You’re not a big fan of Vagrant Story, Valkyrie Profile or Chrono Cross? Those are 3 that I often see on top ps1 JRPG lists but you didn’t even put on a top 10 WITHOUT final fantasy. I’d be interested to hear your take on why you don’t like them as much as these others.

Lunar is my favorite games hands down. Tales of Eternia is pretty high up there too. I keep hoping that they both will get the Grandia treatment and be ported to the Switch

I would have made Suikoden 2 the #1 spot. Retrospectively, it is probably one of the greatest story-driven games of all time, with among the best characters and base-building mechanics ever devised.
Man, he hit it out the park with this list! Legaia is one of my all time faves! I still own Lunar Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue. Back when they packed games with amazing booklets and little trinkets.
I love Suikoden 2, it’s one of my personal favorite games of all time. I just love the army building mechanic and the story is more personal then just some God being an asshole and killing people.
Some great PS1 RPG's not on this list, but I feel like Valykrie Profile or Legend of Dragoon could have earned a spot here, but hey, not my list. I appreciate the dedication to classic JRPG's either way.
Valkyrie Profile would be in the top 3 on my list. Legend of Dragoon is good, but I don't care much for having every battle be about quick time events.
Games in the mid 90s to the very early 2000s were easy as fuck, even without guides. The most difficult of games didn’t start coming out until around 2003, with the release of Nocturne. It got even worse in 2004 with Ninja Gaiden.
I got Suikoden I and 2 when they came out. Finally beat 2 recently. My favorite. Playing Final Fantasy 9 now. I missed it when it came out and it is So good😱💗

I still hold out hope that one day they'll make a Breath of Fire game with 3's dragon gene system, and 4's combo mechanics and ability to use the entire party (BoF3 constantly removing a member of your party to put Nina back in was such a pain in the ass). It may be too much to hope for some beautiful spritework at this point, but maybe some clever cel-shading...? That BoF6 reveal was just...heartbreaking. I sincerely hope the franchise doesn't end there...

Suikoden 2 is such a masterpiece man. I will never fall out of love with that game. Some games I have returned to and see the flaws in more clearly now. But Suikoden 2 is just as amazing today.

Star Ocean the Second Story is still my favorite game of all time (just look at the username XD) . So much nostalgia. Have to say i have to agree with most of your list, if not the order. Love your content!
It's my favorite game of all time also. And dias is my favorite character. Air slash w/ bunny shoes is op . Got me through alot of the cave of trials. I've probably played through this game 10+ times . With every combination of characters possible. I get full proficiency with all killer moves everytime lol

@@mikeclem1 The first time i stole the bunny shoes i was like "WTF is this" and out of curiosity i equipped them, only to never unequipped them again. Also probably the thing i love most about the game is each time you play there are so many different scenes you could see depending on who is in your party that even after the 10+ play throughs ive done so far i still sometimes stumble on a new private action i havent seen before.
@diazflac07 You know there is also a version of bunny shoes with a good defense rating later on in the game yeah? :P We need Star Ocean: The Second Story remaster on new consoles or even PC, but even better would be a real sequel to it, no Star Ocean can stand close to it.
Oh man, this list is perfect. I honestly feel that both Lunar remakes on the PSX had the best writing of all RPGs in that era (including Vagrant Story).
I did not play all of the JRpGs on psx, but my personal favorites were all pretty early in the generation, Suikoden 1 and 2, Vandal Hearts, Wild Arms. Xenogears was good but the plot kind of fell apart by the end, I really like Chrono Cross except for all the filler characters. Never played Legend of Dragoon or Grandia but I think I would enjoy those. Lunar is great but I played it on Sega CD first so i don't think of it as a PSX game.
Ahhh, Xenogears. It really says something about the game and story that it has stuck with people for so long even with the end turning out the way it did. Could you imagine what it would be like have the chance to sit down and play the "full" game the way they had originally intended? Man those were the days, truly the "golden age of RPGs" so to speak.
I've played and beaten suikoden 1 , but didnt get to suikoden 2. I was mad cuz I used a modded ps2 and wasnt able to transfer my data via memory card so I didnt even play it lol
10: Yeah, I used to have that, regret trading it away. What a classic game it is. 9: This game, along with 3, are 2 of the finest JRPGs ever made. And holy shit does 4 have some cool party members. And the Art Style and Soundtrack are amazing. 8: Haven't played. 7: The game that game me into the genre. I watched my older cousin play it and HAD to have it. The music, the art style, the characters, THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE YOUR PARTY MEMBERS, the combat, everything about it I loved and still do. I hate that there are so few like it. And I wish Square Enix would go back to what made the series works, needs a Reboot probably due to the one twist. 6: Another game system that is friggin' awesome and I wish more devs would take inspiration, so many good ideas and most of them executed well. 5: This game is long as balls, but it is a very unique premise, building up your WORLD instead of a base is pretty unique as premises go. 4: This was a game I traded in, and unlike most examples, I re-bought it later on so I DO have a copy still. I still haven't gotten the Switch port, But I'm probably gonna fix that relatively soon, as this is also a friggin' gem. 3: Best game ever made period. I don't know why it's only number 3. ;) 2: Haven't played, but I've watched a good chunk of the game. It's crazy in all the right ways, although it does make me wonder what Japan's fascination with Gnosticism is. 1: I love the Lunar games, of which there is only 3, 1, 2, and Magical School. There was never a 4th game. I wish the series would come back. In the style of 1 and 2, and it HAS to be localized like Working Designs in or it won't be the same, the backlash for the PSP port is proof of that.

I have bookshelves of games I plan to get too “someday.” lol I could never buy another game and still not get through them all. I want to play the Breath of Fire series though its pretty high up on my list of series to play. As games get further away from traditional RPG mechanics and systems I find Im valuing and enjoying the older stuff even more now.
Have to agree with you here, great list! And as a huge fan of Lunar, I recommend people check out the “Lunar: Silver Star Harmony” for PSP/VITA. Tons of quality of life improvements while still keeping that Lunar charm and a lot of Working Designs awesome humor! (Man, I miss Working Designs. Their localizations and incredible physical releases!)
To me, Breath of Fire 4 is the last BOF game... period. For the Xeno series, I wanna see a remake more than a sequel and actually finish the game this time. Square should have said they were mimicking Eva instead... The PS1 was overflowing with good RPGs
I'll say the same thing here I said on the other channel: great job on the updated video! It's like when one of my favorite games gets remastered and the remaster is such a joy to revisit. I'll check out any other updated videos you make! Also, my favorite non-FF PS1 RPG is probably either The Legend of Dragoon or Chrono Cross (though there are many, several even from this list, I have yet to play).
Do you have an opinion on Silver Star Harmony? I'm planning to replay the series at some point, but I kind of feel like I should stick with the PS1 version of the first game. This is mostly because I listened to the soundtrack for Harmony, and...it kind of felt...butchered.

Legend Of Legaia is hands down my favorite JRPG of all time. The music ALONE is worth the time it takes to play, the story is involved and often quite emotional, and the combat system is one of the best I've ever seen. Still crossing my fingers for David to do a playthrough!
I also loved Legend of Legaia. It's one of the rare games that actually gets better the further you get into the story. You can tell by the end of the game the developers really put their heart into it and wanted it to be something great for people to play.
I vastly prefer Lunar 2 over Lunar 1, and I'm always sad when Valkyrie Profile doesn't appear on any best of lists (be it best PSX games or best games of any system). Here's my top ten minus Final Fantasy games, with little thought given to sorting aside from the first two: Valkyrie Profile Xenogears Lunar 2 Chrono Cross Suikoden 2 Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (not really an RPG, but much better than most traditional RPGs and games on the system) Star Ocean 2 Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment (technically two games, but I'm considering them as one) Breath of Fire IV Tales of Eternia If Final Fantasy games were included, I would add Final Fantasy VII, IX, and Tactics, and subtract three of the games I listed after Symphony of the Night. There are a few major RPGs on the PS1 I haven't played, like Parasite Eve, although I did play of the games on David's list except for Legend of Legaia, which I should check out some time.
I loved Wild Arms 2 so much, played the crap out of that. Personally I would've placed Star Ocean 2 higher on the list, but that game's extra special to me.
theflyingninja1 the ps1 has one of the best catalogue of JRPGs of any system I’ve ever owned. Hell then throw in Crash, Spyro, resident evil, metal gear, and boy you’ve got your self great console
Lunar was my first JRPG that I ever played and completed. The story and mechanics gripped me as a child, and as a result it has special place in my heart to this day. Played the psp version to relive it and still loved it. I love someone else enjoyed this game as well and rates so highly as to put at #1! Kudos.
I just ordered a wild Arms 2 guide (for $45 UGH!) to start my let's play of it when I finish Xenosaga. So excited cause I haven't played it in 20 years! I like that you're updating some of these videos!
I was hoping Lunar would be #1. yesss this game is amazing. I played the original on the Sega CD system. As well as the second game. Great list. Love #1. I'm surprised Suikoden isn't on the list. I enjoyed it just as much as Suikoden2.
Love to see Lunar getting so much attention. If you like more of a challenge play the Lunar games from the Sega CD. I find the remasters on PS1 are to easy.
I played Grandia for the first time last year after watch the first version of your list, I really enjoyed it except for a very odd detail... I found the way the camera keeps moving constantly in battle distracting, it really killed my immersion at some points Keep up the good work David! I absolutely love hearing you talk so highly about the LUNAR games, and seeing Wild Arms 2 make the cut was great to see! LUNAR and Wild Arms both are in sore need of new entires, to be sure!
Wild Arms 2 translation is fantastic. I hit a point in the game where I couldn't understand at all whats going on because nothing makes sense in all the engrish. Strangely, the first game didn't have that problem.
I've finished all of these except Star Ocean which I didn't care for and Grandia which I loved, but my save-file on Saturn got erased. Suikoden 2 is the best of these. Just a masterpiece. Nice list.
For Xenogears, Square itself didn't run out of money. It was that the game was so far down Square's priority list that it didn't get much funding or staff to work on it. Square was more focused on the Final Fantasy series. And apparently, the higher-ups wanted the game to end with the destruction of Solaris. But the director didn't like that since it didn't complete the story. Hence the wall of text on the second disk. Although the way they've done it has a bit of charm to it. Still, my favorite game of all time.
I haven't played Grandia or L7nar and they look so up my alley, it's like christmas for me. 2 seemingly legendary games that flew under my radar as a kid. Cant wait to start them.
I wholeheartedly agree with Lunar being at the top. Nothin else has over 2 hours of animated cutscenes, a brilliant story, great voice acting, and a simple yet rewarding battle system. Its great game that's worth playing, whether you buy it or run it on an emulator 👌
Wild Arms 1 would be my #1. loved that game, never really got into the sequels. Xenogears is a tragic tale also, might have been the best game ever if they'd finished it.

Arc the Lad 2 To me those are the master pieces of the psx that stand the test of time, you can play them today and aside for graphics and minnor gameplay elements are excellent experiences, but sadly games like Xenogears for example to are almost unplayable today, I can stand the almost ridicule encounter rate but the jumping sections and horrible camera rotation are insane, that game really needs a remake or a book to enjoy the fantastic story.
Glad you mentioned Lunar 2 complete! It's seriously one of the best direct sequels I have ever seen. Not to mention when you get towards the end and see what I call, one of the saddest parts ever in any game. Something I never thought I would have ever seen.

I’m 31 years old, run a small business, have a wife and son and still make time to play through Suikoden 1 & 2 once a year.
Two of the best JRPGs of all time so it makes sense. I replay them often also and always look forward to preparing for and fighting Luca Blight.

Totally agree with Lunar Silver Star story. The amount of inspired NPC dialogue, and the soundtrack, just wow. That composer is a master.

Diaz is such a cool character. I was so happy when I was able to FINALLY recruit him during my second playthrough with Rena.

@@mikeclem1 The first time i stole the bunny shoes i was like "WTF is this" and out of curiosity i equipped them, only to never unequipped them again. Also probably the thing i love most about the game is each time you play there are so many different scenes you could see depending on who is in your party that even after the 10+ play throughs ive done so far i still sometimes stumble on a new private action i havent seen before.

We need Star Ocean: The Second Story remaster on new consoles or even PC, but even better would be a real sequel to it, no Star Ocean can stand close to it.

Oh man, this list is perfect. I honestly feel that both Lunar remakes on the PSX had the best writing of all RPGs in that era (including Vagrant Story).
Lunar is one of those games where I went out of my way to talk to EVERY NPC because of the quality writing.

I did not play all of the JRpGs on psx, but my personal favorites were all pretty early in the generation, Suikoden 1 and 2, Vandal Hearts, Wild Arms. Xenogears was good but the plot kind of fell apart by the end, I really like Chrono Cross except for all the filler characters. Never played Legend of Dragoon or Grandia but I think I would enjoy those.
Lunar is great but I played it on Sega CD first so i don't think of it as a PSX game.
Ahhh, Xenogears. It really says something about the game and story that it has stuck with people for so long even with the end turning out the way it did. Could you imagine what it would be like have the chance to sit down and play the "full" game the way they had originally intended? Man those were the days, truly the "golden age of RPGs" so to speak.

I've played and beaten suikoden 1 , but didnt get to suikoden 2. I was mad cuz I used a modded ps2 and wasnt able to transfer my data via memory card so I didnt even play it lol

9: This game, along with 3, are 2 of the finest JRPGs ever made. And holy shit does 4 have some cool party members. And the Art Style and Soundtrack are amazing.
8: Haven't played.
7: The game that game me into the genre. I watched my older cousin play it and HAD to have it. The music, the art style, the characters, THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE YOUR PARTY MEMBERS, the combat, everything about it I loved and still do. I hate that there are so few like it. And I wish Square Enix would go back to what made the series works, needs a Reboot probably due to the one twist.
6: Another game system that is friggin' awesome and I wish more devs would take inspiration, so many good ideas and most of them executed well.
5: This game is long as balls, but it is a very unique premise, building up your WORLD instead of a base is pretty unique as premises go.
4: This was a game I traded in, and unlike most examples, I re-bought it later on so I DO have a copy still. I still haven't gotten the Switch port, But I'm probably gonna fix that relatively soon, as this is also a friggin' gem.
3: Best game ever made period. I don't know why it's only number 3. ;)
2: Haven't played, but I've watched a good chunk of the game. It's crazy in all the right ways, although it does make me wonder what Japan's fascination with Gnosticism is.
1: I love the Lunar games, of which there is only 3, 1, 2, and Magical School. There was never a 4th game. I wish the series would come back. In the style of 1 and 2, and it HAS to be localized like Working Designs in or it won't be the same, the backlash for the PSP port is proof of that.
Agree so hard on number 3. If there's any game that deserves to top the PS1 JRPG list with no final fantasies, it's suikoden 2

I have bookshelves of games I plan to get too “someday.” lol I could never buy another game and still not get through them all. I want to play the Breath of Fire series though its pretty high up on my list of series to play. As games get further away from traditional RPG mechanics and systems I find Im valuing and enjoying the older stuff even more now.
Have to agree with you here, great list! And as a huge fan of Lunar, I recommend people check out the “Lunar: Silver Star Harmony” for PSP/VITA. Tons of quality of life improvements while still keeping that Lunar charm and a lot of Working Designs awesome humor! (Man, I miss Working Designs. Their localizations and incredible physical releases!)
Absolutely fantastic list and I can empathize with the Lunar comment. Never had a game pull my heartstrings the way Lunar did.
To me, Breath of Fire 4 is the last BOF game... period.
For the Xeno series, I wanna see a remake more than a sequel and actually finish the game this time. Square should have said they were mimicking Eva instead...

Do you have an opinion on Silver Star Harmony? I'm planning to replay the series at some point, but I kind of feel like I should stick with the PS1 version of the first game. This is mostly because I listened to the soundtrack for Harmony, and...it kind of felt...butchered.
There are a lot of versions of Lunar but I still believe that the PlayStation version is the best.

Legend Of Legaia is hands down my favorite JRPG of all time. The music ALONE is worth the time it takes to play, the story is involved and often quite emotional, and the combat system is one of the best I've ever seen.
Still crossing my fingers for David to do a playthrough!
I also loved Legend of Legaia. It's one of the rare games that actually gets better the further you get into the story. You can tell by the end of the game the developers really put their heart into it and wanted it to be something great for people to play.

I vastly prefer Lunar 2 over Lunar 1, and I'm always sad when Valkyrie Profile doesn't appear on any best of lists (be it best PSX games or best games of any system). Here's my top ten minus Final Fantasy games, with little thought given to sorting aside from the first two:

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (not really an RPG, but much better than most traditional RPGs and games on the system)

If Final Fantasy games were included, I would add Final Fantasy VII, IX, and Tactics, and subtract three of the games I listed after Symphony of the Night.
There are a few major RPGs on the PS1 I haven't played, like Parasite Eve, although I did play of the games on David's list except for Legend of Legaia, which I should check out some time.
I loved the era of RPGs that birthed the original Lunar on Sega CD, you should check out the Armor of Vay as well
I loved Wild Arms 2 so much, played the crap out of that. Personally I would've placed Star Ocean 2 higher on the list, but that game's extra special to me.

theflyingninja1 the ps1 has one of the best catalogue of JRPGs of any system I’ve ever owned. Hell then throw in Crash, Spyro, resident evil, metal gear, and boy you’ve got your self great console
Lunar was my first JRPG that I ever played and completed. The story and mechanics gripped me as a child, and as a result it has special place in my heart to this day. Played the psp version to relive it and still loved it. I love someone else enjoyed this game as well and rates so highly as to put at #1! Kudos.

I played Grandia for the first time last year after watch the first version of your list, I really enjoyed it except for a very odd detail... I found the way the camera keeps moving constantly in battle distracting, it really killed my immersion at some points

Wild Arms 2 translation is fantastic. I hit a point in the game where I couldn't understand at all whats going on because nothing makes sense in all the engrish. Strangely, the first game didn't have that problem.
You mean the times when the lizard start speaking in a dialect that was meant to be read in japanese, it was really weird.
I've finished all of these except Star Ocean which I didn't care for and Grandia which I loved, but my save-file on Saturn got erased. Suikoden 2 is the best of these. Just a masterpiece. Nice list.

Wild Arms 2 was the first rpg i completed. Loved that game.
For Xenogears, Square itself didn't run out of money. It was that the game was so far down Square's priority list that it didn't get much funding or staff to work on it. Square was more focused on the Final Fantasy series. And apparently, the higher-ups wanted the game to end with the destruction of Solaris. But the director didn't like that since it didn't complete the story. Hence the wall of text on the second disk. Although the way they've done it has a bit of charm to it. Still, my favorite game of all time.

I haven't played Grandia or L7nar and they look so up my alley, it's like christmas for me. 2 seemingly legendary games that flew under my radar as a kid. Cant wait to start them.
I wholeheartedly agree with Lunar being at the top. Nothin else has over 2 hours of animated cutscenes, a brilliant story, great voice acting, and a simple yet rewarding battle system. Its great game that's worth playing, whether you buy it or run it on an emulator 👌

Wild Arms 1 would be my #1. loved that game, never really got into the sequels. Xenogears is a tragic tale also, might have been the best game ever if they'd finished it.

To me those are the master pieces of the psx that stand the test of time, you can play them today and aside for graphics and minnor gameplay elements are excellent experiences, but sadly games like Xenogears for example to are almost unplayable today, I can stand the almost ridicule encounter rate but the jumping sections and horrible camera rotation are insane, that game really needs a remake or a book to enjoy the fantastic story.
