There was an old Simpsons gag where Lisa wanted to try out for the football (gridiron) team to make a statement, only for the coach to enthusiastically welcome her and point to the three other girls already on the team. The scene ended with Lisa dejectedly walking away. Why Disney promotes an ego project that pursues controversy above art (and profit!) is beyond me. I think the actually talented female directors/writers get driven off for actually caring about the art.
Yeah, thinking about it, I'd guess that a lot of of the more experienced and high quality directors don't want to work with Disney and Lucasfilm, since both put so many mandates on what can and can't be shown.
The interplay between feminists who hate trans is fascinating - we have 'men' invading women's safe spaces and there's nothing they can do about it. But they can't call them Men or they get labelled TERF and cancelled like JK Rowling. There is a concept in Germany known as “Regietheater”, where the production is more about the director’s vision than the source material or… anything else really. In the case of things like productions in german opera houses, this is because the germans feel that the ability to create art purely for the sake of art should be protected and supported. Germany goes so far as to support opera houses with tax dollars. As a result, they are allowed to create art without needing to appease a certain demographic in order to sell tickets. Most of the time, beautiful and imaginative productions come from this freedom. But sometimes, sometimes… directors drunk with power will shit all over the source material the house the singers and everyone else involved to order to produce a “provocative” version that “gets people talking”. The major difference though, is that if no one comes to see that production, the house will do fine. There is no need for it to sell tickets, or recoup its costs. Sometimes “getting people talking” is all the production really needs to do. This is not the case with Star Wars or Disney. Making things in Star Wars provocative just for the sake of being provocative is not going to turn out so well for you. 😂
And yet, if I go to such a production I am free to cry "boo" from my seat in the audience, and if many people do that that fact hits the newspapers and is reflected upon in the cultural section of the various news. This can have serious consequences for the director.
@@able34bravo37 The tax money isn't wasted, it's invested in culture. And like every investment, sometimes it's a stinker. These opera houses aren't really supposed to churn out pure entertainment, they're supposed to keep our cultural heritage alive and developing. So it's fine if a production doesn't work out. The involved institution shouldn't go broke because of that, the lack of audience appreciation is enough of a signal that this was not it and makes the theatres reevaluate their course of action. If one started to ONLY produce shit (like Disney recently), then it would at some point also get it's funding slashed or interference from the governing bodies that are responsible and that are democratically elected but if you want art, you need to give artists leeway, it's a complex and creative process, not something that can be done in a manufactory.
It's annoying that no one called her out on what she said. "I like to make men feel uncomfortable" Why? To what end? When a woman says this on TV, society is expected to give her the benifit of doubt. She obviously had good intentions. If a guy says this... Shame him. Make him grovel and apologise but end his career regardless. It's very much the rotten oppressor vs oppressed mind set to which there is no middle ground. Gross and regressive.

Look up the video "The Gnostic Parasite" and then watch the video "Feminism is feminist gnosticism". It will all make sense and you won't be able to unsee it. You'll see it all repeated in different phrases but all with the same meaning. This is a death cult masquerading as altruistic activism. It's goal is the power to create transformative change...By abusing and hurting "oppressive structures". Understand that "oppressive structures" are anything they don't control.
@tobybigham4196 Sociopaths and psychopaths can look very similar. That said, in my very unprofessional opinion, I see a sociopath as opposed to a psychopath. She lacks the superficial charm of a psychopath, in fact she has no charm whatsoever. Psychopaths are born, sociopaths are created. She wears her trauma, anger, and misguided misgivings on her sleeve and as a badge of honor while she lashes out with manipulation and a smile.. I don’t know anyone who wants to see a movie that pits one gender against the other. A friend asked me to read White Fragility a while back. I'm a comic book nerd so I saw something others might not pick up on but in chapter 2 she said what she was doing was wrong but her training made her the only person who could do it. And then it clicked she was giving the the villain's speech justifying horrific things she was doing because of her greater vision. In this video there's a couple of times the director slips into the villain's speech. And it's amazing how comfortable she is as the villain. Taking joy in the discomfort of others isn't the winning marketing strategy she thinks it is.
Yeah there’s a reason most movies in the last 50 years have had Nazis or communists as the main villains, it’s better for business if you make the punching bag someone that no one likes and therefore doesn’t give your audience a reason to skip the movie.

2:00 - Ran into this a LOT in the Air Force. So often, each time a woman does something it's the "first" time--even though other women did it for years already. Each woman wants to be special and unique; each a pioneer in whatever field. Men do those things day after day, year after year, as just a part of their jobs with little to no recognition. But women's egos have to be fluffed or they become despondent and social problems arise. 5:10 - Again, can confirm. In the USAF women not only are protected from standards and consequences, but they _know_ it and behave accordingly.

Has Star Wars become so toxic that no actual director would touch it now so they literally had to go halfway around the planet and hire the first person they could find that would do it?
No way. It’s a huge brand and directors know they would get a huge budget to work with. It’s pretty much a guaranteed success if you’re a good director who can make a good movie. I think they’re just trying to find more unknown, indie directors that they can control and force to tell whatever specific message the studio wants, not just make a good movie.
@@ErikDayneIt was a guaranteed success, but there is a reason Lucasfilm stopped making movies for a longer time period, and when they returned, with an actually acclaimed and big budget experienced director, that movie was the biggest flop Hollywood ever had at that time (but may get pushed from the throne of flops by The Marvels). Guaranteed success no longer exists at Lucasfilm and after a director utterly fails, the anger of the fandom waits … people with a damn good memory and a lot of dedication … so those failing directors can say goodbye to their career … case in point: even J.J. Abrams stopped directing movies after Rise of Skywalker.

The true irony for me is surprisingly simple. We wouldn't care about anything that came out of her mouth if she had any history of competence. If she had five action movies under her belt - from any company, made in any country - which made audiences stand up, pointed at the screen, and say "fuck yes!" we simply wouldn't care who she is. We are willing to overlook pretty much everything about an actor, director, producer being a shitty person as long as they do good work. Which is in a sense exactly the way it should be. Say what you want to about Weinstein but his career lasted multiple decades and he made multiple billions of dollars for a lot of people. Hollywood didn't care. (I would argue they never cared but Me Too was simply a convenient vengeance mechanism 4 feet stepped on along the way.) But this woman has nothing and literally is nothing when it comes to this industry. The money men at Disney must be gritting their teeth, knowing that this is going to be a cash burner of magnificent proportions. She has absolutely no competence in her field to judge from her work. That's it. That's the totality. If she had anything to bring to the table except "I'm an arrogant, entitled, shit of a woman," that's what we hang hope on. If she even bothered to lie effectively about it, it would be okay. She, and the rest of the Disney machine, have so little respect for the global audience that they won't even formulate a decent lie. That's what I object to.

There were great female characters in the Star Wars extended universes. They were all in KOTOR 2, and they were written by Obsidian. Even the cannon, at the time, had the main character be a woman. An older Jedi and a former general named Meetra Surik. She was only Jedi who was able to live without the force, by choice. As the story unfolded, she became that tough but likable mother to a bunch of lost people. The stories of her deeds, I, as a man, would be damn proud to serve under someone like that, unlike the hollow girl boss mary Sue Spawn being churned out by today's Star Wars writers.
@user295295 I do. You don't have to be good or the protagonist to be considered a great character. In fact, Kreia is one of my favorite characters. She was the only person in Star Wars who saw the Force as a manipulative eldritch god and the Jedi /Sith as handicapped narrasistic children who bring ruin through their worship of the Force. She wanted to kill the Force to free everyone.

The thing about Star Wars is it was the first to teach us that you can use females and minorities in important roles and do it effectively. When Princess Leia was presented as a strong and powerful leader, no one batted an eye. When is the first time we see Lando, a black man? As the director of Cloud City and he eventually becomes one of the heroes of Endor. One of the highest ranking commanders of the Rebellion was Mon Mothma, another woman. In the prequels, you have Padme and Mace Windu. Plus Ashoka if you bring in the animated shows. All that to say it’s laughable that Disney acts like bringing in a female or non white influence is stunning and brave. 😂
"It's not who you are but what you do" has been the root of good storytelling since the dawn of time. It's the dweebs who bring in "this time it's an (insert demographic) who's the hero!" and then proceed to emphasize the inherent qualities of the demographic _as_ the source of heroism--that's the problem.
We also had a likable female child character with Cindel (Aubree Miller) in Ewoks Battle Of Endor. She was adorable and courageous and helped the Ewoks

If she wants to make men uncomfortable, that's fine. Just don't expect them to make your life comfortable by buying or viewing your products. Simple supply and demand.
Also, her line of thinking is self-centered, yet it should be focused on storytelling, character development, literary power, thematic underpinnings, and working with a team of professionals on sound, music, lighting, costuming, acting, etc. in order to deliver a project that will last for decades to come. NONE OF THAT seems like a priority. Instead, it's the tired and tantrum-fueled "I am this, I am that, and you'd better shut up and pay attention". 🙄 It's bloody embarrassing.
Is it fine though? Anything that makes a women feel uncomfortable is quickly becoming a criminal offense in many countries. Maybe men should push for the same...
If simply stating that she is factually the first female to helm a Star Wars movie is enough to dismiss the project altogether, you may not be much of a Star Wars fan.
If your job’s purpose is to “make men uncomfortable” then don’t be surprised when they don’t show up to support your project, or buy your product. You reap what you sow.
There's just one thing: young boys are going to be taken to the theater to see this movie because there are so many clueless parents who haven't watched enough Disney Star Wars to be aware of its currently pathetic state.

You can drop the quotes around "director" since the standards for being put in charge of a multi-million dollar movie are so low these days that being a Hollywood director no longer commands any respect.
So, let me get this straight. 1. She hates men. 2. She plans to make a movie she knows they won't like... on purpose. 3, When it fails (and it will fail) she will blame men for it. 4. And Disney knows this and is still going to give her money to do it? Stockholders need to look into suing Disney.

I'd be pissed about my tax money being wasted like that.
And, in fact, I am, because my tax dollars fund even dumber shit than that alrady.
@able34bravo37 Germany is incredibly wealthy and aren't in debt the way America is. It's just a different culture

Disneys ability to remain out of touch and grab the most unlikable people is completely unparalleled. It is a genuine talent to hire people who alienate your audience and lose your money and still keep on the same path. I am impressed with their sheer determination if nothing else.
Let's not forget the incredible entertainment of watching this train wreck happen in slow motion 😂
They're deep in WEF money, so hiring a WEF plant was probably concession.
To be fair, there's so many hateful assholes in Hollywood it's hard to hire a good person today.
This is the biggest franchise suicide in history, and they keep on trying on killing all their IP’S
It’s too bad Spielberg didn’t want to do the new trilogy. That would’ve been perfect.
I don't think so. Think about how meteorically your career with explode if 'you' made the movie that turned around Star Wars! It would be a daunting task based on the walls disney would put in your way but you would be a time lord to most of humanity
@@brettloo7588 Well that comment made sense, thanks.
(I would argue they never cared but Me Too was simply a convenient vengeance mechanism 4 feet stepped on along the way.)
But this woman has nothing and literally is nothing when it comes to this industry.

Sure, as long as you don't count Kreia among them. I did not like that character.
@@elihan9 I respect your well-motivated response, and agree that Obsidian's writing is much better than Disneys.
@user295295 thank you
@@elihan9 Yes, she saw the Force as something it wasn't, brilliant. Then constantly pulled powers out of her ass to the point that she killed 3 Jedi Masters with hardly more than a Thanos snap. And who opposed the idea of "helping people" because it made them weak, even if they would have died without the help. Kreia is an absolute clusterfuck of a self-indulgent character written by a person who admitted he never liked Star Wars that much--pretty much sounds like a Disney product, just with alot more pretentious, bitchy claptrap.
EXACTLY this.
We also had a likable female child character with Cindel (Aubree Miller) in Ewoks Battle Of Endor. She was adorable and courageous and helped the Ewoks
The point was that the race or sex of a character wasn't their identity. They were individuals.
@@steveouk90126 That's the original point of the Good Samaritan parable. The people back then HATED the Samaritans and he's the one guy who helps the guy left on the side of the road after getting beaten and robbed.
Can we appreciate Kathryn Bigelow has released several absolute bangers for male audiences, but Hollywood never highlights her?
You can't trust someone who can't even spell their name right.
Second this! Add Mimi Leder to this list!
Agreed. I think the problem is that Bigelow doesn't carp on being a woman, she's just good at her job. That's a problem in current Hollywood.
I’ve watched so many good films from the 80s onward that were directed by women, but you didn’t realize it until the credits ran. Woketards like this woman act like they are breaking new ground; it’s already been done by far superior people with no expectation of accolades.
Once again, just imagine a man saying this vitriol
She's living in a fantasy world if she think she's making any men uncomfortable with obscure documentaries and foreign language cartoons they've never watched.
I remember an old Wonder Woman animated movie that showed Diana calling out a woman's bluff when she pretended to be weak to make guys do her work while trying to act strong when she didn’t need help.
The message was that if you want to be treated as equal, you should not pretend to be weak to get help.
That is the difference between true feminism and this director's kind of feminism.
Edit: Also, Wonder Woman always respects her hero friends regardless of their color or gender.

I have always made this type of woman uncomfortable, as I exhibit boredom with such people. She's out looking for a fight, but will cry foul if she ever gets in one. She pretty much said so herself.
"We don't know anything about the upcoming Fantastic Four movie, except we know the Silver Surfer will be a woman. When this is what's advertised, it's what's important. And what's important to Disney is surface level crap. They rarely talk about the characters as people. They rarely talk about the audience and what we might want. But no, they are quick to let us know they hired women to play some parts, and they might be gay."

She's using the Dark Side.
So she's basically admitting what we already knew about Hollywood "victims:" that they only play the victim to get away with everything. I mean, points for total transparency, right?
Someone also pointed her history and family. Not exactly a struggle for her growing up….
Her father was a factory owner. Her grandpa was a shipping magnate. Her husband is active board member roles in critical Pakistan infrastructure (telecom & automotive) with a side hustle of an NGO and hedge fund. Who knows what connections she had through her mum? Her mother, Saba Obaid was listed on the Panama Papers leak in 2016.
Thanks for that info. Funny how some one who is born into such obvious privilege has to obsess on the fact she is female and lean so hard into the only victim status she can latch on to. """Oh , woe is me I am a women.""" Like in her mind she cannot imagine that a man say born into slum life with an abusive mother and father could be more of a victim of circumstances that she will ever be in a million years even though he is a man Women are always trying to win the victim olympics no matter what their circumstances..
The double standart is absolutely digusting, and the nerve on her to say it publicly and proudly, holy shit! The thought that people like this are in these positions and even encouraged to be like this makes me sick! Would say unbelievable but I would be lying...
But they're oppressed!!!
