iKegger Nitro Coffee Keg With Gas Comparison (Nitrogen vs Nitrous Oxide)

  • This is a superseded version of our Nitro Keg. It's now been upgraded to the iKegger 2.0 system which allows using Nitrogen or Nitrous Oxide in a mini regulator so that you can see and set the pressure to whatever you like then pour with the push of a button. See it on our websites at www.ikegger.com www.ikegger.eu or www.ikegger.co.nz
    This information about the difference between Nitrogen and Nitrous Oxide is still relevant however it should be noted that in the years since I made this video I think that pure nitrogen gives a more RELIABLE foam on espresso martinis. Nitrous Oxide can be a lot easier and faster to produce the foam, and it uses less gas, however, it seems to be more affected by alcohol content, oils in the coffee, and the time between infusing and serving the martinis than pure Nitrogen is.
    I think using Nitrous Oxide can be great if you are in a hurry and want to serve the cocktails asap, but the foam may dissipate fairly quickly after pouring depending on factors above. Pure nitrogen takes longer to absorb, everything must be chilled and either well shaken with the gas or left to sit overnight but the resulting foam stays on the martini till the drink is finished. You can also use one of each bulb for a mix of their effects.

    how long and how well used is your keg? Wanted to get one myself, but wanted to make sure it was safe to use. It does seem that the pressure release works well enough to keep it safe

    • @IKEGGER
      @IKEGGER  5 років тому +1

      They are 100% safe. The keg has a pressure rating of 100psi the pressure release valve is 75psi. It will actually become safer over time as the spring in the release valve will slowly weaken with use and eventually start releasing gas at a gradually lower and lower pressure (you can reverse this by simply taking the spring out and stretching it a little).

    Will this system work for a Guinness clone? Probably a 5l keg though.

    Hi, thank you for sharing this! May I know how different does the coffee taste with N2O compared to N2? Is it sweeter and creamier?
    Apparently coffee volume (liquid) is less with more froth produced when N2O is used. Does it feel like drinking coffee bubbles more than the coffee itself in term of the overall drinking experience? It is interesting and will definitely try it!

      Also, may I know have this method been tried for nitro-latte?

      Hi there, it is only very slightly sweeter and its still a liquid rather than foam, but a very creamy light liquid. We have tried with warm drinks yes, it works very well

      It will be bad idea to use hot coffee because gas dissolve worse in high temp

    What volumes of ingredients do you need to fill a growler with expresso martini? A quick google have me this:
    Ingredients
    50ml Grey Goose vodka
    35ml coffee liqueur
    1 shot (25ml) of CRU Light Roast (or other) espresso
    Ice

    • @IKEGGER
      @IKEGGER  5 років тому

      The basic recipe we use is 50% cold brew coffee, 25% vodka and 25% kahlua but there are thousands of variations according to taste. High alcohol content will reduce the longevity of the foam (ie 100% vodka will never hold foam)

    With the flow restriction tap, what setting is required?

      Fully open, the flow control is only needed when using it for beer or other carbonated drinks

    This is great. Thanks for the tips. The nitrous oxide does look better. So when using 2 charges of nitrous oxide, how many glasses does it make until you have to put another gas?

    • @IKEGGER
      @IKEGGER  4 роки тому

      Until the flow slows down, depends on the size of the keg and how much empty space it has in it when you start.

    I'm using the cream nitrous oxide chargers with a cream whipper. I get a similar effect. I don't like how much head you get. You're not generally able to pour as much coffee as with the pure nitrogen.
