this song is so friggin' classic. One of the most underrated songs of the 80s
Cant get it out of my head 24/7 😮
What a classic song...Guitar work with Marty and Peter...Goosebumps!! Richards drumming..Insane!! Steve's bass riffing and vocals..Sublime!! What a band...My favourite ❤️💙🥰🙏
This song is a masterpiece. Starfish is a classic front to back. That album captured a aching melancholy, a haunting autumn dusk that still "rattles" my soul (see what i did there?) and transcends time. BTW, Ploog is not human in this video. The f$#$8ing fills he does after the breakdown? SIIICK!
There will never be an iteration of this classic band like this. The Church is the sum of these parts. No substitutes.
The two-guitar interplay is brilliant.
Peter Koppes's doing tremendous job here.
I love love love Peter. Melodies are incredible.
My god this is as awesome as the studio version! Love the speedier tempo. What a joy to watch the original lineup just killing it. Marty and Peter are just phenomenal, then and now, and Steve’s soothing voice always ties it all together. I am grateful to have seen them in 2004 when Marty and Peter were still with the band, but I just saw them a month ago with Ian, Ash and Jeffrey and I remain in thrall. They are also great musicians. Long live The Church!
My only complaint with this video is that there is not a single shot of Richard Ploog who if you listen is absolutely kicking ass on the drums. That guy had talent.
They never phone in any live version of any song in over 40 years. They kill it!!
That's exactly what I used to think watching their videos when I was a kid. Also thanks! Glad my Dad meant something to you and many other people!
@@irieploog579 Your dad, and all the members of this group, provided a gift in my life that has endured for more than 35 years. I never tire of listening to them.
@ Rock on!
Top band from Aussieland and a shame that in their own country not much recognition
as they should get!!!!!!!!!!
PB477 they are in the Aussie hall of fame.
a song about a reptile fuckin amazing aussie bands rock
I love them! I pimp them out all the time.
Richard was the most passionate and powerful of all their drummers, put the most heart, soul and feeling into it.
and a genuinely nice guy
I love Peter when he does his end solo - completely nonchalant as he rips up those fiery, face-melting notes!
I've seen this numerous times and now i say thank you for posting this.
These fellas are a few classes in front of me in academic terms and don't perform this song live anymore--good to see them do it here. The lead singer's daughters i see are doing well...
Thanks again from the American south,.....Georgia to be exact and please for the sake of millions dive a bit deeper before passing judgement on us.
SK as intense as ever, Ploogy absolutely explosive, Marty and Peter the very definition of a twin-guitar partnership. They were the greatest, and still are!
Registrato live al programma TV RAI " Doc " il 12 aprile 1988. Un applauso ai tecnici del suono italiani del programma, l'audio è semplicemente F A V O L O S O.
the drumming is ridiculously hard at that tempo
It made the whole song sound better than the album version in my opinion
Richard Ploog was the reason everyone started playing the song at a faster tempo
🤘🥁
I’m Richard Ploog’s son, thanks for your comment complimenting my dads drumming it means a lot.
@@irieploog579 dude your dad was a totally awesome fkin drum machine! I admire his job so much, cheers man
@@irieploog579 this album is all amazing, these melodies are wonderful and will last forever!!
Is this the song Dave Grohl said he found most difficult to play drums to? Might have even been the only song that threw him as far as playing drums goes.
This is on all four people!!!!! Bring back Ploog!!!
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ploog taking it fast fast fast. So cool. Beautiful guitars and Steven k...
2 lead guitar action just kicks ass!
Love this song. Steve Kilbey was in his prime then.
Yeah. But he needs to take some vocal lessons in this day and age
Amazing !!! 🙂
'Went to a concert of the Church in Paris, in the early 90's and never forgot. In his final solo, Peter makes me think of Ritchie Blackmore... in his style, his attitude.. and even his face ! 🙃
I like this live version even better than the album version.
The Sound quality is great...Nice how each live version carries itself a little differently in a unique way. Great performance.
Incredible uniquely, talented bands, after a while, often go under the radar, as the unworthy ones get all the recognition. The sucky way of the world - but The Church will never be foregotten...amazing song, arrangement, etc. - w/ all of their work!
Totally the Church but could hear U2 doing this one as well. Similar sonic atmosphere especially back then.
ohhh my God, what a live performance, perfection.
Never get sick of this song. Little quicker tempo here. Marty must have had some coffee right beforehand!
trasmissione live della tv RAI 2 Italia 1988..altri tempi..grandi The Church
This is the best version of this song...by far!
awesome love 🖤 these guys
Awesome bass line.
Masterful.
Just came across this (always loved the original) and I've now lost count of how many times I backed it up to watch and listen to the guitar solos at the end. Hypnotic!
Love this!...Especially at 4:00.....musical nirvana
The dueling guitars 💥💥💥💥
Great song! Great band!
Richard Ploog really went mad on this version. Really fine.
Three dislikes for this video can only indicate those three people don't know what is cultural art and what is beyond exemplary. This band is like no other, unique, technically intricate and fronted by the worlds all time best lyricist of our time. Steve Kilbey doesn't just write a handful of great songs he writes albums and albums of great stuff. Peter Koppes and Marty share very different personas but on stage do rip it up.
Flawless!
I just noticed....wow this is on Rai Due....basically Italy channel 2 (crazy Italy)........so impressed that the boys played all over the world. Nothing got in their way and for that I am at their feet.
Tyrrell James They're still a pretty amazing band. All extremely talented musicians.
There playing it So Fast i love it !!!
Marty and Peter killing it!
I saw these guys at a small club called The Coach House about the time of this video. I also saw Motorhead at the same club right around the time I saw the Church. Talk about seeing to great bands.
Aussie band, they've been around for nearly 30 years and they're still recording and touring
So good then and still sooo good!
great great band, unreal song
Wish we could download this version.
love love love!
@pob1989
Totally agree. With all due deference to subsequent Church drummers, this song and a couple of others like it just don't flow in the same way without him.
This is better than the studio version.
Magnifica y Fundamental Obra de Arte!!!! Un Clasico De Clasicos!!!
Marty is in the spotlight and he does play the signature riff in this song, but never, ever, ever sell Peter Koppes short.
Not for one second. If somebody does so, he or she must be deaf and blind. Peter Koppes seems to be more of a quiet guy (I don't know much about him, this is just my impression) but as we all know, still waters run deep and are full of surprises.
@@tanjawinter6492 Peter is definitely quiet and deep and humble. Great guy. A pleasure to talk to him. He enjoys talking about the higher potentials of humankind. Very kind and a gentleman for sure.
Pure rock n roll heaven!
se adelantaron a su época fueon vistos raros.. pero que temazo para escucharlo una y otra vez
Their best song on the Starfish album.
Nice vid ;)
Camera people should've taken shots of the drummer, this live version tops the original one💯🔥🔥🔥
in terms of energy, chops and technique, Ploogy was as close to Keith Moon as a drummer can get! My favourite band, rock on!
I’m Ploog’s son and it’s amazing that you can see that because that is one of my dad’s biggest drum influences. Thanks your comment!
Favorite Song:)
Classic!!!
Thanks!
🚬😎 classic
awesomeness
That fucking solo at the end tho. Damn
Yep, and that's why you are absolutely going to see these boys live the next time they play in L.A.! At least I hope so. hehe :-)
Rise hand who want to jump in and play with them this one!!!!
thanks for the ul
Sorry, that came out wrong - I was talking about his enthusiasm on the kit, rather than his attack; Keith always looked like he was having the time of his life, as Richard did!
Agreed, Richard's touch had a lot of delicacy in it, almost like Jazz drummers Buddy Rich etc
fast is good and when Marty is playing that is fine by me.!!!
amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fuck yeah.
totally agree
4:20-4:22
I use that lick so often now! :D
As much as I adore this, GEEZ it's fast.
My thoughts exactly, guitarist got off to a fast start, and everybody had to follow..
blame it on Ploogy! ha!
You can blame it on drugs but maybe they were nervous playing live? When I get nervous live I speed up
A great fast version of this beautiful song, absolutely adorable. But I hate the cameramen's work. There are four musicians on stage, not just two guitarists and a singer; there wasn't even one close up of the drummer, Richard Ploog. It feels like they ignored him which I find really disrespectful to him.
Maybe they believed that only the front musicians are important, but no. The drummer is the backbone of a band, and this should be appreciated.
These people had no idea what they were watching
Marty fucking WIllson Piper everyone!
absolutely -
hey, he has the same middle name as Johnny Fucking Marr!
es una buena bandita australiana
PETER KOPPES GUITAR WORK IS HEAVENLY TOTAL WHO NEEDS DRUGS.
Me! Iceream would be great!
wiki was wrong then. thanks for that :)
"Awful" sound quality, SteveMultiRed? You're obviously hearing something I'm not; or perhaps have a different type of speakers broadcasting this than me (mine are admittedly cheap!) This sounds great to my ears.
Que wena xtm
Nice solo
@karmineka
How come when rich left they never made another gold record or another hit? Ploog is the real deal.
Himno...
I wish The Church would play Reptile this way all the time live. I’ve seen many live performances and it sucked compared to this version.
The sound quality is fine. Marty's delay time is definitely a bit off though. But otherwise they sound fantastic!
@Nigelxman1 In many ways it is unfair to actually compare them at all, given that the only currency you can really use is their performances on the same songs. The different drummers have all left their mark on the albums they've played on and I've enjoyed their performances both there and live, but the sound/rhythm of the band has changed so much over time that there are too many other differences to really compare...
...on reinterpretations of old songs it is a bit different. I agree with your description of JD and also think that TP is actually getting better as he goes along, but in neither of these cases is my opinion due to the flashiness of the part or RP's image. As I said originally, Reptile in its original form flows beautifully from first to last. I like the version that they played on the most recent tour, but there is a lack of drive from the drums during it. TP decision or band? Idk.
Yep, same with Tantalized. Tim just doesn't seem to get that sizzle that Richard got on those songs - and in general. Tim's versions are slightly off kilter instead of a dead on 4/4 and detract from the song unfortunately
sped up for sure
I bet Marty is hating the fact that his echo timing is slightly off.
his use of drugs increased, leading to a withdrawal into his own head; this lead to problems with an increase in the amount of work needed to get an ever-decreasing amount of drumming on record. eventually this (drug-imposed) 'isolation led to his exclusion' (Wiki article), and he was no longer heard on the Starfish album, with his parts erased in favour of very well-metred drum-machine samples. what started as time out became a kick-out. sad. has his own myspace now.
esta banda de Australia es decente
THat solo MAN JEUSUS CHRIT !!!! i spell Christ wrong !
@simionTheOne
Which circumstances do you speak of?
Keep 🎸n
@GEETARS3 Because the general public has mostly crap taste in music. Best fucking band ever here. Go buy Priest +Aura on cd if you want to hear something truly sonically transcending and brilliant.
Tempo is way fast but very cool!
El primera guitarra estaba muy apurado...
Estaba que se c@gaba..????
Sorry, but I don't see the Keith Moon comparison at all. Not to take anything away from the brilliant and magical Keith Moon but Richard was a much more delicate and intricate drummer and he didn't hit the kit as hard as you seem to think he did.
Why is it so fast?
More fast than The Dukes of Hazzard.... And Speedy Gonzalez.
When they play this these days , the solo never sounds right IMO.
And that has nothing to do with MWP not being with the band.
