Ghbdtn! or Привет! if I switch to Russian keyboard. I'm happy that I found you! So friendly, cozy like home, atmosphere! When you said that you like small books, that it's seems cute to you I remembered the last bookshelves rearrangement, which was yesterday's night, and the tiny book of Dubrovskyi by Alexander Pushkin. It amaze you by the design unusual for that old years (that are late 80s): framing of text on pages, even sepia pictures, and a minimalistic book cover. Despite I know you literally a few minutes, I'm sure you would love it! How can anybody not love it!? It's soooo cute! And then you say that you would love to learn Russian... And the portrait of Pushkin on the shelf... When there are so many coinsidents, one says: "Случайности не случайны", what is often true for me. So I'm looking forward to know you better.
Thank you, Carolyn, for the lovely video. Tip for your Van-Gogh-as-as-reader video: not only was he a brilliant painter, he was also a gifted letter writer. In his letters he often comments on the books he’s reading. He also says how much he loves books. By the way, that book about Vincent’s books is great. Greetings from the Netherlands.
I'm SO happy Willow's back! Haha. I found your voice rally peaceful, love the way u express. It's a very interesting haul, full of beautiful editions. Happy birthday! 🎂🎊
The Blue Castle is so wonderful! I've read it three times this year because I loved it so much. Also a huge Dostoevsky fan and have started learning Russian with the goal of reading his novels in the original language.
I love your style and taste; it makes your channel unique from other booktube channels, even when you do well known video types like hauls. It's also nice to see someone appreciating classics so much ^-^ Also, that penguin clothbound Christmas collection is lovely!
Hi Carolyn , I've seen all your Russian lit. Vlogs and really enjoyed them. Just wanted to recommend you a really good channel that talks about Russian classics. Its called Sophia Clef , she's a Russian speaker but her channel is in English. She did an 8 part video all about Ana Karenina , I think you would like it 😊
If you're looking into reading WWII books, I would recommend Maus by Art Spiegelman. It's a 2 part graphic novel detailing the author's father's time during the war in the concentration camps. The unique thing about it is that different types of people are represented as different animals. For example: Jews are represented as mice, Nazis as cats, non- Nazi Germans as pigs, etc. It's an interesting take on the genre and the artwork is nice as well. Also, Willow is so precious!
I know Anne of Green Gables is Lucy's "flagship" and I myself enjoy the books and the original series with Megan Follows very much. But the Blue Castle is my favorite Lucy's book. I read it every year (more than 20 years already), I just finished this year's read about a week ago! Its adorable, funny and a little bit sad at the same time. I wish more people will discover this gem, in my country (Slovakia) almost nobody heard about it, although Anne is megapopular here. Our edition has different name, it was published as "Osudný omyl" (translated back to english "A fateful mistake").
Thank you sooo much for this video. I adore Beatrix Potter and that book has been on my Amazon card for awhile. Now I’m more inspired to purchase it. I love art and own The Art of Beatrix Potter: Sketches, Paintings, and Illustrations. Winnie the Pooh is my favorite bear 🐻. Thank you for sharing that beautiful book….psss… I ordered it today. Could not wait😉
Sooo many wonderful books! I'm not very far through Resurrection yet, but the philosophy in the beginning kind of reminded me of Demian by Hermann Hesse, a book I was kind of obsessed with a couple years ago. I feel like you'd like it!
That is a fine translation of "Quiet Flows the Don", a fascinating look at the Don Cossacks. It will be well worth your time to read it, however long it takes😁. With regard to WW2, "The Light of Days" by Judy Batalion, is both heartbreaking and uplifting telling the story of women fighters of the Jewish Resistance in Poland during the Nazi occupation. It describes the amazing courage and resilience of young women in their late teens and twenties fighting and unfortunately dying for their beliefs. It is mainly centered on a small number of women who survived or left personal accounts.
I've been wanting that Penguin Christmas stories book! The Dostoevsky story they've picked is so grim and awkward and unchristmassy (as you'd imagine from him) 😂 but I've only read The Fir Tree apart from that, would love to hear what you thought of the others, particularly the Calvino, Saki, Chekhov and Dylan Thomas cos they're my boys
L. M. Montgomery is my favorite author & The Blue Castle is probably my favorite of her novels! I read it in almost one sitting but within 24 hours. If I didn't have children I definitely would have been able to read it in one sitting. You'll love it.
I recently found your channel as I was getting back in to annotating books and your lovely video was recommended to me. Oh my heart, the Beatrix Potter book is one of my favorites. My copy is all worn out but I don't care; I have so much love for this book. It really lets you see beyond the author and illustrator she was and truly understand the connection she had with nature - gosh, I'm so happy for you that you get to read it for the very first time! Also, I hope your arm feels better! It made me giggle as I recognize that feeling when leaving a bookshop - happy but also a bit numb in my arm ♡
If you love war stories, I would recommend you my favourite book ever. It's from a hungairan writer's pen, it's Abigail from Magda Szabó. I cannot recommend enough.
So nice seeing that Dostoyevsky is finding a place in your heart. I can anytime suggest his best - The Brothers Karamazov. Let the other books come later when you do prioritize. 😍
There’s a really wholesome film called ‘Miss Potter’ about Beatrix Potter (with Renee Zellweger and Ewan Mcgregor) which I think you’d enjoy!!! Such a wonderful book haul 🧡
I totally related to you when you said you wanted to go into marine biology but you “don’t have a science brain.” I love learning about animal biology, physics and other sciences but everything always goes over my head so I just stick to literature 😂 I hope you had a good birthday and can’t wait to hear your thoughts on all of these wonderful books!
I loved this video so much ! I would definitely read Vincent Van Gogh And The Writers Who Influenced him first, it just sounds so fascinating! I've just finished reading Letters To Father Christmas by J.R.R Tolkein and it was beautiful! I'm currently reading , The Life And Adventures Of Santa Claus by L. Frank Baum and I would thoroughly recommend it. Now that my university exams are over and I just have work I have more time to read and I'm getting a jump start on my holiday reading. 🙂 Have you read much Tolkein? Can you recommend any of his other books or any holiday reads in general? I 'm always after recommendations.
Hi Carolyn, loved your book haul. The winnie the pooh book is gorgeous. I really appreciated the sneaky wuthering heights quote. I'm so curious to know if we grew up with similar animals (snakes?) haha. Also, because your dog's name is willow, I was just wondering, have you ever watched buffy? It's my favorite show. Have a great day!!!
That's a fantastic concept! That of the artist being informed by other forms of art! I would love to know more about van gogh as both artist and reader! Or just abt any other artists too like Monet (if they were readers) :P
I'm so glad that you made an appearance on Willow's channel. Beacause this is Willow's world and she's just that gracious and lets us talk about books on here. How very lovely of her. 😊💖
Is there anything better in all the world than Russian literature? I don’t think there is. I enjoyed this video and put a few on my own wishlist. Thank you!
I’ve been reading Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh and would recommend it to anyone. As well as Shadow by Micheal Morpurgo. 😊 They are quite famous so you might of read them already. If you like books about books then I would also recommend A Library of Lemons by Jo Cotterill.
20:52 i wouldn't say it's a dutch classic as it was written by an american author, it's only based in the netherlands. however it does sound interesting! if you'd ever like to read a classic by a dutch author i'd recommend 'the discovery of heaven' by Harry Mulisch, or, since you enjoy world war II fiction 'the assault' by Harry Mulisch
I know you like art and illustration - if you're interested in botanical illustration too then "Amazing Rare Things" by David Attenborough is great. It discusses a quick history of botanical drawing and has chapters on e.g. da Vinci and Maria Sibylla Merian. The book about Van Gogh looks so fascinating - I really like the idea of your video :)
I went to a wonderful exhibition this year called Van Gogh Alive. It's his paintings that have been digitally remastered and they are all around on the walls floors moving and amongst it is some of his writing, his letters. It was incredibly immersive and moving experience. And it did make me want to read his writing, probably the black penguin classics edition of The Letters of Vincent Van Gogh. What little I can see, your book displays are beautiful.

This is a wonderful video; but honestly, the first 16 seconds are my favorite!
yess silver skates was turned into a movie. It’s set in Russia (Saint Petersburg), so I think you’ll love it!✨
I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU GOT NOTES FROM THE DEAD HOUSE TOO!!! I GOT IT JUST THE OTHER DAY!!!!!!! THIS IS SO EXCITING!!!!!!!!
Just when I thought this channel can't get any better, we got a cute little snoring dog in the background 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🐶🐶🐶
I'm SO happy Willow's back! Haha. I found your voice rally peaceful, love the way u express. It's a very interesting haul, full of beautiful editions. Happy birthday! 🎂🎊

Your videos always makes me feel calm 🥰🥰🥰
I appreciate your good mix of recommendations. I am a first-time viewer and enjoyed this immensely. Thank you.
The Blue Castle is so wonderful! I've read it three times this year because I loved it so much. Also a huge Dostoevsky fan and have started learning Russian with the goal of reading his novels in the original language.

I love the Beatrix Potter book! Such a big fan of Beatrix Potter and her naturalism.
Sooo many wonderful books! I'm not very far through Resurrection yet, but the philosophy in the beginning kind of reminded me of Demian by Hermann Hesse, a book I was kind of obsessed with a couple years ago. I feel like you'd like it!
Aww, The Fir Tree! My mother used to read me that one every year, it's so sad but so good.
The Blue Castle! An all-time favourite!! 😍

Aww Willow is growing so fast 🥺💗
So nice seeing that Dostoyevsky is finding a place in your heart. I can anytime suggest his best - The Brothers Karamazov. Let the other books come later when you do prioritize. 😍
I just love your taste in books, Carolyn
WILLOW IS SO PERFECT AND SO ARE YOU!!!

I think you should read embers from Sándor Márai. It's a hungarian modern classic, but I think you would love it. It's one of my favourite books ☺️✨
I adore the Virago editions! Also, I think the mini series of Silver Skates is not the same as the book? I believe it’s set in Russia? 🤔
The Blue Castle is so good! I just read it this year and it's my favorite book of 2021. I don't think anything will top it for this year.
That's a fantastic concept! That of the artist being informed by other forms of art! I would love to know more about van gogh as both artist and reader! Or just abt any other artists too like Monet (if they were readers) :P

absolutely shocked that there are no pan macmillans in this haul hahaha but glad you liked the everyman's library edition
Yes it would be nice to hear Van Gogh's thoughts on Dickens,a Kempis, and Maupassant.

Wonderful video, I watched it, and now I’m sad it’s over 😢
If only I had a willow to nap on me lap ;/
You make my days so much better when I see you uploaded a video :)))))
Read Blue Castle IMMEDIATELY!!! It is LLM's best book!
I went to a wonderful exhibition this year called Van Gogh Alive.
