I've recently purchased this model (QHD 3070 version). Can confirm it's a solid piece of kit and I've had no issues with it in the week since owning it. Can recommend its purchase. It's certainly not the the cheapest but I paid the premium as I had a long standing desire for an Alienware (since childhood). Battery isn't great, but improved significantly on turning the screen refresh down to 60Hzs.
Congrats on your new machine! I just did the same (mine is FHD 360 Hz) I also wanted an Alienware since I was younger, now I can finally afford it even if it's more expensive than other brands with same hardware.

With the AWCC startup time issue, it's possible to more or less 'remove' it by changing the AWCC service startup mode to 'automatic', as by default it's set to 'automatic - delayed'. This can be done in the 'services' app in Windows. This way the service required for AWCC and it's other components (minus sound profiles, from my testing) starts immediately and the features are all ready to use whenever you see fit. It might be worth mentioning this in a future AW-related video or something as it's a pretty major QoL improvement that the user can make fairly easily. Aside from that, great video!
I know this is old. but my friend's son owns one of these laptops. We( He) Upgraded the Ram to 16 or 32 GB Not sure which. But he says it takes like 10 minutes for the laptop to boot lol. I'm not sure whether the drive is going or something else is going on. I looked at his start up programs and he doesn't have much there so not sure what is causing the slow start up. Would this modification help or no?
@@lfhlaw this slow startup after changing the memory is because the motherboard is going through a process known as ‘training’. 360 hertz monitors in general is a total ripoff unless you have an RTX 3090, let alone 360 Hz display on a laptop. Its just a waste of money. 240 Hz is the best for a 1080p panel in my opinion and for a 2K panel, 165 Hz is the sweet spot.
Nope, should be unless u are competitive gamer. For daily gamer, 120hz is the base minimum. 240hz is already overkill .... as someone who own both 360hz vs 240hz i could claim that, these monitor was for that minor user like me, myself who enjoy extreme low latency in csgo, valorant, who can addapt to that high refresh rate. That’s why it’s expensive. It was not means for casual. It’s was not for u so you will feel skechy. Even i have rtx 3090 xtreme, i couldn’t push to limit those games other than csgo valorant blacksquad
Sometimes it is not about the refresh rate that the buyers want. For laptops, sometimes only the higher refresh rate option gives you a higher color gamut which is the deciding factor.
I've had 3 gaming laptops over the last 6 years: one Dell with i5 6300hq (had a decent battery life) one overpowered with i7 8750h (had less than 1 hour battery life) and now a lenovo legion 5 with r7 5800h that gives me more than 6 hours of battery life when doing web browsing and docs, it's just amazing

That is as bad as the people on reddit refuseing to buy AMD Ryzen CPU's today even though they are way better than anything intel currently has all because they werent good years ago
Having previously owned an Alienware Area 51 desktop and AW18 laptop, I would never purchase a DELL product again. I never experienced soo many problems and BSOD's in all my life! For a laptop, I now own an MSI G75 for the last year and for half the price and haven't looked back (not one crash). For desktop I just build my own with the components I want.
That's interesting, I've owned Alienware laptops since 2012 and except for one incident where the motherboard died (they replaced and I still have that unit to this day) they have been workhorses for me. I'm not the biggest fan of their support apparatus, but it does exist and it has always "worked". Obviously, everyone has a different experience and its a great thing there are quite a few options in this market.
I wanted a laptop but seems theyre all either too expensive, loud/heavy or bad screens bad specs *sigh* I guess I should just build a desktop ...I dont find good prebuilts in Canada but even there it's very expensive, with the screen it's the a little more expensive than recent gaming laptops. Also I've never done it before so it makes me nervous.. I dont want to fk up.
I have the same laptop The reason why the laptop does not turn on when you press the button from the first time is because it is already booting up when you open the lid. You are actually switching it off. If you want to turn this off you can use the bios
how do i do that??..I have an inspiron 7577 and it also has this behaviour. Sometimes when u open the lid from sleep, the laptop seems like its off..so when i press the power button the keyboard light turns on and then it go off. Then the laptop starts again as if it has restarted. This happen intermittently
Hey Jarrod I think I found the cause for the slow AWCC at startup! It's set under services to be startup delayed which means it waits 2mins for it to startup to avoid starting with other apps and services at startup.
To sort out the problem with the power button. You have to remove the the battery and press the power button for 60sec to full discharge the internal components and circuits. I had similar situation back in 2012 with my M17x R4 and that's the good thing about removable batteries.
For this specific model there lso turned out to be an issue with enabling sleep when a hardware update is queued. Disabling the sleep function and using hibernate instead prevents the self brick
One thing that amazes me is how we still have such crappy cameras in expensive machines when a 108mp one can be had for 20$. edit: regarding the second nvme mounting screw - yes, you need to order it. I forgot how expensive it is, but if you don't get it when you buy the laptop, the shipping cost is pretty nuts too.. This nickel and diming turned me off any Dell products.
Agreed Ioan. This is one area where Macbooks and Microsoft Surface laptops are better. I picked up the Razer Blade 14 recently and it has a 1 megapixel 720 webcam. It's awful. It's not like better sensors are much more expensive, so it's strange that such expensive laptops still use terrible webcams (terrible speakers are common in gaming laptops too).
Got the one with highest priced specs in the video for $2400 this Black Friday. None of the problems mentioned concern me. Only thing a little concerning is battery. But I never game on battery anyway. So not a problem.
I got this laptop 2 months ago 😊 the 3080/11800h variant. I put liquid metal on it and replaced stock pads and added extra 1mm flat heatpipes, flashed gpu to the r4s 140w vbios, upgraded ram to 64gb cl20 r2 ram, added another 2tb nvme, and added custom heatsinks to ram and nvmes along with using the backplate as a heatsink, removed the plastic and flap from over the vents and sealed the gaps between fans and heatsink fins, removed that top intake filter too so you can see the heatpipes 😊 system never passes 80c on full system load, (140wgpu/60w cpu) and runs passive on day to day tasks and the laptop is like %25 faster then stock
I agree. Modern Alienware laptops look really good, but they are all show and no go. Or at least, not as much go as you should be getting for the money, especially with the buggy software.
Agree. If you like the looks of Alienware laptop, you can always go with an Eluktronics Prometheus too. It is cheaper than Alienware and perform better.
What do you mean it shouldn't make a difference? You are saying keeping Optimus enabled and let automatically the Nvidia software switch to the dGPU on the fly? Yeah, it might be happening I guess. Should be interesting to know. Unless the Nvidsia Control Panel switch is required to phisically disable the iGPU pass thru and until then it's all Optimus garbage.. I'd like to know as well.
@@TheMacco26 Because Advanced Optimus is different from Optimus, I guess? As I read from articles, Advanced Optimus will automatically switch between two graphic cards depending on the running applications, so in theory there should be no different in performance (or at least not too much), but far more better in batery life. But I am also interested in knowing if it is true or not. Finally, with Advanced Optimus, at least we don't need to reboot anymore (assuming the performances are some what similar).
As an alienware owner for several years I lately got very disappointed and discouraged to buy alienware devices due to the significant diminished build quality and feature set that used to make a true alienware. So I have one question Jarrod: how would you rate the new alienware laptops from the last 5 years or so because that's when this downfall trend started... compared to laptops from 2017 and older because my alienwares are older but seems way more premium built and with more useful features than these plastic laptops alienware is making lately in the name of thin and light. They are just more disposable than they are serviceable or repairable which is tha main pillar that built alienware's reputation and the only justification for higher prices. These days there are more alienware laptops that you get confused of which one to buy due to dell intentionally removing g features just to segment them into more expensive same product with a different model name....Plus the sketchier than ever dell website with so many hidden options, upsets, vague claims.... Alienware is becoming like these other small boutique laptops with so many models that some of them even get discontinued without being noticed. Honestly then there is no reason to buy them anymore because you can just get a similar if not better specs and build quality with more features from another brand like lenovo, msi, acer,.... and that's sad because it used to be a niche to own an alienware but now they don't even last more than a few years. Anyways maybe you could make a video about alternatives that have risen in the fall of alienware like these clevos.... and do a comparison.... that would be great 👍. Thanks
Actually the M series is sh!t this year. The X17 is a true Alienware. X15 has too many problems so won't recommend it. Buy X17 it is the second best after MSI. Infact X17 has better aesthetics, build quality, etc etc. So, just like every year Alienware (X17) is still the top dog for those who willing to spend 300$ more than the competition.
@@manojpatra2840 actually the x series aren't that good either when you really thing about what an alienware used to be imagine where you have to get a completely different version of the same machine just to get all the features it offers, while before all you had to do was but the base model and upgrade it as you see fit or can afford to. In fact alienware models are now tiered in a way that compiles you to buy the more expensive model wich has little to no io ports and under the hood it is just the same recent BGA crap meaning you have to replace it every two to 3 years when new hardware comes out. Don't believe me? Try and look at the old aliwnware devices till 2015-16 right before the release of the gtx 10 series, if you owned one from that time inam sure you can't stand the new shut too maybe the area 51m seems tempting but compare it to the 18 r3 or the old m15x, 17x, 18x and you will see that the difference is night and day. Dell doesn't want you to keep your pc longer because they want to sell you something every year, you can do the math and all of that = corporate greed which doesn't benefit the consumer in any way

For me I was having the same power button issue until I realized that opening the lid turns on the system (slowly). So if I open the lid and hit the power button, the system thinks I'm trying to turn it off. Either use the lid only to turn on the system or disable that feature in BIOS to get the power button to work normally.
I picked up a r5 ryzen 5800h with a 3070 (240 hrtz panel) 1tb. I got it for $1700 Cdn as a refurbished model from best buy. I saved $1k. I can't believe it cost that much new. 5 days in and I love it so far. I have an acer 27 XV272U coming in, curious to how it will run on that. You have to limit the cpu to 90 degrees in bios, otherwise it runs too hot. Performance change is minimal, especially when you turn off advance optimus for gaming. Changing refresh to 60hrtz, and screen brightness to 30/40-ish gets me near 7 hours of battery for UA-cam-like viewing. I've only played Cyberpunk on it so far. I didn't do any heavy frame testing, but it looks incredible on the panel with rt. I found the fans a bit loud though
I just shipped my R6 back Monday, Dell emailed me today said they are refunding me soon. Too many problems, it got to hot, too loud, games started to stutter, Star Citizen performance was atrocious.
Hola! hace poco hice la compra de una R6, espero que no tenga estos problemas. ¿En cuanto tiempo empezó a presentarte esos inconvenientes? Gracias Saludos!
The power-on problem you’re encountering reminds me of the problem I’ve had with my wife’s Dell Inspiron. This along with other Dell laptop problems I’ve had, on every single Dell I’ve had, lead me away from Dell in the end.
I never fully nailed it down, but it might be related to the power on when you open the lid and forget it does that and press the button, really not sure it was kind of random. I literally stood there for 20 min trying to make it happen on camera but couldn't lol, but it happened pretty much daily during testing.
@@JarrodsTech for me it was intermittent and i could never reproduce it. thus pretty much guaranteeing it'll never be fixed. i'm now on a Lenovo laptop... fingers crossed :)
Wow...something is seriously different between your m15 R6 and the one I got in just last week. I found that the secondary SSD slot had a full copper heatsink and all the trimmings straight out of the box (but oddly shipped with a 2230 spec SSD for the primary, something I'm working out with their customer service team since it's terribly slow), I couldn't replicate that keyboard flex whatsoever, and the AWCC software takes zero time at all to load up. My biggest complaint is the lack of effects for the per-key RGB keyboard (which just comes down to lazy software holding it back) and the fact that I got screwed on my primary SSD. I'd be curious to chat if you're up to it to see why things appear so drastically different on each of our machines despite them being the same make and model (and some different specs)
Mine came with 2280 size heatsink, bracket and screwes installed for secondary drive, tho boot drive is the same as yours 2230, extremely slow Kioxia BG4 Series KBG40ZNS512G. No keyboard flex, AWCC loads with system, zero waiting time and both port (HDMI & USB-C) support external monitors for dual monitor setup. Btw, how's your battle with support about 2230 boot drive? Since 2230 is limited to 512GB on this mobo, there is no way to upgrade and use installed hardware (need to move bracket AND new full size heatsink)
I just got one of these with a 3070 and the 1440p screen. It's now almost $3000 CAD, but I got mine on sale for $2000 CAD. Completely changes the value! That is the smaller power brick you have, and the Cherry keyboard is $100 CAD, so that helps too. It also came with the second NVMe SSD hardware. My biggest complaint is the fans winding up to near full while just sitting at the desktop randomly. The fan profiles do little (if anything). Lastly, it looks like there has been a BIOS update, maybe.

It runs the first game I loaded very well but the build quality doesn't feel as sturdy as my old m15 R3. My biggest complaints are with the fans and low microphone. The fans seem to run at full blast intermittently while surfing or even when only idling. Is this normal? My gaming headset (3.5mm jack) works fine on two other computers in the house but is giving me very low volume in my game. My m15 r2 feels like a demo test or something. The fans absorb way too much dust and they don't have an easy way to clean it? Why can't they have removable fans and filters you can remove and clean anytime you want? No, they make it hard so that you buy a new one asap.
Hey Jarrod! I was wondering which you would recommend between the Legion 7 and the MSI GE76 for 3D modeling and animation. And if it were to be the Legion 7, should I get the model with Ryzen 9 5900HX, or the model with the i9-11980HK? Thanks!
You shouldn't even get neither of the CPU. To me, there are only 2 choices, either the R7 5800H or the i7-11800H . You pay a lot more for top spec/SKU CPU but you won't notice the performance difference at all. I think the Legion 5 Pro is more worth the money than Legion 7, MSI GE76 is a great laptop too. If I were you, I would go for i7-11800H but only for 2 reasons. It supports PCIe 4.0 SSD and come with Thunderbolt which the Ryzen does not. I would only consider going Ryzen if battery life is a concern. Remember the money you saved from not buying the top spec CPU ? You dump it on a faster SSD drive, I think it is more worth.
@@JarrodsTech It's sad to see that it isn't Lenovo's fault. I installed it by choice on my legion 5 to control my external keyboard and it immediately tanked my battery life. It promptly got removed.

Hey Jarrod, for the same price, legion pro 5600h 3060 or alien 11400h 3060? Ive been following your videos for a long time and bought legion last year thanks to your reviews, now time to upgrade a bit.
I wouldn't purchase any "refreshed" products during the pandemic. The shortages cause product engineers to compromise too much. You can't get enough of X so you go with Y. Then you have to look at price bands. If you go with the better components odds are its the more expensive option. So then you start pushing the prices too high. Same thing applies to manhours spent developing the software. If you have 5 people working on something you've got to pay for their time somewhere. And laptops sold through Retail have notoriously low margins. Unless you really need to upgrade I'd wait another year. Doesn't matter which OEM you buy from you're getting less for more.
I'm confused, I have the 3060 model and have the 1TB PM9A1. Per Samsung's website it's a gen4 nvme with a max speed of 7000mbs read. It's basically a 980 Pro. Why aren't these operating at 4.0pcie speeds with the 11800H?
I noticed that you test the higher tier laptops at 1080p when their native resolution is 1440p. If you purchase a 1440p laptop and play it at 1080 wouldn't the image look blurrier than playing it on a native 1080 panel? If I want to play at 1080 would it not be better to buy a "lower tier" laptop. Such as the HP Omen vs the Legion 5 Pro. Otherwise I would be forced to play at native 1440p due to the blurriness from downscaling and get 20ish percent less frames than what is listed on these rankings. If you have time, I would really like to know your thoughts because I am deciding between the HP Omen and the Prometheus XVI and I want the best experience at 1080 because I feel like playing at 1440 would be too much of a performance hit. Thank you in advance!

360 hertz monitors in general is a total ripoff unless you have an RTX 3090, let alone 360 Hz display on a laptop. Its just a waste of money. 240 Hz is the best for a 1080p panel in my opinion and for a 2K panel, 165 Hz is the sweet spot.
I agree, unless that 300 hz+ has less than 3 ms g2g response time and a MUX switch.
You can get this laptop with a 1440p 240hz panel
Imo with the amount of money to upgrade to a 300hz+ monitor on a laptop, just buy an external one for bigger size, better panel etc.
And maybe cheaper
Sometimes it is not about the refresh rate that the buyers want. For laptops, sometimes only the higher refresh rate option gives you a higher color gamut which is the deciding factor.
I've had 3 gaming laptops over the last 6 years: one Dell with i5 6300hq (had a decent battery life) one overpowered with i7 8750h (had less than 1 hour battery life) and now a lenovo legion 5 with r7 5800h that gives me more than 6 hours of battery life when doing web browsing and docs, it's just amazing

As always, straight to the points, a lot of useful information given, moderate pace, definitely my first go to channel for any laptop review 😁👍

I wanted a laptop but seems theyre all either too expensive, loud/heavy or bad screens bad specs *sigh*
I guess I should just build a desktop ...I dont find good prebuilts in Canada but even there it's very expensive, with the screen it's the a little more expensive than recent gaming laptops. Also I've never done it before so it makes me nervous.. I dont want to fk up.
same.. many of old user have boot issue.. their firmware just like garbage..
I have the same laptop
The reason why the laptop does not turn on when you press the button from the first time is because it is already booting up when you open the lid.
😂😂 That's funny and everyone was talking about the same "problem" haha
You also need to switch off sleep in BIOS or it bricks itself when there's a BIOS update queued
It's awful. It's not like better sensors are much more expensive, so it's strange that such expensive laptops still use terrible webcams (terrible speakers are common in gaming laptops too).
why HP OMEN 16 Advantage is not on your list ?

Jarrod, can you test the benefit of MUX switches on laptops with advanced Optimus? It shouldn't make a difference anymore...
In eSport titles with frame rates over 120 fps or so, it can make a difference; the iGPU can be a bottleneck at super-high framerates.
@@cameronbosch1213 As far as I know, Advanced Optimus could bypass the iGPU, so the mentioned problem is not there.
What do you mean it shouldn't make a difference? You are saying keeping Optimus enabled and let automatically the Nvidia software switch to the dGPU on the fly? Yeah, it might be happening I guess. @@TheMacco26 Because Advanced Optimus is different from Optimus, I guess?
For me I was having the same power button issue until I realized that opening the lid turns on the system (slowly). So if I open the lid and hit the power button, the system thinks I'm trying to turn it off. Either use the lid only to turn on the system or disable that feature in BIOS to get the power button to work normally.

I never fully nailed it down, but it might be related to the power on when you open the lid and forget it does that and press the button, really not sure it was kind of random.
Where did you bought it?
Sounds like you got a good deal!
Mine inspiron 15 also does the same. Fans ramp up to full speed even when its siting idle at random and spitting out cold air from the vents.

The Jack Mic (Realtek Audio) also fails to register any sound (green bars) when trying to test through Control Panel>Sound>Recording.
I prefer the size of the Legion, but the iCUE battery drain issue after 2 years is dumb.

Ive been following your videos for a long time and bought legion last year thanks to your reviews, now time to upgrade a bit.
In reality i bought one , and even though is new i have a real battery problem. It doesn’t even surpass 2hours without playing
What are your views on m15 r4 ,do well address same problems if we go for it
Would you recommend this machine for running deep learning algorithms using keras and tensor flow?
Is it more expensive than the last year's model? If so, you could title the video 'mo money, mo problems'...

@@roboticvenom1935 You don't want them thicker, you want them wider. Bigger heat transfer area. I'm guessing you mean from a birdseye view though so fair enough.
Either way you can troubleshoot.
@@allypezz I meant wider
Well detailed breakdown as always.
Much appreciated!
Please do a review of Helios 300 i7 11th gen Rtx 3060
Will you test the new MacBook Pro?
No. Plenty of other channels will already do it and they're too expensive here for me to want to buy one.
Just found this model on sale + outlet price in Germany. For the 1TB, 16GB RAM, Intel i7-11800H, RTX 3070, 165Hz 1080p configuration it is about 1400€ (about 1530$ USD). Was wondering if at that price this laptop would be a good purchase. The Alienware look and feeling is of course a big plus but not too important for me as I’m currently using a XPS15 for just all around tasks. With a new job now I get a work laptop and I can consider getting a full fledged gaming laptop instead. What’s your thoughts on this model at this price point?
It's a good price. I have the same as yours but my screen is 240hz 1440p screen.
Jarrod could you review the Msi gf 66 laptops? Thanks
I'm getting vertigo. At the end of every sentence it feels like I'm falling through the floor. LOL. Like being on a rollercoaster.
if there another lap with same specs in Hp model .. will it be better ?
and what about x15 with same specs (x15 has 4 fans) ?
Can you review the msi gf65 thin. One of the cheapest rtx 3060 laptops out there.
If it have 4 core i think it will bottleneck the gpu unless it is indie or old games
@@mrbobgamingmemes9558 It has a 6 core i7 10750h.
@@mrbobgamingmemes9558 is has 75 w tgp(rtx 3060)
@@gibingeorge3352 if it 6 core should be fine as long it is not thernal throttling
@@mrbobgamingmemes9558 It heats up a lot though. But I have seen videos where they resolve the issue by undervolting it.
Just ordered this unit but with the 240hz screen and the 3070 card. Question-- after using the HDMI port, what is the best way to hook up a second external monitor?
Buy a thunderbolt type c to display port and then use this to connect to your external monitor, for best experience.
@@anandusreekumar6980 will this work with a vr headset?
I was planning to buy Alienware m15 r6 with rtx 3070, it is worth to buy or not bro till me our suggestion, i am so confused right now
Do u recommend to upgrade it to 32gb Ram? Or it is not neccesary?
My R5 unit has been excellent thus far..
No complaints..
I was waiting for this one 👀
Alienware is shit buddy.. he alreadfy reviewed same chassis but AMD version with r5, and it was SHITE. idk why you would wait for it
@@roboticvenom1935 for the review of course and now I know it's shit 😂😂😂
What I like most about your reviews are that 1. You dont use fucking clickbaits and irritating thumbnails without letting user know what the fuck the content is.
2. You are straight to the point without stretching your videos unnecessarily with tons of ads. 3. You dont talk so much bullshit with tons of useless cuts.
4. You dont try to be funny. I mean dude I just want to know how the laptop performs.
Are any of the ssd slots gen 4?
