Move over Triple H, there's a new reign of terror in town. If thou thought that Triple H as the world champion seriously shuved it, you aint seen nothing yet! 6 nwa world heavyweight title reigns over 4 years, early TNA was sometimes hard to watch. The most famous wrestler to struggle due to jeff jarretts reigns was Monty Brown but would it shock your little heads to know that there were others too?

Why didn't they do anything with Matt Morgan or Tomko? I mean the jump around, gymnastic style thing is cool if you like lucha libre, but they had good big men that couldve been stars too. Also, Hernandez.
Nothing wrong with Jarrett being the face of a little Indy promotion until they could build up and create or bring in stars but he buried those guys at every opportunity. The first match with Raven being the most unforgivable.
Go away heat. People saying he was a great heel at that time didn't watch it as it was happening. Nobody tuned in to see Jarett get his ass kicked. They tuned in because TNA had talented fresh talent who were having great matches.
People tuned in to TNA to watch the talented guys have great matches, then tuned out of Jarett's segments.
Jeff Jarrett is so odd. He was obviously a good worker, but he had a HHH connections, with a Shaun Michaels ego, X-Pac heat and a Hardcore Holly draw

I actually talked to double J a few times and he was a nice enough guy. He just envisioned himself as Jerry Lawler imho and was in the position to try to make that happen. It really hurt TNA though and if had been a better businessman, he would have probably seen that the situations between he and Lawler were apples and oranges and that him out of the title picture at least some of the time and trying to build new stars could have meant more money in the long run for him as an invested owner. I didn't really like Mike Graham, but he had Jarrett pegged as far as business goes: Small brained. Not a dime! Not a dime! Just hat to throw that in there.

He had the classic promoters kid syndrome in wrestling. Pushed to the top way too young, a regional star in a territory so he thinks he is a main event caliber draw, and then can't accept his position as an upper-mid card worker in a bigger company.

Probably why I never turned on tna cause JJ just didn’t appeal to me. Had he ran with styles raven and other guys instead of his ego perhaps they’d still be around.
Truth suffered the most. Dude has always been the total package. Charisma, promo skills and an amazing unique skill set. He could fly with the best cruiserweights but had a solid physique that could pass as a heavyweight.
Yep, he looked so legit they actually gave him a program against Cena too. At least he can say he is one of the first black world champions. The NWA title is no peanuts.

Say what you will about JJ as a person or how he's been booked throughout his career, the man knows how to properly wrestle (from a technical standpoint) I would never take booking advice from him but I would totally listen to him about mat wrestling

Yeah. Jarrett always had good matches. And back in the 90s and early 2000s he was a good solid heel. But once he started booking himself to constantly be involved, or championship and had to be on TV for long segments every week, he had super go away heat

It happens when a wrestler is owner or part owner of a promotion. It used to happen a lot back in the territory days.
I think he was just going through a mid life crisis. He was around late 30's during the time and after burning his bridges with WWE and WCW he had to do something. Combine that with an ego everybody but him says he had and being the leader in a wrestling company....yea makes sense now that you look at all that.

HHH's reign of terror was essentially a slow build to establish Randy Orton and Batista. HHH also put or tried to put over some people. Even if that last part wasn't true, Orton and Batista alone are sufficient redemption for the HHH Reign of Terror. It also helps that HHH was a legit Main Event Heel.

Very true. I'm sure Vince wanted him to remain champion too. And, it's not just the fact that Jarrett won, it's definitely how he was winning these matches. I don't think Triple H would've ever stooped so low, even if he slowly crawled to put away his opponents via pinfall

@@rlouie05 I wouldn't be surprised if Booker T being a former WCW star factored into the decision, but I think it was more about Triple H remaining World Champ, at the suggestion of himself and Vince.
I've seen people suggesting the WCW factor applied with regards to Sting though.

Booker, RVD, Scott Steiner, and Kevin Nash (the latter likely didn't care about pushes by that stage of his career though) all met defining losses by Mr. Stephanie McMahon.
It was a bit of a surprise that they picked an older Batista (at the time advertised as 2 years younger than HHH) to finally pin his mentor 3 times in a row, but all that got erased too by WM35.

I didn't watch TNA. I knew that Jarrett was pushing himself but this was just ridiculous. This was much worse than Triple H.

Monty Brown was like Ken Shamrock in TNA or a lesser Version of Barry Windham in the NWA. Talented guys who had the tools they needed, but were not fully invested in what they were doing. We can say what if's all day and that is fun to a certain degree, but it would be foolish to try to build heavily around someone like.

Jarrett's title defenses can be summed up as:
1: Ref bump.
2: Everyone and their hamster running in.
3: EL KABONG!
4: Jarrett wins and everyone groans.
5: Rinse and repeat.
I mean, this sounds like Russo booking in a nutshell, only less title changes than normal. Making everyone look like idiots is however very much a Russo move, so it still qualifies.

Personally i think R-Truth was the most damaged. He went from beign a Top Wrestler in a brand new company to became, years later, a clown in WWE. Without Jarrett he could have been the next Booker T
I agree. But at the very least, the good news about R-Truth’s current role in WWE are that (1) he’s the Ace of the 24/7 Division, (2) likely making more money than he did in TNA, and (3) he’s surprisingly close to Vince McMahon.

@@waltersocie4434 No surprise. He might be in great shape (easily better than me), but he's almost 50, so the limited segments allows him to shine and keep his career going longer. Plus unlike in TNA, he has mainstream exposure with the WWE (R-Truth has defended the 24/7 Championship on the sports shows).
He's also well-liked by everyone. And from what I heard, Brock Lesnar wants to do another comedy segment with R-Truth.

The true Reign of Terror was from the AWA. The owner Verne Gagne held his own title 10 times and held it for a combined 4,677 days. When he lost the belt he would get it back a few days after. His last reign lasted almost a year but he retired. His longest reign was 2625 days from August of 68 to November of 75. Now that is a reign of terror.

I never "got" Monty Brown. I thought the Pounce was the dumbest, weakest finisher ever, and his character always struck me as odd. He definitely looked like a main event wrestler, but always seemed green to me.

Yeah til Slow Stiff Khali won the Big Gold Belt in 07 for which should've been Mark Henry instead so he can have an early Hall of Pain.
Until 2004. Smackdown started to suck after Mania that year.
I loved the reign of terror. Evolution was my favourite stable of all time!! They were a massive reason i kept watching Raw.
@@alexcasares5943 Mark Henry wasn't exactly viewed much better than Khali at that point, unfortunately. Mostly because he'd never been given anything to work with, as it turned out, but fans weren't exactly crying out for him to be in the main event.
The Hall of Pain only really worked because it came out of nowhere, he'd had time away from the screen, and almost everything else around that time was genuinely fucking diabolical (We'd just had one of the worst WrestleManias of all time, Daniel Bryan hadn't won the MITB at that point, and they were willing to take a risk on Henry because Punk and Cena were carrying everything on their own). Wouldn't have had any of those luxuries in '07.

Monty Brown got screwed the most. Ron Killings second. At least Ron Killings had the 3LK thing going on. I liked that back in the day.Monty had fuck all after he lost.
Monty had some good charisma I think he had the look the company could have used to grow
@@simoncobian2816 I agree. At that time he had the makings of main event guy. I feel him and Ron could have done a good story line with the belt on the line. Starting off as a respectable match between two black wrestlers who came from nothing. And made it to the top. Despite people trying to hold them back their whole lives. Then it could have spiraled off with one being a true heel etc.
Having The Stroke as a finisher didn't help Jarrett either. It's such an uninspiring move. A better, more dynamic finisher would have helped him a lot.
It's the most awkward-looking move.
A good heel finisher either has a quick set up (so they can steal a win) or looks particularly devastating. The Stroke does neither of those things

His real finisher is a ref bump. It happens 100% of the time.
The thing with HHH was, he looked and talked like a main eventer, and his in ring work was as good as anybodies at the time. At least amongst the smatteting of burials there were good matches and good segments.
Jeff Jarret was merely indulging his own ego. Sure he could work OK, and he could sometimes cut a decent promo, but I always looked at him as a mid card heel at best. And he did it well. Never a main eventer.
I always thought that HHH was just lacking the charisma of the Rock or Stone Cold..
@@16rumpole Definitely. His in-ring work wasn't really as entertaining as Rock or Austin, either. It was very plodding and workman-like. His mic work also didn't come close to Austin or Rock and it felt like he would just brag about himself or insult others in a straightforward way (and Rock did a very accurate impression of how droning and boring HHH's mic work could be, lol). He did have a good look and I do think his "The Game" theme when he got it definitely made him feel like more of a main eventer but he ultimately made his chops on being the guy who kept screwing the Rock and sometimes Austin.
I also think that pairing up with Stephanie (both in real life and in story) and getting to work more closely with her and Vince as part of the McMahon family helped him since those two were actually better heels than him in terms of playing a character. It was fun to hate Vince and Stephanie. HHH though always gave me this nagging feeling that he was jealous of Rock and Austin in real life and that some of the things he said (especially towards Rock) weren't just a work.

Evolution was the reason why alot of people watched RAW at the time. They were amazing heels. If Krispin Wah didn't do what he did, he would've been seriously elevated. Come on his Rumble and Mania run was phenomenal!
This really makes John Cena beating Nexus seem not that bad. I never watched TNA, but this would have been rough.
To be fair, even if Cena put the Nexus over at SummerSlam, many of the Nexus guys would flop as the next big things. For example: Wade Barrett was heavily injury prone, Skip Sheffield/Ryback was a very reckless worker, Michael Tarver was overall forgettable, Heath Slater was a comedy mid-carder, David Otunga was terrible in the ring and Justin Gabriel was a cruiserweight casuals didn't give a damn about. It's pretty much safe to say that Cena did not screw the Nexus. It was the Nexus who screwed the Nexus.
Cena did kill a generation of wrestlers with one angle.

I could never understand why JJ was always the champ whenever I watched TNA on the Wrestling Channel on Sky TV, but later I learned he was an owner.
And that his friend was doing the booking. The fact that Russo figured he'd continue the meta crap from the WCW days by putting himself on air is quite baffling, really. All the interference and ref bumps and the ref ignoring the use of outside objects is textbook Russo.
And the fact that Jarrett went along with that is testament to how poorly suited he was to running that company.

I couldn't have worded this better myself. Whenever I watched early TNA as a kid, I loved most of the product, but HATED JJ. I could never understand why the promotion kept putting him in the main event.

Thankfully I got into TNA when I heard Christian debuted and I missed the vast majority of this BS. I'd heard Jarrett used to book himself as a main attraction but I had no idea it was this bad.

@@darylhall2198 He didn't try to force anything, he just wasn't being utilised in WWE as he, and everyone else, felt he should have been. He has everything you look for in a main eventer - charisma as a face, great heel work, excellent mic skills, and great story-telling and technique in the ring. Every main event match he was in was a great match and well deserving of the top of the card spot. At least Vince eventually saw a bit of sense and had him feuding for the world title with Randy when he got back to the main roster on Smackdown, cause it's what everyone wanted.

The first win over Styles, the first win over Raven, and the second win over Monty Brown might be more egregious than any Hogan, Cena, or Triple H match.

As much as Triple H gets dunked on for the Reign of Terror on RAW, I am going to play Devil's Advocate and explain why it was not as bad compared to Double J.
1. RAW's main event scene was off to a bad start when Triple H was awarded the Big Gold Belt. Stone Cold had retired, The Rock went to Hollywood, and Undertaker was a Smackdown exclusive superstar. Those left on RAW for Triple H to feud with were guys like RVD, Booker T, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner, Goldberg, Kane and HBK. Only Kane and HBK were "made" by the WWE, and we all know how badly Vince treats talent that he never made himself. Of course he was not going to make guys like RVD or Goldberg look strong.
2. Triple H may have strings to pull cause of his marriage to Stephanie McMahon, in the end, it's Vince who gets the final say in anything. Unlike Jeff Jarrett, who literally owns the company, so in that comparison, it would be like if Vince puts the belt on himself 5 times. Yes, we know Vince gave himself the championship, but it was not a long reign (6 days, albeit he vacated the title, so he was never pinned nor made to tap out), and it was for selling a storyline. Plus, Vince is more than willing to sell his body to make a star, something which is kind of lacking in Jarrett's feuds.
3. At the very end, the Reign of Terror made stars out of Randy Orton and Batista. Orton is a strange case, as the initial babyface push failed to gain momentum, but he was able to recover from it and develop his Viper persona years later. The rub planned for Orton went to Batista, who was able to get over organically by being himself, and benefitted from Orton's botched push. That could have been Monty Brown or Ron Killings getting the Batista treatment if the finishes were clean, but of course, Double J had to pull the rug from under them cause reasons.

Hunter buried Randy Orton. As for Batista, Dave was ultimately shipped back to Smackdown and Hunter was on top again like none of it ever happened. The fact that HHH was never on Smackdown himself is beyond ridiculous, but I was always glad that it kept him from tainting the show that was wrestling driven rather than long promos.
Only thing I disagree with this comment was how you said Randy’s viper persona got the momentum… if anything I think his career was saved when he began a rivalry with the Undertaker from Wrestlemania then he was was drafted to Smackdown and how they kept it going.

I meant that Orton used being kicked out of Evolution as a primary basis for developing his Viper character, especially once he started feuding with Triple H after revitalizing his career on Smackdown. I definitely agree Orton was not ready to be a babyface then, since he had a reputation as a douche both in and out of the ring, even though WWE trusted him enough to award him the Big Gold Belt (not to mention the youngest World Heavyweight Champion at that time).

Then, it's kinda hard for someone who has watched TNA during the Jarrett era to go back to TNA. Who goes back to watching a show they've seen in the past and just wasn't good enough to be worth it?

Perception wasn't the same as it is now.. TNAs undercard has almost always outshined the main event Except the Styles,Angle Bully Ray, and MAYBE bobby Roodes run..
Sting, Christian, Jeff Hardy etc were getting outworked by the tag division, the X division, and rarely the women's division.. TNA had the same problem whether Jeff was there or not: Screwy finishes in the main event that got nobody over.. The mid card was the only thing that was decent until those same guys would end up getting screwy finishes when they got to the main event

@@Shredkowski Hogan was an Eric Bischoff guy who was originally a Vince McMahon guy. Hogan's political acumen combined with his excellent timing of becoming the big guy served him well and got himself perks other wrestlers would never have dreamed of.
Russo hated Hogan. There's a reason why Hogan sued Vince Russo after he left WCW in 1999 after Russo went into business with himself after betraying Bischoff and Hogan and then burying Hogan.
It’s really surreal to think about some alternate reality where R Truth went on to have a long and illustrious career as a big player in wrestling, instead of going to more of a comedic role in WWE. Early TNA was so much fun and so exciting...then there was everything Jeff Jarrett was ever a part of. I basically skipped the main events during this whole era.
Ya and if you add on Jarrett’s lame WCW titles before TNA, there was way too much Jarrett as world champion and it just wasn’t believable!! 🙄 I also skipped a lot of the Jarrett matches from back in those days!!
With Triple H, his reign was piss but at the bare minimum he least looked like he belonged on a main event stage. And most importantly his reign of terror helped create two new stars (Orton and especially Batista) so it had some long lasting benefit to the company after the fact.
Jarrett was a solid worker, but he was a midcard level talent and never felt like he belonged on the big stage especially presented as THE guy of the company. And he helped literally nobody in his reign, as the guy who ended his reign (Sting) was already a legend before entering TNA/
While I do agree that HHH's run at the top was do to his connection with the McMahon family, a lot of people seem to forget that he had won the title at least once, if not twice before he started dating Stephani. So yes I think it was extended because of that, but that isn't how it started. And the only reason JJ got the title in TNA was because he was the owner.

This is the biggest abuse of power in the wrestling industry. The guy booked himself to be champ all the time. I never knew how bad it was until watching this. Now you have Cody in AEW, one of the hottest stars, booked his first world title match against Chris Jericho and if he lost he'd never challenge for the world title again. And he lost. Now yes Cody could overturn this one day but at the very least he isn't constantly going after the belts.
If I owned my own wrestling company, and only if I could get myself over with the fans, would I book myself in the world title scene. If I could pull it off yeah I'd put the world title on myself, for like 100 days, then drop it and never try again. I'd rather just book myself in a history making hell in the cell match.
In my case lose it in a Hell of a Cell type Match to make the victory memorable.

You know, I watch a bunch of Jim Cornette's videos because I find him hilarious a lot of the time and even agree with a lot of his criticisms but one thing I just can't possibly understand is his appreciation for Jarrett. I watched TNA back in the day when this reign of terror was in full effect and I hated it, it was beyond frustrating. I just wanted to watch some fun x-division matches but everything else was just shit and Jarrett was a huge reason for that.
For someone that Cornette says is a so called master of wrestling psychology, I don't see anything of the sort especially with him kicking out of everything, burying all the young guys and keeping himself on top in what was essentially his own company. Sure, Hogan and the other washed up old, wrinkly assholes that showed up later thanks to horrendous management sank the ship but Jarrett wasn't much better. And I know you like Russo but I consider him to be a worse version of slapnuts. At least old slapnuts could work.

People were already being fed a reign of terror in WWE, the last thing they needed was a poor knock off reign of terror.
As you highlighted many times, there were guys who could have carried the company instead of Jarett who would have been much fresher. How many times did they pull the rug out from AJ when he could easily have led the company?
I actually followed the product from its inception when I caught it randomly on AXS where I am. I enjoyed the talent I never got to see on WWE like Styles, Daniels, AMW, Sabin etc. but everytime Jarett came on screen, I groaned since his main event matches were always average compared to the classic matches.
Early TNA ppv's (not the weekly ones) were Jarett's matches being utterly forgettable while other stars shined. Turning point 2004 was all about Triple X vs AMW. Final resolution's standout match was the ultimate X match, not Jarett burying Monty. Against all odds 2005 was about Styles vs Daniels, not Jarett vs Nash and so on.
Despite Jarett putting himself in the main event for all those PPVs except turning point 2004, nobody would say that the reason they tuned in was to see Jarett. So for those sucking Jarett's cock about him being a great heel, you clearly weren't watching the product back then to know how much people didn't want to see Jarett. The boos he got was people who wanted him to be gone.

At least Triple H's reign of terror can be somewhat justified, considering he was the last remaining "top guy" of the attitude era after Rock and Stone Cold left. Not to mention, Randy Orton and Batista came out as the top stars at the end of it all, both of whom went on to become the face of the company at the peak of their careers. We got the memorable Benoit win at WM and a compelling feud between Triple H and Shawn Michaels. And most important thing of all, it made the World Heavyweight title a big deal. Honestly, excluding the Booker T humiliation, the awful Kane storyline and the boring promos, Triple H's reign of terror wasn't all that bad. A hell of a lot better than the nightmare TNA fans got with Jeff Jarrett.
NAH, sorry mate but you left alot out of it. I agree, this Jeff Jarret reign is horrible and arguably worse in terms of story line. However I hate hearing how Trip was "the last Top Guy" from the AE when he was barely top 10. Guys like Taker, Kane, Jericho and Kurt Angle were better written if not bigger names by the end of the AE. All of which could easily portray a great heel. Trip buried all 4 at one point (Taker being the exception since actually has major wins over HHH) and Randy's momentum did not come from getting demolished by HHH.
Trip buried Kane, recently unmasked and was actually a dominant figure, Booker, Jericho and the most over guy in the company at the time, RVD. Let one of these guys handle the belt for awhile, and WWE gets carried seamlessly into the Ruthless Aggression era until Cena, Batista and Orton come in.
Instead, WWE lost over half their viewers, the WH title was devalued severely, the Undisputed title was meant to fix all that BS but then got pushed to Smackdown. Which later became the better show so they split the titles again. All while Triple H refused to lose cleanly to any of the new stars. TO THIS DAY, you can argue his reign never truly ended. Guys like Curtis Axel, CM Punk, Sting, Paul London, Umaga had to eat clean losses while at their hottest moments in their WWE careers.
Oh and dont get me started on the Goldberg saga...another guy HHH buried that essentially killed any WCW fans interest in coming over to the rival.

Stone Cold, The Rock and Triple H, in that order. Angle and Jericho only existed as placeholders when WWE didn't want to put the title on the big 3 over and over. After his undisputed title win, Jericho went out of the world title picture and pretty much became a midcarder. As for Taker, well, even tho he was technically still a top guy, he was not quite on the same level. In fact, he jobbed to the big 3 all the time. It was after 2007 that Taker became THE phenom and the face of the company along with Cena.
As for Triple H devaluing the WHC, that's just not true. Towards the end of WCW, their world title became an absolute joke. Guys like David Arquette and Vince Russo were holding the title at some point. Putting a world title on Vince Russo is like the biggest disrespect you can show to that title lmao. Triple H took that joke of a belt and made it legitimate again. It was the fact he held and defended it on WWE's flagship show is what made it prestigious again. Without his reign of terror, the WCW title would've ended up like hardcore or 24/7 championship.

They started off so good. Pushing new stars like AJ Styles, Ron Killings, and Low Ki. They even had likable vets like Raven, Jerry Lynn, and Ken Shamrock. Then it all went to hell fast.

What I never got with Jeff Jarrett is, he used that guitar in damn near every match. Why didn't anyone ever say, "You are banned from bringing the guitar or anything other than the belt out!"? At least with Triple H, he got his sledgehammer from under the ring. Also why did none of the refs ever go, "Why are there wooden fragments all over the ring?" It was just such a stupid brain dead gimmick, that pushed suspension of disbelief beyond any possible threshold.
I actually like Jeff, but couldn’t stand HHH, oddly enough, but Jarrett’s run was a million times worse than HHH. At least Hunter had claim time being the third guy behind Rock and Austin. I agree, but IMO HHH wasn't even the 3rd guy. I say 4th because I have it Austin, Rock, Taker, than HHH. Jarrett was a solid hand but never brought him as a legit MEer. In TNA you can tell several guys where more over than he was. That included Raven in 03. Jeff Hardy 04, and Brown in 05. Other guys had a lot of room to grow if given.

@@Steinerecliner Again not a HHH fan at all, but there was a period, especially around winter/springish 01 where Austin was getting stale and BikerTaker hadn’t quite hit its stride yet that you could’ve made a case for HHH even being THEE guy, or at least the next in line. He didn’t have was the crossover connection, but he was getting there and objectively everything was clicking for him.
@@Steinerecliner na taker was never the guy. Ever. His runs have always been short, with good reason. He was always the outsider and never really the title picture, compared to the others. HHH was literally the best heel serious heel of fhd attitude. Was he as popular as Austin and rock, no. But the Rock was never a serious heel and people always wanted to cheer him. Triple h was a fantastic third string and foil guy for those two.

Who did Austin face most of the time in some way? Taker. What WM for so long been ONE of the marquee matches, the Taker streak. Kane and Taker was the biggest feud during the Attitude era behind Austin and McMahon. Taker is a special attraction. Same what Andre was. He didn't need to be a champion to be a draw. He himself was the draw. Taker was the same thing. Talk about cheering, WHY you think Taker heel runs where all under a year after he face turn in 92?

@@whothefookisthatguy2156 He was a good midcard heel in the WWF and early on in WCW, but I never bought him as someone who you could build a company around, someone that I would pay money to go watch or see on PPV. He just didn’t have the charisma or the look. He should’ve been an upper midcard heel, great as IC or US champion, MAYBE give him a cup of coffee with the world title, but that’s it.

This wasn’t just a Reign of Terror. It was a Reign of Terror and a Super Cena. I didn’t even realize he had the insane baby face push. Overcoming the odds only works in moderation. Stone Cold didn’t have to overcome odds to beat Taker in 98, and he occasionally got dicked over, which made things better when he won

The difference is that stone cold and la roca did not have a roster full of wrestlers that are maint eventers material. Most had gone to WCW (nash, hall, hart, randy savage, luger).
Cena, for his part, was new to the company and came to the main event in 3 years with other wrestlers who had been around for a longer time and he was not given the world title at his best (booker T, RVD, Steiner, Cristian, etc ..)
But if they had been in the Cena shoes, they might have given stone cold or the rock a Mega push over others wrestlers.
Overcoming odds was an ok thing to do back in the day when wrestling was for kids, and hell overcoming odds had us just Hulk Hogan winning against Andre was nearly impossible. Once the eras changed in the 90s & the demographics switched, that shit didn't fly.
