I've been doing this for years but I didn't know you could use salt....I always used something acidic like vinegar or lemon juice. Soaking makes digesting nuts so much easier on the tummy. Great video!!!
My nutritionist that I am working with told me that I must always dehydrate all nuts. Thank you for making this video, it was very helpful. I'm glad I found this.
Never dehydrated nuts before but I've been researching and they seem like a very healthy alternative to just buying nuts that are already in a bag, definitely going to give this a try do you have any recommendations on how to do the same thing with walnuts pecans or cashews
Thanks Robin! I have trouble digesting food due to ibs, and I have to soak a lot of foods, but I never dehydrated, so this is good to know. Do I have to store in the fridge/freezer? I normally just use a handful for my morning smoothies. Thanks again! 🙂
I was excited to see this video....my toaster oven has a 'dehydrate' button & I didn't know what to use it for. If I were tdehydrate almonds that way, how would I do it? (would the same 20-24 hours apply)
Hola, Robin. That was an AWESOME demonstration on soak and dehydrate almonds. You really have come a lone way when you cook. I have a couple questions: how long do you make your videos, what's your favorite thing to do at Christmas, and what recipes are you going to make in the next few weeks? Please let me know. See ya next week, Robin. Gracias! Adios! ;-) You totally rock at making ANYTHING Latino.
Robin, I'm going to refrain from making any comments that can be misconstrued in regards to soaking my nuts. Most people wouldn't know this about raw almonds, so I thank you so much for another great and informative video. Thank you so very much for yet another great and informative video and including the link for this dehydrator.
+Thaneii You are welcome Phil. I appreciate your restraint! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and maybe you may even try dehydrating some nuts or even beef jerky. Have a great weekend!
+Rockin Robin's Cooking Mexican Recipes - I've been wanting a dehydrator for a while, but I couldn't justify the cost for something that I would use so little. This video gave me an additional reason to seriously think about buying one. Thanks again. By the way, I'm sending you a PM, so please check that.
Thanks Robin! I bet those almonds were very tasty! Looks like I need to get a dehydrator now! Should I do this whole process before making almond butter in vitamix as well?
I appreciate ur videos. Thanls. Doesn’t 115 degrees destroy all nutrients inside the almonds? I thought u can use up to max. 42 degrees so all nutrients stay alive?
Hi Mario, I would say you try it and see. Then let me know how they turned out. I have not tried using the oven or air fryer so I can say for sure. I add salt for flavor but you can leave it out.
Hey ! Thanks for the great video. Two questions : Once dehydrated, how long do they keep in the fridge ? Could I store them out of the fridge since they are dehydrated, I guess there is no more risk of molding ? :)
+Redcoat Ryan Hi Ryan, glad to see you are still watching my videos. Hope college is going well for you and that you are making lots of new friends. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
If I soak only small amounts for immediate consumption on the next day do I need to dehydrate them ? Is dehydration improve something or it's just a way of prolonging the time before nuts are spoiled ?
+KindaKrafty Yes, it can! I soak raw walnuts, (buy your nuts from the baking section in the store, they will be raw. You don't want roasted nuts!), raw pecans, raw shelled pumpkin seeds, and raw shelled sunflower seeds. (The raw seeds can be bought in bulk from health food type stores. Be very careful buying the seeds packaged, they usually have been roasted.) You can use the salt, or not, depends on your taste. The sunflower seeds will be soaked the least amount of time, just overnight, or about 8 hours. A little longer for the pumpkin seeds. This soaking technique Rockin Robin shows for nuts works so well on removing the bitterness from the walnuts. YUM! Oh, and don't be shocked if you see a green line around the bowl after you soaked your nuts, and a muddy colored substance sticking to the sides of the bowl (especially walnuts). It is not mold. Wash nuts and dehydrate. :) Google "soaking nuts" and you should find more info.
I did this and then roasted and attempted to make almond butter. A complete failure. Have you ever made butter from germinated almonds? I'm trying to figure out what went wrong.
+Rose Johnson Roasted nuts have added oil. And, I don't know if you have opened a can or jar of them recently, but that oil they use goes rancid, and you can smell the rancid oil on the nuts. Some say that it is very unhealthy to eat anything made with oil because oils start to oxidize soon after they are made, (going rancid). I have yet to find a can of nuts that don't have added oils, or other chemicals added to them.
You can use your oven. The only problem is that ovens seem to only go as low as 170 degrees F. where as the dehydrator works at like 115 degrees F. The higher heat kills the enzymes.
GREAT video Robin, I will have to dehydrate my nuts (is there a better way to say that??) I like the fact that you can flavor them any way you want. I think a sweet/savory mix it in the future. Point of clarification: Did you say 115' or 150"?? Thanks again and Happy Holidays to you and the family!!
+Rockin Robin's Cooking Mexican Recipes I agree with Sebastopolmark, I never thought of seasoning my seeds and nuts prior to dehydrating. Fantastic idea. And to gift them! Brilliant! :) Thank-you for sharing that. :)
Another interesting kitchen appliance -- however, not in frequent use and a huge storage problem. The lesson is worthwhile, but definitely not for us old fogies!
+GizmoBee1702 Yes you do need to be into dehydrating to make it worthwhile. There are smaller models that take up less room also. It's certainly not for everyone. I appreciate your point of view!
+GizmoBee1702 You do not have to use a dehydrator, if you do not have one of these machines ( i do not although i wish i had one) you can use your oven at its very lowest setting. I am a big beef jerky maker, and i use my oven on low and prop the door open 1 inch to allow the moisture to escape, works crazy good. SO i believe the key is lowest oven setting and put a wood spoon in the door to prop open 1/2-1 inch and you are golden. Also by propping the door open with a wooden spoon the temperature is cooler, so if your oven only goes down to say 150, a slightly open door crack will be a cooler oven temp more like the 115.
+GizmoBee1702 I keep my dehydrator permanently stationed in the laundry room. We installed a counter top with cabinets below in the laundry room just for the dehydrator, and for a place to keep the grain mill. You want someplace you can shut a door because it can get rather loud at night if you do a lot of dehydrating.
great recipe..now I can my favorite recipe of chocolate covered almonds without the bitching that were yo salty when tasted.. thanks..happy holidays to you and yours..
Robin: you are using raw almonds from Trader Joe's which in fact are NOT raw almonds. They have already been steam pasteurized, and are not raw (meaning unpasteurized). Their term for raw, means "raw not roasted". Truly raw nuts are Unpasteurized, not steam processed.
Learn something new every day! Isn’t it difficult to even find “raw” almonds in the store? I’ve been buying them from a farmers market. In fact I’ve cut down on eating almonds as they are high in omega 6’s.
Don't you destroy the nutrients on 110 degrees, and destroy the whole idea of soaking them? You can just buy them roasted, but maybe it's about the process and pleasure of making them by yourself. Thank you for the videooo
I appreciate the feedback and have made some changes going forward. You can always get the written instructions below the video in the description. Click where it says "show more" and scroll down.
It's not dehydrate it's rehydrate! If you're suffering from dehydration you need more fluid in you! You can't de-hydrate something that is already de-hydrated! Re-hydrate=more fluid, de-hydrate=less fluid. Why should anyone listen to you when you don't even know what the words coming out of your mouth mean?
As explained in the video, we soak the nuts to release the phytic acid and enzymes to make them more digestible and then place them in a dehydrator as shown in the video. Since the almonds have taken on some of the water they were soaking in, I placed them into the dehydrator to remove the water so they will become crunchy again. You don't necessarily have to dehydrate them if you don't want to but then the almonds won't be crunchy. I hope that clears things up.
I owe you a huge apology! Didn't see the full vid (a little long for me) after you re-hydrated the nuts you went on to de-hydrate them. Very sorry for ranting! Please accept my apologies. JC9
Great info Robin. I did not know why we should soak & dehydrate nuts, but now I do. Much appreciated!!!
+T-ROY COOKS Hey Troy! Thanks for stopping by! It's always good to hear from you!
I've been doing this for years but I didn't know you could use salt....I always used something acidic like vinegar or lemon juice. Soaking makes digesting nuts so much easier on the tummy. Great video!!!
+momthree789 The acid is used for soaking grains. The salt for soaking nuts and seeds.
Evelina Mewa Thanks for the info. :)
My nutritionist that I am working with told me that I must always dehydrate all nuts. Thank you for making this video, it was very helpful. I'm glad I found this.
+Monica Merfalen Hi Monica, I'm glad my video was helpful for you. I hope you will explore more of my recipes. Thanks for stopping in.
I have never tried dehydrating nuts before, although I do have a Dehydrator and should try this out. What a great idea Robin, those look delicious
+FitAnge S Hi Ange, if you are up for it, do try it. I love how the almonds turn out. It's great that you can play around with the spices you like.
Hi there! Thank you for the info, can we just soak them overnight and then peel them off and eat them ?
Getting my first dehydrator soon. This looks good.
Very useful. Thanks from the UK.
+Paul Langdon Thanks Paul! Glad you liked the video.
such a well made video, everything explained in detail
Great! Do you also have videos for drying cashews and walnuts? Thanks.
I've never dehydrated nuts before. I didn't know you could! Thanks for the great info!
+Sharon La Tour You are welcome Sharon! I hope you will give it a try!
I will , I have some in the freezer. I have to see if they are raw.:)
This is such a cool video! One day I will definitely try this
This is awesome! I'm going to try this TODAY!
Hi Robin. Very informative. For how long these dehydrated almonds can be stored:
1. Outside refrigerator
2. In refrigerator
1.Does the soaking process sprout the nuts?
2.How long do they store for before they go bad after they have been dehydrated?
Never dehydrated nuts before but I've been researching and they seem like a very healthy alternative to just buying nuts that are already in a bag, definitely going to give this a try do you have any recommendations on how to do the same thing with walnuts pecans or cashews

The skins have tannins that makes digestion harder. I don't soak mine nearly that long, just long enough to skin them, maybe about a half hour.
From nutrition standpoint, would it be the same if I eat them after soaking (without dehydrating) ?
Yes, but only if you will be eating right away. It won’t have a crunch, though. If you are making nut milk, it’s fine.
Robin, I'm going to refrain from making any comments that can be misconstrued in regards to soaking my nuts. You are welcome Guy! Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks Robin! I bet those almonds were very tasty! Looks like I need to get a dehydrator now! Should I do this whole process before making almond butter in vitamix as well?
+Chevy Brown I would do it if I were making almond butter in my vitamix! Give it a try and let us know how it turned out.
As they say in Back To The Future; "You sure dehydrate a good almond!"
I appreciate ur videos. Thanls. Doesn’t 115 degrees destroy all nutrients inside the almonds? I thought u can use up to max. 42 degrees so all nutrients stay alive?
Robing great explanation!! Question. If I don’t have a dehydrator can I put it in the oven or air fryer? Why add salt? Thanks 😊

Mmm. Almond butter in the Vitamix from these sounds really wonderful. I wonder what spicy almond butter or cinnamon sugar almond butter is like?
Hi Linda, I think those additions sound delicious. Let me know if you try them!
thanks mom
Can I just soak them and throw them in a blender for a smoothie without dehydrating them
Ok so. I feel like almond flour isn’t fine enough. If I soak and dehydrate almonds and blend them, what will be the result?
Happy holidays Robin!
+Pat Chacon Hey back at you Pat!
Hey ! Thanks for the great video. Two questions : Once dehydrated, how long do they keep in the fridge ? Could I store them out of the fridge since they are dehydrated, I guess there is no more risk of molding ? :)
Hi, Can we dehydrate naturally. Like leaving them to dry for few hours. I don't have dehydrator.
Of course, just put them out in the afternoon sun or in an oven on the lowest possible degree for 12 hours or so. That's what I saw in other videos
That new I have not seen before anyway hope you well and happy Christmas and a happy new year
+Redcoat Ryan Hi Ryan, glad to see you are still watching my videos. Hope college is going well for you and that you are making lots of new friends. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
Is the skin of the almond has nutrients too.
If I soak only small amounts for immediate consumption on the next day do I need to dehydrate them ? Is dehydration improve something or it's just a way of prolonging the time before nuts are spoiled ?
Is it still health to soak nuts for 24 hours and eat the almonds right away? I can't eat them crunchy because of my teeth, thanks.
thanks for the video!
+DeniseLynn You are welcome Denise!
Can we dehydrate it by exposing it to sunlight
can I use pink salt to soak in
I don't see why not.
What a great tip..!! Can this be done with all nuts..? Will definitely be giving this a try.. Happy Holidays..!!
+KindaKrafty Yes, it can! I soak raw walnuts, (buy your nuts from the baking section in the store, they will be raw. @@EvelinaMewa for how long the dehydrated nuts can be stored?
Hi Robin, thanks for the tips. Once dehydrated, what's the maximum time until they go rancid? Or is it essential to eat them straight away? Thanks :)
After I dehydrate the nuts, I store them in a jar with a tight fitting lid in the refrigerator and they stay great for several months.
Rockin Robin Cooks Can I leave them out in a jar after theyve been dehydrated?
Can I save on the shelf with a moisture packet
You could try it.
Thank you!!!
You are welcome!
I did this and then roasted and attempted to make almond butter. A complete failure. Have you ever made butter from germinated almonds? I'm trying to figure out what went wrong.
thanks for the video :)
Our pleasure!
so, low heat of a dehydrator does not kill the desired nutriments, but buying roasted nuts brought up to a higher heat nuts does kill the nutriments ?

Can I dehydrate the almonds in the oven? I don't have that money to buy a food dehydrator, they aren't cheap

Hello Robin & happy holydays.. can you recomend on another way to dehydrate nuts if I do not have a dehydrator?
sun.
Do you have a diy video of how to make almond milk?
+Keya2blessed2bstressed Yes I do. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/8ashNDGwBU4/v-deo.html
Is dehydrating necessary if you eat them straight after draining the water
I think they have a better texture when you dehydrate them. Instead of being soft.
what if you don't have one of those machines
great recipe..now I can my favorite recipe of chocolate covered almonds without the bitching that were yo salty when tasted.. thanks..happy holidays to you and yours..

It's so stupid to put salt and sugar to healthy product and make it unhealthy. And leaving skin after soaking also not very good idea.
Roasted Almond makes me fart. Why is that so?
