I like to plan. I’m debating on getting that app. Not sure I need it yet. OnX is another one, mainly for the public land use. That’s definitely for later. I plan my trips at work because….. I can 😂
Do it 😂
the energy I need in my life 🤣
They don’t salt. I’d assume not because it would never end 😂. The world would run out of salt if they did
they actually use sand to maintain the roads and most parking lots!
Love the channel! What kind of camp chair is that? The red one you are using by the fire. Looks comfy. I may need to invest in one of those.😊
Picked it up on sale at a random co-op store in Texas 😅 Look for an "oversized padded camp chair" - it is SO comfortable and 100% worth the investment.
Ice in Alaska? Imagine that 😂
you know me, out here making amazing scientific discoveries 🤣🤣
Keep up videos coming = 👍
Thats nuts.....you better have a lot of backup...pew...bear spray...dog....
None of the above! Lol sometimes you just gotta full send on adventure with only carry-on approved items and do the best you can.
Definitely chilly but beautiful views for sure 👍🏼
Enjoy the drive!
it was breathtaking!!!
One day, I too will do this! 🤞❤️🇦🇺🦘
Merry Christmas 🎄
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and yours!
Not to burst your bubble. but that heat tape is doing NOTHING if it's not TIGHT against the metal. You gotta get that secured better, and then wrap it in something like reflectix, or foam, or SOMETHING. Hold that heat in.
absolutely valid point! we got a LOT better at wrapping as time went on, and ended up using a trash bag + thinsulate and reflectix sleeve + trash bags to cover the whole spigot and keep our little sleeve from getting wet from leakage and/or rain. Definitely not something we realized was necessary right away!
@@USS.Overlander I realized after I posted that I sounded like a jerk. Definitely wasn't trying to be a TOOL.. But just speaking from my own experience! LOL. Glad you learned before it became an EMERGENCY! Keep on truckin!
you didn't sound like a jerk! The whole point of the video was to educate, and I'm really glad you popped in with solid advice - I actually pinned your comment so hopefully other folks that are new to winter RVing see it! And hey, if we haven't learned anything in the year since this footage was filmed, we're doing something wrong 💜
Super proud of you and can’t wait to see what’s next. Old bagels and Taco Bell are a staple of any vegan road trip.
I never knew Alaska was cold. These people on UA-cam have been lying to me 😂 It’s a rental, it’s fine 😂 I am surprised there’s not more snow ❄️ honestly. Kayaking 😂 PASS….it sure is pretty up there. I can’t wait to visit Alaska. Good luck 👍🏼
apparently the past few weeks have been unseasonably warm, so way less snow piled up than normal at this time of year!
I'm so proud of you.
🥰🥰🥰
We have 2 Huskies, too. Our female is black & white, the male is brown & white. They don't have beds because they sleep on the bed & couch.
Our spoiled girls each have their own couch at home, but Daisy likes to lay in between our seats in the RV cab while we drive so we got the travel bed to keep her nice and comfy!
They are gorgeous!!! My loki is beautiful as well I would love for them too meet!!!
what a handsome boi!!!
Good thing the car told you that. How else would you know 😂
safety first 🤣🤣
Hope you Cover/ insulate the heated tape. I have had these fail
Glad you mentioned that! On this same trip after I filmed this, we started wrapping thinsulate and a trash bag over the spigot and heat tape 🫡
Both sides of the coin can be scary as hell but either way, you won’t regret the time spent on this chapter of your story.
either way it's gonna be quite the adventure!!
Wow that’s great news. Dress warm, it’s cold 🥶 up there this time of year 😂 Well if you get the job, get an extra spot next to your Rv, we’re coming to Alaska when I retire in 21 months and I’d love to meet you both. What kind of work is it? Computer 💻 work? Good luck 🤞🏼
We'll see how it pans out!!!
Cool..yes, cool and not cold ! Excellent job and a lot of work that will pay off in warm comfort. I have seen different solutions and those who allow the wind tunnel under their rv to keep their cold air circulating...The products used and snaps will be an efficient use of time and energy. THANK YOU for sharing.
so glad it was helpful to you!!! Safe and happy adventuring!
A roof is a roof! You got a place to lay your head. You got this.
things could be much ✨much✨ worse!!
sometimes things suck. crying about it doesnt help. you are living in reality girl. we love to see it 👏🏻
Good luck with all this. I'm holding the vision that - in hindsight - it will be the best thing(s) that could have happened!!
🫂 Thank you! The upside to this situation is that our lives have unlimited potential to look completely different soon!
Well I’m sorry to hear this ☹️ luckily for me I will never be out of work. People are dying to see me 😂 (dark humor) well I hope this all works out for you both. Keep your head up 😊 I winterized ours. Just blew the lines out with air and filled the traps and tanks with some pink stuff. We’re not done yet. We got a trip in December and Florida in February. Plus I need an oil change before Florida so I’ll have to drive it. I don’t have a cover and won’t get one since we’re leaving in 22 months for FT. All my water lines and tank are inside so my water won’t freeze. I added a 30a plug to my house and I have used a space heater in mine too before I leave so it doesn’t freeze. My little heater warms it up well since we’re small. When we get back from our next trip it will give me the opportunity to use my portable air compressor and pressure regulator to winterize it again. So if I need to do it on the road one day, I’ll have the ability to do it. Another driveway dry run to work the bugs out 👍🏼 Take care
Check out Todd's video on winterization and why he doesn't believe in the air compressor method 🤔 ua-cam.com/video/13JfxhVssiI/v-deo.htmlsi=sYVnU7WWxMp32wRq curious what your thoughts are!!!
@ he’s definitely through. I’m a tanked WH so I just bypass it and drain it. My elbows and connections are brass not plastic also. I have used the pink stuff in my lines last year with 1.5 gallons. Local dealers only blow them out and charge a fortune 😂 so this year I just blew them out. I did open my low point drains till air was blowing out. Did the outside shower and everything inside. Guess I’ll see in a few weeks when I refill the fresh tank and pressurize the system 🤞🏼I never put the pink in the fresh tank. Too hard to get out honestly. Looking at PEX tubing and how durable it is and hard to freeze I think I’m ok. I did put a lot of air through it. Once I fill the fresh tank and the system again, I’ll put an electric space heater in there obviously. I’m debating on putting 2 shut off valves to my outside shower. I won’t use it in the winter and I can drain it and stuff batt insulation in the area as it’s not insulation well at all. Also the fresh water hook up door can get some batt insulation stuffed in there. I’m working on an insulated curtain between the cab and Rv. No need to heat or cool the cab when parked in more extreme weather conditions. It gonna be cold when we head to Pennsylvania in a few weeks. Propane is full for heat. I have found to leave the bathroom door open or it gets real cold in there 🥶 Just trying to work the bugs out before we go FT 👍🏼
once you get your cab blocked off, the RV door/stairway is going to be the weak link - go ahead and get enough of your heavy duty cab insulating fabric to hang a curtain over the door too 👉👉
Winter slows a lot of adventures down so let it be a time to get ahead of some other things and then when the thaw hits… the next chapter. Until then, you can continue to shock people with your ability to learn and retain knowledge on how RVs work.
Really hoping for that "we're moving to Alaska" adventure
I’m impressed with your understanding of all this rv info.
thanks! hope it was a helpful video for you!
Super Smart 👌 👍
looks great. Is the roof also insulated?
Not yet - I added some foam insulation panels around the "garage"/bed frame and I have pipe insulation on any pipes running external walls, but the floor/walls/ceiling are still factory issue.
Nicely done, I'm working with a similar small RV and need to do something similar for cold conditions. Seeing what you've done is very helpful and much appreciated! I've already had to deal with frozen water lines, even with skirting I think I really need to re-route them- it's almost as if the manufacturer wanted them to be as exposed as possible! Winter camping is fun :)
I wish I'd also mentioned that we added tank heaters before this trip! between the ambient heat off those and the small space heater under the skirt, we didn't have any frozen lines.
I’d be curious to know. Not that I plan on camping in those temps and I don’t have room to store a skirt kit. Thankfully all my water lines and water tank are interior
Did you get a temperature reading under the Rv? It definitely keeps the wind out and a heater under it will keep it above freezing. I don’t have an intro or outro 🤷🏼♂️🤣 probably something I should work on I guess.
No, but I wish I had! We hit mid-teens overnight that trip, with the tiny space heater under the rig and a plug in radiator running inside, we actually woke up *sweltering* a time or two. I'd really love to get back out this winter and film a more scientific approach with some hard data on how well the skirt/lower heater/etc actually changes the internal temp!
It’s a really good, mobility and budget friendly option for those who pick up and go. I also like how it provides others either more options when they take on a similar project…myself included.
now I'm wondering how effective a skirt would be on a four runner...
@ 🤔
OMGoodness - This was an awesome list. I don't know how you came up with such a diverse list, but it's excellent. Thanks!! Jude
We had plenty of mistakes to pick from to make the list 😅🙈
Wow great channel, subscribed!
How kind of you to say!!! Thanks for the sub, happy adventuring💜
One time we were doing the Tx to Tn drive in December. Got to the campsite late and had to set up the tent in the 38° rain with nothing more then headlamps and room temperature pilot coffee. It was an added twist to our adventure.
not the room temperature pilot coffee ☠️☠️☠️
Arriving at dark really sucks 🤦🏼 I always do a 360 before I go. Start low and look high as I make the loop. Checking and touching everything. 3-3-3 is a good rule. Yeah ya cant ever get a spot 🤷🏼♂️ it can be hard. Have a plan A, B and C. As long as I can get water, I’m good. Or a dump. Honestly I don’t NEED electricity unless it’s hot 🥵 I try to always check the fridge and all cabinets. Pillows are fine. If it’s cheap I will be ok….i do need some electrical hookup 😂 but yes trust a lot of reviews
We definitely prefer having power + water, we could technically run our generator to be self sufficient, but it's SO loud!!! We'd really love to get solar rigged up to expand our site options.
I’m sure you have an onan Rv generator and they can be a bit noisy 😂. It’s not hateful but mines under my bed but we’ve yet to run it in at night fortunately. I don’t remember if you have any lithium batteries but they are a great thing to have. I’m currently at 200ah and a 2k inverter. It does everything I ask except run the AC. Keurig, lights, fans, water pump, microwave and fridge. I’m probably going to add more amp hours to it but I’ll never have enough power for AC so I’ve given that idea up. I’m going to add a ground panel for solar to my current setup. It’s definitely something to consider and save up for the good stuff. Do it once and do it right 👍🏼
We have the basic "comes with the RV" house battery, but no upgraded lithium and/or solar yet. We'd really love to upgrade to a mini split, and enough solar/battery to run it consistently... but that'll be a ways down the road (pun intended)
@ a mini split and able to run it would be a dream. I don’t have enough space for that. Your definitely does. 👍🏼
i'm finding the rv life trip wizard much easier on the laptop but not so much on the app with my phone. Are there any tips for using the app?
honestly, I find myself using the website in browser on mobile as much as I use the actual app - especially for browsing/planning. I wish I had better advice for you!
Breaker bar works instantly
for sure, it's about time to start expanding our tool collection!
While this is important info, King of the Hill has also given me some brain rot when it comes to the word 'Propane'. All I hear is Hank Hill xD
I actually can't believe I didn't make a single Hank Hill reference the entire video
I have a rug. Never used it. Probably gonna get rid of it 😂 Gloves? Never heard of them 😂 Lucky for me I have a built in surge protector and energy management system. Lots of good stuff 👍🏼
We set out the rug for the dogs... even though they usually prefer cold pavement or the mud 😅 they did like having it in the desert/out west instead of laying in the sand
We've had our (new to us) RV for 7 years and only cleaned the compartment once. We did install a fiberglass screen on the inside of the fridge cover using a hot glue gun - no critters can get through and the unit works fine.
we have a screen on our water heater vent, I'm sure it would be better to have one on the fridge compartment too!
@@USS.Overlander Just get some fiberglass "cloth" that's used for window screens - rough cut it and get yer glue gun. unless you burn yourself on the hot glue its easy peasy.
My Norcold control board half quit. Worked on gas, not on electric. UA-cam university to the rescue 😂 I tested it and ordered a new board. My compartment was also dirty. I vacuum it out. Haven’t messed with the burner tube, probably wouldn’t hurt to clean it. I have messed with the water heater. The propane was not mixing properly and blowing black smoke. Simply adjustment and it was fixed. It’s always something 😂
if you're not cleaning it you're repairing it 🤣🤣
While you have the cover off your refrigerator, check screws holding outer frame. I have changed my screws to stainless steel. The screws had started to rust. Shine light up refrigerator chase. Look for anything that could block airflow. If refrigerator is on a slide pull top cover off and check for cobwebs at exhaust. If refrigerator is not on slide, pull cover at roof and check for cobwebs.
Great advice! We'll be doing some roof maintenance soon, I'll be sure to pull the top cover and have a look while I'm up there!
The idea of a programme burning fridge makes total sense but is blowing my mind
The line is drawn at maintenance - I can take care of one, but I sure can't explain how fire keep beer cold...
Seems obvious but it’s never crossed my mind 😬 The computer duster is a really good idea! I’m guilty of grabbing the air compressor or shop vac and this is something that you can keep in your vehicle for emergencies that takes up very little space.
Yet another reason our dream build will have an onboard air compressor!!!
@@USS.Overlander we currently have a Viair set up we keep in the tool box. It’s not permanent but for a 4Runner, it works. Our big build will totally have permanent onboard air.
The vent cap is an easy fix and most people are already missing them 😂. We camped at some NF campgrounds before and I like them. Some have pit toilets and trash cans. Found one with a dump station and one had a water pump. It’s primitive but decent. I don’t mind paying a few bucks.
I'm actually hoping to get the vent cap replaced today or tomorrow 🫡
Is this one of the places that flooded from hurricane helene
this area received major storms and some flooding, there is a bit of damage from wind - but there wasn't huge destruction and the dam wasn't breached. The pure devastation occurred farther east.
