We have been car campers for so long it’s second nature for us to fill up the Jerry cans and not think twice about it. But, with proper cleaning and plenty of filtration, I don’t worry too much about using the onboard water for drinking and cooking.
@@USS.Overlander if…when we need to clean it, it’s normally a gallon or so and a few drops of bleach and then just shake the devil out of it and then dump it and let it evaporate out. Next I’m looking at either a pre filtration set up or a lifesaver Jerry can ($$$) for a primary source.
I have question, I thing vinegar is corrosive to aluminum tanks. You may want to check on this. Your tank is made of aluminum. Hope this helps, great job on cleaning your system.
Reading through the comments on the video I linked (and used for reference, looks like the recommendation is 2 gallons of 30% and fill the rest up with water - good news is that my 4 gallons of 5% didn't exceed that! Good point, filling the tank with 30% overnight may be too corrosive and wouldn't be recommended.
Not really a subject matter expert on this, but for water filtration systems in general, why not just carry a Berkey water filter along. You could fill it up with pond water and drink it - I wouldn't, but you could.
On board filtration is definitely an option! The trade off is cost, space, weight, and there is still maintenance to do (filter replacements, flushing, etc). I would say that even folks using an on board should still sanitize their tanks annually... but all that matters at the end of the day is that your system is functional and you're drinking safe water!
Nice to have a dump station at the house 👍🏼
It sure is, and ours happens to be exactly where we'd park our rig either way! We got lucky on that one ✨
I don't drink out of my tank but do cook shower and clean. Good tip on fresh water tank maintenance thanks.
Glad it was helpful, happy adventuring!

you should use the bleach method in your Jerry cans too!
