Mr. CT, don't worry to much about the internal lip of the battery tray.. You can make it yourself easily and cheap. Don't underestimate your power to make parts, as aftermarket parts rarely fit as supposed.. so you have to adapt and make small corrections. Also, the fitting is key, the better it fits, better will be, less stress, less prone to detach by vibration, better for structure. Sooo, get the hammer and beat the crap out of it and make it fit properly. 😉Oh, and if I was you, I would spend some extra time to shape the repairs in metal and avoid shaping filler. With less filler you'll get better outcome. It's worth it. Using filler seems faster and easier, but in the long run I foresee complications, especially with rust and degradation due to hot and cold.. Anyway, you're the boss, you decide. 😏Keep on, make it happen!
the easiest welder to use is the Best arch it only has 1 nob and it is heat the wire speed is automatic. Works great. only takes .030 wire but still butt welds great.
Even in Germany, Karmann Ghias, VW Beetle 1200 - 1500 etc. are getting rare! It's become hard to spot them in traffic. So let's be grateful towards everyone who has taken the pains to restore one of these cars, even if Rust has taken its toll!
CT, definitely cut the battery tray patch and do not overlap the original metal, the dual layer of sheet metal will become a moisture/dirt trap and lead to complications later. You won't be able to paint or seal the sandwiched surfaces of sheet metal after over laying. I may be missing what your intent is, but think it would be better to have a single layer of sheet metal that you can prep/treat/paint.
Love the car. Take a look at Fitzee's fabrication channel if you haven't before. Really good opportunity to use his cut and butt method instead of trimming to a line. Also you are tickling your mig trigger.....😂 leave in on for a couple of seconds better weld better penetration when settings are right. Good luck
yea I would have cut into a butt on both those panels. Nothing behind them. I actually would have butted the water drainage channel then lapped the other part then cut it into a butt.
Maybe if you prefer take the last option, removing the horizontal part complete and weld the new part onto the tray for the rubber lip. I would open the old part exactly at the right angle. Second option for me, let the old part remain and cut the new part close to the edgy i believe thats less work and more of the original bodywork is saved. Best regards, Tom B.
Great to watch you continue to work on one car. I hope to see it finished, Have you tried to clamp the new and old panels in position and cut both at the same time that should give you a good enough fit without too much riding back
Sorry to Hear that my friend. I hope it's back on now. Ours went out for a few hours...not too bad...One year our power was out for over a week...that was not fun.
Yeah ct go for it save what you have that extra piece of metal i cannot see a problem it will make it stronger make sure you osfo it and everything you don’t want the rust to return. Then paint it and seam seal the gaps well👍
@@CTmoog Thanks CT. I spent a week at sea level. That helped A TON! I'm back up at elevation now, but my lungs are 70% better than they were before I left... It's crazy how hard it is to recover up here in the clouds!!!
@@Joesrustbuckets It's crazy how time flies right!?!?! Watching CT brings back great memories... I can tell you, every time I drive the Ghia, I still get the same kick out of it!
Good morning, that welder really sounds good. What size welding wire are you using? Your spot welds look great. Take care and good luck with your project.
Hey It's an old husky 5hp 60 gallon from Home Depot. It works good. I had another compressive that's a 10hp "it's a beast" but the motor stopped working a while back.
Yes...I think I may have messed up....I try to align the deck lid tomorrow and see where I'm at...Thank for bring that to my action. It's been a while since I've done metal work so I'm bit rusty....trying to get back in the groove.
@@CTmoog I have first screwed my panels in the right position and tried the fit of parts like bumpers and the chassis to the heaterchannels before welding them. Hope you hit the correct position 🙏

Nice work! Enjoying your videos. Replacement panels for Ghias are so expensive and they don’t fit well so I admire your bravery!
Thanks Pete! 👍 I watched a few of your videos. Nice work man! It's not easy working on these old cars. Keep pushing forward.
@@CTmoog Thanks! Not easy but fun for sure! I can weld and sand body filler but a Ghia is definitely not the car to practice on, lol
Hey CT, not long ago you were learning to weld on Rusty and here you are doing "A level " stuff. Thanks for sharing and best regards from Ireland .

Hey Mike, I'll have to try one of those. 🙂
Hi CT, awesome more metalwork. Love it👍
Thanks Tim! I appreciate the support!
Since I’ve been watching you, you have really grown in your abilities. Good job.
Thank you. I've come a long way but sometimes it's hard to see the forest through the tress.

You don't see them on the road much anywhere. Trying to do my part. Thanks buddy! =)
@@CTmoog Oh yeah, of course! Good luck!
16 and 6.5 works well on that welder for sheet metal.
think about grinding before you cut. Cut where you can get a grinder in there.
Thanks Mike! That's what I tried today. It worked great.
I'm enjoying the new way of your work and posting videos. No new projects, a bit of work on this one, a bit on that one. 👍
Thanks Tim! That's the plan. Let's see how long I can stick to it! =)
CT, maybe a couple of strong bar magnets at the bag of your panels would hold them in place for easier working, freeing up your hands.
Yes I need some good strong magnets. I'll pick some up this week. Thank you!
I love the way you go about things.
Thank you!
Looks really good CT 👍
It's much easier to cut the battery trunk , but I would prefer to put the hole new part in.( not above)
Thanks man! 👍 I think I'll try to leave as much as the go metal as possible. Let's see what happens.
Nice job CT, Hope alls good with you and yours buddy, Keep up the fine work dude.👌

Hey John! Fitzee is awesome. I've waited many of his videos. I need to practice the cut and butt technique.
Fitzee is amazing the way he uses old rust to template new panels
@@PetesGhias He Use sensible methods

Keep as much of the OG battery tray as you can!
That's the plan! Thanks for the input!
Well done stay on this job. Going well
Thank you!
Hopefully the hurricane didn't give you trouble. We're still without power but thanks to AT&T we have cell service and internet back.

Yes but have you tried the boot lid before welding it ? 😮
dude....I think I messed up....I didn't even think about doing that...I'll have an update in couple days. Thank for the comment.
@@CTmoog oh dear……..well I’m not a welder …..but that’s a basic thing to do before welding it up! 😂😂😂

Hey Steve! Thank you! I'm using .023 wire. This Arccaptain welder works great.
put on top and build //as it has more steel is better to the body

Put it on top of the artisanal
Ok cool. thanks buddy! =)
magnets
good idea! =)
do you have a print to work off //for linement on body fit
I wish I did. I might be a bit off....We'll see in couple days.
Cut and tie into original metal

Please start using weld through primer. Supposedly “Steel It” is weld through also Seymour is trying to compete with Steel It

have you cut the sheet completely from the bottom, so you don't know where the line goes?

You welded in the left bumper mounting panel without having the hole in your rear panel? Thats risky 😬
yes, I might have messed up...I'll take a close look at it.

25:32 , cut the spot welds on the old piece and along the side of the piece that is already there , that is not on the new piece ,,,
Thanks for the tip. I will try that! =)
Go back to the Lincoln welder!
Do not just lay it over that will cause it rust big time, cut it like you said at first...
Thanks man I will do that.
