  • This is a video clip with some of the mid evening waltzing we did as a part of our 20th anniversary celebration dance party of the Boston Gender Free Contra Dances, taken Saturday evening, January 24th, 2009.
The sweet music for this waltz came from Dogtown, including Tom Randall on the GREAT grand piano, the delightful strings of Becky Miller on Fiddle, that FABULOUS sound of the accordion, played by Norb Spencer, and guest musician, a well known and respected fiddler from the Boston traditional dance community, Vince O'Donnel.
During breaks in the contra and square dance program, we typically will have a waltz or 2, as well as other couple dances.
We filmed this aloft from the balcony that overlooks the dance floor at the 1st Church of Jamaica Plain where we have our bi-monthly dances in Boston, MA.
Our dances continue to be well attended and continue to attract new folks and young folks new to this old tradition. Our dances are open to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, trans, queer folk and friends.
Back in 1989, we took this traditional New England dance form and added our own twist, teaching and dancing without reference to gender. It gave permission for anyone of any gender to dance with anyone else in the room. It was born out of a need to make this style of traditional dancing more welcoming and affirming to the gay and lesbian community. Over the years, this community has extended out to include Bisexuals, Transgendered, Queer, and many of our wonderful supportive straight dancing friends from the traditional dance community of greater Boston. This unique and amazing diversity of people is what makes gender free contra dancing so special at our dances.
New folks will always find a warm welcome, as well as a safe and affirming community at our dances. Come and join us and bring a friend!
No partner or prior experience is necessary, and all dances are taught. It's a great form of aerobic exercise and it encourages group participation which makes this a unique social event. It's a great place to meet new people and make new friends! Come and join us!
