    This inspired me to do some research. As of 2022 you can obtain a 12-40 by combining pieces from Ultegra 11 speed 12-25 and 11-32, with the last two pieces by 3 of a 11 speed XT cassette. You get 12 and 13 as the first two cogs of the 12-25. Then you take a 14, 16 and 18 from the 11-32, and then the blocks 21-24-27 and 31-35-40 from the XT. You get 12-13-14-16-18-21-24-27-31-35-40, which is a sort of "compact" cassette in 1x understanding of gear ranges. You can use it with a 48 in the front for a good mix of speed and climbing, or with a 44 if you ride long walls and coast the descents. It's similar to a 11-36, with a range wider of almost 1 tooth, so almost a 11-37 with decent spacing between gears.

      @@kkqogir5837 The cassette is smooth in terms of the chain shifting up and down. As all the 1x systems, there is always a bit of penalty with cadence, and perhaps the 18-21 is the worst part because it's right there at around 30kmh roughly with the 48 ring. I will soon switch to the 44, and perhaps the sweet spot speed will go more towards the 16, so it's a bit better.

      18-21, yuck. No point in 12-13 small gap since 12 is a bombing downhill gear. The Shimano 11-40 cassette cogs are already as perfect as they can be for 11s. Tighter gaps in the middle, wider gaps near the ends.

    Well.. I did it. Took the Franken-cassette plunge. Combined my stock SRAM PG-1030 11-42 on my Ibis Hakka, with a SRAM PG-1070 11-28 road cassette. My goal was for smoother cadence at higher speeds. (I know, go back to a 2x) 😎 Here’s how I stacked them: 11,12,13,14,15,19 (from road cassette) then used the 25, 28, 32, 36, 42 from the OEM Hakka cassette. Needs just a slight more shifter input going from 15 to 19 and then from the 19 to the 25. I adjusted the B screw just a few turns but not sure I needed to. Will road test for better feel. Thxs for this idea!

    If you're willing to use lower tier parts, the 105 and SLX cassettes only have the 3 largest cogs riveted together, other 8 are single.
    I think shifting technology is the same, just heavier materials.

    I have the 11-42T as well but saw someone had combined it with a 14-28T cassette to build a 14,15,16,17,19, 21.... 42T for their 2x system. Do you think giving up the 11 and 13T cogs with the 34/50T would be a big deal. At age 60 I’m rarely able to push the 50/11 gear but having some closer gears may be a good thing. OTOH, I was on a downhill segment the other day and I noticed I was in the 50/11 quite a bit. Hmm.

    I've just made a hybrid/crossover of two 7-cog MTB cassettes: the HG200-7 (12-32) and the HG41-7 (11-28). The point was to get a greater range of ratioes - my franken-cassette now has 11 to 32 and I love it. I don't mind shifting 11-13-15- at the tough end of the range. Once I get to the point that a more thorough revamp is needed, I'll probably convert the bike to 8-speed - the axle is long enough.
    Thanks for your vid, it was reassuring to know in advance that principally this is possible.

  • @jonathanzappala
    @jonathanzappala 6 років тому +4

    I'm a fan of the old 12t cog in first position. I have a 12-32 sun race cassette. It sticks you with starting 12-13, there is no way to start 12-14, but ditching the 11 gives you a no jump 12-32 cassette. I'm pretty much the same as you, my dream would be 11-12-14-16-18-21-24-28-32-36-42, which is the old 9 speed 11-32 cassette with the two extra on the back.
    I would also really like to see a 10-11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-28 for the road come out someday. 50/10 beats 53/11.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  6 років тому +2

      Jonathan Zappala yeah agreed, when I was on 2x I used the 12-28 cassette, that was a good as it could be! Hmmm... 11-12-14-16-18... that’s in interesting option! As Bobbie E. Ray pointed out that link for spare cogs... there’s no limit to the possibilities 😄
      I seems that the cogs are optimized for a specific cassette though... if I can live with the wonky shift delay I might give it a go.

    If I understand correctly, if you mix and match sprockets from different sets, there's a good chance the shift between them won't be hyperglide, which I suppose is fine if you're not racing. The shape of the teeth could be different even on two sprockets of the same size from the same series if they were meant to be used in different sets. For example in the 105 series, the 15T sprocket in the 11-28T set is different from the 15T in the 11-34T set. It probably matters very little for casual use.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  6 років тому +1

      Camille C all depends on how picky you are with cadence and what terrain you’re riding. If it’s flat terrain 1x and something like 11-32, or 11-34 should work just fine. But once you get up to the bigger 11-42, or 10-42 for road you will have these bigger gaps... me personally is okay with that, but for racing and hard training it probably not ideal.
      Thank you very much!

    Doesnt make sense to compare difference in teeth between successive cogs, best to compare % change between them. So in this case I would go for 11,12,13,14,15,17,20,24,29,35,42. As you see when you leave the corncob setup (after 15t) then you must increase by the difference of the previous gap by 1 tooth. So after 15 you go to 17. Then the new gap must be 2 (as 17-15=2) + 1 =3, so 20t. And so on

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  6 років тому

      Yes I agree, you’re 100% correct 👌
      if you really want to make it nice and smooth going % is the only way.
      All of this was a compromise to get that 12t and the rest wasn’t really a priority. I wanted build this without buying too many new loose cogs, but that said, I’ve since swapped the 17 for a 18 and while it’s not optimal percentage wise, it’s a slight improvement in the gaps between 15 and 21 (or it’s maybe it’s just placebo 😆)

      Tiene todo el sentido ya que la cadencia no debe ser pasada por alto, una RT mas progresiva siempre es mejor que una con grandes saltos, especialmente cuando se trata de momentos de fuerza donde un salto grande en la RT hace perder progresividad y produce vacíos donde se pierde potencia por saltos tan grandes, pero bueno, hay muchos hijos del marketing en los comentarios.

Sram's XG-1195 shifts perfectly nicely with GRX 810, so I guess it would do the same with any other Shimano groupset, while being around 200 grams lighter. But they are one single piece, so customization is not possible and the 12-10 jump is even larger than the 13-11 jump on the Shimano cassettes.

    is there any advantages in speed if i use 11-28t cassette in my mtb specially if the cogs plate sequence is 11t-12t-13t-14t-15t.....Is it will be fit in,this kind of cassette 11-28t to my mtb hub...currently using 11-42t 10 speed?Thank you in advance

    • @Membrillo81
      @Membrillo81 2 роки тому

      Speed is up to your legs. If you use the MTB for road, then it's fine to use a closer ratio cassette if you don't need the lower gears. For off-road, wider gaps between cogs are actually beneficial because of the irregularity of the terrain.

    Do you think this mod will work with a SunRace CSMX8 11-42?. I saw that the sunrace has 3 clusters till 19, after that 17, 15, 13 and 11 are free, so just take out the 17 and make the 12 from shimano. I found that you can buy separate the shimano dura ace cogs from 11 till 15. Also the sunrace 11-42 has only 419g, its even lighter then shimano xtr 11-42.

    • @ridesofjapan
      @ridesofjapan  2 роки тому +1

      As long as the cogs and spacers are the same thickness, in theory it should work, but I definitely expect the shifting quality to take a big hit.

    • @artoutlawphoto
      @artoutlawphoto 2 роки тому +1

      Jackson Wearn while I'm around the same height I'm only around 64-65kg so I'm a small in most brands including Void (also like my jerseys tight)
      One good thing for me is that Void seems to be slightly longer than other brands in small... Don't know if that translates to the larger sized though.

    I did something similar with my road cassette. I wanted a higher ratio so i bought a Ultegra 6700 12-30 cassette. But this left me with the old dura ace cassette becoming redundant. So i combined the two...! There is a jump in the middle like RoJ describes, which is probably just an artefact of Shimanos cassette Design.. Anyway, Works perfectly and weight savings to Boot! Look at RB cassettes, they've been getting bigger from time to time. Old bikes maxed out at 25. Now maxing out at 34 by default.
