The best part: None of the aliens even remotely resemble earth animals. The few that have even the tiniest resemblance are immediately undermined by something completely different. Realistically speaking, that's pretty much what we'd find if we went looking for alien life and something actually turned up.

Evolution doesn't work like that, while I agree that extraterrestrial life won't look like the ones on Earth, they're not gonna look like what we see in the show.
Not gonna lie, the creature designs in the film are AWESOME and EPIC but the thought of such creatures existing or evolving is a bit of fantasy.
This is just my personal opinion though, I might be wrong and I might be right.
@@kaijuar2003 I mean… just go back to the Cambrian and imagine what Earth life might look like if chordates and arthropods had gone extinct back then and the land was instead settled by echinoderms or descendants of creatures like Opabinia. You wouldn’t be able to recognize shit. Yes, some things like fast-running legs or wings might convergently re-evolve, but the general bauplans and things like jaw-structures and sense-organs would still be extremely alien to us, because initial starting conditions have a huge influence on future conditions. This would be even more pronounced on an alien planet.
I would pay to see a sequel made with more aliens from Darwin IV and perhaps new robot characters
and have the new probe characters possibly try to make peace and convince the eosapians that the camera disc is not a threat and maybe try to find Leo and Ike’s body’s
Or have Ike come back online and explore the rest of Darwin IV.
You should also read the book it's an adaptation of.

Okay, they’ve made prehistoric documentaries, and now alien documentaries so now they just need a documentary about prehistoric aliens.

The documentary is awesome but the book is absurdly expensive!
The aliens presented in Alien Planet are all blind, all of them are relying on echolocation and other senses. They are the most accurate aliens in the media.

Traj According to the book, they aren't completely blind, but actually have infra-red sensors similar to earth's snakes, so they can at least see someone's heat signature. I btw completely agree with Aurelia and Blue Moon
How can they be "accurate" if we haven't found alien life yet?

The final aliens scared the s*** out of me when I was younger, lemme tell ya.
2:25 If you look carefully when the first probe deploys, you can see that the right stabilizer fin hasn't fully locked into place when it leaves the mother ship (the Von Braun). This is what causes the craft to break up when it enters the atmosphere.
I love that I found someone else who loves the stuff I love.
It has been pretty awesome finding out how many people out there are fans of these documentaries. Before I made these reviews I had no idea so many other people loved this stuff as much as me.

I actually owned the book "Expedition" as a kid which fascinated me. I really wished this documentary would have gotten a cartoon spin-off like The Future Is Wild did.
I thought this was actually real when i watched it for the first time, even now it still seems so realistic, like something similar to this could happen.

The book it's based on is awesome too.
Honestly, my only nitpick with the film is that I wanted to see more of Darwin 4; like maybe having Leo, Ike and maybe even a non-destroyed Balboa exploring the icy regions as oppose to just the forests, plains and mountains.
But don't get me wrong, this is still a great movie, and I do recommend it as a sci-fi flick. And hey, if my biggest nitpick is that I wanted more to be done in terms of exploration, that has to be a commendation for Discovery Channel's overall adaptation.
Alien Planet is one of my favorite fictional documentaries. The alien designs, technology, and science in Alien Planet are all so creative and amazing. It's a shame there aren't more documentaries like it.
The level of creativity in this documentary is astonishing
So a little detail the video did not quite get to is the tone and 'feeling' the film gives off. The way the film presents the drones with very human 'vibes' allows you to connect with the drones, to a surprising degree. The film then creates the alien world, that is so far from our own you can't help but feel unsettled. You begin feel for these human feeling drones exploring this subtly unnerving world. I can see why you didn't bring it up in the video as you really have to watch the film to get it. But it's one of the most unnerving, unsettling, lonely and just ALIEN movies I've ever seen. Truly worth the 2 hours.

3:10 I remember it was common in the early years of CGI for creatures to have too much "pastelly" shades, making them look more bland and less realistic.
its odd though that none of the creatures have eyes yet everything is bio luminescent

It‘s explained in the book that the bioluminescence is just an unintended side-effect of infrared heat-spots on their bodies. They see the heat, but are unaware that it also produces visible light

You know what? SyFy channel should do these. They can bring in teams to make up new worlds, or they can give this treatment to existing Sci-Fi (note the difference in spelling, ggggrrrr) worlds. They can take what are sometimes bare bones given in a book or movie and the team of scientists can fill it out.
Does the ecology of Dune, Barsoom, or Endor make sense? Can it be MADE to make sense?
This was a good review. This and your others have me wanting more shows like this, so I guess that tells you just how well you have done.

You know what would be cool....if discovery channel made a sequel to alien planet, I mean there are so many aliens from the book that they didn't include (probably because of running time) think about it they could go to biomes they we didn't see before like the arctic or dence pocket forests they can put more detail into the aliens and how they work, there's so much they can do.

I think my favorite thing about this movie was the buildup they gave to the aliens at the end. i spent amost the entire film wondering who was watching the probes before they finally met their makers
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid, and even now, it still makes me happy to watch.
The last five minutes of the movie was really unnerving in my opinion
That's probably because of how ridiculously *human* the Eosapiens were. Think about it: Up to that point, all the aliens we saw were still no more intelligent than wolves or birds here on Earth. Yeah, they looked weird and grew to tremendously giant sizes, but they still behaved in a way that animals on Earth do.
Not the Eosapiens. Obviously, they look nothing like us, but they *behave* like us, or at least behave like prehistoric humans. Not only can they carry and toss spears - downing even an apex Skewer in one throw - but can even *comprehend incredibly basic arithmetic* and count objects like very few creatures can. They can recognize a moving object as a projectile weapon and track a target persistently for miles without giving up. That puts them on a level above any other animal on Darwin IV. Look at the Skewer and Daggerwrist; they may look intimidating (because they are) and are incredible predators, but their behavior can still be predicted and analyzed like our lions and eagles. When they're hungry, they hunt animals, and get fierce when it's time to mate and use similar tactics when making the kill. They can be fooled, outsmarted and even killed with the right tools. Nothing too special.
The Eosapiens, however, add a level of unpredictability because *you don't know what the hell it's gonna do next.* When the Eosapien drops down and measures up with Ike, it's impossible to tell whether it's trying to make friends with Ike or is silently aiming where to stab its spear into him. You can't tell whether it's patiently waiting for the strange probe to introduce itself or if it's expecting some form of tribute. At least with the Skewer and Daggerwrist, you can still make predictions about its next actions and how to account for them. It acts and thinks almost like a human, and humans are already unpredictable and untrusting to other humans as it is without one side resembling giant floating squids with hands.
Can you review Extraterrestrial (also known as Alien Worlds)? It's a TV documentary like this, but arguably more scientific, as they build entire ecosystems based on a novel but plausible concept for a planet-star system. The special effects are also great - they got CGI, but they also got the people who do the special effects for Doctor Who to do practical effects. For one episode they built an entire model alien forest and it looks amazing.
This is a masterpiece!

One thing that confused me when watching this documentary was when they said that the planet was bigger then Earth and had a thicker atmosphere and yet had less gravity????

Other then that I wish there were more documentaries like this one... Maybe even a sequel to this one delving into more detail and maybe even introducing more creatures and plants.
Darwin IV’s atmospheric density apparently has to do with the evaporation of its oceans millions of years prior to human discovery, while the low gravity has to do with the binary star system it orbits. I don’t exactly know how mathematics of the latter work, but from what I gathered online, binary star systems can either increase or decrease gravitational pull on their satellites depending on their sizes and configurations.

That would be awesome. What would it even be about? A hypothetical world evolving to the space age from the ground up? Human astronauts discovering life on another planet? Either way, it sounds really cool, and someone should totally make that a thing!
I loved watching this growing up.
I saw the title and thought; what is that? Then I realized i've seen it. This was a very interesting show. I love how bizarre and truly alien everything was. If life were to be discovered on another planet it would look like nothing we've ever seen because it didn't evolve on Earth.
Since you already did a review of "The Future is Wild", maybe you could tackle "After Man: A Zoology of the Future", and the Japanese documentary film adaptation. Perhaps you could talk about some of the more outlandish and implausible concepts in the book, such as the descendants of rats becoming the top predators when we already have foxes, cats and stoats, which could easily occupy the same niche, rabbits replacing horses and antelope as the main grazing herbivores, the giant fully-aquatic penguins, the large bipedal bats, the monkey-like Striger (my least favorite creature in the book, ironically enough, since I'm a cat person), and others.An honorable mention I'd like to point out is the Reedstilt. It's a mammal that behaves sort of like a heron, that much I know, but the book doesn't go into detail on just what kind of mammal the thing evolved from. Personally, I can definitely picture the Reedstilt being a sort of derived platypus (not that platypi would last that long into the future or evolve into something like the Reedstilt without some serious anatomical changes, but we can imagine). You could also think of some ideas on how to make the book more plausible and up-to-date. Another good idea is to compare it to "The Future Is Wild" and talk about how well the two have held up with the ongoing march that is science. I happen to own the book, and while it is one of my favorites, it hasn't aged well.XP
Jo Cox Have you read The world of Kong: a natural history of Skull Island as it is very similar in its creative speculation of how a Cretaceous ecosystem would continue to evolve on an isolated island and how the species would interact with each other and their environment. There are quadrepedal alpine raptors, parasitic fresh water crabs that burrow in the skin, vulture like parrots and storks, bat like frogs, a crustaceanivorous mangrove dwelling theropod and many, many more.I f you enjoyed the film then it is likely you will enjoy this too as it really expands on the species shown in the film and introduces the plethora that didn't make the cut. Although finding the book may prove difficult and it can be somewhat expensive.
I was genuinely surprised you actually did a review of Alien Planet. I really enjoyed your thoughts on Discovery Channel's take on adapting Wayne Barlowe's book (which I never knew existed until sometime later) as a documentary.
I also really enjoyed your thoughts on the Probes Leo and Ike and their roles in the film, who were kind of the reason I watched it after discovering it. I overall really liked hearing your thoughts on this film.

They were made by Impossible Pictures, the people who made the Walking with series (Space Odyssey was originally going to be called Walking with Spacemen). Where they lightly theorized entire planets and a few plausible lifeforms. It's on Netflix if anybody didn't know about it and wanted to check it out.
I definitely recommend the original book, since it goes more into detail about the ecology and biology.

I enjoyed it!I think this is much more realistic than the usual “little green men with big eyes” that science fiction always portrays
This is definitely one of the more interesting documentary-style films out there
The creatures themselves are extremely creative in their physical design and behavior that makes them come off as something totally bizzare or "alien", yet has some familiarity to Earth life as they have very similar goals, and one in particular is the one goal that's most desired: survival
Even the story is very well-done and executed. It has that same concept of other-worldly exploration we're all familiar with, yet the way it's handled makes this film a very unique species of its own
Overall, I really enjoyed watching this documentary-style film for it's cleverly executed familiar-type story, the glorious visuals, and of course, the pure oddity of the concept of the animals themselves
I think it's cool that they could get Steven Hawking to be in this

having owned the book itself after I watched the series, I would have loved it this was based closer on the book. I'm presuming the budget would have been overblown, but I would have much preferred something akin to a full series featuring a character in the role of an explorer.

Alien Planet, The Future is Wild and Life After People all got me hooked on the genre of speculative biology when I was a preteen. Such fond memories!
Out of curiosity, would you review "March of the Dinosaurs"? It's basically a more Disneyish version of Alpha's Egg, only it takes place on Laramidia and it follows a Troodon and an Edmontosaurus.

There's a part in the movie where one of the scientists talks about how we take water for granted, and how it might actually be rare or unknown on another planet, BUUUT . . .
Hydrogen and Oxygen are both *very* common elements in the universe. It doesn't seem likely that a planet's life forms (like those in the movie) would evolve with *no* water.

One thing that always bugs me in this documentary is that the the size of the probes are unknown, so I don't know how big those creatures are.
In the beginning it said the arrowtongue is as big as a t.rex, so looking at the creatures and probes in the same shot, you can generally get the scale of the creatures.
I distinctly recall the probes being described as the size of dump trucks, and then you have the arrowtongue as well for a point of comparison.
