I think that's the wrong way to look at it. We should rather want to gain the place in heaven that God has designed for us. The spiritual battle is against ourselves rather than those who have already made it to glory.
The Spiritual Canticle of the Soul and the Bridegroom Christ (full title) by St John of the Cross is a magnificent poem of the progress of the soul to full Union with the beloved. It is also the commentary on the poem written for the Carmelite Nuns, explaining the ascent of the soul. St John of the Cross uses imagery taken from the Song of Songs; as do many of the Saints noted for their spiritual writings, such as St Bernard. The Spiritual Canticle can be found with commentary on the internet, free of charge.
REVELATION 14/4/5 NRSV It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgines, these follow the Lamb wherever he goes, they have been redeemed from human kind as first fruits for God and the Lamb, and in their mouth no lie was found they are blameless.
My goodness, with great sadness (almost tempted to give up, almost but I mustn't), I'm most likely in the 4th mansion at the moment. Sainthood is truly hard.
Fr Ignatius , please could you let us know what is the name of the book you read about the difference between a contemplative mystic and the active mystic?
The best talk in this topic that is available on the internet. Thanks be to God for blessing us with this gift.
