It appears that you have completely missed the point here. I also don’t think you’re very educated on this issue. The point is that the department of Marine fisheries has consistently mismanaged not only flounder but the entire fishery. I also seem to give priority to commercial fishing over recreational fishing. Your point about commercial fishing also being part of public use May be accurate but completely ignores that recreational fishing represents many times the numbers of individuals, i.e., the public that commercial fishing does. When determining public policy, we never have a situation where everyone in the public agrees on the direction to proceed. Therefore, the decision needs to be about what best meets the overall goals and the needs of the most people. The marine fisheries vision seems to have a history of failure. They have not successfully managed any species within North Carolina waters. Striped bass now only exist because of an intense stocking campaign. Flounder has been in serious declined for many years and now spotted sea trout appeared to be going in the same negative direction. North Carolina is the only state on the East Coast of America that allows trawling within the barrier islands. The argument is that the bycatch from this activity has a strong negative impact on the fishery.

I thought this was a good article until you started talking out of both sides of your mouth. At one point you show the statute that says the resources are for the general public which you defined as commercial and recreational. Later when you were talking about what is "fair" you said the commercial folks are fishing for the general public and recreational are simply fishing for themselves. You blew right by that with no explanation. Nice try. Commercial fish for their own personal profit, not for the good of the general public. I know you put this together quickly, but next time explain yourself better.

My one point of contetion with your video is, the commercial fisherman does not fish for the good of the public. They fish because of their heritage, tradition, and MONEY !!!! Take the money away and they stop the nets. That in turn stops the political hush money to DMF. I'll bet the stocks would rebound. As a recreational fisherman I just want a level field. If you count my discards, which there is no accurate way, then count the commercial discards. All you have to do is ride with a pound net or trawl and you will see. I also support the concept ( or theory ) of reporting your catch like deer. Then you will see the recreational landins are not as high as you think.

I went fishing this morning and caught 5 flounder over 16 inches. and 3 more between 13 to 15 inches. there are plenty of flounder out there. Have you ever worked on a shrimp boat. every 2-to-3-hour trawl kills more flounder and trout and several other types of fish than a dozen recreational fisherman will harvest in a couple years. N.C. could be a worldwide fishing Meca if all trawling, dredging and gill netting were stopped.

Amazing level of arrogance. 100% Comercial fishing shill. In your world, a commercial business is more "public" than the individual. I lose my rights if/when an activity is commercialized for the "public" good? Insane take on rights.

Scary uninformed this guy is about what is really going on out there and how much commercial guys kill in juvenile fish. But they don't count against their quota?
    Do more research.

Agree. Fire them as there seems to be an agenda that everyone does not agree with. The science is not factual. The numbers don't make sense when it relates to recreational fishermen.

God gave man the authority to manage all the animals on earth and fish in the waters. Government seeks to take the place of God. God will not be mocked. 🙏

Boy this took a left turn...easy to steer away from the real issue and get into a moral, legal, and rights discussion. We all see what's going on here. Watch this guys bank account. It's like everything else in this world...follow the money.

What gets me is what is allowed with commercial boats, when you see a netter culling catch with hundreds of dead striper floating behind the boat, that's BS! Surly it happens with many other species.

Over 80 percent of NC caught seafood is shipped out of state after being sold. How is public trust resource being upheld Bill? Its a money racquet plain and simple.

Though I am onboard with the sentiment I am not going to sign. One reason.....
The inaccurate take that this is a "liberal" issue. This isn't an R or D thing. The Rs control state government.
This is built in, legal, corruption. The entire system needs to be razed and rebuilt .

I think the issue is commercial nets taking all fish. The problem with them is that they do not cull the infant fish resulting in the depletion of continuous restocking of the species. Not just flounder but others as well

Interesting that the writer of this petition mentioned American Red Snapper. Those restrictions are federal .

Commercial fishermen do not fish for the public. They fish for a paycheck like any job. They bring more tax revenue into the state hence they have more rights than we as individuals. 🤔

The recreational fisherman are not the problem. If there is a population shortage then there needs to be higher regulations imposed on commercial fisherman. Its all about money and not about conservation thats why recreational fisherman are sick of being regulated to death when these commercial boats are still scoopin up all the damn fish and Im not aloud to keep 1 flounder a day. Also North Carolina is the only state that still allows inshore net trawling.Or how about these big plants such as dupont/chemours dumping chemicals/Genx into the capefear river contaminating our waters with forever chemicals.I guess you can see why I dont have a bunch of faith in government regulation when big money is involved they turn a blind eye and allow the destruction of our natural resources.
