100 Largest Empires in History

- This video shows the 100 largest empires in History.
Empires are defined as “any relatively large sovereign political entity whose components are not sovereign”
Data is mostly based on:
Rein Taagepera (1979). Size and Duration of Empires: Growth-Decline Curves, 600 B.C. to 600 A.D. Social Science History. Vol. 3, No. 3/4 (1979), pp. 115-138
www.jstor.org/stable/1170959?...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...
I updated Rein Taagepera‘s list because :
- I drew the shapes of the countries on Google map and sometimes found different results from Taagepera's
- I added some empires. For example, I added the United States in its XIXth century form, when it had a colonial empire consisting of the Philippines, Guam, Samoa, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Panama. I would not have classified the USA as an empire today.
You might notice that some empires look larger than others on the map, while being classified as smaller. That is because maps do not represent the actual size of a sphere like the earth.
Please check this video for more details : • Why all world maps are...
Doesn't include Napoleon's French Empire but counts the USA as an "empire".
Okay...
Edit: Whoa...this blew up more than I thought it would. 1yr later I get a random message about a comment on this video and I suddenly find 13k likes and 500comments
USA could be called an empire because it has overseas territories, however, it doesn't have an emperor and is a democracy, so, I have mixed feelings on that statement.
The USA is a Democratic Republic.dipshit...not an empire
@@mikehogan5824 "democratic"
USA is an empire. Many actions the government takes is considered imperialistic. Looking back at history, you see manifest destiny of mainland USA, then you get alaska purchase, also a small colony in liberia for slaves to return to africa, then annexation of hawaii after overthrowing its monarchy, staging coups and military action in latin america, spanish american war resulted in puerto rico, virgin islands, puppet state of cuba, and phillippines as a colony, and more coups on countries and proxy wars. Yeah USA is an empire.
@18th Ram Ranch Cowboy Really, you're just going to say it just isn't. How persuasive; I was almost fooled until you came along to correct me

@@RobloxBoy4375 India only united twice in it's history Mughals and Mauryans and later the British and even than the Tamil kingdoms in the south were independant.
The spanish, russian and mongol empires were at one point bigger than whats shown here
The spanish empire had colonies in europe and their american colonies extended from the tip of south america all the way to canada
The russian empire extended from finland to alaska, making it bigger than the USSR
The mongol empire shown in the video is smaller than the russian empire. The mongol empire at its peak had way more russian territory and also had some territory that was later part of the qing empire.
No one asked, plus your loser
And you are copying my name wtf is wrong with you
By the time the spanish empire had reached its peak, it had already lost its holdings in europe. By the time the russian empire reached its peak, it had already sold alaska. The russian empire hadn't conquered a lot of central asia in 1866, HOWEVER, alaska is bigger than most of russian central asia. Some stuff in this video is not true, since the video's source is probably wikipedia, with some creative liberties taken, and wikipedia's only source is rein taagepera.
The Spaniards controlled neither the south of South America nor the North of North America, effectively conquered by respectively Argentina/Chile and the USA during the 19th century. Claims and ink on paper don't create a reality.
Eso es falso, las posesiones en Europa las perdimos a partir del final de la Guerra de Sucesión. Flandes lo perdimos tras la guerra de los 30 años, y allí el Imperio Español no estaba en su apogeo
I'm impressed that you've included Xiongnu Empire, Rouran Khaganate, and Gokturk Khaganate. But you've shown the Xiongnu Empire at almost half of its size.

The Brazilian Empire actually kept Uruguay as one of its "states" (quoted due to uncertainty), but when Brazil fought Argentina for it, Uruguay "accidentally" became independent
Accidentaly? no actually the United kingdom Argentina and Brasil agreed to make Uruguay an independent state to end the dispute
@@samuelmenendez731and it was a great move, Uruguai and Paraguai works as great buffer states between Brazil and Argentina
This is true, but when the Brazilian Empire had Uruguay, it was not the largest territorial extension.
The largest was the one shown in the video, without Uruguay, but with territories conquered from Paraguay and Bolivia and some from Colombia and Venezuela that the Brazilian Empire bought
it goes much further back than that . Spain & Portugal fought over the area that eventually became Uruguay for over a century. you might of heard of "Colonia de Sacramento".? it's an historic Portuguese colonial town in Uruguay that changed hands between the Portuguese and Spanish many times over.

@German Tactics_DEU
During the First World War, a revolution occurred in Russia and the soldiers simply went home from the front because a civil war began in Russia. Therefore, the German troops had great success at this time. And the new communist government signed a peace treaty with Germany, because Lenin was a traitor and a German spy, as they say. But if a revolution had not occurred in Russia, the First World War would have ended for Germany even worse and faster. The Allies won the war without Russia, and with Russia they would have won it even faster.

I just expected the comments to say "wHerE thE HecK is vIkRam's EMpire It is Largest" nor "the U.S. is not an empire" nor "wHerE is Fr**ch n*PoleON EmPirE", I gonna answer those questions based on my language dialect and analysis.
First, the reason why the U.S. and Rome (at some point Rome is a republic) is included because uhh just read the description! Not all empires are monarchs, and is based on the country's "imperial" behaviour.
Second, the creator of this video based this on the empire's greatest extent, so probably it is the reason why N*pole*nic Empire is not included and Fr**ch Empire is included. That did not answer the Chinese dynasties though, I'm not 100% sure, it's up to the creator of this video.. IDK OKAY
Third, to get an empire listed, you will need a strong clue of the nation's existence. That's why:

- Tartary (alias Tartarian Empire nor the Breatherians nor the Ancient Siberia)
- Lycidia
- Great Central Germany
..are not included. Sorry if this makes you mad or not, but you need strong clues, so don't blame some random tiny circles in Algeria for that. Nations with borders still debated (e.g. Kingdom od the Yandale) are usually only include known borders, like Majapahit Empire. It has been said that Majapahit reached Cambodia and modern-day Champa but the borders are still debated, so whenever you wanna see the Majapahit's greatest extent, it did not include Cambodia and Champa.
Correct me if I'm wrong, and sorry for bad grammar
A follow up:
- if Chalukya dynasty even exist, that would be between 30 and 40
- if Vikramaditya of Ujjain's empire exist, that would be the second largest empire ever, behind the Brits, above the Mongols
- if Tartarian Empire exist, it will replace Empire of Japan's position
- if Lycidia exist, it will be the same size of modern day Middle East + Turkey, Egypt, Iran and Turkmenistan expansion pack (probably number 9)
- if Great Central Germany exist, it will be the same exact size of the Hunnic Empire, and covered all of modern-day Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Poland, Kaliningrad, the Benelux and northern Italy.
- we don't know the borders of Kingdom of the Yandale to be exact, but historians drew the borders pretty much all Northwestern African part of Roman Empire. (above Hyksos)
- If Majapahit empire actually touch South Vietnam, beaches of Cambodia, Phuket and other regions in Thailand, Palawan and other modern-day Filipino islands, and Darwin (Australia), then it will be about the size of modern-day Congo.

It is curious that the maximum extension of the Spanish Empire is not used, it was in 1803, when it included Spanish Lousiana of 2,275,940 km².
In that year the territory was ceded to France.
The Spanish Empire at the time of its maximum extension (1802) covered 17,265,636 km².
Was bigger in 1793, having that and the Nootka Territory
@@user-ls8or7ps3o
Yes, the Spanish Empire claimed it, but it is difficult to propose it because no one knows about it, it lasted only a few years (1789-1795), its extension varies according to sources (3,300,000 km2 in some cases) and Great Britain immediately claimed it for itself, finally remaining as unallocated territory.
Anyway, by extension, it would continue to be the 4th largest Empire in history, behind the Russian, Mongol and British.

"Largest power entities" better title?
but it still doesn't have modern russia, soviets, modern china, or napoleon just to name a few, so it doesn't fit that definition.
What is meant with an empire in this presentation was defined in the Info section as "any relatively large sovereign political entity whose components are not sovereign”. One can argue about the definition of terms, but that is how it was defined by the author. As a side note, and question, I am not qualified to have an opinion about whether all the entities in this presentation meets this requirement or not. Do they?
@@supremeastro5300 It seams to me that the video maker picked the largest extent of any given "empire". E.g. modern Russia is smaller than CCCP was, and one can argue it was made a bit arbitrary yes.
