- After Dickel plans another ridiculous scheme, Old Buzz drags out his newest project from his garage, a 1937 Sparton console radio. This radio looks to be in pretty good condition. Buzz shows off his snazzy looking radio, then tests the speaker and power transformer windings to see if it's possible to power it up. What are the odds this radio will work? Join Buzz and come along for some fun. To close out the video, Dickel give a shout-out to his youngest fan!

Oh now that one is going to be a beauty. Eager to see how that band switch/push button thing works. Never have seen anything like that one before. Good job Buzz another good project.
thanks Andy, cheers
Looks like you have a great radio there Buzz. Good luck with the restoration. Can’t wait for the next episode.
Hello Lynton..I watched the secret life of the vacuum cleaner...thanks, Buzz
Hi Buzz. Hope you enjoyed it. Look out for the one on the video recorder, excellent viewing.
Take care
Lynton
Looking forward to Part 2! Very COOL ol' radio.
Its up tonight
That really is a nice old radio Buzz. You got off to a shaky start but you got it working already now its just fix up and clean up to get it working well. Great video.
well, when Buzz works on a radio, anything can and probably will happen! Stay tuned,
That's one gorgeous radio buzz totally awesome I love it
It sure is!
A gorgeous dial. At first I was thinking this series maybe as long as John from Arkansas's thunderbird series. Which would be great since its a radio :-). Sitting on the edge of my seat for the followup episodes.
👍👍👍
Well Buzz, this should be a real beauty when you finish it. Hope all is well my friend. Take care and stay safe.
thanks for watching carl, cheers
I have that exact radio and likewise found it on craigslist and it's a great performer. Whats unique about that radio is that uses an afc circuit (the lower left control is the afc on/off switch) and one of the cans on top of the chassis is the afc alignment coil. Try not to adjust it as the alignment is touchy. Have fun and enjoy!
Thanks for the info!🌝
Really cool radio Buzz.
it is indeed!
Hey Buzz I just scored a Sparton Radio model 1068 Just like yours today from Roseburg so I am watching this again for pointers.....
That's great...I love mine!
Hi buzz. Has always I enjoyed, liked, shared. All my best buddy.
You rock!👍👍
This is gonna be a lovely series to follow Buzz. That band switch will need some closer scrutiny. It is in good hands and that's what counts. I expect nothing but a positive outcome on this. The speaker sounds like it has good response. I suggest you protect it before moving any further. LOL. Oh, and welcome to the world of radio restore Isabella.
wasnt she a cutie?
@@Buzz1151 It's so neat that such a young person is interested in these old gems. At least we know of one more preservationist from the next generation.
Always amazed when you get these old radios working without much effort or parts replacement.
must be lucky, haha
The radio sounds great Buzz! Great job getting it working. I love that dial face. This will be a beautiful piece when you get it done.
✔✔✔👍
Thanks Buzz. I like seeing the heavy equipment substituting knobs.
We had an old tractor on the farm that had a pair of vise grips instead of a steering wheel.
haha, thanks😊
Cool project Buzz - can't wait to see the rest of the series. Keep your fingers and screwdrivers away from that virgin speaker. I have seen what you have done to them in the past. Also, better put that dial face in another room away from you and yours tools for the time being. Regards, Bill.
haha, I will try!!😜
Nice resurrection, Buzz! I used to have a Sparton 1068, but the dial glass was already broken when I got it. Nice radio!
It’s a beautiful dial, and you were smart to take it out. Just don’t let Dickel get ahold of it!
its the best dial I have ever owned, that's for sure! lets hope for the best
Fabulous. I always loved the cobalt blue trim and glass work of the Spartans. Sounds great too, when a radio sounded like a radio concert hall in those old uprights. Looking forward to Part 2.
Glad you enjoyed part 1, looking forward to fixing that band switch! 😜😜
Holy Horseshoes! Your assumption of the Sparton name reminds me of Nabisco which is short for National Biscuit Company. :) That radio certainly looks heavy duty alright!
haha, pure genius huh?
You have an beauty on your hands. Can not wait to see the end of this. WOW !
thanks james...😁
That’s a nice radio Buzz, wasn’t a cheap one when new
imagine a cheapskate with an expensive radio..omg haha
Radiomuseum.org says $124.95 in 1937
Thank you for your time, talent, and effort.
I appreciate that Mr Ed

That's a lovely set Buzz. Looking forward to the restore. It should sound fantastic!
Cheers, John
it has pizazz, that's for sure, Buzz
Such a nice old radio and in really great condition.
Great sound as well
I love it 😍
That ending was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. We needed that. Thank you Buzz! Good luck with this resto... and most importantly, have fun :)
glad you liked it, Cheers 😷
Wow, great radio (love the dial) and video presentation as always, thanks Buzz. I'm really pulling' for that pristine speaker to make it back into the restored cabinet intact
so am I haha😊
Buzz.
Well...I've certainly been entertained. Great job, turkey-bird. I have a place in my heart for Sparton radios as one of my first restorations was a Sparton. They're solid and good sounding units. Drive on!
Regards,
John
I love dem Sparton radios too..I think i'll drag out this video to 100 episodes, just like you! haha🤣
Nice start to what I expect to be a grand restoration. Don't forget to paint the transformer black and red, and all the IF cans gold! I thought Dickle's rendition of the Godzilla song was spot on, and something sorely needed in the films (sarcasm - sorry Dickle). I wonder if UA-cam content ID will try and claim it! BTW, Why does Dickle live in such nice digs? If he can afford those splendid rooms, surely he can spring for his own bottle of cheap whiskey! Thanks for the video!
haha, thats fake background, if I showed where he really lives people would feel sorry for him and send him free whiskey!.
also, thanks for the idea of Dickel singing the Godzilla song, although it didn't quite work out hha
@@Buzz1151 I think the main problem with Dickle's otherwise stellar performance (perfect for America's Got Talent) was that he did not sing the song in the traditional Japanese.
Now, in MOTHRA, the two little "doll women" (whom Mothra carried from place to place, and didn't charge extra for carry-on luggage - a courtesy sadly lacking in modern airlines) did sing their "Mothra Song" in the tradition Japanese (not sure which dialect). As I recall from the film, they wound up getting a pretty lucrative night club gig singing that song, and it became an instant hit among 10-year olds in 1962. Until Mothra accidentally destroyed Toyko, clumsy giant moth that she was!
It was a simpler time, right?
Keep on trying Dickle, your fan club supports you -- all 3 of us!
Please note: this entire comment is SARCASM!
How sweet it is, Dickle, and away we gooood!
a little traveling music
That looks like a real nice radio, looking forward to the restore.
I would hit that band switch with DEOXIT before taking it all apart.
Enjoy your videos!
I can't afford Deoxit, I''m not rich like you!!...haha, take care Hackbar, oops, I mean oldgoat!!😁
@@Buzz1151 You can afford Dockel's whiskey....LOL
that thing sold for 125 bucks off the floor in 1937. That must have been the Cadillac of radios in its day!
wouldn't it be neat to hear the history of this radio from the horse's mouth? ...I might hire a psychic to tell me, haha
@@Buzz1151 Summon it with gnome charm!
It may be time to call Dickel a dope by the end of this series! haha
It sounded like 👍 ya got content ID matched for the Godzilla movie 🍿, or album 💿. Sort of a bummer, even after the song’s song 🎧 been around for over 50 years. That’s a well built radio 📻. I really like 👍 it, and wished the world 🌎 would come back to building the same. That’s a field coil speaker 🔊. That was before permanent magnet 🧲, speakers 🔊, although a permanent magnet 🧲 speaker 🔊 can work in here. I like 👍 when ya got the drum 🪘 roll, as ya turned the chassis on its side. That was QUALITY, back in the day. That speaker 🔊 looks brand new. Just don’t poke a hole 🕳 in it. That commonly happens with these radios 📻, and it’s very frustrating when it does. Your friend, Jeff.
🍺🍺
Imagine that. You got an 83 year old radio to work without much fuss. I hope I can get up when I'm that age without much fuss!🙏🏻😆👍🏻 Maybe some dirt in that band switch which
you could spray some WD40 in it to get her moving again. Really needs a bath. It sure is dirty.
i will tackle the band switch on part 2
Another beauty Buzz! 👍👍
well, you ain't so bad yourself 😁
You never see Pikachu themed beach towels on John’s UA-cam channel!
Oh yeah, nice radio project Buzz!
nope, and you never will, haha
Nice work!
didn't really do much then plug it in haha, thanks Gordon
That Sperry multimeter seems to have a nice. Quick response.
🍺
@@Buzz1151 Sherry is good too.

Three Positions Two Bands.... HMMMM Bingo!!! The third position is for the PUSHBUTTONS!!!!!!
actually, there are 2 shortwave bands , and 1 broadcast band..😒
Buzz1151 lol :)
Another great video Buzz, and I thank you. This one looks to be a really nice set and should sound great if the speaker cone stays intact. That band switch should be fun. Any way take care and good luck with it.
thanks Gary. cheers!😷
Great video..I wish my radios would work on their first start ups....working on a Philco 40-180 that someone got in to first, I can use some whiskey about now too...thanks Buzz..and Dickel too...
Maybe Dickel can send you some cheap Safeway brand whiskey, haha
@@Buzz1151 ...thanks.but I have my Old No 7
That radio sold new for $125 in 1937 Buzz. When adjusted for inflation that's over $2200 in today's dollarettes. That's why all the iron is still good over 80 years later. Top quality components of the day. Gonna be a beauty when she's done. Stay well. ATB Doug.
I hope so!, thanks Doug, Buzz
Would have been an expensive radio to buy in the day maybe a years wages ,and it been looked after well and plenty of room underneath for servicing .And my wee friend Dickel ,well i like whiskey too .Good one again Buzz look forward to next one.
Maybe you will buy Dickel's Godzilla theme for whiskey, hahaha
That power transformer needs a red stripe and put a nice coat of copper spray paint on those cans. That will get them riled up.
good idea! haha
Everything I have seen of Sparton (Sparks-Withington) was built to extremely high standards. They actually built more sirens than anything else (thank the war for that) and they even built refrigerators with their own horizontal semi-hermetic compressor design.
wish I had a Sparton fridge! 😊
Hi Buzz,
I'm so glad you got this Sparton. You're so lucky to have found the dial glass in perfect condition. I have no idea where you'd find another, unless it was from a scrapped radio. Did you figure out what the lower, three position control was for? I was wrongly guessing it was a tone control.
Hey Isabella, welcome to the hobby. I'm sure your dad could use all the help he can find.
Regards, Tom
I have yet to dig deeper in this radio...perhaps tomorrow my friend, Buzz
Fabulous radio! Take your time with this one, it's worth doing right. Also, what are you using to pipe old music into your radios? Is it a homebrew AM transmitter of some sort? If so I would love to see you show us how you made it!
it a SSTRAN AMT 3000
Very nice radio Buzz... Hard to see but did you have the AC up to 120 when you were testing it ? Thats going to be a beautiful set when done... its totally unmolested... very very cool...
I had it around 100 volts thanks 👍
You checked the heater windings with the tubes plugged in🤔 I agree, the dial is wonderful.
yes I did. thanks for pointing that out! 😮
Yea!! Buzz has posted another therapeutic video. Turned off WCCO...Turned on Buzz. Within 10 minutes my hands stopped shaking and my blood pressure is back in the normal range. I may even skip my 7pm Valium. That old Spartan has the makings of a real beauty...can't wait for the next thrilling episode.
Glad to help your health Karl, ha, regards, Buzz 😷
Interesting looking radio!! Will the cabinet need any work done on it? That speaker looks brand new and I bet will sound awesome in that cabinet!!! Do we have to wait a month before the next video or will you have one sooner than that??
maybe a couple of weeks
BUZZ - DO NOT PUT A HOLE IN THAT SPEAKER! ;)
You HAD to say that didn't you! Jeez! Now he's sure to because he'll be 'extra careful'!
yes sir! 😁
Is that your house behind Dickel at 19:00? It's beautiful!
haha, I got that picture from google.
Cool!!!! Do you seel the radios after restoring?
you want one?
Godzilla song was worth at least a shot of whiskey buzz?!
maybe you're right
16:41 - 16:48 -- It looks like ol' Buzz needs some more lead in his pencil!
😁
call mark at retro radio repair for a replacement dial cover if that plastic is beyond repair. 20 bucks
Hi Zeb...already ordered one, 👍
Did you ever find a live rodent inside a radio?
just turds
Hi Buzz....Try Quality Radio Belts...I think they make them....Take Care-Larry
Thanks for the tip, 😷, Buzz
Thanks Buzz . This is going to be an awesome series! Love the radio! Can’t wait fo the next episode. Same Buzz time, Same Buzz channel!😁
