Based on a UK business and trademark search, Ellington Pens is owned by the same person who own(ed) Dryden Designs. Neither Ethan Ellington nor Michael Dryden actually exist. The person behind these two brands has other e-commerce websites with fake employee profiles and other unsavory business tactics. And that's just what I dug up in an hour's worth of internet search.
Thanks for sharing your discoveries. Interesting. There are some whos focus is business. They look for opportunity to make a profit. I am interested in the pens more than the story. I do not see this business surviving long.
@@chrisrap52 Agreed, no unprofitable business survives indefinitely!
I thought i recognised the design. Dryden and Wordsworth pens immediately came to mind.
I wish I'd done my research before purchasing one. These pens aren't special as they claim, they're a basic fountain pen manufactured in China, supposedly based on a UK based design.
Some reviewers point out that ethan Ellington is just a made up front man...there's a video of him, and the reviewer says, 'it's not his voice, and it's not Ellington in the video', just some marketing dude.
In my own opinion, these are just basic pens worth no more than 5gbp or 7usd, mass produced in China.
My lifelong collection of authentic Parker pens of various types, runs rings around the cheap mass manufactured pens.
I bought one and it arrived yesterday - they are cheap but the actual writing, which is what a pen is for, is great- I have owned a lot of fountain pens for at least 50 years including Montblanc's. Overall its a great pen for the price and a good pen regardless of price.
I believe you mean inexpensive, great value. Yes, they are.
Hi Chris. I agree with your conclusions. I was pleased with your writing sample but less impressed with the design.
Thanks, Chris! Nice to get a look at an "outsourced" pen. This seems to be in the same ballpark as Scrivener, Wordsworth and Black,
maybe others I don't know. The stiped one seemed to have some paint job issues, didn't look quite clean and sharp all the way round.
Dryden Designs. Beiluner. I have to say, that for rather less, one can get a nicer-looking, perhaps better-writing, better-constructed from better materials pen from Hongdian, Jinhao, Kaigelu, etc. -- and come up with one's own creative boxing solutions for gifts.
Good, candid review. I am always pleased when more entrepreneurs enter into our esoteric world.
Thanks Peter! 😄
I have the Nautilus and love it. Medium nib. I like the grip, it's the perfect size and grip slickness for me. I have small hands and find most pens made solely for men with large hands and fingers. I'm finding this to be very comfortable to use. The cap is heavy and if you post it it does pull a bit but I enjoy that although I use it both posted and unposted. I agree it's not 'luxury" but it certainly is very nice for the price (which is why I got it) and I am more than pleased with it and enjoy using it, which is everyday.
Glad you found your pen. Thanks for watching.
Nice looking pen. Is it luxurious? Like you, the term is bantered too much. It is more of a marketing gimmick than a standard. For me, a pen is luxurious if it feels good in the hand, has an appeal to the eye that is almost distracting, and writes wonderfully, then it would be a candidate for the word luxurious. Your review meets one of the criteria; it is a smooth writer. Other than that, I don't see anything that would make me want to buy this pen, especially since there are other pens that achieve all the points I laid out above.
Excellent review, Chris.
I think that a more appropriate word for this pen might be “formal.” It’s more like a cocktail dress or a business suit and less like jeans and everyday shoes, but a cocktail dress or business suit is not necessarily luxurious. I own this pen, and it works well enough, covering all the bases. I wouldn’t use it for drawing, creative writing, journaling, or note taking, but I might use it as an office pen in a business setting. I might take it with me to a business meeting or keep it in my handbag on an occasion where I might have to get more dressed up.
@@barbarajloriordan2697 perhaps even "classic"
I agree with your assessment. Enjoyed the video. 👍👍👍😎
Glad you enjoyed it
Definitely looks better in the black, but still very meh.
And I am right with you on the 'luxury' issue.
Nice review. That one is *very* reminiscent of Pelikan pens.
It would be nice to have a comparison with something like the Wingsung 698 or Jinhao 500.
I do not focus on comparisons. I like to focus on one pen.
I am not interested in luxury pens, either. For me, though, there’s a lot to like about this pen. It writes well, starts up dependably, and is easy to clean and maintain. It’s not too heavy, and it is also good looking. I can usually find something not to like about any pen that I own, but I honestly can’t find anything to complain about with this one. I think it’s a pretty solid pen.
There are pens that one would use to get down and dirty and write one’s innermost thoughts, and pens that one would use more for public purposes. This pen has a certain look to it that renders it suitable for display. Along this line, this might be a suitable pen to sign an important legal document or take on a job interview.
Agreed. There are many nice pens. I present them so you can decide if you like them.
Thank you. I like this one well enough.
Thank you for your review, Chris! We think your comments were fair and balanced, and we'll be taking your feedback onboard for future product iterations. Thank you again!
I figure any fountain pen is a luxury. Any pen really. I’ve never heard of a human who required food, water, shelter, air, and pens to survive. Many of us who collect fountain pens will argue that point, but there’s no science to support our views at this time.
Granted.
Nib looks like parker IM.
My reaction is, "Meh."
But then I saw a close-up shot of the striped barrel. One of the stripes had a raw and jagged edge. In fact two of the stripes join each other at the bottom of the barrel. Seeing these flaws would drive me absolutely crazy, no matter what the price.
The defects, which certainly should have been caught by Quality Control, puts this product completely out of my interest even if it writes like a Montblanc. At the $40+ retail price range means that it cost a couple of bucks (or less) to make in China, so not exactly a Hand Crafted creation by any means.
Now I see that Amazon has this Luxury Fountain Pen priced at less than $20.00 plus a $5 off coupon, delivered in less than two days. This pretty much says it all.
WOW. Amazing. 😯
"Achievers"---------🙄
😆
Quite a bad looking pen, unfortunately.
😎
I don’t think so.
@@ellingtonpens815 Not a great strategy to hone in on random comments. I think you have a much different consumer than the viewers of this channel
@@buck-pucker You're most certainly right, thanks Buck!
Lol @ Chinese knock off of 40 years Pelikan m800
Not close to a knock-off.
