Interesting facts about each stop along the Amtrak Empire Builder! Guide to riding the Empire Builder: ua-cam.com/video/35xDaIKx9es/v-deo.html My own 3-day journey on Empire Builder: ua-cam.com/video/JsL-dM-QtuI/v-deo.html
Jeremy, I'm taking the Empire Builder to Seattle in September, getting off in E. Glacier to spend 2 days at GNP. So glad I came upon this video! Really enjoyed your commentary on all the stops!!
East Glacier is also home to a hotel built by the Great Northern Railroad. Fittingly, it’s called the Glacier Park Lodge, and was the grand hotel advertised by the railroad for passengers traveling from Chicago and points east to stay in and enjoy the park. It’s still as grand now as it was then
I am hoping things get back to normal this year, so I can go from Seattle to Chicago! A big music festival keeps being delayed and when things are good again, this train seems a great, cozy way to make my way there. :)
@@T1DWanderer Thanks! It sounds like a lot of fun! Expensive, but I'm willing to try it one way! On the way back though I'm flying. One way tickets have been cheaper than 100$ last I looked.
16:07 that's a beautiful shot of the Park Pond! The house I grew up in is just across the pond beyond that Forrest. I still find it halarious that the park and the park pond ended up in this video!
I’m taking the Empire Builder westbound to Portland (and Coast Starlight on to LA) next month and the Texas Eagle back. Really enjoyed this video AND the one you did regarding the Sunset Limited (half the Texas Eagle route). Thanks for the time and detail you put into these. Informative and interesting. If I see you on the train, I’ll buy you a Stone IPA. 😊
Great video, I just trekked from Portland to Chicago in late January, great trip very few passengers due to health restrictions. Your information is fantastic. Thank you 🚂
Actor James Arness {TV's Gunsmoke] was born in Minneapolis,he went to the same HS as I did,Central High [years before me],he was a basketball star there...He also was the "thing" in the 1951 movie,The Thing,it was his first acting job
I've hopped onto The Empire Builder in Bingen for the ride to NYC via Chicago, of course. Dunnit twice. The train is so long compared to the station that it loads in two (or three) stages, with the conductor sternly warning sleeper passengers to "Wait! Don't board yet!" For someone who had never ridden a long-distance route before, it's unnerving to watch the transient passengers board and see the coaches begin moving eastward without you! But it did eventually re-stop and open the doors for me to join the fun. Depending upon which time of year you ride, the undulating shadows cast at sundown along the south bank of The Columbia River are breathtaking!
My wife and I took the Empire Builder to Essex and stayed at the Inn. We had a wonderful time. It's a great trip. It was also interesting as it was the last train westbound to make it through ahead of the flooding. We waited in Havre for several hours surround by freight trains while they reballasted the tracks and I have startling pictures taken out of the back of the train with only tracks showing as the water crept up from the flooding. We had to fly back out of Whitefish, but we enjoyed every minute of the trip.
A couple years ago, I took the Empire Builder from Fargo to Portland. There's not a whole lot to see scenery-wise in that stretch until you get into western Montana, but then it gets dark (P.S. Instant thumbs up for the MST3K references.)
Is there any reason why there so many union stations all over the country? Last year I took the train form union station in worcester MA to union in chicago, and then to union in portland.
Thank you for all your research, may I ask in your opinion out of Seattle to Chicago or the Portland to Chicago route, which one is the more beautiful and sceneric route, thank you again.
Of course they're only different for the first few hours, and at least half of those hours are after dark. I have only taken the Seattle version though; from my research I would guess that the Portland version might be more scenic, with the river and bridges and stuff. Maybe someone else has done both and can answer?
There are Facebook groups, called Friends of The Empire Builder ( or insert route name). Ask questions about that or direction, time of year - you will get many enthusiasts sharing opinions. Just don’t join Empire Builder FB group ( that is about game or something) by mistake lol!
Havre is the station closest to the train derailment of September 25, 2021 that killed (at least) 3 people. It was actually closer to the town of Joplin which is a little west of Havre.
Would it be smart to get off at east glacier or browning if coming from seattle to not have to look at the boring Plaines of montana and north Dakota? I want to see all of glacier national park but don't want to go all the way to Chicago because of the boring views after the mountains.
Very good information, although the info on 'famous' people should be used for more info on each station. My wife and I have some mobility issues and we'd like to see more station information on the larger stations such as King St (Seatlle), Spokane, St Paul, etc. Such info as the layout of the station, are luggage carts available, what is the walking distance from ticketing to the actual train, etc. Thanks again for the info you did provide.
hi great videos you do with lots of facts but i've 2 questions can you break the journey more than once with the same ticket ?if your in coach can you check in a big suitcase or is it just for roomettes and bedroom clients ?maybe you already said in another video but i've not watched them all yet
I have always been surprised that the Empire Builder doesn't have a stop in Watertown WI. That city has about 25,000 in population way big enough for stop. It's home to the octagon house which is known for the first kindergarten. It's also home to Berres Brothers Coffee. Anyways great viedo are you going to do this for other Amtrak routes?
Havre Montana is pronounced Have-er and not Hayve. Athough Glasgow Scotland is pronounced Glaz-go, Glasgow Montana is pronounced Glass-go. just so you know for the future.
How about you mention those steam engines? Most people probably are not going because of famous people or movie scenes, probably the views and history, or relocation.

Sounds awesome

Man...the wealth of utterly random information about these towns is absolutely breathtaking. Cheers my brother!
Thanks Brian! Working on another one like this for Sunset Limited now. All kinds of interesting trivia there too!

Great video! I got off at East Glacier NP when I rode from Chicago. I’m planning on riding it again on the entire route
I hope you enjoy the trip! Again from Chicago westward?
Speaking of Steves, your channel reminds me of Steves. It’s accessible and informative. Keep up the good work!
US83 through Minot runs 1,895 miles from Brownsville, TX to Canada, continuing on as Manitoba provincial route 83.
I made the trip from Seattle to Chicago back in the spring of 2015. What a long ride.

Thanks for watching. Glad you liked the info. Keep traveling!
Thank you for the detailed overview. Now I have an idea of what to expect when I ride it this summer from Seattle to Chicago. 👍
Hope you enjoy the ride
I spent 6 weeks in Tioga, ND, right on the tracks, waiting for the weather to turn so we could cut wheat. Never saw Amtrak once.
Great video! I’m headed that way tonight ! I hope to make a video if I can find the courage to post! Cool vid !
Have fun, Jeremy!

Is there any reason why there so many union stations all over the country?
Last year I took the train form union station in worcester MA to union in chicago, and then to union in portland.
That means, back in the day, that multiple train companies used the station
If you stop in the Dells at Christmas time , you can get hot chocolate and Christmas cookies. 🎄

I had to STOP to check this video out.
Pronounced: Haver. Not Hayver. 🤔
Hello I live in Havre Montana! It’s pronounced “Have-er”( it’s French) and Glasgow is pronounced “Glass-Co”. Super awesome video though!☺️
Thanks, and thanks for the tips. And I tried so hard to get the pronunciation right! You never really know until you live somewhere ;)

You are mispronouncing "Havre" as Hay-ver. It is correctly pronouced as Have-her.
Oops, thanks 😓
Very informative...but you need to learn the correct pronunciation of Havre, MT.
It's have-r not haav-r. Short a. You're welcome from a native Montanan
