I had fun and didn't know I'd get a style for it but I could tell if I had been a yakuza fan, I'd coom about it. Idk why they changed the attack speed or made heat requirements for double finish tho. It's actually Majima showing tough love to Kiryu. The events of 0 really showed how fucked up the Yakuza life is, and Kiryu still seems to be naive of it from Majima's point of view. If you act soft, they WILL take advantage you. But since Kiryu insists on "doing things the right way," Majima decided he would help Kiryu see those ideals to the end.
It's really not. Considering Y1 was written way before Y0. Add the fact, that Majima literally kidnaps a child just to get Kiryu to fight him, and you see that Majima in Y1 clashes with his own character in Y0.
@@WebbedManiac This scene was not in the original Y1. They added this in because of the context of Yakuza 0 and them foreshadowing the Majima Everywhere system. Majima would later explain he did all that to ensure Kiryu got his strength back because "Kamurocho is just that dangerous nowadays" and the fact that he wanted to fight the legend himself.
They also retconned some things from the original like how Majima's bandages from the second time you fight him in Y1 was from the stab wound one of his men accidentally gave him then instead became a gunshot wound from a former Dojima man shooting him.

Regardless, with the context of 0, the Haruka kidnapping is still a major character break. So is Kiryu leaving Majima for dead at the pier.
@abhinav2500 I think I remember hearing something about the developers changing it so Majima kidnapped Haruka under Shimano's orders. Don't remember where I got that from sadly. But yeah those two are definitely out of character for them

FYI, it is possible to defeat Majima that first time at around 1:29:12, you just need really good reflexes and a lot of patience and boneheadedness.
All things considered, she was doing a lot better in the first Majima fight than I expected. She had some really clutch dodges in there.
For anyone who doesnt know. In the Dub of the original Yakuza game on PS2 , Majima was played by Mark Hamill. Majima is LITTERALLY the joker. (Also fun fact. Mark Hamill doesnt remember it)

Ah hey thats me. Yeah its kind of been odd with how YT has been doing comments. I believe it started around December when this behaviour happened. Doing my best to troubleshoot and sending emails to YT. Hopefully it gets resolved, but if not then I'll do my best to find a way around it!
I am so happy to see that Bae is playing more of the series and I'm especially happy that she picked the first game. I mean I knew that she would most likely play the other games but I didn't think that she would immediately jump into them right now but hey more people to know about the series the better. So now the cute little rat is now into the crime field world of Kamarucho once again and she is going to beat up everyone. I'm about half way through the stream, but wanted to get a comment in before the next one.
Mashima warns Kiryu that setting his ideals against the world will break him. Mashima's never been an idealist, yet is obviously a very broken man. He acts like a fairy, but I get the sense at this point in his life, all he wants to do is get revenge on Yakuza. Treating his enemies and allies as trash to be stomped fits that mo.
Kiryu doesn't want to advance up the Yakuza ladder and is content to be a middle of the road enforcer. He's not living up to his potential that way. His lack of ambition is a threat to the future of the family.
Kazama likes his complicated plans that boil down to Kiryu having to punch his way through everything in order to succeed. As a former assassin, he's killed alot of people, and if he wants that blood shed to actually matter in the long run, he needs Kiryu to act as his golden boy redeemer to set the future.
Nishki saved Yumi. No one gives him any credit for that. On the other hand, Dojima never seemed that strong, and if his really run down tiny office was anything to go by, he'd lost alot of prestige and standing in the organization. Nishki should have been able to kick his ass without killing him so what the hell happened?
Shimao's blood vessels burst when he learned Kiryu was back in town. That's why the hair (ha!) dresser pricked his scalp with the razor.
I understand this a remake of an old PS2 (3?) game, but it doesn't seem like it was a total rebuild. It's inferior to 0 in many ways.

I mean, if you have played 0 before this then it's literally Easy Mode because Shimano is just Mr Shakedown but worse. Although the fight does get kinda lengthy if you don't have Essence of Extreme Rush unlocked.
Glad to see you've still got your enthusiasm for playing through the rest of the series even with how dated 1 feels compared to the super high bar 0 sets. It's definitely worth sticking through with it all the way and I know you'll love what's to come once you get past the awkward bits (of which really just 1 and 3 stick out)

It's a bit unfortunate that this game and ESPECIALLY Kiwami 2 show their age in terms of storywriting since they were from the PS2 originally, but I still think this one's pretty good despite being more trope-y and less intricate. The stories didn't start getting really good until 3, imo. Hope you enjoy it anyway; there's still a lot of good moments!! Majima gets so much development over the games!

The Dragon style may look weak now, but let me assure you, putting time into upgrades is so worth it.
It is kinda broken huh? A lot of people seemed to be annoyed by Majima everywhere and didn't chonk it out. I loved it tho and was kinda always on the lookout for getting that next upgrade. Plus I wanted that speed upgrade so bad. It felt like an insult to have that unlocked and not be usable at all

If it'd been me, after slapping Reina, I'd have been so f-ing sorry. Nishki on the other hand seemed more than a little surprised he'd done it. I kind of thought that Zero might have been, at least at one point, playing with the idea that Nishki had a certain darkness to him that being with Kiryu kept at bay, but at the same time fueled. Like at the beginning, he's late meeting with Kiryu after collecting at the Vacant Lot, so that means he doesn't have an alibi for when Kiryu's victim gets shot. Having him deeply involved with the frame up because he wants to get out of Kiryu's shadow from the very beginning would have been quite something.
Mind, he doesn't *have* to know he's framing Kiryu, he just has to know he's performing a hit on a guy. After the fact he can learn the truth and be forced to keep that bottled up. But instead of setting that up, Zero ties up that loose end by having the Super Assassin guy be credited with the deed, preserving Nishki's good boy status.
Granted, they could still do something amazing with him in this game, but there's room for doubt. They'll pull a last minute "See! It wasn't his fault, he's a good boy, all part of daddy's plan!". Probably to compound some tragedy. But the set up is there, an embittered man tired of living in his beloved brother's shadow, wanting to make a name for himself.
I assume Haruka saw what went down at the bar. Smart as she is, she'd deny seeing anything. That's a *very* grown up level of understanding for her situation,, and the story hasn't quite established that she's *that* smart, but it's pointing that way.
I think what 0 did with Nishki is to highlight the tragedy with him. If you had been a yakuza fan prior, seeing him and Kiryu standing side by side, Nishki proclaiming that he feels invincible with Kiryu is all delicious dramatic irony. I think he was shocked at what he did to Reina that he was also stood there, unable to even say sorry realizing what this situation was bringing out of him

Thanks for the stream Bae! I was only able to catch the last few bits of the stream, but I'm glad to see that you're enjoying the original story as well. In case you haven't already, you might want to watch the side story content online if you're not planning on playing Yakuza 0 again. The side stories are legitimately great and some of them even get referenced in Kiwami. If you're really planning on trying to complete the series in a timely fashion be sure to pace yourself and not burn yourself out.

Even though I really like Majima-san in 0, I still prefer his "iconic", mad dog version. Not only because he's simply funnier now. He himself really hates that time in his life when he had to put on a mask of a "straight type". Which is ironic because Majima-san is clearly wearing another mask, but this time it's something he picked up by choice. And I wish him all the best, he's my favorite character in all games.

I'm playing through 8 right now and hearing the difference between Kiwami Kiryu and Old Kiryu is quite striking, I don't know if it's just that Kuroda is that good or that his voice naturally shifted that way because he's gotten older himself

Already getting into the real meat of the story, nice. And cool she gets it that this was written almost 20 years ago I know its a long shot cause its so tedious but I really hope Bae gets pretty deep into Majima Everywhere Its so fun

Great stream today, Bae! I agree with the sentiment that Kiwami's story isn't as compelling as 0's, it definitely feels like a slow burn in comparison. The combat also feels a lot harder with how the enemy AI behaves (wait for you to attack, dodge, then retaliate), it's so annoying. You're doing great so far, though! Staminans on hand so you can use heat actions on demand is great and you can also pick up objects in Brawler/Beast mode to use heat actions that way too (doesn't have to match color and it will stop the regen).
Some combat tactics if you want to adopt them:
-Rush style is great when you learn how to weave with L1/LB and circle around them to hit their back where they can't defend themselves.
-Beast is still great for large groups of enemies but not as strong as it was in 0 for 1-on-1's.
-Brawler will let you brute-force a lot of fights if you learn how to counterattack when you get hit. If you tap X/Y/B (Light/Heavy/Grab) right after you get hit, you'll flash red and immediately counterattack. Heavy usually staggers them out of their combo and grab will straight up stop them. Boss enemies usually won't let you throw them but you might get lucky if you mash grab again to throw them for some easy damage, but it's less likely with tougher enemies.
Oh... and the Glass Bulletproof Pendant + Arm Guards from the Weapon Merchant will be great battle accessories against guns and bladed weapons later down the line. A sword will be good for a Dragon style heat action if you ever need it, too. Good luck, Bae! Can't wait to see you play more of this real soon!
I disagree on Combat. I find Kiwami, Gaiden & Lost Judgment is Best Combat I ever find in this franchise of Beat-em-Up Style. Then if you're looking for more Turn-Based then Yakuza: Like A Dragon/7 and Infinite Wealth/8 is your choice.
Story wise yeah they don't change much from the Original (minus they rewrite or added some stuff to make Kiwami tied as Zero Sequel) same goes to Kiwami 2.
Our time with the baldy of dojima was short but sweet

And so begins the next chapter of Yakuza! Glad to see that you're enjoying this game. I do understand that it's harder than 0 and the story might be less engaging but you seems to be learning and getting through the game fine and I do think this story is pretty good for what it is. Of course it's only the beginning so it'll get better later on.
I'm excited to see more Yakuza next time! Just be on the lookout for Majima after all, he's EVERYWHERE!
