Mon dieu, quelle œuvre. Quel génie. Quelle grandeur, quelle audace.
Bravi!!!
I appreciate Hecter Berlioz Te deum is the great of all regueim. It is majestic and emotional performance. C. Abbado is also remains maestro in this immortal masterpiece..
There’s is so much happening in the first movement. It’s Beautifully chaotic the way it dances. Plus the faces the boys choir makes me chuckle. o0o 😯😮😱
A MONUMENTAL PERFORMANCE OF ONE OF BERLIOZ GREATEST ( But Much To Rarely Performed ) MASTERPIECES !!!...( I Sure Hope They Perform This In Notre Dame Cathedral On The Day of IT'S GRAND RE-OPENING !!! ) IT WOULD BE SOOO PERFECT FOR THE OCCASION !!!!!...
So beautiful; certainly complements his secular pieces like "Symphonie Fantastique." I've noticed that about many composers in the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods: need to listen to both types of their works (i.e., secular and sacred) to see their work holistically. Thanks very much for posting!
Why does Berlioz's Te Deum receive so little attention compared with the Requiem? Especially as it has some of his finest and mature music. The Judex crederis is as colossal as any thing to be found in all music.
denis turner I agree completely. I've always loved this work, from the opening severe fugue, to the subtle complexities in Berlioz's unique orchestration (in spite of having the colossal power of the orchestra, choir and organ). And the tenor solo... that solo, in all if its extraordinary beauty. Sung with great sensitivity by Jose Carreras. Finally the last movement, a fugue of staggering proportions, invoking the tolling of giant cathedral tower bells. Yes, an underperformed masterpiece if ever there was one. -MAS
@denis turner. Maybe it's because the Requiem is an even greater work - and that's in Berlioz' own words! However I agree that the Te Deum should be performed more often. BTW this was a favorite of Claudio Abbado and if you want to hear it in far better sound Y.T. has the broadcast he did from St. Alban's Cathedral in the early 1980's - stunning!
My guess as to why it receives too few performances is likely due to it's insufficient length to make up a complete concert. What other massive choral work is there in the repertoire to occupy the time either before or after an intermission? The Grande Messe des Morts is certainly long enough to make up an entire program. And as someone else suggested, maybe the lack of a massive pipe organ in a given venue contributes to the inability to add a truly massive sound. I too, was involved in a performance of the Te Deum many years ago in the Washington National Cathedral. And as I recall, the organ there did add a truly massive sound to the opening measures of the work.
(The classics completely replaced the service to God, the temples were emptied after the reconquista )
I sang in this concert, too... in the boys choir, being eight years old...what a great experience ... I'm an opera singer now...
I am a pianist...but this work really is one of my "Go to" /"dessert island" pieces of music!
What a really wonderful thing to have done

so singable too...always carries a glorious melody line; I've sung in the alto's.

My guess is the prominence of, and need for a truly massive pipe organ.
cameronpaul I agree, the performance in St. Alban's Cathedral is exceptionally fine. Abbado's best version.
My guess as to why it receives too few performances is likely due to it's insufficient length to make up a complete concert. Simply perfect except for those two dumb ads that served as distractions.

I know exactly whom you are referring to., he put his heart into the music, good for him.
