An escalator is terrifying for someone who doesn't know how it works. Kudos to the guy who was kind and helped them.
They know how it works. The railing is supposed to move along with the stairs.

Actually most have the rubber part move with the escalator. That escalator may have been broken.
The rubber part is meant to move with the escalator as you can see from the first lady that got on you can tell she realises and let's go.

It's not just ignorance, it's the fact that the handrail was supposed to be moving as the stairs were, but it was not. Anyone who tried to rely on the handrail for stability was going to wind up in this situation

My grandmother was afraid of " the moving" stairs until she passed. I remember as a child finding every elevator in every store we went in, if it had 2 levels. Thank you kind sir. They could have been hurt.

Sure could have. I saved a friends’ daughter from some hurt when her jacket got stuck in an escalator. I just kept pulling until it came a loose. She would not have been able to do it on her own.

I thought I was going to have to go back down the mountain with it! In my efforts to pull the jacket out of the chair, I actually tripped over the cord that kept the whole thing plugged in. It cut the power source, the chairlift stopped, and half of my classmates were left hanging over the side of the mountain halfway up. I was popular for a couple of hours. Not.

Also, if you read the description, the handrail was not moving. So people who would normally have hung onto it out of fear we're having trouble because the stairs were moving but the handrail was not
hace mucho años sucedió con mi ya anciano padre quien hizo hijos hasta los 60 años y mis hermanos muy jovencitos se permitieron reír al verlo asustado al inicio y con ello se.rieron otros usuarios del centro comercial pero les pegué una recogida tanto a ello como a los otros cretinos, que no les quedaron ganas de burlarse de nadie más en vez de ayudar porque de lo memos que les dije fue de asegurarse ser dejar el planeta en sus años de juventud o madurez porque de viejos iban a cosechar la maldad y las burlas que estaban sembrando y que si me enojada les iba a borrar la risa a punta de golpes!.
No sé que aspecto tenía mi rostro pero hasta los machos desconocidos se pusieron serios y las hembras idiotas subieron peldaños para salir de las escaleras más rápidamente que nosotros.

This is Nigeria, but this scene wouldn't be so strange in Zambia. There's only one escalator there, and people treat it like an amusement park ride. Here, the railing was not moving as it's supposed to. I suspect that the man who helped them is their father and the person filming is their mother.

There are still a lot of people usually from small towns and rural areas who have never been on an escalator
I think this is escalator failure because those hand grips need to move 🙄
When I was a child I almost got caught in one of these things. I was always scared to get on them when I was little. I was with my mom and my older brother in a mall. My mom had decided to go up and I started to follow with my brother behind me. I was maybe 5 or 6. My brother was picking on me and wouldn’t stop and he wouldn’t move so my foot was forced in to the teeth of one of these things. Thank God my mom quickly got my foot out of the shoe and hit the emergency stop button. My shoe was ruined but luckily it didn’t scratch my foot. These things can be so dangerous.

I have seen people get clothes stuck in them and that can lead to strangulation etc they need a lot of caution so it’s good they are practicing it in the video as rushing on their first go would be dangerous

Could be a potential safety feature. Might be needed if someone falls forward and/or have items that fall forward that could mow a person down ahead of them. They can grab the railing to avoid being trampled by a person or their things falling towards them as they near the landing down below. I seen a video of a woman who was almost off get run over by luggage falling towards her she couldn't outrun.
