Straight from the tap water can be bad for 2 reasons 1) water temperature should be close enough to the one already in the tank 2) most tap waters have too much chlorine that can kill fish and other living stuff also premixing products for Ph and chlorine is safer Some resistant fish can handle almost everything
Well you can touch the water. Fish can handle slight temp change just not too hot! And conditioner works instantly too its the bacteria starter that needs to set up for a day in a bucket
Ours is non-chlorinated well water from the tap. We do a 2 minute cold water tap flush (to eliminate copper leached from the pipes which is deadly to invertebrates), fill a container from the cold tap only & add a conditioner for any possible heavy metals. Then the container is set aside for at least 24 hours to equalize the temperature to the same as the unheated aquarium. Then, because the well water is too hard, we mix 1 part well water to 2 parts distilled water. Never had a problem using tap water by following these steps.
Wouldn't changing out that much water at one time put the fish at risk? I thought you could only do 15% and replace with conditioned water.. not just refill from the sink. What am I missing?
My tank was not as green as yours but is about as green as your final result, but still not clear after 3 days after my water change. Should I do another water change? Thanks for the video!
How do you take out so much water and not kill your fishes? Do you add water conditioner after or before you add the new tap water? Also do you adjust the water temp from the faucet? I was told not to use hot water from the tap because it contains copper. Anyone with information pls help me understand
I think your UV sterilizer is must have the internal light bulb burnt out, because it should be able to control green water in that tank. They’re also not meant to operate continuously because of the high failure rate of the UVC lamps used.
Well, I was not expecting a fish tank video on this channel, but I love it! My husband changed to a bigger tank recently, and now we have brown algae, which we never had before. He hasn’t done anything about it yet, so I’m trying to find out what to do!
Thanks for the help. My new 20 gallon I’ve had for about 2 months has turn green twice now :( the first time it killed my 3 year old beta, and 3 other fish I had. So I cleaned everything. The rocks, the decor, all the water and it was good for awhile. Since it looked alright, I got two female betas and two male guppies. I had them for about 5 days and in the 2 days I had them my tank started turning green and foggy again. I didn’t know what killed my other fish before. I just assumed my beta died because I added fish and those fish died because I changed the water. Anyway, all my new fish died last night except for one of my guppies. I had switched them to a smaller, non cloudy tank and it was working to help them, but I guess it only helped for a few hours. I guess whatever’s causing the cloudiness kills fish
I’m pretty sure the cloudiness is a bloom of bacteria but not the Good kind. Since u washed ur decor tht means no beneficial were present so they probably died to some sort of ammonia spike or nitrite
Thanks for the video! I do have a quick question, I have hard water so I need to treat the water before I put it back into the tank with my fish. What would you suggest for that? I wish I could use the python thing but I don’t think I’ll be able too. And how much (if any) of the old water did you leave in the tank?
@@jenniferbeasley9626 Even though I didn’t get an answer, I did figure out the answer that worked for me. I kept between 1/4-1/3 of the old water. I didn’t let it get so gross that keeping that much was a problem, and I also was able too get water purifying drops. Plus I didn’t want to shock my fish. I used a thermometer to make sure the water was as close as possible too the target temp of my fish tank, filled multiple 1 gallon containers, followed the instructions on the back of the bottle of the water purifying treatment and that was it really. I did let the water sit in the tank and get to a steady and proper temperature because I found that no matter what I did to prepare, the temp was always off when I first dump the new water back into it. Then once everything was done and temp was back up I would take the bowl I keep my fish in and submerged it slowly into the mostly filled tank so they could swim out on their own and be better acclimated. I will also note that the water the fish are in when I take them out, remain in the old water so just bear that in mind when you are estimating that 1/3-1/4 of the old water that’s left behind. The purifying drops worked great and I believe it was 10 drops:1 gallon on water. But every brand will be different I’m sure. I also stirred up the gravel at the bottom of the tank to shake up all the nasty debris and poop and everything else that hides in the rocks so that when I changed the water, I wasn’t just leaving the worst of it behind. I waited too clean the gravel at the bottom of the tank with a pump until I took half the water out at least. It seemed to make a big difference since so much of the debris was taken out when I was dumping half the old water. By the time I was done with that, a lot of the debris sunk back down to the bottom again and then I would be able too see the target areas that needed a more thorough cleaning with the pump. I hope that helps! Good luck! 🐠🫧🐡🪸
Those UV Sterilisers suffer from 2 issues, the light output drops over time and scale builds up on the quartz glass tube inside. The lamp will need replacing probably every 2 years and the glass tube will need descaling.
Great video! Gotta get me one of those Python no-spill kits! (Hey, a little tip on your teleporting😄. Next time snap your finger at the end of the first take (Wed.). Don't snap it on second part (Fri.) Maybe you've since figured that out.) 7:13
I don't really like those Python hoses. When you fill your tank you are just filling it with tap water from the sink which is generally pretty bad and has a lot of chlorine in it. I only fill my aquariums with RO water from the local water and ice shop and pre treat it with PH balancer and a small amount of aquarium salt. I love the idea of evacuating water with those though but filling with it is a no for me. Can really stress out the fish even if you use a dechlorinator after wards and the PH and hardness is usually way off. I would love to set up an RO auto top off system that I can use to fill the tanks with as well though. that would be ideal.
Another site said to keep your lights off for a few days to even a week to kill the algae? That's what I'm doing? I had just changed my filter and did a half water change than the next day it was green again? I don't want to add chemicals. So I hope this works?
I picked up a bottle of Seachem Flourish and let me tell you... It works!!! It worked a bit too good for me tho.. 2 days after dosing, my tank looked like green Kool-Aid! Plants are thriving tho, silver lining right?
Thank you very much you have explained it perfect why I have green water. Ithink its light and over feeding then as I've cleaned it last week and water green. It's a work tank I think alot of feeds is going on. Thank you.
Ive done everything except chemicals and UV... I think the culprit was too much light & I also did overfeed accidently one morning, but that was over a week ago-that was when the green explosion occurred...since then, under feeding and filter cleanings, and several water changes (not extreme changes, maybe 20% changes) ...no improvement, so I'm now blanketing my tank and generally keeping it much more dark, to see if that helps. It's frustrating. Test strips indicate NO3 a little high. I'd rather not have to purchase an $80 UV filter. There are cheaper ones online, but reviewers say they can kill fish due to electric shock, because they are cheaply made, so I'm NOT doing that!
hello sir i have a vertical standing tank with dimension of( L=25" w=14" H=48" all side mention in inch) it is 290litre tank i would like to hear which filter should i use for my tank it is very difficult to clean it here and there so do suggest a filter for vertical aquarium tank I m really tired cleaning and maintaining the tank
I just did my first water change since I got a new canister. It was perfect crystal clear and bam! When I changed out my water and washed the filters n what not it turned green on the third day smh.
Thanks for the vid bro. I really don't agree with the lazy water change tool though. No chlorine removal, so it's killing your beneficial bacteria every water change (which then renders the filtration useless to fight against the real causes of the algae), and there's also no way of regulating the temperature straight from the tap like that. Sure it's convenient for you, but it's really not good for your tank or it's inhabitants. Best of not being lazy and properly preparing the water you add. Great tool for helping with draining the water during changes though. Cheers.
That's not true, just add the water conditioner (Seachem Prime is great) in the amount you'd normally add for the full tank AS THE PYTHON FILLS the tank. It'll clear the chlorine. Been doing this for years, never crashed my cycle, nor lost a fish. Also you don't need to turn the filter right away while you fill the tank, you can wait for the tank to be filled (and water conditioned) to turn it in so the newly added water doesnt hit it before its conditioned.
@@BruceBarrera do you mean fill the whole tank with the filter off BEFORE adding the conditioner? Doesn’t that put your fish in unconditioned water for awhile? Will it hurt them? Also, how do you control the temperature when it’s straight from the tap? Fish are so complicated!
@@ltraina3353 no, what i meant is as the python fills the tank, just add the Prime in the correct amount for the full tank. Then when the tank is full or almost full, turn on the filter. Temperature, the way I do is to use a food termometer (cheap one, you can buy in any depto store) under the tap water till I get the temperature I want BEFORE sending that water thru the Python. Fish is not complicated if you have the knowledge and the right tools! Just ask, community always help (and I'm paying it forward for so much help i got in the past). Good luck!
We change 40% of the water on our 20 gallon tank that only has 2 fancy goldfish 6" and the water is only good for 2 weeks. We clean and change the filter packet as well. Is it normal to have to scrub your glass and clean a tank every two weeks, and the filter is already bad after one week. Can it be the lighting? My daughter has a multi spectrum light strip and it is set to white light. If anyone can reply, that would help. I'm about to get rid of the fish as it's way too much work cleaning and refilling every other week. Thanks.
I’m having too much trouble with green water. I brought a uv light not working. I’ve watched many videos still confused. Had my water tested it’s ok. I don’t have fish now trying to get the tank ready. Do I need to take everything out snd start over. Help I’ve hag freshwater fish for years now I’m thinking about giving out
Good video, informative in layman terms much appreciated. I'm curious about one thing though. Did you just fill straight off the tap and then add your tap water conditioner straight to the tank after the fill? I usually try and bubble off chlorine from the tap for a couple hours, stress TRY! LOL
Good insightful video man, I’m gonna tell the fam to turn the bright led lights at 10pm. I keep struggling getting rid of this damn algae despite water changes. The h2o clarifier isn’t doing nun, do you think a UV thing will help?
the UV thing will defiantly help, the one i show is vastly undersized for the tank its in so its more of a passive measure trying to kill anything that starts to form, but if my parameters get out of hand its not large enough to do anything about it. however if you size it right they work wonders and i have never had clearer water, i have people look at my tank all the time and are like WOW i have never seen water so clear. What i would try if i was you -Shut lights off when your not viewing the tank, i have mine on a outlet wired to a switch so at night or when gone i flip the switch and no light. -if you are close to a window move to a darker area if possible, if not close the blinds when possible to reduce sunlight getting to tank -if you can get a UV filter, a properly sized on will kill any and all algae floating in the water column, honestly in my opinion if you have a good UV filter thats sized for the tank your pretty much good to go. -make sure not to over feed the fish, un eating food promotes green water.
Major Hardware alright I shall invest on a UV sterilizer, I hope I don’t have to spend anymore money after this lol fishtanks can be more than you think. Anyways thanks for the fast response!
2 years late, but even the smallest green killing machine should keep a 55 clear. The uv bulb probably burned out. You can get replacement bulbs for them.
Well... I left a bottle of water on a windowsill for about a month. I wanted to see what would happen😅 Today I looked at it and... it was green. At first I thought somebody just added green ink or something🤦🏽♀️ Searched it up and threw it away😬
my fish are still good, i have had the issue in the past when i did a major water change and a filter cleaning at the same time it did a number on the fish i had years ago. so if you do a major water change keep the water temp consistent and do not clean your filter at the same time so you dont remove all the good bacteria from your system causing your fish to die, i do water changes weekly so my fish are use to the parameters of my water so its not a big deal to do large water changes as long as i keep the temp consistent and keep my cycled filter media untouched. also im not a fish expert just a hobbyist so i can only say what i have experienced in the past if you want a good fish channel i subscribe to the king of DIY he has a great aquarium channel.
Major Hardware thank you so much! I also love to watch his channel lol. I hope i’d have my aquarium water much more cleaner after i do my water change!
i hope as well green water is the worse, one thing i got that helped me be more consistent in my water changes is that python no spill and fill, it makes it so much easier and when things are easy i do them more often LOL i would recommend getting one if possible.
It's safer if you do this way with established water. Just go to your most trust pet store and asked them if they can give you established water. The pet shop near my home they does that for customers with fish already in the tank. I does that to mine. I emptied my 29 gallon tank like 90% then fill it up via my other fish tank (90 gallons). Really easy.
But you filled the tank from the regular water without treating the water for chlorine first? I have goldfish. I have been told that I need to treat the water for at least 24H before adding it to the tank
If you have heavenly chlorinated water then maybe my water comes from a city well and I use sine standard water treatment always have and never had any problem
@@MajorHardware got you, ok, yes we have city water. thank for the quick reply. That was a great video, very good info.. I was really scared about the water of my tank getting green. Is my first time having goldfish in a aquarium. Thanks for the help.
Cute doggie. And I've used that type of siphon before its great! I used to work at petsmart and I recommend more plants! Weekly changes with conditioner and bacteria, less light and feeding once per day. Turn off filter when feeding so the fish will eat the food before it filters out or falls into a current. Less fish too. More fish is more poop
For peaceful fish... I would go with Bristolnose Pleco they are best one. If you have aggressive fish then get common pleco. If you have extreme aggressive fish then get Rhino Pleco (hard to find it anywhere). For eating Hair algae I would go with Green Scat. I have it. cute fish lol.
I put took out the fake wood k had in my tank and put in spider wood. Now I have green water! My to cats seem to love it. I haven't done a massive water change because they don't seem to love that. 😬
Hey so i have a question so I had a ich problem in my tank so all my fishes are completely gone. for a month now it’s been since i treated the tank nothing is in it. I have not change the water and i seen brown algae was growing and it vanish i’m trying to understand my tank before i go on and invest in 300 dollars worth of fish
My husband changed to a larger tank recently and we have a brown algae that is just getting worse. We never had that problem before. He hasn’t done anything about it yet. I’m going to watch that channel he recommended, to learn more, hopefully.
When i had my tanks (late 70's, and then again the 90's), the only sure-fire way to fix this was a Diatom filter. Now, most people with a 30G tank won't be spending the coin on a Diatom filter, but they're so amazing. With a 240G, 195G, and 125G tank (plus a 70G and 30G for feeder Goldfish), it was so easy.. throw on the Diatom, let it run for 6-8 hours, and voila .... crystal clear water! I have to agree with the others about using Python water-changers.. they work ok for cleaning/emptying, but for refilling.. not so good... due to the Chlorine in city tap water. My solution for my big tanks was a submersible sump pump sitting in a ~35 gallon rigid-plastic garbage can. I used 1/2"id. hoses to syphon, and pick up the shit from the bottom, which ran into the can/drum. Once full, i would run the sump pump til it emptied the can, then let it refill.. repeat til done. For refill, i ran water from the taps into the drum, always monitoring temps, until full. Add "Aquarisol" (Chlorine remover/water conditoner), then pump water back into tank... repeat til done. I'd had algal blooms where changing 100% of the water (a chore on the 240) still didn't solve the problem, it would be green again in 2 days. These tanks were in a dark basement with no light, so it wasn't from windows or anything, and i had copious amounts of filtration.. yet it still happened occasionally.
I had an algae bloom but I did water changes but they didnt do anything, cleaning water wise, which led to my golden sucking loach to get pop eye but i did a 100% today and it's amazing to watch my fish again 😊
use a bit of the algae kill/eliminator, but just a fraction of whats recommended. Its very harsh but if you are constantly changing the water and adding a fraction of the chemical it'll work.
You can do this if you are able to get 80% established water from your other tank or your favorite pet shore. Normally they do this for free if you have buckets.
I have 3 fish tanks. Two are perfectly clear. I had special gravels that's very healthy for my fish. Very rare and I can't remember the name of brand that are no longer in market. My 3rd tank is 5 months old. Had same problem as you guys. The water never got clear! Been trying to figure out what went wrong. I wish I have same gravels from my other tanks. I asked around they have no idea what I was talking about. They thought all gravels are the same. I am still trying to find a solution to stop the green water in this tank. I have baby Oscar with large Pleco.
@@scottvzing959 Same here! I have 3 tanks, never had anything like this before. Ive had fish tanks for the past 6 years now, and I regularly maintain them. All of a sudden, my 75 gallon tank turned greenish, I replaced 80% of my water with treated water, 1 day later it came back. Its now day 2 and its really green now! I checked my other tanks that I also added new water to and they are crystal clear. I have 2 Mumbai Cichlids and 1 Electric Blue Cichlid along with a large Pleco. I use a sand substrate and havent had this issue in the roughly 4 months Ive had this tank. Cant figure out whats happening? Found this video on youtube and guessing its maybe the LED lights I use? My tank gets some sunlight from about 11:30am until about 2:30pm, I feed once a day about enough that they can eat for about 2 minutes. I dont think Im overfeeding. Im trying to figure this out. Did your situation improve? If so, what did you do?
Jason Pargeon I removed my led light top and bought a different led light that’s not bright as that old led light. The tank got better and now is crystal clear! This is strange.
ALGAEFIX from API is really effective. Word of advice: don't use the recommended setting in the label. Always use a fraction. Err on the safe side. Most ppl overestimate their water volume, a 90 gal tank for instance, full of substrate, fish, decor and whatnot DOES NOT hold 90 gallons of water, much less and these chemicals are pretty harsh on the fish. Do not use either if your tank contains shrimp, invertebrates in general or scaleless fish like some catfishes. Most important, DO NOT USE if the tank contains fry. They can't stand those algae-killing chemicals. To the video poster, feel free to add some of this info to your video description, I think will help clear up the questions of some of your viewers!
Damn here in the U.K. they wont even sell you fish if you’ve only just filled your tank up via a tap they make you wait 7 days as tap water has a lot of chemicals in it that are harmful to your fish, they say it literally burns your fishes skin. Also you should do a 20% water change each week. They sell chemicals such as Tap Safe to add to your tap water which will take out the harmful chemicals after a couple days.

Good luck!

How did you treat the water if you are pulling straight from the tap? I have African dwarf frogs and I can’t seem to rid myself of the green water
Those UV Sterilisers suffer from 2 issues, the light output drops over time and scale builds up on the quartz glass tube inside. The lamp will need replacing probably every 2 years and the glass tube will need descaling.
I usually let the quart tubes sit in vinegar over night and scales will easily fall off. Cheers
Super informative. Had this issue today. Decided to do a water change on my 55, picked up some chemicals though.
We’re the chemicals fine for the fish
@@joshuahernandez5883 I didn't have any issues personally, but I know some people have
What did you put in your water ?
Did you just add water conditioner to the tank as you filled it from the tap?
Thank you very much you have explained it perfect why I have green water.
Ithink its light and over feeding then as I've cleaned it last week and water green.
It's a work tank I think alot of feeds is going on.
Thank you.
i try this not working after 2 days water becoming green again
Ive done everything except chemicals and UV... I think the culprit was too much light & I also did overfeed accidently one morning, but that was over a week ago-that was when the green explosion occurred...since then, under feeding and filter cleanings, and several water changes (not extreme changes, maybe 20% changes) ...no improvement, so I'm now blanketing my tank and generally keeping it much more dark, to see if that helps. It's frustrating. Test strips indicate NO3 a little high. I'd rather not have to purchase an $80 UV filter. There are cheaper ones online, but reviewers say they can kill fish due to electric shock, because they are cheaply made, so I'm NOT doing that!
hello sir
i have a vertical standing tank with dimension of( L=25" w=14" H=48" all side mention in inch) it is 290litre tank
i would like to hear which filter should i use for my tank it is very difficult to clean it here and there
so do suggest a filter for vertical aquarium tank
I m really tired cleaning and maintaining the tank
I just did my first water change since I got a new canister. It was perfect crystal clear and bam! When I changed out my water and washed the filters n what not it turned green on the third day smh.
washing the filter is what does it, what i do now is rinse them in there own water this gets the large partials off them but doesnt kill the bacteria.
Thanks.
put light on a timer. over feeding? live plants and potho plant just roots in water. gets the nitrates out
Where can I get the sipon and attachment for the faucet please.Thank you
I’m having too much trouble with green water.
LOL
My water looks like that a week later after I’ve done 100% water change and it’s been going on for months I do not know what to do next
What i would try if i was you
-Shut lights off when your not viewing the tank, i have mine on a outlet wired to a switch so at night or when gone i flip the switch and no light.
-if you are close to a window move to a darker area if possible, if not close the blinds when possible to reduce sunlight getting to tank
-if you can get a UV filter, a properly sized on will kill any and all algae floating in the water column, honestly in my opinion if you have a good UV filter thats sized for the tank your pretty much good to go.
-make sure not to over feed the fish, un eating food promotes green water.
Major Hardware alright I shall invest on a UV sterilizer, I hope I don’t have to spend anymore money after this lol fishtanks can be more than you think. Anyways thanks for the fast response!
@@TheSantos173 just make sure its sized appropriately and you will not be disappointed with the results.
Try using purigen bag
@@moneymansqweez2174 what is a purigen bag?
I literally do 30% water change weekly and have had my tank for months and just now got this nasty water
2 years late, but even the smallest green killing machine should keep a 55 clear. The uv bulb probably burned out. You can get replacement bulbs for them.
I did a big water change and my tank still looks like i never touched it. ughhhhhh
Well... I left a bottle of water on a windowsill for about a month. I wanted to see what would happen😅 Today I looked at it and... it was green. At first I thought somebody just added green ink or something🤦🏽♀️ Searched it up and threw it away😬
That camera pan to the tank was epic. Haha.
some things you just cant teach :-)
Any chance you have a video of your aquarium stand and topper build?
hey!! nice job! but could that cause water shock to fish? i also want to do a major water change but im afraid that my fish would get water shocked
my fish are still good, i have had the issue in the past when i did a major water change and a filter cleaning at the same time it did a number on the fish i had years ago. so if you do a major water change keep the water temp consistent and do not clean your filter at the same time so you dont remove all the good bacteria from your system causing your fish to die, i do water changes weekly so my fish are use to the parameters of my water so its not a big deal to do large water changes as long as i keep the temp consistent and keep my cycled filter media untouched.
also im not a fish expert just a hobbyist so i can only say what i have experienced in the past if you want a good fish channel i subscribe to the king of DIY he has a great aquarium channel.
You can't just add tap water to your tank without addressing Chlorine, Chemical Algae treatments often don't work with living plants
Which algae eater eat green algae and hair algae
I have not change the water and i seen brown algae was growing and it vanish i’m trying to understand my tank before i go on and invest in 300 dollars worth of fish
the reason i have not changed the water was to let the proper chemicals blossom because my test strip said i was basically taking to much of it out
My husband changed to a larger tank recently and we have a brown algae that is just getting worse. We never had that problem before. He hasn’t done anything about it yet.
I’m going to watch that channel he recommended, to learn more, hopefully.
im sure your UV steriuliser is broken, as I had pea soup water and after using a small UV sterliser the tank was crystal clear in 3 days.
Did u ever get rid of the bloom?

I have been changing my water every second day and between that cleaning my filters and it's still green. I only have 4 fish in the tank
use a bit of the algae kill/eliminator, but just a fraction of whats recommended. Its very harsh but if you are constantly changing the water and adding a fraction of the chemical it'll work.
Prob too frequent water changes
That’ll be hard on the fish
Could I use this phytoplankton to feed my salt water fish and inverts

You took out like 80 percent of the water. Is that safe for the fish? I have green water and I just want to do good by my fish

Just don't clean the filter media
You can do this if you are able to get 80% established water from your other tank or your favorite pet shore. Normally they do this for free if you have buckets.
Does this work with freshwater
My water went from white to green, been like this for months and idk why, never had a water problem for the last 8 years this 55gal has been set up
SAME! How to get rid of it?
Found this video on youtube and
guessing its maybe the LED lights I use? My tank gets some sunlight from about 11:30am until about 2:30pm, I feed once a day about enough that they can eat for
about 2 minutes. I dont think Im overfeeding. Im trying to figure this out. Did your situation improve? If so, what did you do?
Jason Pargeon I removed my led light top and bought a different led light that’s not bright as that old led light. The tank got better and now is crystal clear! This is strange.
Hulk smash aquarium 😄, good info 👍
Nothing works for me ..It’s still so much greeny..Helpppp
EXACTLY WHAT IVE BEEN DEALING WITH
Too much of water chenging is not good for fish.., and not good for aquarium ecosystem..as it will kill beneficial bacteria...
wrong, beneficial bacteria is not in the water
I just use the blackout technique to get rid of those dem algae
and Peroxide dosing.
How do you do it? How long do you blackout the aquarium?
Your tank is really cool dude
Thanks. This was very helpful!
Snails re the best dude
Thanks for the video, you did not elaborate on the chemicals used.
Hi what’s the name of the UV filter you are using. Thank you.
It’s not nitrates or phosphate, it’s iron... high light causes iron to react and become more bioavailable...

Damn here in the U.K. they wont even sell you fish if you’ve only just filled your tank up via a tap they make you wait 7 days as tap water has a lot of chemicals in it that are harmful to your fish, they say it literally burns your fishes skin. Also you should do a 20% water change each week. They sell chemicals such as Tap Safe to add to your tap water which will take out the harmful chemicals after a couple days.
ask them for free established water from them. Just bring buckets and pour them into your tank. Will be ready for fish quick.
