    A luxury brand should be able to tell you exactly where their leather came from, in addition to the exact type of leather being used. That should just be standard. If a farm to table restaurant can do it for their dishes, then so can any purveyor of $10,000 bags. If they don’t, they’re hiding something.

    I saw a thread in purseforum about chanel leather a while ago. A lady poured boiling water, ketchup, clorox and acetone on her metallic 19 and… nothing happened. Knowing it’s supposed to be lambskin, theoretically it couldn’t hold that well all those aggressions. She said she cannot believe it is actually lambskin.
    Other lady commented that she developed a new skin allergy to her chanel bag, her doctor asked for the chemical components in the leather. She went to chanel, asked for that information but they refused to give her. She even allegedly got a refund.
    At this point I can’t believe anything Chanel says. I’ve read some ladies had vintage bags that never got moisturized and still look like brand new.
    I’m super curious about the coating chanel uses on its bags.

    I bought a Chanel seasonal mini flap in caviar "leather" (the one with the heart adjustment chain)from the Melbourne boutique back in February this year. After the first couple of wears of no more than a couple of hours each I noticed that the caviar texture on the back pocket had started to wear of. I live in New Zealand and we don't have any Chanel boutiques here so I couldn't take the bag back to a store. I decided I would wear it a few more times to see what would happen, maybe the first damage was done by my clothes. I only wore soft clothing when I wore the bag, which was roughly another 4 or 6 times. ( I am a "collector" so this isn't my everyday bag). Essentially all of the caviar on the edge of the back pocket has now worn off. I went to Sydney earlier this month and took my bag into the boutique (Westfield City) to see if they could replace or repair it. I was told it was "wear and tear". I explained I had only worn this bag a few times, and asked to see the back of the bag the sales assistant wore every day in the shop. Hers was perfect. I was then advised that they would send the bag to the repair centre at a cost of $150 to me. I was gobsmacked. After some discussion which involved me pointing out that I had spent a serious amount of money on a bag of what seems to be crap quality and that charging me for them to just look at it was not really an option. They waved the fee. So now I am back in New Zealand without the bag. I am waiting to hear what they will do, i.e. re colour the bag which won't fix anything. There may be a cost to me involved for them to fix it. I wonder what the guarantee on their bags actually means? Apparently it will take around 6 to 8 weeks until they are able to advise me on what they are willing (or not) to do. I think this has been my last Chanel purchase

      Check out his review of a new caviar wallet! He had to scrape off SO much plastic in order to get to the leather. And you're right, unlike more affordable luxury brands like YSL that will press leather into a texture, Chanel is just coating leather in plastic and paint to give the caviar effect

      A lot of the 22k caviar flap bags on the market have this same issue. I really wanted the brown/beige one but I missed that season, so I’ve been following all the 22k flaps on FASHIONPHILE. Most, if not 100%, of the ones FASHIONPHILE had up for sale in the past couple of months had peeling leather either on the back pocket or at the bottom of the bag, or both. Mind you this is a very recent season and all of the bags I saw were otherwise pretty pristine. I suspect that batch of leather was subpar and many people wanted to sell their bags after realizing that.

    To be honest, because of the recent massive price increase by Chanel, we started to look for alternatives on similar price range. However, the problem I have is, I love Hermes but the styles and functionality of BKC are very limited. They are too heavy, except C. But the straps on C are flopping around when you put the bag on the table is so in the way. They are all too structured to style for evening wear. Also, one has to forever worry about damaging them. Chanel styles are extremely easy to match, day and evening, timeless, easy to use. The leather quality depends on the year it was made. So, I would really suggest check the bag you are buying carefully. All my Chanel bags are very well made, no problem at all. I have been to Chanel recently, again some of the bags are not well made, but some are very well made. To me, styling and versatility are more important than leather quality, because I don’t just use one bag, I change to match. The quality needs to be acceptable. I can’t be bothered to carry a few heavy structured bags plus evening bags when I need to travel a few days away. Normally 2 Chanel bags will do just fine for all occasions.

    After buying a classic Chanel flap bag at the boutique for a huge sum of money with the recent increase in price, I decided I would never buy a real Chanel bag again, I would rather buy a fake Chanel made of good leather. I've got a few Chanel travel line totes in different colours and I was shocked to discover some straps were actually PU not leather.
    Apparently they are still authentic. Shocked at the flimsy construction the inside is actually cardboard! Plus a layer of foam which has disintegrated. This turned into a rust coloured powder. Apparently this is well known to bag renovators, as a particular curse. I'm shocked that those bags were originally US$1600 at least. Unreal.
    I'm fixing them because they are light and excellent for travel.

    Hi Jessie, thanks for covering this. I saw the video also and was quite shocked. I don't expect everything to be top grade and perfect for Chanel but indeed it makes me wonder how much of their modern day bags have been using PU in order to keep improving the profit margins. I think ppl are moving more towards authenticity and real things as social media has made ppl tired of seeing things that are not as authentic feeling. After years of over consumption and a bad economy some ppl may be looking to buy fewer items and higher quality. can't speak for other ppl but I have fatigue at just how much is produced and probably wasted - esp luxury items...they are supposed to be high quality and built to last - but Chanel is probably producing so many seasons I feel they are closer to a Zara and no longer as luxurious to me. Thanks for the chat.

    I wonder if the factories producing for luxury brands are lying to them about the materials being used, and if the luxury brands are being willfully ignorant of it. If a “luxury” item is made in China, then *absolutely* people are being lied to about the materials/manufacturing process. I would just assume the worst of any item that says it’s made of just “black leather” or whatever.

I will say that they are not the best quality and they do “wear and tear” very quickly so I know that now and I don’t think I will be buying another Chanel any time soon. Maybe I will buy a fake one since they seam to be the same level of quality. My super wealthy friend showed up an an event with this gorgeous Chanel bag and I could not keep my eyes off it -// later that night she admitted it was a “replica”. Well it fooled me !!! And made me think maybe I might / could be/ maybe persuaded to carry a “replica”

  • @kiwimike2330
    @kiwimike2330 Рік тому +4

    Of course one advantage of PU on the inside is if you spill liquids or other matter on the inside they won’t soak through the bag as quickly or at all, giving you time to clean or dry it before potentially ruining it. Another is that it won’t colour transfer onto any items stored in the bag. A lot of the interior leathers are so heavily PU costed the may as well be PU anyway. Different materials are used in the construction of bags because their properties are better suited to the use case.

    If their using fake leather, I don’t think that’s a bad thing but they certainly need to drop those prices cause isn’t that part of what your paying for other than the name is the so called real delicate lambskin leather, I think most luxury brand these days are a ripoff and your not getting very good quality anymore for the price yet they continuously keep raising the prices and its just not worth it, plus that’s not point or why people really purchase chanel, if they say the bag is made of the best materials including real leather then that’s wth I want, im not paying 10k+ for no damn name I’m also paying for the quality you say it is and if your giving false information on what quality and material the bag really is then that’s misleading and scamming people and I’d be pissed the hell off if I pad 10k+ and got something completely different from what they say it is, I have to question people too who make all these excuses for them knowing they paid all that money for a sham product, like people are weird when it comes to luxury will pay so much money for bags less quality than a few hundred dollars but then act like their nag is better cause it’s a more prominent brand, like no your just a sucker who wants to be that girl/guy carrying a bag with big luxury brand name with the lesser quality than a coach bag

If you want a good leather bag, you can get a very good one from other brands or a local artisan leather bag store for a fraction of the Chanel price. We buy Chanel bags for its name, history and heritage. So leather or not (unless there is a false representation by Chanel) is not important.

      Really!? I had no idea! I know what you mean..I think it is important that we find out the truth so hopefully in the future brands will pick up their game...It's unlikely because they can make more money by using cheaper materials.

      I am confused why you say that inexpensive materials were used for Asan market? For those who know banking and real history, knows that the real wealth is in Asia, and not in America or Europe! The so called richest forbes in the world, would be as doorman status, in the real dynasty Asian wealth.

      @@giedrebey5444 - this was a specific marketing initiative in the 1990s/early aughts I read about when I was trying to figure out why a canvas Celine bag I bought from a Japanese seller was not marked as being made in Italy. It was also very cheaply made. Vestiaire confirmed it as authentic. Fortunately, I had bought from a professional seller and was able to return it.

    they cannot sell pigskin due to certain religions, I mean they can technically sell it but people may not buy it. However, Hermes pigskin is rare and sought-after. I think legally they have to say which animal it is?

      @asunbeam5479 Рік тому +2

      I wonder if that's why Gucci isn't saying it! pig skin is actually very durable, but brands should be upfront about what kind of leather they are using. In the US they do not have to legally say which animal, they can even say "genuine leather" or "real leather" LOL! like that says much

    I don't understand why people still support Chanel. Their bags are garbage these days, their prices are insane, and they treat their employees like crap. I think Chanel bags are boring, but if I wanted the look I'd honestly buy a fake, because I'd probably be getting better quailty for a much lower price.
    I also heard this Tanner guy has some deal going on with Coach, but I'm not sure if that's true.
