If you ever bring it back to Augusta, I'd love to see an Airbike in person. Planning on restoring an Ultrastar project myself. I always liked the Airbike because you sit on it like on a motorbike almost, and I ride motorbikes all the time as my daily drivers. Happy flying.
After flying low on my Yamaha R3 for a few years, I decided I want a bike that can fly a little higher, LOL. I think I found it. What kind of engine is powering it? Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for posting this video. That is too much fun, toodling around at a few hundred feet AGL, checking out the neighbors' back yards and who's sunbathing around the pool. I'm glad the FAA adopted the EAA's recommendations on Sport Pilot category aircraft and pilot qualifications, since it opens up this kind of flying for fun. Regular aircraft are so much more expensive than they used to be, and not because they provide better performance. Rock on.
This is brilliant and reminds me that this was the sort of airspeed that Bleriot experienced when crossing the English Channel in 1909 with a similar horsepower engine.
I just bought an Airbike that looks identical to this one. Haven't flown it yet since the weather here in Colorado has been nasty. I'm a Mooney driver with 350 hours, but no tailwheel time. Is the Airbike squirly on landings? I'll be flying off a dirt road as well, will it be forgiving like grass? Keep the video's coming.... I love seeing the pilot AND the airplane together in the video.
what about the power line on final is it cut or you are going about a few inches from wheels ,,I don't see it going under but the perspective to the post at your left is scary close ,,,great flying machine by the way. congrats..
very nice indeed !just when i think iv'e seenit all another one pops up.i have say you guys in america can make any thing fly.that air bike is awsome .
Looks like fun, especially being warm enough to be that high up in altitude, obviously at flight speeds, wearing nothing but athletic shoes, shorts and a t-shirt. I would love to try my hand at a machine like that some day. Would of course definitely want some instruction before hand.
I had to comment on this.... I've been flying certified aircraft for many years. I bought an Airbike and when those tires lifted off the runway...I WAS HOOKED! Low and slow is the most fun flying I've ever done. It's like riding a motorcycle in the air. If you like motorcycles and airplanes....you'll love the airbike.
Did you ever get a wasp or bee up your pants leg? Over a number of years riding motorcycles I've had that happen to me a few times, really hurts! Kind of hard to pull to the side of the road on an Air Bike though...
Looks like a beautiful time to fly! Very jealous right now. Looking into paramotoring though, so hopefully I'll be able to relate within the next year.
That's actually a really good fucking idea, dude. - My first thought the second I saw this video. All planes have been based around car like frames. To make one with a bicycle frame is genius!
Why do ya'll call this ultralight aircraft an "Airbike"? Where's the bike part of this bird. Looks like your dad is having a lot of fun & does look fun. Thanks for sharing this video. Take care. Rodney
can I use my rotax bombardier 532 engine, in one of this airframe, airbike tandem,,, thanks... where do you recomend me to bye one of this thanks... excuse my inglish...
Looked close to the power or phone lines on that final approach. I would fly this but ONLY with a rescue chute in case of airframe failure. Cool video.
@h2otek (from Dad) Legal Part 103 AirBikes have flown, but with engines that were rather marginal. The AirBike in the video is an Experimental - Light Sport Aircraft (ELSA). An FAA-issued Light Sport Pilot certificate is required in order to fly it. For an ultralight similar to this, consider the Legal Eagle.
From the video it looks like the landing speed is very high on that plane. Is that true or is it just a optical Illusion from the angle of the camera etc?
where can i find such a veichle? i really want to buy one!!!!!!!! I'm fascinated by it... what is the price, where can i get one, and what is the name of this model.. ? and do they have a vertical landing&take-off model?
what makes it experimental? i thought if you bought plans and built it and it was under 250~ lb it was an ultralight and could be flown without a licence
The max weight for a legal Part 103 ultralight is 254 lbs. This plane is just under 300 lbs. That puts it into the Light Sport class. As an amateur-built plane, it is Experiment, hence an Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (E-LSA). Once the plane gets out of the ultralight class, at least a Sport Pilot license is required in order to fly it.
I am with you, but the problem is, that you would need to make a tradeoff by getting rid of the safety belts. Cause if you lose control I am pretty sure you don't really have the time to unbelt. So you are basically left with ballistic parachute or safety belts. I would go for the belts, cause its way more probably that something goes wrong during start or landing and in this case belts are just more useful.
+Dave SI know nothing about that sort of thing but in reference to a parachute, don't they make a rocket chute that deploys the chute very quickly?I ask because I just watched the crazy guy strapped to a couple of vacuum cleaners climb to 5000 ft but used a rocket deployed parachute.
Just the fact he's not even considering showing the whole flying device not even once on the ground. So we have to guess how it looks like. Selfishness
At my last company, we had a pilot that left his keys in the lock for the nose bay. ( It was a cessna jet)About half way through the flight, the light for the 'door unlock.' came on. The captain asked him where his keys were, and after a pat of his pocket, the FO realized that his keys are now somewhere in Indiana. Anyway, there is a dent on the engine cowling from it. He almost took out an engine.
I have an interview on the Airbike, but need some B roll, hoping to get your permission to use your video, will, of course, acknowledge the source - thank you for your considerations. The Ultralight Flyer ua-cam.com/users/ultralightnews
Do you know if the guy who bought your Dads' Air-Bike wants to sell it? That is really a nice looking Air-Bike. Thanks for posting the flying video of your Dad, it is one of my favorite flying videos right now.
@godseykj : (from Dad) Some tailwheel time in something like a Champ or Cub would be highly recommended. While there are some differences in the way the AirBike handles on the ground, it is still a taildragger, and must be treated as such. It isn’t difficult. It is just different from a plane with tricycle gear. Most of my fixed wing time was logged in Aeronca 7AC Champs.
That's why I love ultralights, small and relatively affordable, however, they do look rickety!
If you ever bring it back to Augusta, I'd love to see an Airbike in person. Planning on restoring an Ultrastar project myself. I always liked the Airbike because you sit on it like on a motorbike almost, and I ride motorbikes all the time as my daily drivers. Happy flying.
Augusta ?
What a great way to end the day! Just a leisurely fly by in the country side and then home again! Way to go go Dad and keep it up (so to speak)!
I congratulate your dad in his successful flight. Cheers!

Rotax. I would have to ask Dad what horsepower
@@gheegrose Thanks.
A Rotax 447 with a single venturi Bing carburetor. Single ignition. Pull starter.
@@gheegrose Much appreciated. Thanks for the info!
No parachute, WW1 type mindset. This guys got a set of balls, I can tell by the way he sits. Awesome!
This is one of the moments when you have more fun than fear :D I love flying

I saw this aircraft when I flew in and met John (owner of the airpark). I would sure enjoy meeting your father when he is back in the area.
retired airline pilot? dude can fly really well
This is extremely cool! One of the best vids on UA-cam!
Great video...you can't get any closer to the freedom of flight with a motor than that!

how do you control the ruder ? with the left hand ? And I didn't see the flaps on the wings, dam !!! that thing is incredible !!

They call it an Airbike because you don't ride in it, you ride on it....like a motorcycle. Its a blast to fly.
Very cool little aircraft. And the kit seems very affordable.
Cool video!
Where did you fly?
Kansas?
few questions, do u need a license to fly these, how much do they range in, and where can i maybe find one?
He is so Calm, NICE LANDING.
BTW, Where is the Ejection Seat and the Parachute, would any of that help ??
Does this thing glide when engine is off? No parachute for emergency use?
What is the altitude this thing can go up to?
How many RPM has that motor??? and what about its power is it something like 20kw or more?
What is the max. pilot weight and top speed for this aircraft? Thanks
How high up can that fly? Is there a limit in height? Distance?
qual motor o senhor usou nessa joia?

Groundspeed less than 30 mph, even less with a headwind.
what's the cost for one of these?

Soooo coool! 👍👏🏼😉👌🏼🌻. Sad 😢 now, Oshkosh air venture cancelled 2020🥴
Thats an awesome little aircraft, nice landing too. True seat of your pants flying, Well done.
What kind of engine is it, please?
Looked like he got a little close to those power lines there at the end! Still would love to fly one,
I believe the power line is buried on the approach end of runway. Who paid for this change? How much would it cost?
Kinda reminds me of that guy in mad Max and how you go to the bathroom in that thing lol good job
where can one get airbike plans
how about a parachute? or are airplanes like ships in relations to captaining them? :)
Love the helmet!
Granted, you have a light sport aircraft license. But can you fly aircraft as this one with a ppl?
Just one question: where can i get one?!
what is the value of an aircraft like this friend?
what makes it experimental? i thought if you bought plans and built it and it was under 250~ lb it was an ultralight and could be flown without a licence
The old pro is just at home in that thing that's one cool cat!
Great vid so clear and very smooth, loved it! Thanks for sharing

I'd love to fly this sort of thing - but I would absolutely require a ballistic parachute....
At that low of an altitude a parachute would be worthless....... It would deploy right about the time you hit the ground.

If you don't know what a word means, don't assume it's not important.

so did you just miss the telephone wires or were they not installed yet? @3:14
I want one!
As a pilot you always keep an eye out for an emergency landing spot.

I need to get one of these and attach a paintball turret to it :P
These things are awesome, but my only problem with it is that it has to have a runway, so I think helicopters are more of my type of thing....
That thing is Bitchin! I love it. I had a helmet like that once. Go Navy!
Whew! Looks cool (though I'd prefer to have more plane around me)!
How much and where do I get one?
Only thing i'd mind here is the terrible motor sound, other than that, it's really cool!

whats the maximum range?

YAHH BUDDY ! loveing it
Hey did you actually SEE those power lines short final????
very cool! i want one!!!
This seems like a good design
nice toy can I have the drawings???

There is underground power in line with the runway.

the great dream of flying becoming reality. amazing.
how much the horse power?
where is this...?
Beechwood air Park. Off Snake Rd. Limestone County
+gheegrose thanks, my guess was great lakes region
Forgot to add.....Alabama. :)
+gheegrose yeh google was my friend. thanks !
how much price wize?
sweet. very cool I have a great place like that where I fly my 80cc 30 percent extra rc. I dream of a chance to someday fly ;-)
can you power off and glide landing ?
it's so nice to fly like that
Awesome video, folks... don't see how ya can have more fun!
I like the concept but I would rather have a slightly wider cockpit and my legs inside
Looks like SO MUCH FUN! I'm on my way to my PPL, but from what I've heard, you just need a sport license for this (ultralights).
All ya need is a driver's licsence and proper training,,,4000hr+ irl pilot here,,,,

I read the AirBike was really dangerous compared to other ultralites, due to the design of its structure.
Straight up Snoopy! I like it though.
A stick? Shouldn't this thing have a handlebar? Way cool, would love to fly one.
Even if there was an engine failure im sure he just stick his foot forward and give the engine a good kick!
The power lines are underground service in line with the runway.
this is sooooo awesome
Wonder how good it can glide if the engine would cut out.
Excellent Gheegrose!
3:10 isnt it a little risky with those power lines there?
i notice somthing flapping around above your right boot @ 2.45 min.
