@00:30 Ellie's mom looks like Ellie because this is the actress who played Ellie in the video game. Nice tribute to her to have her play her mom here. Joel was ruthless. It was shocking. But, when it comes to Ellie, I love the fact that Joel is ruthless.

Yep, I think it was very touching that the Actress who literally brought the original Ellie character to life, does so again in a different meaning. A great choice for the role, much easier to act as a mother to the character when she figuratively is already.

Marlene didn’t give Ellie a choice though if she wanted to go through with the surgery or forget about it. Also nobody even Marlene knew if the plan would work 100% so why would Joel just let them kill her over something that wasn’t 100% sure? I think Joel made the right choice

@@vincefavaro1267 Because even tho they don't have 100% sure if it would work they would have to try it with the only person they know is imune, one loss to possibly save many, it's a risk worth taking in their perspective even tho it's a hard decision, ofc in Joel's perspective the choice is obvious, he won't lose another child again and live with all that pain so he brings back the old him, kills everyone to save the only thing that he loves and is keeping him alive, Ellie. Then he lies to her because he knows he did a selfish decision for love and if he told her the truth she would probably want to have importance and meaning to all those peoples lives that could have been saved, the only way of getting out of there with her, was lying to her and hiding the truth from her.

@@vincefavaro1267 That's why I said both Marlene and Joel both took the choice away from Ellie. Marlene forced Ellie into the procedure without asking because she was unwilling to risk Ellie saying no, and Joel lied about slaughtering the Fireflies because he was unwilling to accept yes for an answer if he'd asked her.. and he knows she would have said yes. Marlene wanted to save the world, Joel wanted to save Ellie. In the end they both betrayed Ellie trying to achieve their goals.

Let's just say they made Joel's choice a lot more ambiguous and morally gray than in the game. In the game, the Fireflies knocked him out when he was pumping out Ellie who had drowned in the water, they were not going to return his backpack to him (he found it himself) and even more so to pay him for delivering Ellie with weapons, it was not explained exactly how the vaccine would work and why they could not conduct experiments on Ellie's blood. In the series, Ellie is treated much more carefully, Joel was going to return his things and be paid, how the vaccine works, explained quite realistically. At the same time, Joel kills people who have already surrendered, and not just armed ones (although he spared the nurses).
However, in both cases, Ellie was not allowed to make a choice and give consent or refusal. Despite the fact that she is a minor and has not reached the age of consent ... And most importantly, even if the vaccine is administered to all people (which is impossible), it still will not save the world. Millions of infected people who tear and devour people, thousands of cannibals and robbers will not go anywhere, and there will simply not be enough hands and heads to restore the energy grid, the economy and the social system. So summing up, I'm still on the side of Joel.

ND: The original ending that for a long time we discussed is Ellie would believe the lie and you’d see them walking off to Tommy’s town and the camera would track up and you’d feel like, they’re going to be ok. It was about a week before we shot that scene and we thought, this isn’t honest, this doesn’t feel right, Ellie would know, I don’t buy it, we have to change this.
This is an Ashley thing but no matter what the acting direction is, she’s going to nod her head and be like, ‘OK… OK’. And throughout shooting, a lot of her improvisation for Ellie involved saying, ‘ok’. And I thought, you have to end on that. Whatever it is Joel tells her, she has to just be like, ‘ok’.
So Ashley, when you’d say that to Neil, you weren’t being glib, it really was a matter of trusting his direction. Is that the same feeling you wanted Ellie to communicate to Joel?
AJ: That’s how I was playing it. Obviously she has a bullshit detector, she clearly knows he’s lying, but she says, alright, let’s see where this goes.
ND: And it’s also like, how do you approach that? Would she start asking very detailed questions? Why would they release me before I woke up? Why wouldn’t I talk to someone before leaving? Was Marlene there? No, she would just ask the one obvious question: are you lying?

”Why does he lie to her?”
Because he knows that she would have wanted this and would hate him if she knew the truth of what he did!
Marlene was literally right, they both know what Ellie would have wanted. This isn’t about letting her choose, this is about whether Joel can live without her and the answer is no. At the cost of the human race he will make sure he doesn’t lose her.

    • @zimvader25

If Marlene “knew” what Ellie would have wanted she would’ve been honest and allowed her to say her goodbye to Joel. But she didn’t know. So she lied. And Ellie is 14 anyway. Who honestly believes a 14yr old is mature enough to make the right decision ?

    • @The_Story_Of_Us
      @The_Story_Of_Us Рік тому +1

@@zimvader25 The fact that you think Joel is mature enough to make that choice for her tells me enough about your perspective. As for your other disingenuous shit, Marlene explicitly told Joel that they put her under without telling her because she wouldn't be in pain or be afraid, and sure enough, when she wakes up, she has no idea what happened.
If the Fireflies aim to maximize well being for mankind, then that applies similarly to Ellie's well being and the fact is, if she has to die, then putting her through the needless knowledge of her impending death will do nothing for her last moments alive.
And funny you should make claims about not knowing, since Marlene clearly did know, because she was exactly right about what Ellie wanted and could easily tell in that very scene that Joel knew that's what she would have wanted by his reaction to her telling him it's what she would want.
So you accusing Marlene of not knowing when even Joel knows exactly what she would have wanted (hence the lies) is like the mental gymnastics equivalent of watching a nerd with goose neck trying to do yoga. You try to tie yourself into knots defending falsehoods, yet you fail miserably to even come across like you're right.

I had the same reaction as you guys when I played the game 10 years ago. The Fireflies was about to kill the only person they knew were immune to the virus. How did the doctor know this was the only solution? Joel and Ellie was not even in the hospital for more than a few hours. They would barely have time to run tests on her. It takes months for doctors today diagnose a tumor with todays technology. And what kind of doctor kills their patients without their consent? He even pulls a scalpel on Joel, he so desperate to start cutting up Ellie. He could've just stepped out of the way and defused the situation. He reminds me more a certain type of 'doctor' that ran experiments on humans a few decades ago. The Fireflies didn't see Ellie as anything other than a test subject, and they were about to make huge mistake.
And they came between Mama Bear and his cub.

"The Fireflies was about to kill the only person they knew were immune to the virus. How did the doctor know this was the only solution?" And that is exactly what makes the Fireflies' approach utterly moronic. When you finally find an immune person you fucking properly study them before jumping into conclusions you can't back away from. Killing off this person who could have so many answers is just idiotic. Not to mention how they didn't ask Ellie anything and didn't even let Joel see her and talk with her so, gotta say, I'd probably have reacted exactly the same way as Joel in this situation. It would set all alarm bells off in my head.

  • @TrentRidley
    @TrentRidley Рік тому +3

Whilst I knew a few tidbits from the first game, such as Sarah's death occurring on the night of the outbreak and that the story centred around Joel guiding Ellie across country and forming a father-daughter type bond along the way, I haven't actually played the games, so this series has been quite the journey.
Ellie's birth scene was amazing... and tragic... and scary... and beautiful... and really interesting as the likely source of her immunity. What a devastating thing for Marlene though. They certainly were very different people, but like Joel, Marlene was someone hardened by this world. They also both made the same mistake at the end, taking the decision away from Ellie.
I love that they then opened up with Ellie's trauma and the change in her personality, hard as it was to see. It is realistic, though, the experiences she has had over the previous months would undoubtedly damage a person. Especially a teenager, their hormone riddled bodies and brains being generally ill equipped to deal with their emotions as it is, haha.
Some of the conversations in this episode were so well crafted. The one where Joel tells Ellie they can still turn around, go live a quiet life back at Tommie's, and she responds that they have to go all the way with their mission perfectly foreshadows Joel's conflict later in the episode. He knows Ellie would probably choose to die for a shot at saving humanity, but he just can't stand to lose her.
I also loved the conversation where Joel discusses trying to kill himself. It was the most honest and vulnerable Joel has been with her throughout. I think he realised she needed that from him, but it was also something he wanted to give to her to show her just how much she meant to him. He was expressing to her that as dark and painful as it may get at times, you will find the light and the beauty again. You will find yourself again. That of course culminated in the moment where he indicates to Ellie that it was she that had healed him from the wound that was the loss of Sarah, she who had led him back to the light, the beauty, and himself again - such a touching moment. Seeing Joel come from being this person who was extremely closed-off and bitter to this moment of trust and hope was such a great representation of that healing and how far their relationship had come.
The sound design on the hospital rescue scene (where Joel rescues Ellie from surgery) was amazing. The music was dominant, with the sounds of gunshots, shells pinging on the floor, the occasional agonised scream heard underneath it. That, and the music itself, created a great deal of tension and left a sombre sense in the air. This was no moment of triumph or joy and I think we got that same sombre sense from Joel in the car afterwards. Sure he saved Ellie, but he again had to kill to do it and he understands that he may have just resigned humanity to extinction. You can see in that moment that he's hugely conflicted and he knows that he acted somewhat selfishly. He also knows that Marlene was probably right in that Ellie would have given her life for a cure. Afterall, that's why he lies to her, right? But he still couldn't bring himself to let her go. Whilst we can all make the argument for why Joel should have acted for the greater good, I think we can all also understand why he didn't, so it's super hard to be highly critical of him. I think it's this that makes this ending such a compelling one.
Joel and Ellie's final conversation was again brilliantly crafted. In opening up about Riley I think Ellie was essentially saying to Joel, "Hey, this is my deepest, most painful secret and I'm about to be totally honest with you about it, so I expect you to be the same when I ask you about what happened back at the hospital." She obviously has her doubts about Joel's story, but I think she so desperately wants it to be true, so desperately doesn't want to have been betrayed by the one person she trusts and loves in this world, that she's willing herself to accept it. Deep down, however, I think there's a part of her that knows he's lying. Please, no spoilers, but I can't help thinking that Joel's lie is going to come back to bite him in the second game/season. Through all this trauma and adversity they've slowly built a loving relationship on a foundation of openness and trust. This fact was really highlighted by the conversations they shared throughout this episode, so I suspect that trust will be broken when Ellie learns the truth about what happened at the hospital and that she still might hold the potential for a cure. Though it pains me to say, I think this will likely be a major source of conflict between the two next season.
Anyway, this first season has been great. The writing, the music, the casting, the directing, the cinematography, the acting, etc, etc, etc has all been top notch. Special mention of course for Bella and Pedro, they've carried this story brilliantly.
Thanks for your reactions, let's do it all again come season two.

I think that the execution of the story could've been better no doubt, but I like the general concept of the story. Thinking that these kind of actions don't bear consequences is incredibly naive. Especially since they are trying to make the characters believable. If I had the opportunity and the skill required I would've done the same thing in her situation.

Ikr. At first I didn't recognize her because I've only seen her as a blonde, but her voice when she grunts and screams was a dead giveaway even before she said a word. I love that they found a way to tie her to Ellie while giving an explanation to Ellie's immunity at the same time. I wish they would have gave Troy something better than a badguy to play last episode, but I guess it was kind of cool to have new Ellie kill OG Joel. I'm dying to see who they find for season 2 that looks like Abby, because her physique is really difficult for women to obtain and it's an important part of her character. They'll pretty much need a female body builder that can act.

I am sure many will disagree but the way I see it, Joel HAD to lie to Ellie. He felt he had to protect Ellie because if he would have told her the truth then one of 2 things were bound to happen. Either she accepted the lie and forgave Joel making her live with the guilt of withholding the cure to mankind in exchange for her life, or just the opposite, not forgiving Joel for what he did, breaking off their father, daughter relationship, and possibly losing another daughter as Ellie would try to return to Salt Lake City and sacrifice her life for the mere chance that the cure might be successful. Joel couldn't allow that to happen. In his mind he was protecting her from taking that chance. From again losing the one person that meant so much to him. Yes, Joel ultimately sacrificed himself for the sinns he committed, but at least he and Ellie got a chance to live those 4 to 5 years together in relative piece and enjoy a little happiness together. As a father that has lost my first child... I would have done the same!

I’m glad you understood that they really don’t know what they’re doing. Any decent scientist would at least start with just taking a biopsy sample. People can have brain biopsies taken without being harmed, so if they just want to reproduce the fungus they should be able to do that. M. They should only do anything fatal as a last resort (and with Ellie’s informed consent).
(Also, while in the fiction they may be trying to say she really did get the fungus at birth from that bite, that makes no sense. Maybe if the umbilical cord itself had been bitten, but the bite her Mom got was only minutes or less from the time she was born and separated, and blood does not flow from the mother to the child through the umbilical cord. The bloodstreams are kept separate (naturally) to prevent cross immune reaction and to prevent cross infection. So there’s no way the fungus could’ve traveled to the baby in that short time through the cord.)

Talk about a morally ambiguous ending.
On one hand, I get it. Humanity took away what mattered most to Joel and after finding something that close in Ellie again, he wasn't going to let it happen again. I don't know what it's like to be a a father but I would like that someday and having to put myself in Joel's shoes, I'd probably do the same? Not to mention, the Fireflies weren’t giving her much of a choice in the matter.
But then again, neither was Joel. It was still a…..selflessly selfish choice that not only doomed the entire world but robbed Ellie of whatever hope she had left for it as well as the choice to choose. It might be refreshing to some people, seeing them finally be together in this "new beginning" but keep this in mind: it's based on a lie.
    ALL OF IT.

Why would you assume doctors, surgeons and the leader of the fireflies don't know what they're doing? I'm not saying it would be a 100% guaranteed cure but it would certainly be the most likely to be successful option in the world, and they would have done a tone of research. What Joel did was wrong, selfish and fucked up, plain and simple. Yes, we understand why he did what he did, but it doesn't change his actions of directly murdering many innocent people. Not to mention the cost of potentially indirectly killing billions.

Then, you have a perfectly healthy innocent patient in the waiting room. If you kill him and harvest his organs you save five lives, but you have to murder him. What do you do? Either way you’re gonna have to live with the guilt. That’s the ethical dilemma that this episode deals with.
