  • Lisa Gade reviews the new 2015 Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook. We look at the $899 Core i5 full HD non-touch model in this review. The XPS 13 has a 13.3” display and a full size keyboard yet it’s closer in size to an 11.6" or 12” laptop. It weighs 2.6 lbs (non-touchscreen, 2.8 lbs. for touchscreen models). The XPS has an updated, more angular design with the familiar aluminum top and a carbon fiber interior. It runs on 5th generation Intel Broadwell U series CPUs and is available with a matte 1080p non-touch or gloss QHD+ touch screen (both are “Infinity” small bezel Sharp IGZO panels). It’s available with 4 or 8 gigs of RAM, SSD drives and dual band WiFi 802.11ac.Pricing runs from $799 to $1,599. Battery life is impressive at 10 to 12 hours for the non-touch model. **Read our full written review here: www.mobiletechr...

Dear Lisa, I really like you and your reviews! Thank you for helping me keep up with the new technologies and decide on my new laptop! It is going to be the new Dell XPS 13. I studied all competitors (and I mean, ALL) and this one is a winner. Almost gave the prize to the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus, but the Dell just blew me away with its thin bezel and great battery life. Congratulations for your work, Lisa!

The secret to it all? Don't follow updates to laptops/tablets/etc for a long while after you've bought your laptop! That way you won't instantly fall in love with a new machine when you should be enjoying the machine you currently have!

I think if you are satisfied with your gadget and it meets your needs then stick with it and don't bother thinking about upgrading until you feel your gadget is dead.

Thank you for getting a review video up as fast as you did Lisa!! I just saw this model at the Microsoft store today and I was blown away by the beauty of that thin bezel, it is simply astonishing just how small the footprint of this laptop is in person. The screen however was very lackluster though, it was pretty dim and not sharp or very vibrant. I'm going to reserve judgement until I can get some hands on time with the 3200x1800 touch version, no stores seem to have them in around my area. I'm hoping you will review the qHD+ touch version soon.

I listen to a number of reviews of this product but really waited for yours and you didn't disappoint as always. Would like to see a smackdown with the X1 Carbon. No need for a MacBook Air smackdown, as it is out classed with this version. Thanks Lisa, as always, very good.

MobileTechReview Hi Lisa, thanks for the review!
    - Do you know whether these SSDs are *PCIe* SSDs as in the Lenovo X1 Carbon (2015)?
    - Can you compare the two laptops?
    - Can you also show their charger cables? I think Dell's is much smaller (not sure though) and that matters a lot: they say the laptop is that light but then they give you this heavy charger (I'm looking at you, Lenovo...), which should be taken into account as well when carrying around the laptop.
    Thanks a lot.

A great review as always, thank you! If you wouldn't mind, could you in the future also give the weights of the products in kilograms like you give the thickness in millimeters? That way people wouldn't have to do the conversion in their head or with a calculator so it would be more convenient.

Of course, smackdown would be great.
GJ to Dellfor making such a bezel-less front panel, though if I was designing the entire thing I'd probally go with the (optional) webcam on top and stereo speakers on the side. Bottom bezel though still needs some workout.
I heard rumours of some new Asus coming out, thin as **** they say, yet it features full-size USB ports. Those Broadwells are making a boom atm, it's bad time to be buying a laptop guys, I'd wait for a few months.

People who are interested in touch tend to buy 2 in 1 style laptops. The 1080p, matte screen version will get over 12 hours battery life in moderate use. A touchscreen will reduce the run time by hours. In addition, Windows 10 is right around the corner--I'm using the preview right now. Windowed Modern apps are so easy to use on a non-touch machine. Even with 8.1, you can boot to the Desktop and easily spend 99% of your time there.

The graphics in this laptop provided by the Intel HD 5500 GPU --NOT the 4400 from the previous generation. Just correcting a comment from a pervious person's post. The HD 5500 is a full 30% faster than the previous generation.
For example, HD 5500 is faster than the NVIDIA Tetra X1. The X1 is nearly TWICE as fast as the iPad Air 2's AX8 GPU... That's pretty impressive for onboard Intel graphics. The person who posted about the comparison before and stating that iPad Air 2 has faster graphics is clueless.

I bought the previous version of the Dell XPS 13 and got disappointed so many times in so many different ways. The keyboard back light makes a very weird noise, that disappeared when I turned the light off. The Bluetooth component was going on and off again and again without any reasonable reason. And when waking the computer up from sleep mode, the WiFi component most of the times was like disconnected, so the solution was either full restart or disabling and then enabling the component, via the device manager.
the BT problem and the light problem wasn't solved though.
Before buying the computer I wasn't able to find anything bad about that computer series, but when I got it I finally saw that my problems are common.
Hope Dell fixed those problems in this model, although I'm not going to have another Dell laptop. That's not what you expect while buying the most expensive Dell's laptop.

Dell hit a home run with this. It's dead sexy. It's nic to hear the trackpad works properly. OS X on Apple laptops set the high water mark for multitouch trackpad performance. It's absolutely essential for any laptop running Windows 8 or later...

Great review, as always, Lisa. The XPS13 is a very nice machine. However, the position of the built-in web-cam is a show-stopper for me. I know because of the thin bezel, Dell didn't really have any other option, but I wouldn't buy it for that reason alone. But, I have to say, it has a lot going for it, and I could see why someone might want to buy it.

***** I have the small battery version because it has a HDD. The other version that don't have an hdd has a bigger battery that should last 7 hours of normal use. I don't know what your "heavy" use is, but for me it means gaming or running virtual machines, in which case you shouldn't be doing this on battery anyway. But If you only intend to do office work then that's not heavy use.

Exact same model as this, going to use it for school, love an prefer mate against gloss, 1 thing sway me away from Macbook-pro are the glossy screen, the reflections and glare just yucks! I'm glad dell came out a 1080p Matte display! To be honest 4gb ram is more than enough, at least for me, if you're into intense apps, should be aiming others with at least 16gb.

    Hi Lisa, great review thanks.
I have a question regarding the screen (1080p). Some forums have been reporting the screen dims/brightens noticeably when changing from a dark/light background. This happens despite the adaptive brightness being turned off, along with the 2 panel refresh options in the intel centre disabled. This is on the latest new intel drivers. Have you noticed anything like this and if so was it very distracting?
    Many thanks

I adore the design of this, and I'm glad to see them trying to think outside the box, but I'd rather have a laptop the same size with a larger display and those tiny bezels, than a smaller laptop with the same size screen. But, I have an affinity for bigger screens, I suppose.

  • @luckyaway9665

Ok, you guys seem to always be helpful. I like Mac OS more than Windows 10, despite the fact that I've never used it and I do not want to limit myself to only the Macbook Pros. I'd like to avoid any Lenovo as I have had bad experiences with them, though my friend is loving his X1 Carbon.
I'll be doing some video editing as an amateur film maker taking courses and some gaming as Football Manager and Sam & Max and basically any point and click games.
It needs to be portable as I'll be taking it everywhere, even on walks and to school. If it could be a gaming laptop that could play the Witcher 3 it would be a plus, but I certainly do not expect those laptops to fit my budget/needs.
What laptops do you recommend with a 1400 pound (2170 dollars) budget?
PS It does not need to be one of the in the video.

Very neat looking machine! I too bad I just got my Thinkpad Yoga 12.5" and it needs to last me 3-4 years before I get another machine. Still love seeing what's new and on the market.

Even if Apple allows retina to filter down to MBA it'll be staring at an amazing form factor difference compared to the new Dell. Did you see that when Lisa placed the Dell on top of the Air? Holy Moley. Plus Apple may feel compelled to do a new gen MB Pro with some astounding improvements unless they'd tolerate a retina Air cannibalizing Pro sales. The market for the Pro isn't just for those who need serious productivity power. I'd venture that many Apple lovers spring for the Pro just to have the retina. Thanks Lisa. Beautiful review while dressing in blue!

Thanks for the video. Any idea why Dell doesn't include ANY instruction manual at all?? I have to try to figure out how to use some of the features of the keyboard myself. They give you a technical manual for repair and swopping, but neglect to give a user's manual.

I'm frankly quite happy with the vast array of existing applications that run on Windows and have absolutely no need for a MacBook Air. The vast majority of software out there actually doesn't run on Mac OS and I see no reason to buy a Mac and then go through the trouble of running Windows on boot-camp, or as a VM (not to mention having to pay even more money for another operating system license) just so I can have access to programs written for a more popular OS. Why? So I can have a silver product with an Apple logo on it?
That no longer makes sense with the products that are out that run Windows now. Great looks, excellent performance, great battery life and vastly more software and gaming choices right out of the box for work, school an play. Don't get me wrong. I admire many of the things that Apple has brought to the table over the years, but their OS has never been all that compelling to me as a daily driver. I've used MacBooks for extended periods, had OSX setup at various times running in VMs for testing purposes and even had a Mac Mini for a short time--but for Office applications, gaming and even media I still prefer the flexibility, power and hardware/form factor choices that Windows computers have continued to provide.

Full-size SD and the card sticking out 1/3 of the way? That's so 2010... Well-hidden micro-SD, that's the way to go, in my book (and on my Surface Pro 3... :) ) For the rest, it looks like an excellent ultrabook, although the colors don't quite match those of the SP3 (they're more subdued, or washed out, at least on the FHD screen. I haven't seen the high-res one yet.) I wouldn't buy it to edit photos.
But then again, once you go 2-in-1, it's kinda hard to go back to a traditional laptop. It's soooo nice to be able to remove the keyboard when you're reading a book, watching a video, browsing the net or playing a touch-enabled game.

Great review as always, Dell got it spot on with respect to display area, but they did miss the point of webcam location, if they had that much space at the bottom, probably they can push the display down a bit and stick webcam on the top, webcam modules are as small as 5mm wide these days. I guess dell might have already thought about it though.

Lisa, there's a MAJOR issue with the QHD displays on the XPS 13. I've purchased 4 of them all with the same "blotchy patterns".
It's unreal really, $1,400 after tax ultrabook with this issue. It's pushed me to look at Mac again for my computing needs.

Dell should have increased the top bezel to accommodate the web cam. Good thing the XPS has good viewing angles cause you have to move the screen to adjust the camera view.
