
Jerome Yanga no, we didn’t need it. The long case (sgs) seems to solve that need.
Great video. I did the exact same install and it is working great! Have you or anyone here try the EA1 11-51T yet. I know it is only one tooth more.
Thanks Eric. I haven’t tried it.
Can i use my 36t chainring for these 11-50t cassettes? Derailleur is XT.
I am having problems getting mine to work. I have a nine speed Shimano XT derailleur. Which derailleur should I use that is compatible ?
I used an 11 speed. This is what I used. SHIMANO XT RD-M8000 Rear Derailleur: amzn.to/2Hb749g
Agree, perfect video! Is it possible to reuse my existing 36T ring with this cassette?
Cranks Custom SRAM Carbon S-2200, 10-Speed Trail Double, PF30 Spindle, Removable Spider, Length on Size S: 170mm, Others: 175mm
Chainrings 36/22 Tooth
Stud! You should be able to.
sweet ridin skillz... may i ask how long u been riding?
Thanks! I forgot I put a riding clip in this video. I've been riding about 20 years.
Greetings from Cali Colombia South America
Is Sgs u used currently ON your bike now?? IT ‘s compatible with 50t cassete with no other issue? Pls response tnx newbie bike here😊
Yes, the Sunrace is still on this bike and going strong. This bike is a 27.5 full travel bike.
Is this compatible for SLX M1720 RD to 11-50 cassette?
Hello! Do you use a switch with a long or middle foot?
Egor Snopov not sure I completely know what you’re asking - which is my dominate foot? Pedals?
Hello) sorry, Rear Derailleur long cage(SGS), or mid cage(SG)?
Def sgs- it’s a long cage for the travel
Did you have to use a derailleur hanger extension? I've just installed the exact same spec and I'm having a challenge with the two inboard big cogs.
I didn't. I have the long cage derailleur, my bike is 27.5. I have heard here that some use the derailleur hanger.
@@AdventureMuse Thanks, I’m using the long cage (SGS) as well. The wheel size shouldn’t matter because it’s a radius measured from the axle Center. I’m going to try an extender.
Awesome video Jan!! So well done!! So, will you be replacing the next cassette? You seem to know your stuff!
Maybe? But Chuck has all the tools - he does make it look easy. 😄
nice video, good cassette
LVC mtb thanks 😊
I just bought the same bike as you...well the black frame color way and I want to convert to a 1x. This is my first full suspension mtb and I’m torn as to whether I do 1x11 via shimano m5100 groupset or do 1x12 via sunrace csmz903. Do you think you’ll ever go to 1x12?
RJ Abella if you’re buying everything new, you might be able to go with 1x12 make sure your hub will work with it.
The wolf tooth chain ring should be fine if it fits your bike, I would go with Shimano since your Derailleur is Shimano. Good luck.
Thank you for your response , and what chain are you using ? Thank you again .
I got the Sunrace 11-50 and the SGS Long cage but it is not shifting to the 50 any ideas?
29 or 27.5?
@@AdventureMuse 29er!
So sorry, did you get
It working? It could
Be the distance or
Chain length
@@AdventureMuse I got it working. Swapped out the shifter cable, took my time and played around with the B-Screw. I field tested the setup on Maple Springs to Motorway and it worked like a charm. Good advise and good tutorial. I had no idea why the bikeshop could not do it. Go figure.
I just got my sunrace 9s 50T. will hook it up with a 34T.
Congratulations!! Hope you love it!
How did you get the M8000 to accept a 50T cassette? Shimano specs say it can only go to 46T. Did you modify the derailleur, or are the specs just more conservative than reality?
I think they are modest- We didn’t modify it.
@@AdventureMuse ok, thanks
Good morning ..I put a sunrace 11-46 10 speed cassette with rd972 9 speed rear dellaurier LONG CAGE .Is it possible to work?
I'm not sure since you're putting a 10-speed cassette on with a 9-speed derailleur. It may work as a 9 speed, but it also might skip. Did you actually install it? If so, what's the experience you're having?
@@AdventureMuse really it skips (ring by ring) but i also saw a video from a guy that he make that conversion 9 speed dellaurier with 10 speed cassette but in 11-36
Can I use gs rear derailleur on 11-50 cogs?
You should be able to. check out Mitch Moe's comment below. You'll have to adjust the B screw.
What is your chain for sunrace cassete 12v??
11speed. amzn.to/2OaTvNL
Hi, will this XT-M8000 SGS work with new shimano M5100 11-51 cassette?
Not completely sure if it will but it doesn’t look that much bigger than the sunrace. My frame is 27.5 medium - you might need the extension if you have a 29
@@AdventureMuse I have 29er. Thank you for the info.
@@AdventureMuse I installed it, and works really good. That means I don't need waste money buying 12s groupset
Can i ask you a something what hub you are running
Sure, SRAM MTH 746
@@AdventureMuse ok
I have basically that setup. But my chainring is 34t and the cassette is a sunrace 50t and i ben having son problem shifting
Is it a new set up, or did you just install it?
I use the same cassette with a medium cage with no problems
That's awesome. I think it depends on the amount of travel, bike size, etc. We couldn't get it to work on mine and the long cage fixed the problem. It's still going strong. after many miles.
@@AdventureMuse im using it on a hardtail and its tight, i also have it-on a full sus and it had alot more clearance. Long cage would be easiest but medium cage i find is less chain slap. But just my thoughts , ill always try find a way to make things work
Backed away from 50t. Was too heavy and mech too long. Went with 42t and medium cage. Much much better.
Saludos cordiales desde Cali Colombia South America.
Thanks a lot. Merci beaucoup
Agostino Gobbato you bet! Thanks for watching.☺️
SS k Thanks so much for sharing. There are so many ways to set this up. So glad it worked for you.
Did you use an 11 speed chain?
Yes. Sorry I didn't mention the chain.
Shouldn’t you also change the chain?
Yes! I had already swapped out the chain... I failed to call it out in the video, but I've mentioned it in the comments. Thanks for watching and commenting.
No chain replace?
We had already replaced the chain in hopes of getting more miles out of the cassette. That's a good point I'll edit the description.
Its very good!!
How many teeth is your chainring?
I have a 32t chain ring. www.wolftoothcomponents.com/collections/chainrings/products/104-bcd-chainrings?variant=303173221
Nice
Can you give your old caset for mi pllllllssssss
👍👍
Don't put grease in the hub!!
If that cassette only lasted a year ... even if you did 3,000 miles .in a year . I normally do 11,500 .. Nothing worse wasting money on a product that doesn't last a year ,,,,
Zero longlivity ..
do you normally replace your chain? I didn't replace it and it started skipping... I just didn't maintain it in my opinion. I
I already have a long cage shimano Alivio 9 speed and I want to stay within the 9 speed family, but I want this range. Do you think my derailleur with a goat link 11 would fit the capacity of the large cog cassette?
Good question, but I don’t have the answer for you. It seems a bit of a stretch to make that work, but if you have everything? Maybe try it?
